Dead mobile = shopping with mom!

I was on the hunt for a new mobile. For some unknown reason, the mobile we had downstairs on the pack-and-play (that Grandpa Mike and Grandma Linda bought) just died. I was in the middle of using it yesterday (during the mom’s group meeting) and the windup knob suddenly lost all tension so there was no music or rotation. Hoo boy.

So Tom and I went to find a new mobile after work. Since it was kinda late we just went to the local Babies ‘R’ Us. Well, they didn’t have much at all. We ended up with an electronic (i.e. needs batteries) mobile, with the thought that although it was more expensive AND would eat batteries…at least we wouldn’t have to get up and wind it every five minutes. Plus the new one had a remote! WOOHOO! That said, it turned out to be WAY too busy of a mobile and I think it actually kept him awake! (FYI: it was the Tiny Love Sweet Island Dreams Mobile.)

So today I decided to hit the other bigger/nicer baby stores in Utica to look for a mobile that actually played the same song (Brahms’ Lullaby, pretty common with windup mobiles) and found one on clearance for $20. My plan was to just use the windup part (which plays the music) and attach it to the old mobile—so I didn’t want to spend $40 for a new one. So imagine my surprise as I kept shopping and found…the exact mobile! On clearance! :>> Apparently the company has disappeared—which would explain why I hadn’t been able to find any information about it online last night! For reference, it’s a Doodlebugs Musical Mobile by Dolly:

The product lists the website as www.dolly.com but it’s definitely NOT a baby website anymore. (It’s not an unsafe site, in case you were wondering. It’s about hand trucks and carts.)

So this was Owen while we were wandering about Babies ‘R’ Us…

And now I’m trying to get him to nap—with the new mobile—and he doesn’t seem to want to nap. Even though I know he’s tired since he has only napped for about an hour total so far today. Stinker.

Owen needs a helmet!

As we were predicting, the physical therapist recommended a helmet for Owen. She checked out his abilities and for the most part he’s right on track—reaching, propping himself up on his arms, head and neck strength—but he’s a little behind in some areas because he hasn’t spent much time on his tummy (which we all know he HATES, although he’s getting a little better).

So we have a list of exercises to do with him and we have another PT appointment next week…and he goes in to get measured for a helmet hopefully next week. The process isn’t nearly as bad as we thought it would be, either—all we had found online was a casting process but we actually met with the orthotic specialist today and they have one of two head scanners in the entire state—the STARscanner uses eight cameras and four eye-safe lasers to capture head shapes in less than two seconds:

So, he will have to wear the helmet for 4-6 months (depending on his progress) for 23 hours a day, plus have an appointment every other week to measure his head again to reconfigure the helmet.

I know he won’t remember it at all—and I know it’s what’s best for him—but it still kills me that we have to do this. But, I guess in the grand scheme of things, he could have MUCH worse problems, so we should be grateful.

Different hours, please.

The hours Owen keeps are driving me insane.

Sure, he sleeps anywhere from 6-8 hours at a time on most nights—but the problem is that they start early and end early and still require me to get up to feed him once around 2am-4am.

Last night he napped much later than usual (from about 6-8:30) so he didn’t get his last bottle until about 9 and then didn’t go to bed (fall asleep) until about 9:30. So, we thought, maybe—JUST MAYBE—he will sleep later…or skip his early-morning feeding.

Ha.

HAHA.

Yeah, he was up at 4. He was back down by 4:20, but was up squawking and talking and cooing COMPLETELY WIDE AWAKE.

Of course, this is the time of day when I hate Tom the most, LOL (and I told him that, so it’s not a secret). His alarm goes of about 4:30, and he usually takes care of the boy in the morning so I can get a little more sleep. But does he get up when his alarm goes off? Noooooooo. Because at that moment, the boy is quiet, so Tom falls back asleep. But 15 seconds later Owen is noisy again, so of course I hear him and it keeps me up…and Tom is snoring away. 😐

After listening to Owen for about 30 minutes, hoping he will fall asleep again (so I can, too!) and realizing he’s NOT going to (so I can’t), I finally roll out of bed again and suddenly Tom pops up and says “Don’t worry, I’ll get him.”

