Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child
So I bought this book on a friend’s recommendation months ago and initially flipped through it. We were past most of the 8-12 week stuff (I hadn’t had the book then!) and he was still a bit too young for the 4-5 month stuff. I did, however, try to start paying attention to his sleep cues so I could put him down for naps instead of just waiting for him to fall asleep in his bouncy seat or on me.
But, since he just turned four months, it was time to revisit it.
So I just finished about half the book (skimming some parts)…and we have some changes to make. Hoo boy.
For one, we need to try an earlier bedtime. Right now, we try to do it any time after 7ish (it can be as late as 8). We have just been trying to see when he seems to get tired/hungry and go from there. But the book suggests trying 6:30 (well, 20+ minutes earlier than normal), saying that parents are afraid to try it thinking that the kid will get up earlier in the morning, but it generally isn’t the case—it actually helps them sleep longer. So we definitely need to try that. He isn’t sleeping THAT badly, but it would be nice for him to sleep longer. But it also relates to his morning nap…
He has been taking looooong morning naps. Generally anywhere from 3-4 hours! It’s not awful, but it is a sign that he might not be getting enough nighttime sleep (see the relation?!). Getting more sleep at night might lessen the length of the morning nap, which might then help with his afternoon naps (which he hasn’t seemed to want to take lately). Everything is related.
And speaking of his morning nap? We put him in the swing and he loves it. Well, that is okay to do as well…but it’s recommended that once he’s sleeping, you need to stop the swing. Even though it appears they are sleeping soundly, motionless sleep is best.
There is just so much to try and learn/remember… Now we just have to get dad to read the book so we can both be on the same page!!

Date night at The Capital Grille
Tom and I wanted to celebrate two things: the rental of our house and the birth of our baby…and we wanted to celebrate in style. We had thought about going to Ruths Chris or Morton’s, but Tivo friends recommended another steak place, The Capital Grille, instead—so that’s where we went. Dad and Linda were here so they babysat while we went to dinner. What follows is the online review I wrote for our experience.
This is what 5-star dining is all about.
We went here for our celebratory “we just had our first baby and this is our first night out alone dinner” and it could not have been better!
Our night started with valet parking (why not?). We entered and the Maître d’ took our coats and seated us. Our waitress greeted us by name and spent quite a bit of time explaining the wine list and the menu (since we had never been there before). We probably could have saved her some time by saying we weren’t interested in any wine, but she was very nice and knowledgeable and it was interesting to hear everything. She then left us alone to agonize over all the delicious menu items.
When she came back to take our order, she also brought over a tiny shaker of their signature drink, the Stolli Doli (sp?), a pineapple-infused vodka, to try and tempt us into a real drink. We just enjoyed the delicious sample.
The appetizers came out very quickly and I was impressed. (I had for some unknown reason imagined that the food would take longer.) I had ordered the calamari (on the waitresses recommendation) and hubby ordered the lobster and crab cakes. We could have made do with just one of the orders, as the calamari was enough for probably four people! One neat thing was that the waitress had stopped by and asked if we wanted her to split/serve the appetizers—putting them on separate plates if we were going to share. We said sure! So when she delivered them, we each had two plates. Very cool. The calamari was a bit spicy but not too bad, and it was very good. I highly recommend those. The lobster and crab cakes were good, but I think I enjoyed the calamari more. (It was so good, we dove in and ate most of it before remembering to take a picture.)
It was about this time that I mentioned why we were there celebrating…and the waitress got very excited! Turns out she was pregnant and loved kids and wanted to hear more about us and our baby, then said she’d have a surprise for us. She came back with two glasses of wine! Then she asked if we had a baby scrapbook and we said yes, so she asked if she could take our picture. We said sure, thinking she would email it to us or something. But she said she would print it out and give it to us! She was back within a few minutes with the picture printed and placed in a Capital Grille cardboard matte. Wow! She also took a picture with our camera (when she noticed it on the table).
