Right now, it’s 95° with a relative humidity level of 56%…for a temperature that feels like 111°. I dare you to top that!

Our first day at the beach!
After being here three years, we finally decided to go to the beach (other than to take out-of-state visitors there to show them the ocean)! We went with a friend of ours (Jen) and her daughter (Isabelle)…and we took Maggie! We had a great time—Jen was thrilled because she actually got to swim (while either Tom or I watched Isabelle), Maggie had fun snarfing in the sand and playing in the water (plus, as a bonus, she got really tuckered out so she slept really well last night), and we all enjoyed an absolutely picture-perfect day with the most perfect weather (I think it may have been 85 at the most). The only downsides are that I lost my sunglasses (I’ve always worn them in the water, but a big wave caught me off guard) and we all got a little red. But, we had a good enough time that we definitely want to go back again!!
The most amazing double rainbow!
Yesterday it rained off and on all day (the effects of hurricane Alberto passing by) and when we were on the last of our errands after dinner, we pulled into Food Lion and were surprised to see THE MOST BEAUTIFUL double rainbow we’ve ever seen!
Also, not only was it a FULL double rainbow (meaning you could see each end, plus each end of the secondary rainbow), the secondary rainbow was extremely visible, PLUS the main rainbow was SO bright and SO strong that it actually had a THIRD rainbow directly inside the main arc. It’s hard to explain because I’ve never seen one like that before, but the inner rainbow was fainter, but you could still tell it was there. I would have KILLED for my digital camera!
Here’s the best picture I could find online that shows about what it looked like (you have to look really close at the inside of the main rainbow to see the third rainbow), although it was MUCH brighter.
It smelled like camping!
So I took the dog out this morning as usual, and it smelled wonderful outside! Like camping! Really, it did! A fresh, cool morning, with the sun shining brightly… not that that directly relates to camping, but that was what I immediately thought of.
Damn Weather Forecasts
Ten days ago, the weather.com forecast said there was going to be a 40% chance of rain the day of the party. Tom wanted to get a tent “just in case” and I said “Bah! There’s still 10 days to the party. The forecast will change. Besides, we have a big house—we can fit 60 people if we have to. It will be crowded, but we’ll be fine.” He called to find a tent anyway…but there were none to be had.
Earlier this week, we checked again and the forecast called for a 20% chance of rain. Yea! It looked to be a perfect day for a party!
Today, well, we’re up to 80% chance of precipitation. EIGHTY! Methinks we’re going to have a crowded house come Saturday afternoon…
Easter A/C
Happy Easter! Happy A/C!
We finally turned the A/C on for the first time this year… we were cooking and having people over for Easter dinner and didn’t want it to be too ungodly hot in the house. We should have turned it on yesterday, as it was about 87 degrees, but it was pretty breezy and by the time we wanted it on, it was like 7:00 and already cooling down. Tonight, however, it’s nice and cool, so we’ve already turned it off! I’m always scared to turn it on for the first time because it seems like it never goes off after that….and I hate the bills!
Easter dinner was delicious and we had a good time. It wasn’t the Len Easter, but we did share the meal with two of our best friends, Roger and Ursula. Oh, and of course Virginia and Caroline. Remember Caroline? The 1.2# preemie? Here she is now:
January 9 and 70 degrees!
The forecast for today is a high of 70…can you believe it? Right now it’s only 57, but then again, it’s only 10:45am. I am thoroughly enjoying the warmer weather, as it is actually unseasonably warm.
Amazing Weather
It’s been sunny lately, but chilly. So imagine my surprise when I went outside today—thinking it would be cold—and it was 66 degrees! I proceeded to immediately open up most of the windows in the house to get some fresh air—we won’t be able to do this much longer!
Waiting for Dad and Lin…
Dad and Lin should be on their way here from Raleigh right now. I hope everything is okay, as I was sort of expecting a call from them once they got to the airport or started on their way here. For now, I’m chalking it up to either A) forgetting, B) the rental car taking longer than anticipated, or C) getting lost!
On another note, the weather is GORGEOUS! Aside from a cold and rainy stretch around the time mom and David were here, it’s been in the 70s and sunny with no humidity! We haven’t turned the heat on once…and mostly always have the windows open! The breeze is amazing. This is the best time of year here. If it was like this year-round, you would never get me back home to Michigan!