Sorry, babe—too late. Where were you 30-45 minutes ago? |-|

So, going to better later does NOTHING to help the schedule. It’s almost better when he goes to bed WAY earlier—he seems to sleep a little longer (even though I am up at 2:30 or so to feed him) but then he falls back asleep for another hour or two—which means I get more sleep as well.

I can’t wait for this sleep thing to get better. Sure, I’m not up every hour or two all night anymore, but it still wears on me. And since I am not quite as exhausted in the middle of the night, it means I can’t fall back to sleep as quickly as I once could…which means I am usually up for at least an hour or more when I DO get up with him.

Sigh.

Buying diapers: The Thought Process

So it took 8 days to go through the first pack of 48 diapers. So another 8 days (the second pack of 48 diapers) would be on/around July 3. I don’t think he’ll be more than 22# by then (the stated limit for size 2-3 diapers), so it looks like I need more in that size.

But do I need 152 more? (I ordered the current packs from diapers.com, but had a $10 off coupon so they were a better deal at the time. The current best deal right now is at Amazon, but it’s a pack of 152 (I can’t find this size locally).

So, 152/48 is about 3 packs, and 3 packs X 8 days per pack is 24 days + the 8 days I have left with the new pack = 32 days (or about a month).

So the questions are: Will he still fit in them then? Will I use all them before he outgrows them? (Lord I hope so on both accounts!)

I certainly don’t have to order them at the moment (since I have about 8 days worth left), so we’ll wait and see what dad thinks.

As an aside, I posted a shorter version to Facebook, and got this response:

Mary Wakeley at 1:34pm June 26
Inevitably if you order a month’s worth he wil outgrow them in two weeks. Or worse, he won’t technically outgrow them in pounds, he will just start having diaper blow-outs every other day and then you will know a bigger size is needed. This is how the little ones operate- I have learned the hard way. 🙂

I find it ironic that someone I used to BABYSIT FOR is giving me advice on diapers and kids! (And I posted that to her, as well!) But, I know she speaks the truth!

Appointment Update

So what do we get in the mail today? A form letter from the physical therapy place saying that:

Unfortunately as insurance companies continue to reduce costs and benefits, we are finding that Pediatric Rehabilitation services are often declined.

Excuse me? We immediately thought it was a form letter telling us nothing was covered—and we were freaking out. But then it continued:

We cannot guarantee therapy coverage by your insurance company. As a result, we strongly encourage you to call your insurance company and check to see if your plan covers the therapy your child needs for his or her diagnosis.

I thought that’s why it was taking a few days…because THEY were checking into that for us? 🙄 They could have just handed me the damn letter when I turned in the prescription and saved me a week of waiting.

So a quick call to Tricare confirmed that it is ALL covered (well, PT evaluation, Therapeutic Activities, and Therapeutic Procedures are covered). So at least that is good.

We have to call tomorrow morning for an appointment.

A/C issues update

Well, the landlord called and said he talked to the guy and from what I had told him, it sounded like the system was working just fine. That it is typical for the upstairs to NOT cool like the rest of the house, especially when the weather is so hot. (Yeah, so what the hell is the point of A/C when it only works well when it’s COOL outside?) He even told me that THEIR OWN HOUSE, with TWO A/C units (one for each floor) doesn’t cool the second floor as well (that unit runs 24/7 while the other unit doesn’t).

He suggested closing off vents (which we have already done, which doesn’t help much at all—since most of the vents are so old and crappy that even in the closed position cold air still blows through) and setting up fans. Again: 🙄

Then the A/C guy called me and basically told me the same thing, but added that it’s probably a ductwork issue: old house, crappy ductwork, not really designed for A/C. Go figure.

