Christmas at the Shanty

We were looking forward to great food at the Shanty Christmas party…but long story short we were idiots and didn’t realize that “passed plates” meant hors d’oeuvres and not family style so we were all bummed. The things we had were decent, but not worth the wait or the cost. At least we got to meet up with a friend of ours for a little bit.

Top Gun: Maverick

There was no way in hell I was missing this on the big screen…

My thoughts?

  • Holy crap was that good! I wasn’t sure they could pull it off but they did.
  • It was more emotional than I anticipated for sure.
  • Tom Cruise still has it.
  • I got goosebumps more than once.
  • I teared up more than once.
  • The actor that plays Goose’s son is damn near perfect casting.
  • I’m so glad my mom didn’t see it first and tell me I didn’t need to see it because it was “just a bunch of planes flying around.”
  • I definitely want to see it again.

My name is NOT mom!

Mom’s night out at Genesee Theater with some of our mom squad to see My Name is NOT mom! I was so happy to be healthy enough to make it!

This is what it took to get ready.
Final look!

We’re really up close and personal for some mom humor!

Pit seating, second row!
We weren’t supposed to take photos but Britt snuck one!

It was hilarious and definitely worth going if you get a chance!

Gurnee Moms Hot Mom Summer Kickoff

One of our local Facebook forums (Gurnee Moms) had an event at our favorite restaurant —so most of our group went!

They had a professional photographer and of course I was ahead of the group heading inside to grab a table for dinner (they had appetizers but not nearly enough for the number of people) so I missed being in the group pic.

The tree that friends built.

I wasn’t sure what color scheme I wanted to do with my tree. My friend Britt has a gorgeous red/gold/silver tree that I thought about trying to duplicate…

…but when I went to Hobby Lobby with Anna (to get some clearance Christmas decorations and (hopefully) ornaments) they had nothing with color that I liked. I did get a few generic items like silver deer heads and neutral burlap balls—as a start.

And then.

Anna said she had a whole bucket of unbreakable purple ornaments I could have. I had thought about purple but didn’t really want a PURRRPLE tree. But as soon as she showed them to me I knew they were perfect. They are in the dusty lilac plum family.

So now I need to find some bigger ornaments in those colors. And get some ribbon (right now we’re just testing it out with a few lengths Anna had on hand). And maybe add some snowflakes or icicles…

Before and after, two trees.

We have plenty of room for TWO trees this year…so you can bet your butt I’m doing it!! A friend knew we didn’t have an artificial tree anymore so found one for me and then I snagged one from Amazon Vine!

This tree definitely needs zhuzhing.

I had my doubts but love how this tree turned out! My friend Britt helped me design it using a bunch of random fake berries, branches, pinecones, etc. that I had originally intended for topiary-type decorations—along with a specific selection of color-matching ornaments from our collection.

Buuuuuuut it’s just a bit small for the room (YOU THINK?!) so we are hoping to find at least a 9′ tree, if not maybe a 12′ tree on clearance after Christmas. I finally have the space for a huge tree (my bucket list!) so I’m gonna do it.

Tree number two was planned to be the more kid-friendly tree with all of our fun ornaments and crazy lights. It’s definitely not the best fake tree but once you get it zhuzhed with lights and ornaments it’s fine.

It’s hard to get a decent daylight pic since it’s in front of the bright window.

The lights are actually insane LED lights with like 12 colors that chase and flash and race and it can be quite anxiety-inducing. The kids love it (and it is cool) but when I get to pick it’s a calm purple.