Ophelia is gone!
Nothing happened. Well, after the flickering power, it went off just long enough to light a bunch of candles when it came back on. We cranked the A/C to 72 just in case we lost power overnight (we were in the eye when we went to bed) but were freezing at about 2am so Tom got up and turned it back up! He had today off but I had to go to work…
Intermittent power outages
Our power has flicked off and on about 8 times over the past 10 minutes…so, if you don’t get any updates in the near future (or before bedtime) it means our power is out. It’s frustrating because each time I’ve tried to send this, the power goes out again and we have to wait for the modem to reset!!
Getting more windy
It really hasn’t done anything here all day other than rain and blow. It is getting windier, though—as evidenced by the fact we had to finally shut the few windows that were open. We just turned the news on and apparently there’s water on some roads around us (the two main arteries to town, plus our local road)—although they didn’t go so far as to say flooding (I think it was “ponding”). I’m sure the weather is worse along the coast, but for us, it’s no worse than a normal storm. (The OBX has flooding and power outages, but they are RIGHT on the coast.)
Tom already knows he doesn’t have to go to work tomorrow (it was on the Camp Lejeune website) but I have no idea. I think they have a phone tree, but I have no idea where I am on it or when they would make the call. So, as far as I know, I’m going to work tomorrow.
Ophelia only a wimper so far.
It rained some overnight and has rained off and on today. There’s some wind, but nothing much to write home about… So, so far so good!
Ophelia is coming!
One of the bases is closed (New River, not Camp Lejeune—so Tom has to work), government offices and schools were closed today and are already closed for tomorrow, and amazingly, our office is going to be closed! There are some recommended evacuations for people in low-lying/flood areas and mobile homes in our county, but that’s all for now. I know any hurricane is bad, but I really don’t expect much. However, as you can expect, people are a little gun-shy right now thanks to Katrina so people are playing it safe.
Please don’t worry about us. We have lots of candles and batteries, we have extra water, both our gas tanks are full, we have a full propane tank in case we lose power for a long time and need to grill, our grill and swing are safely off the porch, and our neighbor’s trampoline (while not inside) is flipped over for less wind resistance. And, of course, our property insurance is paid up!
I don’t mean to make light of a hurricane warning, but right now, it’s not even raining (there’s a few sprinkles every so often) and the skies aren’t even dark or threatening. I know it could change at any time, though, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed. We’ll keep you updated.
P.S. I’m also emailing this.
Ophelia
I’m assuming that all the wind we’re getting is because of Ophelia, even though she’s still way off our coast at this point. We’re not really doing all that much to prepare—there’s not much TO do. As the storm gets closer, we will move our grill and porch swing inside, and that’s about all we can do with that stuff. My car will easily park in the garage and Tom’s will fit with some fancy rearranging. We should fill our propane tank and were actually going to do that today, except traffic was down to one lane and we did not want to lose our spot in line! And we have some extra water here so I don’t see any major problems. Oh, our neighbor also has a generator so he’s already said party as his house if the power goes out!
We’ll keep you updated!
Totally amazing weather!
The windows have been open all week, day and night. It’s so cool in the mornings that I sometimes get the chills, but hell if I’m closing the windows! I LOVE IT! If the weather was like this year ’round, we would live here until we die. Honest. So good thing for our families that this weather is rare!!
The amazing weather continues!
We left our windows open all yesterday and last night and now this morning…and it’s simply wonderful!! It’s 64 right now and nice cool breezes are wafting through the house…anad it feels like we’re home in Michigan! I only hope this weather continues and means we’re done with the extreme heat of summer (I don’t actually think this is the case, I just hope it to be true).
Unbelievable weather!
For the first time this summer, we have turned off the A/C and opened all the windows! It is still 84 but amazingly only 40% humidity. I never thought I’d say 84 was unbelievable…but it is. It’s so great to have fresh air blowing throughout the house.