So basically we have to deal with it.

I shouldn’t be surprised, as this is just about what we had to deal with in North Carolina—the upstairs was always warmer than anywhere else, and the living room specifically was under-vented so that room was always warm, even with the upstairs A/C unit running 24/7.

Ugh. Summer.

I can’t wait for fall.

Scheduling Rant

So, Owen has a flat head. Positional Plagiocephaly they call it.

plagiocephaly

Anyway.

So the pediatrician wanted us to see a physical therapist. Fine. She said it’s easier to treat the younger you start. Fine. So she wrote us a prescription and gave us a phone number. Fine.

Well, it might have been nice for the pediatrician to warn me that it might take up to a month to even SCHEDULE an appointment. Ugh.

Silly me, I thought it would be like any other appointment—I call, read them the prescription, and they make an appointment within a few days (like has happened a few times so far). So I waited about two weeks (my fault, but life happens, I lost the number, forgot about it completely—and besides, I didn’t think it was THAT big of a deal) and then finally called and oh, you have to bring us the prescription (not just give it over the phone like I’d done before). Fine. Then they said it would take 1-2 days for the paperwork and then someone would call to schedule an appointment. Fine.

Well, a week later with no phone call and I called back and she said oh, so and so hasn’t looked at it yet and it’s still going through the insurance process (or whatever) so it might take another 1-2 weeks until I call you back…to schedule the appointment. Schedule. Which means the appointment could still be WAY off.

>:XX

I guess I’ve just been spoiled with close-to-immediate scheduling before this. My bad. Lesson learned.

Ugh. A/C issues. Again.

Really? Another house where the A/C doesn’t work for shit upstairs? C’mon. Give us a break.

It’s a comfy 75 downstairs and a balmy 82-84 upstairs. WTF? >:XX

And here we had hoped to not even turn the damn A/C on, being a Michigan summer and all, having been used to North Carolina summers. But shit, it’s like 81 and humid, which is still uncomfortable. And we can’t have the baby’s room that warm…so we have fans going non-stop and we just turned the A/C down another few degrees to see if it helps.

And I am going to email the landlord, but I anticipate him saying “Your house, your problem” since technically that’s what our lease says. Ugh.

I freaking hate summer, no matter the state.

Owen & Elliot

Elliot is one of the babies from my mom’s group. Us moms meet every other Monday (officially), and on the “middle” Mondays we try to meet at someone’s house as well—just to get out of the house and get to know each other better. Today was a middle Monday that, unbeknownst to me, got cancelled…but the mom (Angie!) didn’t mind when I showed up on her doorstep, and we hung out for a bit…as did the boys! Aren’t they just adorable? I think Elliot is a few weeks (maybe a month) older than Owen.

What I woke up to…

So it was a pretty good night…Owen went to bed about 8 (I think it was) and slept until 4:30!! (If only I had gone to bed at 8!) So I put him back down after his bottle and he fell asleep again…and I tossed and turned (and listened to Tom’s alarm off and on for an hour) but then I think I finally fell asleep for a bit…but guess what I woke up to about 6:30??

Tom came in the room and said “Have you seen your boy? Turn on the monitor!” So I did, and…he was on his stomach!! Up on his arms and everything! YAY! Of course we don’t know how long he was like that—he really dislikes being on his stomach, and usually only lasts 2-3 minutes before getting REALLY cranky (grandpa made him stay longer one day and Owen actually made himself sick and spit up all over).

We got him up and he was his normal sweet and happy and smiley morning self. He jumped in his jumparoo for a bit, then I fed him, then we watched some TV, then I gave him more belly time—and he actually seemed to enjoy it! Long enough for me to get some cute pics, even! Here is the best one:

Happy Father’s Day!

