Why not?

Welcome, guests!
As you know, we no longer have an official guest room now that Katie is taking up the third bedroom. So, when we have overnight guests, they get the upstairs living room pullout sofa. It’s a queen—and we now have a topper—but otherwise, that’s all the sleeping space unless you wanted a plain ol’ couch. But, we rarely need more room than that. BUT, we kinda wanted to be prepared anyway.
So in the meantime, the peanut gallery (you know who you are!) has let us know that the downstairs couch was just a bit too—shall we say—plush (or comfortable!) and was a bit hard to get out of…
And then every now and again when we sat down or moved around, we’d hear something creaking. Or snapping. Or groaning. Or ripping. And then we started thinking about just how long we’ve had the couch and chair set…and came to realize it’s about eight years old! EIGHT! HOLY WAH! It certainly doesn’t seem like that long. The set is still good/comfy but is obviously breaking down…and we feel like we want to sell it as a set while it still has life.
SOOOOO…considering all of the above things, we decided that selling the set would allow us to actually scale back the furniture we currently have (by only replacing the couch and NOT the chair since we have the big leather chair that’s really out-of-place in the playroom). We thought it could be cheap—but should be comfortable since we use that couch on a daily basis. But not anything of great quality since we still have a lot of baby and kid messy stages to go through.
We bookmarked some on Amazon but I refused to buy something like that without testing seating comfort. Sam’s Club had a similar one but refused to take it down for us to try (they told us to just return it if we didn’t like it—REALLY?!). Costco was hit or miss…and again, I would hesitate ordering without testing it and they never have the same one in the stores as they do online (and if we found one in the store, how the hell would we get it home?).
And then we broke down and went to our favorite (dangerous) furniture store…and the same guy who we bought ALL of our past furniture from was still there—and remembered us! And 30 minutes and $1100 later we have a new leather sleeper couch. (It’s amazing how a moderately inexpensive $799 couch jumps up to $1100 after 5 year warranty, taxes, and delivery are added on.) But it’s a nicer quality couch than we planned on (plus it’s leather) that will last longer than we planned on. And we’ve used the warranty before on a different piece of furniture so for that extra $100 it was worth it. It should actually last quite a long time—it’s better quality than the stuff we’re replacing…so the high quality new couch should easily last that long or longer.
Owen liked this couch:
Waiting for us to do the paperwork:
Watching them bring in the couch:
REALLY enjoying the new couch:
The bonus is that the couch is a bit smaller—plus we moved Owen’s drawing table to the playroom—so the room feels quite a bit bigger. Owen AND Katie were having a blast in all the open space…but I wonder when Owen will realize his once-in-awhile eat-in-front-of-the-TV table and chairs are gone…
So now, we have room for more guests! Come on down!!
Charlie & Katie
Tom caught this tonight. Katie got a little too close for Charlie’s comfort…and snapped at her. She didn’t harm Katie in any way…but obviously scared her into a delayed reaction.
Almost sushi…but good enough for me.
Well, you may remember that I’ve always said I wanted a kid who, when asked where they wanted to go for dinner, would ask for sushi.
And you can probavly guess that I don’t quite have that (yet?)…but I did get a kid who picks the “fish tank resternot.”
I’ll take it. 🙂

Easter Egg Hunt
Today was Owen’s first honest easter egg hunt with a bunch of kids! One of the moms in my mommy group had organized a get-together with some of her neighbors and the mommy group moms. I am SOOO glad we decided to go… It was the first time Tom had seen Owen with more than a handful of kids—and it was amazing.
This was his slam dunk:
Tom trying to show Owen how to hit the ball:
He did, but then that was it and he was off to the next thing:
The start of the egg race, which was taking place to keep the kids out of the back yard while the older kids were hiding the eggs:
Slow but steady…
Race over, no one cared who won!
Getting ready to go hunt for eggs!
Rushing in! Half the kids came in each side of the yard. Owen was just thrilled—and it was hilarious because he could see other eggs while he was picking up the ones in front of him, but had a hard time actually getting the ones in front of him because he was so enamored with seeing all the other eggs that he wasn’t close to yet!
He even braved the bouncy house (which he DOES NOT like to play in) because there were a handful of eggs inside!
His successful haul!