Amazing Weather
Yesterday was the best day we’ve had (weather-wise) in a LOOOOONG time. It was probably 80 at the most, with relatively NO humidity. In the evening, it was actually so cool outside I was chilled. We even opened a window in our bedroom for the night! This morning is amazing as well—it’s barely 70 at 8:30am! I had forgotten what REAL weather was like! We’re not sure how long this is going to continue, but I’ll take as much as I can get!
Wow. Just, wow!
Long story short, we’re moved in to the new house. Long story long, it wasn’t without some annoyances and trauma. As you know, it started with our power being turned off Friday morning and it only got better from there.
Not house-related, but we had an appointment at lunch Friday to go visit a cat that we were considering adopting…a fully declawed Tabby that we were REALLY excited about (I really really want a Tabby). However, he is almost 20# (not a problem) and unfortunately as we discovered while visiting him, a nipper (a problem). We did not want to bring home an alpha male that bites/nips. So that was disappointing—it’s rare to find a fully declawed cat. Now on to house stuff.
I had called last week to find out about switching our water service. They told me it had to be done in person. Fine. Annoying to have to make the trip, but fine. So Tom had been meaning to get to it while he was home packing and moving, but never made it. So Friday afternoon, after closing (4pm), I went. So I get there and wait in line for about 15 minutes, and…they tell me they don’t service the new address (ARGH!) so I had to go halfway across town at 4:30 on a Friday to start service! (Yes, it was my fault for not asking and merely assuming the new house TWO miles away would be the same water…but annoying.) Anyway, before I left, I asked for a letter of recommendation for the new water place so I could hopefully avoid a deposit. She said “just have them call us” — okay. So I get to the new place and ask about avoiding the deposit and she said they need a letter. I said “They said just to call them to get the reference” and she said “Yeah, we don’t do that. We need a letter. And they will charge you $5 for it.” I said “You have GOT to be kidding me.” She assured me she wasn’t. I told them “You two water companies should really talk to each other. I can’t be the only one this happens to.” Then I wrote out a $45 deposit check. ARGH. (I will be getting the other water deposit back, but still.) Oh, and I asked about when I might be able to get my deposit back… “Once you have lived here for five years…” OMG! FIVE YEARS!? I was not a happy camper. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but stuff like this just rattles my cage.
So I get home, still fuming, and run into Tom on the road, taking a trailer of stuff to the new house. I tell him what happened with the water. So I was getting dinner ready and Tom seemed to be taking forever but I really didn’t think much about it. He finally comes in and says “I can top your water story” and proceeds to hold up the plastic tray from our grill and says “This is all that’s left of the grill.” Our $600 grill. I literally said (pardon my French): “You are fucking kidding me.” Apparently the strap broke and the grill went FLYING off the trailer doing 40mph. Luckily no one was in the opposite lane where it landed (although he did have to stop traffic to gather the pieces). And of course we can’t afford another $600 grill and I don’t want a cheapie grill now that we’ve had the best. UGH. We’re laughing about it now, but man, that just sucked hard core. (Actually, the grill really isn’t in pieces…but the smokestacks are crushed, the lid is buckled so it doesn’t close, and the knobs and such are missing. Apparently the gas line survived, along with the gas tank, so Tom and Roger think they can try fixing it.)
More utility fun. Tom called LAST WEEK to switch cable service (internet/tv). It was supposed to be turned off on Saturday at the old house and ON on Friday at the new house. Saturday morning…neither had happened. I called and…oh, wait, I didn’t call from our home phone because they turned that off Saturday morning, apparently at the crack of dawn (I scheduled it for Saturday, and they tell you “sometime Saturday” but it’s apparently first thing). So I had to waste my TracFone minutes ON HOLD forever while they told me…they didn’t have a disconnect order OR a connect order for either residence! YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. And it gets better. Apparently the lines haven’t even been run to the house yet (“Are there painted lines on your lawn? No?? Hmmm.”), so it could be UP TO TWO WEEKS to get service. No one told Tom this when he called to switch service A WEEK AGO. ARGH!!!!
And did I mention that the A/C was NOT WORKING at all on the second floor (we have two units, one for each floor)? We discovered this Friday after closing when Tom first walked in, about 5pm. Like you could get anyone to come fix A/C at all this time of year, let alone a Friday afternoon! But Roger came to the rescue and managed to find our contractor (who he happened to see in the neighborhood) who called the A/C guy…who, of course, happened to show up Saturday morning WHILE WE WERE GONE. Another call and the guy was scheduled to come back out Sunday! Phew! (So, this is jumping ahead, but our first night in the new house was spent on the air matress on the first floor where the A/C was working.) Apparently what had happened was the builder had the A/C set SO low that it froze the line.