We started the day by trying out the Bumbo seat—and he barely fits in it! (Well, he fits fine—I’m sure it’s supposed to be a little form-fitting. But his little chunky legs are somewhat wedged in there.)

Anyway, we should have been using it WAAAAY before now, but we were waiting because we thought he was supposed to be able to hold his head up on his own (when sitting upright) before using it—but he did just fine.

We also tried more oatmeal (cereal) while he was in the chair…and he actually ate it! We probably got about a teaspoon total before he got cranky! He didn’t really like it going in (we got the screwed up WHAT DID YOU JUST PUT IN MY MOUTH? face, but it stayed in and he let us do tiny spoonful after tiny spoonful!). YAY! :>>

And then it was time for a cute new outfit. And guess what size it is? JUST GUESS. No, it’s a 9-month size! NINE MONTHS! And it’s just about too small!! He’s not even five months old yet!!

Then we had some mommy time:

And finally some daddy time!!

My five seconds of fame, circa 1996.

It seems every now and again I have the need (or want) to show someone this, and I always have to dig it out of the archives (i.e. try to find it in the file cabinet)…so I figured I would scan it and post it. Yeah, I should have done it 13 years ago when it first happened, LOL.

I wrote a letter to Entertainment Weekly and it was published! The very first letter on the page, even! This is from August 23/30, 1996:

Favorite Mother’s Day Moment

Great email story—who knows if it’s true or not, but it’s certainly hilarious!

So, we had this great 10 year old cat named Jack who just recently died. Jack was a great cat and the kids would carry him around and sit on him and nothing ever bothered him. He used to hang out and nap all day long on this mat in our bathroom.

Well we have 3 kids and at the time of this story they were 4 years old, 3 years old and 1 year old. The middle one is Eli. Eli really loves chapstick. LOVES it. He kept asking to use my chapstick and then losing it. So finally one day I showed him where in the bathroom I keep my chapstick and how he could use it whenever he wanted to but he needed to put it right back in the drawer when he was done.

Last year on Mother’s Day, we were having the typical rush around and try to get ready for Church with everyone crying and carrying on. My two boys are fighting over the toy in the cereal box. I am trying to nurse my little one at the same time I am putting on my make-up. Everything is a mess and everyone has long forgotten that this is a wonderful day to honor me and the amazing job that is motherhood.

We finally have the older one and the baby loaded in the car and I am looking for Eli. I have searched everywhere and I finally round the corner to go into the bathroom. And there was Eli. He was applying my chapstick very carefully to Jack’s . . . rear end. Eli looked right into my eyes and said “chapped.”

Now if you have a cat, you know that he is right—their little butts do look pretty chapped. And, frankly, Jack didn’t seem to mind. And the only question to really ask at that point was whether it was the FIRST time Eli had done that to the cat’s behind or the hundredth.

And THAT is my favorite Mother’s Day moment ever because it reminds us that no matter how hard we try to civilize these glorious little creatures, there will always be that day when you realize they’ve been using your chapstick on the cat’s butt.

Not yet…

He hasn’t slept through the night again…yet. |-| But he does seem to be sleeping well enough…the first night after his 10-hour stretch I only got up once. And then last night he went to bed at about 7:30 without a last bottle—and slept until 3:30. ❗ And after his middle-of-the-night bottle, he seems to be sleeping better (i.e. longer).

We’re keeping our fingers crossed. 🙂

Bite Guard

I picked up my night (bite) guard today. Blech. I hope it works wonders, because it’s going to be a pain in the you know what.

You can’t just insert it like I thought—you need to run it under HOT tap water to soften it a bit. Which doesn’t sound too bad, except it takes FOREVER and a freaking day to get hot tap water in our bathroom.

And then I have to brush it each morning when I take it out. And after a few weeks, I have to start soaking it daily (similar to dentures).

And it’s bigger (thicker) than I thought.

And I can’t really talk with it in.

And it makes me drool.

