Valentines Party

All three of us made it to Owen’s Valentines party! (You can see Tom sitting behind Owen.)

This is the valentine he made for us:

Katie made herself at home in the Comfort Corner with a doll and a tea cup:

A few random pictures from his classroom:

This has been up for awhile (when the letter of the week was obviously P). From the word Owen provided, I can tell you it was the week he earned a new Lego that was a Paintball player. 🙂

The class helping chart:

I later asked Owen what his job meant:

Well, we clean up and help people who clean up. If someone needs me, I help them.

Crystal clear, right? 🙂 I asked what some of the other jobs were and got equally as vague answers. I’m sure they’re positively clear in his mind…

And our last valentine treat:

Working on Valentines

These are the valentines we’re doing for Owen’s class:

Except I’m not being quite as cute with the cellophane bags and tie—we’re doing ziplock sandwich bags. 🙂

Here’s Owen writing his name on them. He only has the patience for about 4-5 at a time so we’re working on it all week.

20140212-085443.jpg

He’s pretty good writing his name, though the W could use some separation and the N is often backwards. And we’re working on keeping the size consistent.

Owen’s Christmas Party

It’s not really a party—it’s more like a post-afternoon-snack snack with treats like M&Ms, cheese balls, and candy canes with the parents standing off to the side watching the kids eat. It’s exactly how the Halloween party played out as well…but just not what I’d think a party would be. But then again, it is only Pre-K…maybe the parties get better. 🙂

First parent/teacher conference!

I honestly wasn’t surprised at most of the stuff she told me—we know he’s a smart kid.

He knows all his colors and shapes. He apparently didn’t know what a rhombus was—but I think that’s okay for Pre-K. 🙂 (But in his favor, he does know what a trapezoid is from one of his games but they didn’t ask that.)

She was very impressed that he knows all his uppercase and most of his lowercase letters. I said he knows ALL of his lowercase letters (and has known them for almost two years) but he often gets sidetracked when questioned. She agreed—she says she’s seen it, too. So she’s going to start working with him more on sounds (which they’ve already started). I told her he can say the alphabet backwards—and she really didn’t believe me. He got to about T then fizzled out because he was playing with Katie. But she was impressed. 🙂

She said he can count and recognize numbers to 13—and again I said he knows to at least 20 and he likely lost interest or got sidetracked. She agreed, as she’s seen him recognize other numbers. I told her he can count by tens to 100 and asked him to do it, but of course he wasn’t in the mood so he didn’t get very far.

He can write his first name so they’re going to start on the spelling of his last name. But they are also going to work more on him writing his name a consistent size. I said “OH YES! At home, he will write a huge O, then a tiny W halfway across the page, then a teeny E, and a sketchy N.” 🙂

She said his fine motor skills have definitely gotten better. He can now walk along the balance-beam-type-rail they have on the playground instead of falling off and he can jump from one spot to another (I haven’t been on the playground to see what spots she’s talking about). He can’t skip, but she said not many of them can.

He does well with verbalization—his speech is getting a lot better (she says she can understand just about everything) and he can express his emotions well. “Owen shows great language, social-emotional, and cognitive development. He’s able to express his feelings and use his words to explain himself.”

So, overall a very good report!!

Cotton Ball F, Corn, and Finger Painting

These were from about two weeks ago that I forgot to post. 🙂

I think he came up with the F words on his own (you can’t see them in the picture): feel, fun, firefighters, friends, fish

This one was done with corn. I was really confused about that for a bit…until he told me that it was an ear of corn. Ahhh yes, that makes more sense. 🙂

Owen’s first school pictures!!

Hell, technically his first ever professional pictures!! (I had the professional photographer come when he was about six months old but that never turned out…and I had my professional photog cousin take some pics one weekend at a family gathering, but it wasn’t anything official.)

I am BEYOND THRILLED and honestly a little amazed at the perfect smiles and cute poses! I mean, just look at the goofy grin I got this morning! I was really worried about getting one good shot, and I got three! Of course I think Pose B is hilarious because that’s just SO not him but it’s such a typical school photo shot—I love it! I had no idea there would be three options, as the form we filled out just let us pick a color background (beige, blue, or red) and accessories (the letters J-O-Y, etc.).