Then we had been running late on packing, what with the 4-hour Friday power outage when Tom couldn’t get into the house (no keys, garage door opener didn’t work), but we were still aiming on being done by 3pm when the carpet guy came. But in the meantime, we were still loading stuff into the new house. (Actually, Roger and Tom were loading and hauling stuff to the new house, Dick [my bosses partner/myold Staples manager] and I were hauling boxes into the new house.) Anyway, around 2 we went back to the old house to get the last of the little things, still trying to beat the carpet cleaner and, of course…he was EARLY! In retrospect, we should have said “Sorry, you’re going to have to wait until 3!” But instead, we just piled all that was left into the garage, kitchen, and back porch (all areas he didn’t need to clean). Technically the house was ours until midnight, but we wanted to be DONE by 3. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out quite like that. Anyway, by this time we’re just exhausted but we have to finish. So it was power washing the garage floor and loading last-minute outside stuff like hose reels and hanging plants.
So around 5:30 we were back at the new house to shower to go have dinner at Roger and Ursula’s (which was fine, since we didn’t have much food available). So I have to find the shower curtain and liner and I get it all together and hang it up and…it’s too short. There was a good 6″ of space between the bottom of the curtain and the bottom of the shower. (We have a shower now, with just a little lip on the bottom.) I was about ready to cry. Not that it was a big deal…I was just exhausted and my entire body hurt and we were upstairs without A/C and all I wanted was a simple shower! Luckily the rod wasn’t screwed in—it was just a tension mount—so we could move it. Well, actually it wasn’t a tension mount because we couldn’t change the width—all we could do was slide it down the wall…which worked, but now it’s out about 4″ too far so the curtains are at an angle. And I still managed to get a huge puddle of water on the floor. And we had the crappy showerhead because we didn’t have the plumber’s tape to install our own showerhead. OH YEAH—I forgot—we also didn’t have hot water since no one had turned the hot water heater on—but luckily it was SO hot upstairs that we didn’t want a hot shower—cool was just fine.
This isn’t directly related to us, but just an update: we talked to the buyers on Saturday afternoon (they showed up while we were there), and he was asking us THEN where he had to go to turn on water and power. This was after I already told his agent THREE WEEKS AGO and she told him, plus I told him personally about the water because I had to give him directions, plus the messages she left about the power issue on Friday. He is a nice guy, but totally clueless.
So Sunday Tom had to go back again to take out the laundry sink…and stuff we forgot in the kitchen like my purse and the vacuum (I thought Tom was loading everything into the car and Tom thought I would at least grab my purse). Hoo boy. I’m glad we at least know the buyers a little and they’re nice enough to not destroy or steal anything!
The A/C guy came and fixed the A/C. Now it’s working like a charm. I painted the office…I didn’t really want to paint so soon, but we wanted to get that room set up, and once all the computer stuff is in and all the cords are all over, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to paint, and we didn’t want to have to set the room up twice…so I painted it. It wasn’t too bad—the painter’s tape I used this time did its job wonderfully…but we somehow ended up with a dime-sized blotch of paint on the carpet. OH MY GOD. I wanted to scream! I blame it on Tom, LOL, because I had everything covered with a drop cloth (because I was PARANOID about not getting paint on the carpet)…and at the very end, he came in to help fold up the tarp and… later when we’re setting up the office, I noticed the paint. Hoo boy. It never fails.
Sunday dinner I start making something…and realize the plastic utensils we’d been using are just not going to cut it for this meal…so we go on a 20-minute hunt for silverware. Of course it’s not with all the other kitchen stuff because I totally forgot about it, so it’s in an unlabeled “last-minute item” box. Or so I thought. Turns out it was in a “kitchen” box—actually in the kitchen that I’d already opened—I just hadn’t fully unpacked it.