The entire gaggle of kids! I think the youngest was 2 and the oldest was 6.
A family shot, taken by a friend. (Then I took their family shot—she’s like me and rarely is in the photos!)
Owen torturing the girls on the trampoline with a fake snake! They were all screaming and he was just laughing and having a great time.
Swinging the snake around. All I could think of was my mom telling me how her brother did that to her WITH REAL SNAKES when they were kids…
Then he got all sneaky and shoved the snake through the opening in the side of the net. He was so proud of himself! What a stinker!
Then, right as we were getting ready to leave, they were handing out popsicles. Owen didn’t want one, but then asked a little girl if he could have a bite of hers. The mom was standing there (and knows about Owen’s food issues) so told her daughter it was okay. So Owen took a bite! He didn’t love it, but at least he tried it!
Starting him young!
Revamped Playroom
With the help of my stepsister Kathryn who went to her local (Atlanta) IKEA to pick up the shelf for me…and then hauled it to Myrtle Beach where I then picked it up at my parent’s condo…and then Tom putting it together…we now have a revamped playroom!
When I showed it to Owen for the first time, his eyes got really wide as he said “HOLY MACKEREL!” 🙂
Then I told him everything had its own basket.
Me: Cars go here.
Owen: Yeah!
Me: Trains go here.
Owen: Yeah!
Me: Animals go here.
Owen: YEAH!
Me: Puzzles are here.
Owen: YEAH!
🙂
Rumblemania
Well THAT was unexpected.
So just now, Tom was watching TV and I was the office on the computer when we hear this…NOISE. I thought it sounded like a door slamming downstairs (impossible) and Tom thought it sounded like Owen jumping around his room…so he went to investigate.
And found Owen had fallen out of bed! 😯
He was in the middle of his floor and the stool was tipped over and he was crying and crying. Tom asked him what happened and he didn’t really answer. Tom helped him get back into bed and he apparently fell right back to sleep.
What the WHAT?! That’s NEVER happened! (Well, I guess, at least not that we’ve heard or been awake for…though I think it would wake me up.) Of course my mind rushes to sleepwalking…so we’re hoping this was a one-time thing.
Poison Control
Well, we just survived our first Poison Control Center call (800-222-1222). And we now know that STINK FREE Urine Odor Remover is non-toxic, even though it doesn’t say it anywhere on the bottle.
It was Katie. She was upstairs with Tom and Owen while I was making dinner. Our best guess is that she knocked it over and either got splashed or she then licked the bottle or carpet.
It was my fail because I left the flip-top lid open for some unknown reason, thinking that we wouldn’t be in the upstairs living room anytime soon. It was Tom’s fail because he was roughhousing with Owen and wasn’t playing close attention to what she was doing.
We first called the 800# on the bottle and they were less than helpful. The lady that answered the phone was obviously unprepared for URGENT calls of that magnitude and pretty much said “Well, um, we’ve had it happen before and nothing bad happened. But I’d still take her to the doctor.” Then said she’d transfer me to someone who knew more about the product, but that sent me to voicemail.
So then I remembered that I had the Poison Control number in my phone (and have ever since I was pregnant with Owen) but had just never had to use it before. The woman there was helpful—even though the bottle had zero ingredient information—and was able to tell us after about a minute that the stuff was non-toxic. WHICH MIGHT HAVE BEEN NICE TO PUT ON THE BOTTLE NEXT TO “KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN.”
So, it was a touch scary for about 10 minutes—I was pretty sure she hadn’t ingested much so didn’t want to freak out, but we couldn’t just ignore it completely. This weekend we’re going on a major cleaning and picking up spree (since she can now pull herself up and reach things she couldn’t before)…
Heading out for dinner!
Owen’s first mini golf
Thing 1 & Thing 2
Gramma Jean came home today with these shirts for the kids…
Of course, I have 58 attempted shots of them laughing and playing together—but with one looking away or hands in the way or legs in the way. 🙂 Here’s a video of all of them…
I did get these next two, though, which I thought would look good combined…
So I googled and discovered that Microsoft Live (already on mom’s laptop!) has a feature called Photo Fuse which will let you mix and match heads from photos…so I created this picture!
And then when we left them to their own devices…
And then Katie decided she should check out a sleeping daddy…
Daddy’s here!
Where’s daddy?