The next course was french onion soup, which came out in a crock about the size of your head. And it was absolutely, hands down, the best french onion soup we’ve ever had. It was AMAZING. Unfortunately, we didn’t eat much of it since we figured that would do well reheating at home…and we knew we still had huge steaks coming! Before we could even think twice, it was boxed up and brought to our table in a bag.
Then, the steaks and sides. Wow, the steaks. I had ordered the Filet Oscar and wow, was it buttery. Cooked perfectly medium rare. The bearnaise was smooth and delicious, and the crab–oh, the crab! I have never seen such huge lumps of crabmeat on Oscar-anything, anywhere.
Hubby’s Porcini Rubbed Delmonico was also to-die-for. Sweet and savory, buttery, cooked perfectly rare. He barely made a dent in it, unfortunately, with all the food we’d already eaten plus the sides.
Oh, yes, the sides. The waitress had told us that all the sides were family style (and large portions) so if we wanted, she could do half portions. So we chose to do a half order each of lobster mac and cheese and augratin potatoes? The mac and cheese was so creamy and cheesy and filled with HUGE lobster chunks… I would definitely order that again. The AuGratin potatoes were good, too – but with all the other buttery cheesy food, I think some of the taste was lost on me. We took home leftovers of it all (except my filet, which hubby helped me finish).
Then, another on-the-house celebration surprise! Ricotta cheescake with a creme brulee topping and fresh fruit that was soooooo good. Wow was it good. Hubby, who doesn’t even really like cheesecake, liked it! I would definitely order that one again, as well.
Our waitress gave us her card and said to make sure we ask for her if and when we come in again…and she would love an update on our new baby!
So, overall, 5 stars for the atmosphere, 5 stars for the service, and 5 stars for the food. We just wish it wasn’t quite so expensive so we could go back more often!

Craigslist Job Titles – UGH
I hate job titles on Craigslist that have NO bearing on the duties listed.
For example, I was intrigued by a job titled “Proposal Coordinator/Editor” under Writing Jobs. Now, tell me how the following job is anything but a secretary?
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages telephone coverage and assures coverage of the reception area at all times. Answers phones according to the office’s procedures, routes calls to appropriate staff, takes accurate messages, maintains a record of telephone messages, and holds messages for pick-up. Retrieves messages from voice mail as appropriate. Greets all visitors and assists them while waiting; directs and distribute deliveries to the appropriate staff. Presents a courteous and cheerful attitude to visitors and staff. Assists the Vice President with all building management calls and helps to develop appropriate protocols for fire drills, key maintenance, security, and other building related matters. Provides clerical support for the Vice President and staff, assisting with research activities and special projects as requested. Writes, edits and types correspondence, reports, memorandums, and other materials as assigned. Schedules meetings and tracks project timelines. Assists with mailings, including federal express and UPS, copying, assembling, stuffing and posting. Maintains all office supplies, equipment and other office support activities. Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President Fishery Conservation and Management.
One of my friends commented:
The first section I have cut out 100% describes a receptionist position:
- Manages telephone coverage and assures coverage of the reception area at all times.
Now in between “assur[ing] coverage of the reception area at all times” the candidate is supposed to sandwich in three other jobs:
- Assists the Vice President with all building management calls and helps to develop appropriate protocols for fire drills, key maintenance, security, and other building related matters. Provides clerical support for the Vice President and staff, assisting with research activities and special projects as requested.
- Writes, edits and types correspondence, reports, memorandums, and other materials as assigned. Schedules meetings and tracks project timelines.
- Assists with mailings, including federal express and UPS, copying, assembling, stuffing and posting. Maintains all office supplies, equipment and other office support activities. Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President Fishery Conservation and Management.
The proper job title for the non-editing tasks would be “Administrative Assistant” (which is NOT just a high-falutin’ euphemism for ‘secretary’ — it reflects the fact that the job requires more skills and responsibility than an ordinary secretary would have).
So this job description describes three different jobs.
1) receptionist
2) AA
3) proposal writer/editor
Translation: we need someone to write and edit proposals, but that only happens once a year. You’ll really be a receptionist most of the time, except during proposal time, when you’ll have to make the proposals appear like magic, on top of your regular workload. Oh, and while you’re in the office, you may as well keep busy, so do all the stuff we need an AA for as well.
