After being gone on vacation for five days/four nights and then being gone again most of Tuesday…Owen is our shadow.
It’s soooo cute…yet so sad and pathetic.
At one point, Papa and Grannie left to go out to dinner, and Papa came upstairs when they got home. As soon as Owen saw him, he started freaking out and crying, saying “Don’t leave! You stay here!” Poor kid thought that we were going to leave again because they were back.
I hope we’re out of this phase soon because it just breaks your heart (especially because we have to be strong and not cave in).
…I got to see Top Gun on the big screen!!!
Why didn’t I see it in 1986? Because I was 12 (or 13) and my mom saw it first and said “It’s just a bunch of planes flying around and it made me sick.”
I KNOW, RIGHT?!
So I’ve watched it about 25 times on VHS…then DVD…just waiting for the day it MIGHT come back to the theater.
And that time was now…for a special limited release in IMAX 3D!
To help promote the films upcoming 3D Blu-ray release on February 19, Paramount decided to re-release the classic in a six day run that started on Friday, where the film averaged about $6,600 per screen.
And it was only an hour away in Wilmington so HELLS YEAH I was going! WOOHOO!!!
We considered it an anniversary [of when we met in February 1997] / Valentine’s Day outing so ate a sushi lunch first then walked down the street to the theater where I saw this:
And had to have some!
Yum!
Then it was off to the movie. Aren’t the 3D glasses stunning?
And the movie was AWESOME! Wow. The 3D aspects didn’t blow me away…but there were some cool aspects and the actors felt very close and sometimes it felt like you were IN the cockpit with them!
Also, interestingly, with the awesome THX surround sound, I heard A LOT more of the background noises that just melted away in TV showings even with a decent home surround sound system (like a running shower and background music that were never as pronounced).
It was my first actual 3D movie (other than Honey, I Shrunk the Kids at Disney about 20 years ago or 3D/IMAX attractions at Cedar Point) and I’d have to say 3D has come a long way. And it took a good 20 or so minutes until I finally stopped noticing that I was watching the movie through glasses and just enjoyed it without distraction. Well, except I had to pee about 30 minutes in but hell if I was going to miss one second of the movie after waiting 26 years!
We ended our day’s outing with a trip to Costco…so it was a great day! And I can cross See Top Gun on the big screen off my bucket list!
I honestly didn’t really miss the kids until we were on our way home…
And then it was pure awesome seeing Owen come running out of the house to give us both hugs! He was SO excited that we were home! And it feels like he changed a ton—his vocabulary and enunciation seems better and he even seemed lighter!
I hate leaving him, but I like the welcome home greeting we got!!
This was most of the weekend group hanging out at the house playing Cards Against Humanity (basically an R-rated Apples to Apples
).
Our first meal of vacation was dinner with friends at Saki Room Sushi Lounge in Miami.
Oh. My.
We stuffed ourselves silly on appetizers, dinner, and dessert…all family style so we could try a bunch of things. Mmmmmm.
Eddy snapped this pic (and blinded us in the process):
So tonight Tom and I went out again, leaving the kids (Owen) behind. He was just getting ready to get in his bath so I went up to tell him.
Me: Owen, daddy and I are going to the store.
Owen: [Looking down.] I’ll be crying.
Poor kid. But so cute because of the way he said it…like he was resigned to the fact he’d be crying but wasn’t actually that upset about it.
But as it turned out, Lin said he did pretty good. Phew.
Four more days to go.
Tom and I had to run to the store tonight and likely wouldn’t be back by Owen’s bedtime. He has never had any separation anxiety…so we didn’t think anything of leaving and having Grannie and Papa put him to bed.
But apparently tonight was the night.
We got home about 10 minutes past his usual bedtime and he was still up getting a story. And he was crying. Complete with fistfuls of Kleenex. 🙁
Lin said he had been like that on and off all night, saying he missed us and he’d never see us again. 🙁 And then when he saw me he cried harder. Poor kid.
So now we need to try and desensitize him a bit before we leave for four days. 🙁
Mommy brain strikes.
Apparently I have lost my ability to count. I was getting a cash deposit ready for Tom to take in (from selling our fridge and the garage sale last fall) and counted it twice at $2400 both times.
Tom just calls me from the credit union: “How much did you count?”
Seems it was $2320. Even had her double count it.
Yeah, apparently when I was making $100 stacks of 20s…I counted a single 20 as $100. Twice.
😐
After finishing a level on Xbox Lego Pirates…
Me: Good job, Owen! We did it!
Owen: Mama, I’m so proud of you!
Tom: Owen, do you have pets?
Owen: Yes! Maggie, Charlie, and Bella!
Playing in Katie’s room while I’m getting her ready for bed…
Me: [As Katie is being super wiggly] Katie! You’re out of control!
Owen: [Pretending he’s talking on the phone] Hi dad. Katie’s out of control. Okay. Bye.
As Tom is wiping Owen’s poopy butt…
Owen: Dad! Don’t get poop on your hands!
Owen just got out of bed saying “Something’s wrong! Daddy! Come here! Something’s wrong!” So Tom follows him and Owen crawls back up in bed and points at his sheets that aren’t quite pulled taut. Like this (but this is our bed):
And this isn’t the first time he’s been concerned with something like this (and not just at bedtime). It’s been a flipped up corner of carpet, a blanket askew, a closet door half opened…
It started last night at about 9:45 when we looked on the monitor and saw that Katie had her legs sticking through the crib slats…even though we have a breathable bumper on it. (It’s blurry since it was taken in total darkness so the camera couldn’t focus.)