So let’s everyone keep our fingers crossed that this REALLY helps with my TMD issues…because, let’s face it, I like being able to chew my food. 🙂

OH! And I almost forgot! A big HURRAY for our dental insurance after all!! Turns out they cover 50% of the bite guard cost! So we only have to pay $250 out-of-pocket! YAY!

Once more, please!

So last night was a dream. For real.

Owen had his last bottle and was sleeping by 8pm. And want to take a guess as to when he woke up?

Anyone?

A guess?

5:45!! 88|

As in…almost 10 straight hours!!

I know, I know—I couldn’t believe it myself! That said, I was up twice (about 11:30pm to roll over and then at 3:30am to pee—and to check the monitor to make sure aliens hadn’t abducted my boy from his crib!) but was able to “sleep in” until almost 6! Heaven!

Except.

In the middle of the night I came down with a sore throat… Yuck. The last thing I need is to get sick—but I think it’s coming.

So, I’m hoping we can recreate today whatever happened yesterday to have him sleep another 10 hours (but of course he probably won’t, because now I am sick and NEED the sleep)…

Flip UltraHD Camcorder

I also own the Flip Mino so my review is based on a comparison between the Flip Mino and the new Flip UltraHD.

  • The original Mino is more compact, and feels a little “plastic-y.”
  • The Mino HD has some heft to it, but it also makes it feel a bit sturdier.
  • The original Mino has an all-plastic outer shell.
  • The Mino HD has a smooth silicone/rubberish gripper material (which I loooove).
  • The original Mino? 9 seconds of video = 4.53MB
  • The Mino HD? 9 seconds of video = 10.1MB
  • The original Mino is rechargable via USB only.
  • The Mino HD is rechargable via USB and replaceable AA batteries (says the description, although to be honest, I haven’t read the instructions, and I can’t easily see where/how the battery compartment works).
  • The original Mino has a TV out jack.
  • The Mino HD has an HDMI out jack.
  • The original Mino has touch-sensitive buttons (which I find somewhat confusing.)
  • The Mino HD has actual buttons (which I find easier).

Both versions work well in low light (and do an amazing job compared to my Canon SD600 digital camera).

The HD version powers up a smidge quicker (maybe 2 seconds), but that can be a lot if you’re trying to catch a kid or a pet in action.

The only reason it gets 4 stars is because I am not fond of the USB connection–as I said, the unit has a bit of heft to it, so when I plug it into my laptop, I feel like I need to brace the camcorder so it doesn’t weigh on the USB. I am sure it’s strong enough, but I worry about it.

Overall, I can highly recommend this camcorder…it is just up to you to decide which features are most important (item size, file size, battery charging, etc.)

We received this item for free as part of the Amazon Vine™ Program.

Zo-Li On-The-Go Travel Formula & Snack Dispenser

I had been debating between the Zo-Li On-The-Go Travel Formula & Snack Dispenser and the Innobaby Packin’ SMART Formula Dispenser and Snack Case, and ended up getting the Zo-Li because it was the first one to be available (at the time) with Amazon Prime.

To be honest, I loved the idea and was so jazzed with the item that I paid NO attention to the size of the container. I just assumed (wrongly, it turns out) that it was a tall and skinny container. I know the containers I currently use for formula (the smaller of the Powdered Formula Dispenser Combo Pack) and was expecting it to be about that size (well, except taller!). So you can imagine my surprise when I opened the box and saw just how big the Zo-Li was!! It’s HUGE—3″ wide and 8″ tall!! See for yourself!

I don’t remember seeing the dimensions listed in the product information section…but honestly, even if they were, I didn’t pay attention because I was just so enamored with this container! As far as it taking up less room than say, the more common Philips Avent Formula Dispenser/Snack Cup…well, overall it doesn’t because it’s a bigger container, LOL, but it’s a more consistent shape which makes it seem like it takes up less space. But it’s not NEARLY the space savings I had anticipated. It’s smaller in diameter but about 2.5 times the height!