So after I posted them on Facebook, Tom messaged me:

Tom: OMG! How did you know?
Me: How did I know what?
Tom: The Shirt. Rob and I had to wear matching blue shirts for every school picture, until 6th grade.
Me: Ha ha, I had no idea. I just wanted him in blue since he looks good in blue and I knew I could pick a blue background.

Talk about fate. 🙂

Oh, and…CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. 😈

And, wow have school photos come a long way—you didn’t get an order form ahead of time. As I mentioned, we just got the background and accessory request. You get the order form with the proofs about two weeks later with a website and code numbers to see the proof and order everything from holiday cards to mugs and notepads. I haven’t gotten to check the prices on anything yet, but I’m guessing I’ll just get the smallest package that gets me all three pictures and then I’ll use them as I normally would in my Shutterfly things. STAY TUNED.

Singing the poop song.

He sang a funny on-the-spot made up poop song for me so I asked him to sing it again so I could record it. Of course it wasn’t anything close to what he originally sang, but it was still cute. PLUS! I got the bonus of a pee song. (It’s obviously school-related since he talks about teachers and going back to your “center” which is the different learning areas of the classroom like Library, Housekeeping, Art, and Science.)

I’ll try again another night and see what I get!

Owen’s Halloween Party

I walked into controlled bedlam. Or maybe it just felt that way to me, since I am unaccustomed to being in a room full of little kids. 🙂 It was actually quite calm—just noisy. I regret not taking a video so you could fully understand. 🙂

20131101-125748.jpg

Katie loves coming in (which she rarely gets to do because I leave her in the car while I run him in or pick him up). She gets into everything. I tried to keep her corralled with cheese and crackers today but it only lasted so long.

20131101-125919.jpg

Then daddy called so he could see the party.

20131101-130023.jpg

It didn’t last too long, though, since we couldn’t hear each other due to all the ambient noise. But what was funny is that the teacher saw me holding my phone up and was like “Oh, what do you have there?” I’m guessing she thought I was showing Owen something or taking a video. When I told her it was Owen’s daddy on Skype she was really surprised! And excited! So she got to meet Tom briefly today. (Again, it was loud so it wasn’t much more than “Hi! Nice to meet you!”)

The Physical Saga

So when Owen switched from daycare to pre-k, no one told me he needed a new physical form filled out so I was a bit surprised when it popped up on the check-in monitor saying it’s overdue. I got the form from admin right then, went home, and used the doctor’s office web portal (as they suggest) to request an appointment.

Well, life is busy and I didn’t realize that they hadn’t gotten back to me in four days, so I called to schedule the physical—and of course they couldn’t get me in for another week, but whatever. So I show up yesterday and am told he’s already had his age 4 physical (that’s what the four-year well-visit is) and it’s good for a year…so if I go to the appointment today I will be charged since our insurance only allows one physical per year. They let me cancel so that part was fine, but I was still annoyed because had I known/realized that the well-visit check was the same exact thing as the required physical, I could have just dropped the form off TWO WEEKS PRIOR when I first got the warning message. So they tell me it will be two business days and I don’t give it another thought.

So this morning I drop Owen off at school and he’s super excited because it’s Halloween and he’s dressed as Thor and there’s a parade walk through the school scheduled and a party in the afternoon and it’s all just very exciting for a four-year-old. As I’m driving home, I get a phone call from the school asking if I had Owen’s physical, because if they don’t have it TODAY, he can’t be at school and I’ll have to come pick him up.

WAIT. WHAT? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.

Yes, today is the absolute very last day he can be there without the physical form on file. I wonder how I didn’t know this. To be honest, I know I didn’t look too closely at the “due by” date, but there was NO warning that he wouldn’t be able to attend without it. And today of all days?!?!

I WAS LIVID.