So I held the light while Tom unstuck her legs and we thought that was that.
Until about 2am when her loud screeching/whining woke us up. I checked the monitor and it looked like she had one leg sticking out again…but then she was quiet so we just left her and went back to sleep. About 3:30 she screeched again… I check the monitor…legs sticking out…not quieting down…not quieting down…okay, settling down…try to get back to sleep. SCREECH! Now she was flailing about on her stomach in her “okay I’m ready to get up” phase. Ugh.
So Tom went and got a bottle while I shut Owen’s door (because Katie was still making a racket). While I was feeding her, I heard a door shut, so thought Tom was just starting his day a little early and taking a shower. Except, no…as I was leaving Katie’s room, I saw that Owen’s door was open again!! Which means the little booger got out of bed in the 15 minutes I was in with Katie (and I heard his door opening, not our door shutting). STINKER!
By this time it’s 4:15 and neither of us can get back to sleep, though we tried. Tom got up at 4:30 and I wrote this blog post. Hopefully I’ll be able to catch maybe two more hours before Owen gets up…
While we were at Home Depot last week, we answered some questions about our water for a chance to win a gift certificate. Yeah, I knew they were likely going to call to get us to buy some sort of water service, but whatever, no biggie.
So they call to tell us HEY—YOU WON! Cool, the girl had said a $250 GC. So he goes on…”You win a free home water test and a $10 GC!” Oh, thanks. BIG WHOOP. We don’t care about the water test and a $10 GC isn’t really worth it to go through the hassle. But I say yes, because I am actually intrigued as to what’s in our water. We schedule for 8-9 on Friday, but say it really has to be at 8 before we start the kids bedtime routine and we go to bed. The guy says he’ll make that note. Friday comes and we have to reschedule because the guy who does the tests had been in a minor car accident. We reschedule for Monday at the same time, reiterating it really needs to be near 8. Fine.
Fast forward to tonight, Skyping with the grandparents, talking on the phone to other grandparents, putting Katie to bed, putting Owen to bed late at 8:45…when Tom says “Why is there someone in front of our house?” Oh yeah, the water guy—we had totally forgotten—but it was 8:50 and we were on our way to bed. So we turned off the lights and watched from the balcony in the dark. And after five minutes of watching (so, 8:55), he walked up our lawn and I was thinking he’d just leave a card or something. But NO. He rings the doorbell, which is VERY LOUD AND VERY LONG.
Tom goes down there and the guy says “Hi! I saw you turn off your lights so I figured it wasn’t a good time…” SO SINCE YOU FIGURED IT WASN’T A GOOD TIME YOU THOUGHT RINGING THE BELL WOULD BE A BETTER IDEA? 👿 Long story short, he will have them call to reschedule…at which point I will say thanks but no thanks, mail me my gift certificate (which I’m sure they won’t do).
And this is why I usually never give my number for anything…and why I will go back to NOT doing so again.
This is what happens about once a week when Owen gets up from his nap and misses Tom. Usually he just says he’s not happy, but sometimes it’s a full-fledged breakdown. Poor kid.
So last night I didn’t mute my phone like I’ve done pretty much every night ever…figuring I really don’t need to because I have DND (Do Not Disturb) on, which silences incoming phone calls unless someone A) is in your favorites or B) calls three times.
So what happens? Some unknown asshole texts me twice at 12:45am asking “who is this?” and then—since I obviously didn’t answer—calls me twice at 1-EFFING-am. Seriously? Who does that? And at 1am? And DND let it through because apparently 2 texts + 2 phone calls = 3 phone calls…??
I’m not mad at DND (though I am surprised) but I am so pissed I was woken up by some inconsiderate douchebag. I was tempted to call them back at 6a and hopefully wake them up. So after having just finally fallen asleep around 12:30, I was wide awake again. 👿
Oh, and I have ZERO idea who it is. It’s a North Carolina cell number I’ve never called or texted. And though their number was blocked when they called…it came through on the texts, so Tom called at 7:30 and got some chick’s voicemail, saying something to the effect of “If you’re Tim or someone I don’t know, forget about me calling back.” So obviously she’s having issues with a guy named Tim. And I’m sure she thought I was involved.
So since Tom refused to keep calling back, this is the texting conversation we had:
There should be something more painful you can do to stupid people like this.
Owen LOVES guns. He turns anything and everything (from a marker to a staple remover to a fork) into a gun. So that’s what he picked as his special treat when he was out shopping with Tom this morning. Here he is with it…and I have to admit he looks a bit scarier with the gun with his new haircut. 🙂
Owen was refusing to eat breakfast.
Me: Owen, you have to eat breakfast.
Owen: No!
Me: Do you want cereal or waffles?
Owen: No.
Me: Owen…come downstairs.
We start heading downstairs.
Owen: Pancakes…with chocolate chips!
Playing Xbox Lego with Tom, and Tom did something good.
Owen: I’m so proud of you.
Owen gave Tom a hug just after he got out of the shower.
Owen: Dad!! You just got water on my back.
Tom fell asleep on the couch so Owen brought his turtle night light out for him. 🙂