25 Random Things
I got tagged on Facebook to create a list of 25 Random things, facts, habits, or goals about myself. It’s great fun to read other people’s lists, and while you are reading their lists, you can think of a hundred things about yourself…until you try to write your own list. Anyway, I thought it was kinda fun, so decided to cross-post it here. Enjoy!
- Today I am laundering baby clothes for the first time.
- For the past month, I have spent just about the majority of every day on the couch with a laptop and remote at my side, and with a dog and cat on my lap under a blanket. It sucks being 7-8 months pregnant and having no energy.
- I really really really miss all our friends in North Carolina.
- We have no friends in Michigan (that are really close enough to do things with).
- I think I would go insane without our TiVo.
- I am aghast at the monthly gas bills here ($307 this month). That is insane, when you add the electric bill in, too. And we thought NC summers were bad!
- I love my Slanket.
- We have lived here almost three months and there is still unpacking to do. The basement is scary full of junk.
- BUT WE HAVE A BASEMENT!!
- Prenatal vitamins have done NOTHING for my nails. My nails are pathetic.
- Wooly Mammoth Crocs are the shit.
- I think our local Krispy Kreme should have a Twitter feed for when their donuts are Hot & Fresh so I know when to go.
- I love grocery shopping! You should see our freezer and pantry!
- I really don’t want to have this baby early, but DAMN I want to be rid of the acid reflux, heartburn, and neverending peeing.
- I thought I would love having wood floors, but turns out I don’t. They’re noisy and cold. At least in this house.
- I want fries.
- I am watching Bob & Tom Radio on WGN on the TiVo as I compile this list.
- I am trying to decide what shows to cut out of my viewing schedule, as I know that having a newborn will not be conducive to watching the same amount of TV as I do now. Damn kids. 😛
- I would KILL to go on a style show like Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style. I need a new style, a new wardrobe, a new haircut…and not the first clue how to go about it myself.
- I can’t wait until the day when we can have our dream house, in our dream location, with great friends, a basket of Bostons [Boston Terriers], and maybe one or two more kids.
- I watch “Jon & Kate Plus 8” because I figure if they can handle EIGHT kids, I can surely handle ONE.
- I really should be taking more pregnant pictures of me because, although I hate how I look now, I am sure I will want pictures of me later.
- I am not doing well on my everything-I-thought-I-would-get-done-while-I-wasn’t-working-before-the-baby-arrived to do list.
- Skip the Pet-i-Cure. It was great for the three or four times we used it until it died. That was $50 down the toilet.
- I am watching American Idol for the first time in years.
Hilarious Birth Story
Three years, one month, and ten days ago.
I was reluctant to share this story, because it feels self-indulgent, somehow (unlike, say, the rest of this blog? This blog that is all about me?) but then I read this and thought, hell, that’s good reading!
So here’s mine. This is not for the squeamish; there are bodily fluids and shrieking and Dan Rather sightings.
It was fourteen days exactly before the baby was due. I was at my weekly midwife appointment, and I was leaking. “I think,” I told the midwife, “that my water broke. Or, you know, is breaking.”
My husband was there. Because I was huge and cranky and exhausted, he had offered to come with me. I wouldn’t miss an opportunity to make him go to one of the endless number of appointments I had endured, so I said yes.

Glider rocker has been purchased!
We weren’t planning on spending money on a glider rocker quite yet, but we knew we wanted one… so after we researched them (gotta love the Baby Bargains book) and saw that the recommended ones were $400+ (not including ottoman), it was off to the baby store to actually sit in one to test it out (to see if it was really worth the money).
We also knew from past experience that not all gliders are not created equal, and I knew I’d have to sit in one before buying it to make sure I fit (well, my hips that is). And I have to say that the gliders were nice. NICE. But there was NO WAY we could afford a new one. Besides, even if we could, we asked and they apparently take 10-12 weeks to come in!