So, I asked why they didn’t tell us ahead of time that he needed a physical and she said they did. I would have bet my life they didn’t, though, because I know I went through EVERYTHING in the welcome packet and there was no “new physical form” in there. The first time I heard it mentioned was when the notice popped up on the check-in monitor and I [started to make] the appointment that day—but of course that didn’t go quite as planned so I did waste some time. She said if they could fax it today he can stay, otherwise he’ll have to go home.

So when I get home, I call the doctor’s office and explained what was going on…and nope, nothing they can do, they are super busy and mine was the last one turned in. I practically beg, saying I’m going to have to take my son away from his Halloween party at school, yada yada yada. Nope, sorry. She didn’t even sound apologetic, which was annoying. At least fake it. She said she’d put a note on it and would call me if anything changed, but I can guarantee that won’t be happening. It’s really annoying because all it is is transcribing a few notes from his file to the piece of paper and checking a few boxes. Sure, there might be a pile of them, but each one can’t take more than 5-10 minutes. And you’d think they’d have a heart…but no.

I was so pissed. And I knew it would kill Owen—if they don’t get it there today he can’t go to school tomorrow on PJ day, which he’s been looking forward to all week. I admit I cried for a minute. 🙁 Then my anger took over and I went on a hunt for the welcome folder (which I’ve been meaning to do anyway since I need to put Owen’s birth certificate back in the safe) and looked through EVERYTHING again. No mention of any physical in any of the welcome materials and, of course, no form. Had there been a form, I would have definitely seen it when I first went through it.

So I decided that I would go in and pick him up at 10:30 when I knew the parade would be over. We’d then have to skip the party at the end of the day because that’s part of school, too. So I first went to talk to the admin, just to clarify HOW I was supposed to have known about the physical. She started by saying she will let him stay for today and the party (which made me happy—though it would have been nice if she said that earlier to save me a trip into town) and was then surprised when I told her I went through the welcome packet but there was no form in there (I told her “That’s why I asked for the form the other day—because it was the first time I’d heard of it.”). She basically blew that off saying “Hmmm, well there should have been a form but maybe I missed it.” That’s it? I thought I deserved a bit more of an apology than that, since none of this would have happened if the form would have been in the folder. (Yes, mistakes happen, but there’s a difference between realizing it on Day 1-14 as opposed to Day 31 when you’ve been called on it.)

ANYWAY, I also suggested it would be nice if the popup warning actually said “YOUR CHILD CAN’T ATTEND WITHOUT THIS PHYSICAL” and she said one of the three warnings did say that. Wait. Three? I only got one. Yeah, turns out the first notice was the Friday he missed school for being sick (when Grannie and Papa were here) and the second one must have been a day they picked him up and couldn’t get the fingerprint scanner to work so the office staff checked him out. So, basically a perfect storm of events from Day 1.

She really is a nice lady, and I didn’t want her to think I was a crazy person (plus I have to deal with her for the rest of the school year!), so I apologized for being so confused and told her I’m really not this disorganized…but apparently a bunch of little things went wrong from the beginning that just made it all weird. She seemed to think I wasn’t a lunatic (or at least she was good at faking it!) so I think we’re good.

Of course, if the doctor’s office can’t promise to get it to the school by like 10am tomorrow, he can’t go to PJ day. I don’t hold out hope…so today I get to make a big deal about staying home with mommy for a PJ and movie day just in case. And then hope they have it ready at 8am Monday, otherwise he gets a day at home with Gramma Jean (which wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world)…

Spirit Week: Costume Day

He had wanted to be Superman up until last night when we were trying on all the costumes. He wanted to be the ninja except school has a NO WEAPONS policy and he didn’t want to wear the costume without the sword. So he agreed on Thor, which I was completely happy with since it was a costume from last year that he didn’t wear and this would be the last year he’d fit in it.

2013-10-31kids001

(Yes, Thor has a hammer. I asked if it was considered a weapon and they told me they were allowing it but it had to be put away except for during the parade.)