Tom had to go back home today while we extended our stay with the grandparents. Of course, all afternoon Owen has been asking where daddy is (he knows he’s at home) and repeating how many “big sleeps” it will be until he comes back (four). But tonight he just looked so dejected as he said:
Where’s daddy? He needs me.
🙁
Margaritas, anyone?
When we were in Florida last month I discovered the Kirkland brand margaritas at Costco—holy cow were they good. I wondered why we hadn’t seen them at our Costco… Oh yeah, that’s right, you can only get liquor and liquor-based drinks at ABC stores…which Costco is not. So, I checked South Carolina (since I’d be heading there to visit my mom and David in about a month) and by golly, they carried it. Hot damn! I told my friends that I’d probably buy about 10 of them…and I’m not sure they believed me.
Fast forward a month, and…
Pool fun with cousins
Family Breakfast
Where’s the swarm of locusts?
So Owen was yawning today around noon so I asked if he wanted to go take his nap early…and he could sleep in my bed (since Katie was already napping in their shared room).
And he agreed!!! And I got proof he actually slept!
Except it only lasted 45 minutes. 😐
When I told Tom about it later, he said “WTF?!?!? I am looking outside for a swarm of locusts.”
Hee.
Today’s Outfit
Inquisitive little bugger!
Attempted nap time
Tom came home from work early today and surprised us! I’ve recently moved Owen’s nap from 1:00 to 1:30 (as he only sleeps maybe 1.5 hours anymore) so he was still going to be up when Tom got home.
Tom wanted to nap (since he was up at 3:30 this morning) but Owen wanted to be with him, so Owen promised to TRY and nap next to him. I was downstairs with Katie and heard activity so knew it wasn’t going well. Then Tom yelled down that he was getting the Xbox ready for Owen.
Later, Tom told me what happened. He said it was so cute because Owen was really trying hard to be still and stay quiet but he was a ball of energy. Tom was sneakily watching him and saw Owen just grinning and grinning.
Tom: Owen, what are you thinking about?
Owen: Grannie and Papa.
Tom: What about Grannie and Papa?
Owen: They’re at home.
And then he was intrigued by the ceiling (which has an octagonal cut out). So nap time was over. 🙂
Road trip!
Tom had to go to Raleigh to see one of his marines who was in the hospital, so we decided to make a day of it and take Owen with us (leaving Katie at home with Grannie and Papa). We thought it would be a special treat for Owen…which it was, after the tantrums stopped. He knew he was going with us—we reaffirmed it time after time—but it didn’t stop him from asking 74 times and whining for unknown reasons (like when Papa simply tried to talk to him).
Anyway.
He was a trooper on the car ride (and even enjoyed sharing our chocolate shake).
He was a trooper at the hospital. He was a trooper at Costco. Then he fell asleep in the 15 minute drive to Trader Joes…
…so he was a bit cranky when we woke him up…and he demanded he take his B with him out of the car (which we rarely allow).
Then it was off to the park.
And amazingly, he actually went down the slides—and liked it! (He used to go on the slides in Troy, but for some reason he stopped liking them when we moved away.)
New food #4!
I’m still shaking my head in disbelief—and excitement!
Tom brought home teriyaki (steak and chicken, fried rice, and fried onions/zucchini) for lunch and I asked Owen twice if he wanted to try the chicken (it was super tender with a really yummy sauce) but he said no. Okay, fine, that’s honestly what I expected.
So as I’m finishing my last bite, he looks over and says “What’s that?” I told him it was the last forkful of rice.
“I try it?”
Wait, what? HE ASKED TO TRY IT?
So I scraped up a few remaining pieces of rice and he ate it…and loved it…and wanted more! I was done, but managed to scrape a few more odds and ends of rice for another mini bite—and he wanted more! I felt bad I didn’t have any more…but who would have thought he’d ASK to try rice?
Grannie said she was making rice for dinner so he could have more then. I kept my fingers crossed that he’d still be interested by then.
Football with dad and Papa
SNOW!!!
Who would have thought it would be freezing cold and snowing in North Carolina today? Of course, Owen was excited and wanted to go out and play in it!!
Making a snowball with daddy!
Mama says “Pictures, please!”
Back inside to find Katie and Grannie watching out the window…
Katie’s first snow!