So I checked Craigslist and there were a few, so I emailed them and decided on one. We went to check it out (glider PLUS ottoman!) and it fit well and was comfortable, so now we have a glider! YAY!
Another registry – BuyBuyBaby!
This is a great local store that just opened about 15 minutes from us, and we took a walk through and it’s wonderful! It’s part of the same family as Bed Bath & Beyond, and it looks like it—with aisles of merchandise stacked to the ceiling. (For the anal organization part of me, it was heaven and I fell in love.)
Of course, they have mostly the same stuff as Babies R Us, but it seems they have a much larger selection (although, I am sure the Jacksonville store was small in comparison to the stores around here). I put a few things on the list that we liked, but really they are just ideas. I also don’t think I duplicated anything. We actually went back to the store today and added a bunch of stuff…including some duplicate stuff, but quite a bit of new stuff. We still have no good idea of what we really need, LOL, so are putting lots of stuff on there.
I have also added the link to the sidebar with the other registries.

Parent Hacks
Parenting tips from the real experts: actual parents!
Sample tips:
Denture tabs clean more than just dentures
Who knew denture tablets had so many uses? From Sarah:
I found the hack to use denture tabs for cleaning toothbrushes and teething toys, but they are also great for cleaning athletic mouth guards, night bite guards for teeth grinders, sippy cup valves, etc. I take a few with me when I travel to quickly clean pacifiers, spoons, etc. in hotel rooms. Also, a less toxic alternative to bleach products for cleaning toilet bowls is to let 2-3 denture tabs dissolve in the bowl before scrubbing. After throwing away flower arrangements, I fill the vase with water and throw in a couple to clean the scum off the inside. They are dirt cheap when you buy in bulk!Coffee beans in the diaper pail reduce the smell
Kristine’s hack will set you back a few (Star)bucks, but may be worth it:
When our son started eating solids, the poop—and therefore the diaper pail—got a lot stinkier. A friend suggested that I dump a bag of whole bean coffee in the bottom of the pail before I put the bag in. In order to contain the beans, I put them in a zip-up mesh laundry bag. I couldn’t believe that it worked! At first it smelled a little bit like Starbucks in my son’s room, but after about a week, we really couldn’t smell the coffee, and even better, we couldn’t smell the poop either.
Baby shower…and registries!
So, with everything on our minds lately, I hadn’t even thought about having a baby shower…so imagine my surprise when I got an email from one of our close friends telling me they were going to have a shower for me before we left!
Of course, I hadn’t registered for ANYTHING either…so it was off to Amazon and Babies R Us for a quick look, then I bombarded my friends for lists of MUST HAVE baby items. They came through for me—so their hints and tips, plus my own research, led me to quite a list at both places (although there is still way more to come, I’m sure). Links to each registry are in the right-hand column.

The Sarcastic Journalist
One of the pregnancy sites I’ve been visiting is hilarious—in fact, they’re the site where I picked up the pregnancy ticker/timeline at the top of the blog. Anyway, there’s a column (entry) written for every week of pregnancy, and this one in particular struck a chord—it’s from Week 5, the first week I started reading (before backtracking):
After getting over the initial “I’m having a baby!” shock, we began to spread the news. Of course, people asked how I was feeling.“Nervous,” I’d tell them. “Freaked.”
“If you are freaked then why are you having another baby? Why try if you’re going to be scared by the results?”
Might I add, at this point, that everyone who said that to me didn’t have kids.
The decision to have a baby is a lot like the decision to move to France. France sounds cool, other people like France. It would be fun to move to France!
Then you buy the plane ticket and France starts to seem a little scary.
You’ll have to learn a new language! They eat snails! Didn’t someone once tell you that people in France don’t shower that often?
Come to think of it, moving to France and having a baby have a lot in common.
I laughed out loud when I read this. I especially liked “France sounds cool, other people like France. It would be fun to move to France! Then you buy the plane ticket and France starts to seem a little scary.” That is SO how I’m feeling right now. It’s cool and fun to be pregnant and think about having a child…but it’s also scary as hell.