Spirit Week: 80s Day

Again, I had to ask for help in figuring out just what Owen could wear for 80s Day. We don’t have any neon, I can’t peg his pants (too hard for him to get out of if necessary), no big sunglasses, no legwarmers, no parachute pants, no penny loafers, no pastel tees and white jackets…and I refused to spend any money. I still can’t get over why they don’t have simple days like “hat day” or “backwards day” — seriously, 80s day? I’m guessing most of the parents were BORN in the 80s or later. :/

Anyway, these colors are much darker than I wanted them to be, but it was the only “set” that came anywhere close to matching. I tried putting gel in his hair but I have no experience with that and his hair is a little long. If I had planned ahead and practiced it might have worked better, but again, that’s a lot of work for pre-k spirit week. 🙂

The thing he was MOST excited about was his new ninja shoes (they’re ninja shoes because they came with a comic book that has ninjas in it). All morning he kept saying “I can’t wait to show everyone at school my new ninja shoes!”

Spirit Week: Wacky Day

This week is Spirit Week at Owen’s Pre-K and I was clueless about the first day—Wacky Day. Wacky Day? Give me an Inside Out Day or a Backwards Day…but Wacky? After asking some other parents and getting some ideas (some of which we didn’t have the stuff for like hair paint), Owen was totally on board with it. He ended up with a backwards shirt mismatched with shorts, two different socks, two different shoes…and pig tails like Katie (except he wanted them out about 20 seconds after I put them in—I made him keep them in for pictures).

Another early day for Owen

Since Owen didn’t have a fever and felt and looked fine this morning, he went to school (even with the cough). Lin and I were out running errands during Katie’s nap when I got the call about noon…he had been coughing so hard that he threw up. And unfortunately, he didn’t quite make it to the bathroom so made a mess. They said technically he didn’t have to go home but he was upset and crying and wanted to go home. They thought (and I assured them they were likely correct) that he was just upset because he didn’t make it to the toilet and made a mess. So I said we’d come and get him after we finished our errands. We were there within 30 minutes and he was happy to see us, but of course didn’t seem sick at all…he just had the cough. Poor kid.

What happened to us?

Otherwise titled I guess there’s no better time to get crazy sick than two hours after your parents arrive for their two-week visit…and as long as we’re at it, no better time for BOTH kids to get sick as well.

I started feeling headachy about an hour after we got back from the airport yesterday and thought it was because I hadn’t eaten much all day…so had a snack and some water. And it got worse. Then I felt nauseous. Then I was spouting from both ends, as they say.

I was REALLY thankful that Grannie Lin and Papa were here, even though I felt bad they walked straight into kid duty.

But, because they were here, I could just relax…and then go to bed early. Like 7:47 I had my lights out and phone off early. I tossed and turned and slept fitfully until about midnight when I finally fell into a good sleep.

In the morning I felt fine…and learned that Owen had woken up crying loudly about 10pm (I am amazed I missed it). But he didn’t have a fever and looked and said he felt fine, so it was off to school.

I got a call about 11:30 saying he had thrown up but didn’t have a fever so he could stay at school, but they were just letting me know what was going on. (Apparently they have to throw up twice in an hour or have a fever to be sent home.) But then about half an hour later I got a call saying he hadn’t gotten sick again but he wasn’t eating lunch and was crying and asking for his mama so it was up to me. So I went to get him. They told me a stomach bug has been going around. (And in the meantime, the friends who had the gymnastics birthday party yesterday emailed and apologized saying that they’d seen a lot of our Facebook posts and added to their family…it appears a bug may have been spread at their party.) So who knows what really happened.

Owen seemed somewhat better once he was home, but I made him rest and drink water. I was thankful Katie was the vision of health. Until a few hours later when she suddenly barfed all over herself and the couch. And as I was gathering her up and getting dad and Linda to help out…I heard Linda rushing Owen to the bathroom where he puked.

Sigh.

Then Katie seemed fine and Owen seemed pretty okay…but tired out. He finally fell asleep and slept hard for a good two hours when I struggled to wake him up and got him to pee and go to bed. Katie seemed fine the rest of the night.

Here’s hoping it’s a less-than-24-hour thing for them, too, and they’re both healthy tomorrow. AND that the grandparents don’t get it…