That said, even with the size, this thing is great. It says it can hold formula for an 8oz bottle, but you could probably squeak 10oz in there if you had to. The actual formula dispenser piece just fits on the top-most container (so, if you had formula in other layers, you would just need to rotate layers so the formula was on the top). It would also make a great toy (once empty) since the layers can be mixed and matched in any order.

As far as construction…the pieces unscrew VERY easily (it’s only about 1/8 of a turn, which worried me—but I tried to pull them apart and they stayed tightly together) and they screw together fairly easily (to be honest, about half the time, I have to unscrew a layer to try and re-thread it correctly). The plastic is very heavy-duty in both appearance and feel. The formula dispenser portion works nicely, but as with any other dispenser, you do have to tap it a few times to get everything out (but since it is angled, everything easily does come out).

I do wish it came in a choice of colors (or all clear)–which is one thing I liked about the Innobaby.

Overall, I would highly recommend this item!

Secretary of State, Part 2

So I went to get Tom’s plate taken care of and change our addresses. I was there five minutes before they opened and was third in line. By the time they opened, there were about 15 people waiting!

I got waited on right away (they had about five people behind the counter) and boy, was it eye-opening.

Basically, Tom wanted to go back to using his MSU-themed license plate. He had it on his previous car, but then switched to a North Carolina plate because it was cheaper than registering the new car in Michigan. Fine. I didn’t think there would be any issue at all.

I was wrong.

The lady was VERY nice, and told me that “Yeah, you don’t want to use this plate.” Um, okay, why not? Basically, to use the same plate, we would have had to pay for the entire time it was UNUSED in order to “bring it up to date.” Michigan is one of those states where you apparently can’t let the plate lapse for any reason. Ugh. It was a matter of like $260 vs. $140 or something crazy like that. Yeah, um, give us a regular plate. 🙄 She said if we really wanted the MSU plate, we could try again in a few months, or just get a new one entirely. At least she was very nice about it, but what a strange thing. Even if we could prove the plate was unused during that time…we’d still have to pay. Oh well.

Then I changed our addresses and I was out of there in under 15 minutes. YAY!

What a stinker!

So the past two nights we’ve tried putting Owen to bed about a half hour earlier, and if you’ve been reading along, you know it hasn’t been going well/helping any. So tonight we decided to just go back to what we have been doing—which is to say, putting him to bed around 8 or so (or whatever time it was when he seemed hungry and tired).

So what happened?

The little shit—while we weren’t looking and were out of the room for about two minutes—fell asleep in his jumpy chair! At about 7:15! |-|

Of course, Tom was still in the nursery installing room-darkening curtains and making noise, so I walked around with a sleepy-then-sleeping Owen in my arms. When I layed him in the crib at 7:45 he was OUT. Didn’t even move a muscle.

Fine, I thought. We’re following his schedule now so maybe the night will go well. Except, I thought, he only ate like 3oz before he fell asleep…

And we were up at 12:30. And again at 5.

Hoo boy.

Another sleep-deprived night.

This is getting old—fast. It’s amazing how quickly you get used to something…and let me tell you, I was VERY used to him sleeping 6-7 hours at a stretch. 😐

We tried the earlier-to-bed thing again last night…but again, it was only maybe 30 minutes earlier than normal. And he only slept until 12:30 (so maybe three hours for me), at which time he snarfed 6oz of formula. Then he was up at 5am, but he didn’t really want to eat (maybe 2oz) so I just put him back in the crib and put the mobile on…then listened to his jibber jabber for an hour or so. One or both of us must have fallen asleep for a bit, because I woke up at about 6:45 to him jabbering again.

I am thinking now, when he’s kinda sick, was not the best time to try the earlier-to-bed routine. Because we don’t know if his schedule disruption is due to a) being sick or b) the new routine. So I think we’ll go back to normal tonight and try again after he’s healthy.