Oh, and the cats. OH MY. They are soooooooo confused. They didn’t like being in the carriers of course, but we only let them out in one room (with their litterbox) while we went to dinner at Roger’s. We let them out when we came home and oh my, the crying and meowing… They freaked out whenever we left them and they couldn’t understand the upstairs and downstairs and got especially confused with the balcony. They would be downstairs crying and we’d call them from the balcony and they just meowed louder and louder, never looking up. It was like they were crying for us to come get them and lead the way. It was so funny. It’s better now after a day, but the first night, Fuzzy started crying in the middle of the night and Tom had to go find him and he carried him upstairs to the litterbox—that was what he wanted. He apparently got lost or couldn’t find it or didn’t remember… now, a day later, that’s been okay, too. It’s been an adventure.
So that’s where we are. Now we just have a ton of unpacking and painting to do….
Ugh, the humidity!
This morning when I got up (about 7am) it was already 75° with 94% humidity. NINETY-FOUR PERCENT HUMIDITY! It’s just insane.
No fireworks for us
We decided to skip the fireworks tonight. We had actually planned on going (a big deal for us, since Tom doesn’t like them) but then it started raining and we didn’t want to deal with that. So, it was another year without fireworks…maybe next year??
Golf Clinic Rescheduled
It’s too nasty again weather-wise today, so the clinic has been rescheduled for next month. Crap. This means I have another month to wait without playing—or another month to teach myself bad habits! But, on the plus side, it’s sooooo damn hot and muggy lately that I wouldn’t really want to be outside anyway.
Golf Clinic Postponed
Unfortunately, my golf clinic was postponed due to weather—it’s been storming all day. It’s rescheduled for the next two days…although I don’t have high hopes, since this weather is supposed to continue all week.
That time of year!
Yes, folks, it’s that glorious time of year again…when all you do is jump from the air-conditioned house to the air-conditioned car to the air-conditioned office back to the air-conditioned car back to the air-conditioned house! Once in a while you throw in a trip to an air-conditioned restaurant or air-conditioned store!
I think it’s also time to lower the temp in the house, too. It’s been at 76 for a week or so now, which has been just about right. However, this morning, I was actually SWEATING while just standing in the bathroom getting ready. That’s crazy!
Humidty Wave
Well, it’s started. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to continue (until the end of summer) or if we are expected to have a short reprieve before the REAL summer weather starts…but the past week has been in the mid 80s and HUMID. So, just when I was actually getting used to 80-degree days (i.e. not needing to put the A/C on) and being happy about it, the humidity started and now the A/C has been on, steady, for one week. Yuck. It’s this time of year when I start dreaming of being home in Michigan for the summer.
Rain Rain Go Away
It has seriously been raining, on and off (but mostly on) for a week now. Sometimes it’s just an outright downpour, sometimes it’s just a light rain, sometimes it’s barely a sprinkle, and very rarely do we get a few moments of beautiful sunshine. But at least it’s not typical June weather of 90 and humid, right?
Brrrrr…. 55 is cold!
What a change in weather! It stormed last night and it’s downright COLD today…55 measly degrees! And it’s damp! YUCK! It’s especially chilly after having mid- to high 80s all last week! We are such wusses now… Michigan winters are going to absolutely KILL us for the first few years!!
Gorgeous Weather!
Today’s weather has been just perfect as you can see…not too warm (80) and not too humid (53%). It’s been overcast and breezy which, when combined with the low humidity, makes for a great day (still not really warm enough for me to want to hit the beach, though—-maybe when it hits 90+). Unfortunately, Tom volunteered for duty today (to take the place of someone who needed to visit a parent in the hospital) so he’s not getting to enjoy it. I, however, took a nice nap on the porch swing so I could fully enjoy the nice cool breezes! It’s started to sprinkle/light rain on and off over the past half hour, so now it SMELLS great, too!
A/C today
I finally turned on the A/C on my way home from work today—-the first time this year! It was only 86 and wasn’t THAT warm (i.e. no humidity)—-I could have lived with the windows down—-but that would really have messed up my hair and I didn’t feel like dealing with it. But we still haven’t turned on the A/C at home yet…I can’t wait to see when that happens. I’m really enjoying the warm weather (especially when I know it’s 40 in Michigan) but I am NOT ready for summer yet.
