Volunteering, Day 2

Katie was super excited to go to Owen’s class today. As soon as we walked in the room, she asked if she could go play with the dolly. 🙂 So off she went and I busied myself getting more yarn ready for the same art project (I’d have the rest of the kids—including Owen—today).

The teacher told everyone Owen’s mom was here again and so was his little sister. For the most part, Katie being there was NO problem whatsoever. There was only one time when I saw her over playing with the blocks…and some of Owen’s classmates got sidetracked and were there with her, too. A quick talk from the teacher sent them back to their groups and it was fine after that. She pretty much stayed in the “housekeeping” area (with a table and chairs, kitchen, dolls, dishes, and pots and pans) except for once when she wanted to get on the computers and two very short times she came out and wanted to come with me. I simply pointed to the kitchen and told her to go play—and she did!

Today Owen was at the coloring table and my art project table. He was being a bit boisterous at the coloring table—yelling across to a friend at the art table—and I had to tell him to sit down and color a few times. (But it wasn’t just him. I had to talk to a few of the kids.) Then once he was at the art table, he was being a bit of a showoff and I had to subtly tell him to cool it. He was lacing standing up out of his chair and making all these grand sweeping movements and loudly saying how easy it was and how fast he could do it. I was like “Where did this obnoxious little boy come from?” (I mean, it was partially cute but if it was any other kid it would have annoyed me 100% so it was partially annoying me. If anyone else had done that I would have told them to sit down as well.) So that was interesting.

IMG_2889.JPG

Towards the end of the hour, I went over and asked Katie to pick up all her blocks…which she did! With no further prodding from me! Yay Katie! Then at the very end of the hour she picked up most of the housekeeping toys, too. 🙂 When the teacher had the class thank us for coming in to help, the assistant also made sure to tell the class that Katie picked up most of the toys by herself. (I’m guessing they have issues with the kids picking up after themselves!)

I’m so glad I got to be there for two days! And since Katie was so well behaved, we were invited back any time! (This is a big deal because little kids generally aren’t welcome.) YAY KATIE! 🙂

Volunteering in Owen’s class!

We got an email from Owen’s teacher that they needed help in class this week to get ready for Thanksgiving. Tom was going to be working from home so I’d be able to go without Katie!

I was there a few minutes early so got to see them practicing a Thanksgiving song. Owen was a leader…until he saw me watching then got shy so he was replaced.

IMG_2844.JPG

I was in charge of the art project—lacing yarn to make a pouch. I had to cut yarn lengths, tape the ends, and tie them to the pouches (then assist the kids). It’s amazing the differing abilities of all the kids—some pay attention and follow instructions well and some DO NOT. Let’s just say I was kept busy untangling and unthreading bad lacing. 🙂

Unfortunately, I didn’t get Owen at either of the two tables I was watching over (the art project and a coloring project).

IMG_2846.JPG

IMG_2847.JPG

I was asked if I could possibly come back tomorrow because no one else had responded yet. I said I could if I could bring Katie. The teacher had said before she thought it would be okay to bring Katie since she seemed to play well by herself. So I said we’d try it!

Lunch and library with my little man

Ironically, I had planned on coming in for Owen’s lunch today (since Tom was going to be home!) and he was super excited about that. When I got there, I saw them still out at recess.

I watched him play for a good five minutes before one of his friends saw me and pointed me out! Then he came running over to give me a hug over the fence. 🙂

Eating lunch! He is SUCH a card—I was stealing his apple pieces and he thought that was hilarious and kept laughing and telling all his buddies that I was an apple stealer. I do have to say that I am glad Owen eats all of his lunch—I’d say maybe one kid aside from Owen ate his whole lunch, maybe four picked at about half of it, and two didn’t eat more than a few bites.

IMG_2796.JPG

While we were there, his classroom assistant teacher came up and said hello then said “Aren’t you proud of Owen for his award?” And I basically said “Yeah, but I didn’t know anything about it so we weren’t there! And his dad was home, too!” You could see the light bulb go off and she apologized, saying they were working late at school last night and totally forgot to email or call, that she remembered at 10 and assumed it was too late, and then forgot in the morning. She seemed to feel badly. I felt a little better since she did apologize, but honestly I was still pissed. Of course it would be US this happened to and no one else since the beginning of school. 🙁 She did say she had him keep the award so they could take a picture of him with it sitting in the teacher’s chair so hopefully I’ll at least get that. [[Note: Owen didn’t bring the award home and I haven’t received any word of any picture and he said they didn’t take one. Sigh.]]

Anyway.

I heard her mention that they were going to the library after lunch and Owen asked if I was coming, too. I said I sure could!

It’s a process, let me tell you. They all had their coats (since they had had recess right before lunch) and their lunch bags (since they had just been at lunch) so they had to deposit all that stuff outside the library! Well, actually, the coats went in a pile outside the door and their lunches went in a pile inside the door. Then they all filed in to the story area where the librarian read them a book.

IMG_2653.JPG

Then she handed out apples with their names on it (which I later learned has their borrower code on it for checking out books) and told them to go get their books! I had thought we would be in there for 10-15 minutes with kids looking for and picking out books, but by the time the last kid got his apple, the first ones were checking out. By the time I walked over, Owen had his book already checked out, had his lunch box, and was waiting in line to leave! Apparently the library is a very well-oiled machine. 🙂 Then on their way out, they had to grab their coat (which the teacher had lined up all along the hallway). I hugged Owen and said goodbye!

Owen’s Good Character Award

So I was sitting at home minding my own business when I got this text from our neighbor:

BIG CONGRATS TO OWEN!

IMG_2638.JPG

IMG_2637.JPG

Wait, what?! He got a good character award and no one told us?!?! I was PISSED. There was no email, no note in his daily folder, nothing. And Tom was actually home and we ALL could have been there!

I know in the grand scheme of things it’s not a big deal, but he gets SO excited when we’re there and he would have been over the moon about this. I actually momentarily had thought about just going (since I go on random Fridays), but this morning was a bit crazy as there was someone supposed to be here working on the garage so we were waiting and waiting but then they canceled…

So, I was happy that at least she was there and grabbed a few shots for me…but I literally wanted to cry because we missed it. 🙁

I sent a quick email to the teacher asking why we hadn’t been told in advance. (Past awardees have been alerted via email so precedent has been set, otherwise I wouldn’t think twice about it.) I am sure it’s just my bad luck. 🙁

But…YAY OWEN! 🙂

Parent/Teacher Conference

I was excited to go to Owen’s P/T conference because I was DYING to know how he was doing—I really really miss being able to talk to the teacher for a few minutes in the morning and/or afternoon every day like I did in pre-k.

Katie was so excited to be going to Owen’s classroom that she was RUNNING in. Owen was carrying the bag of leaved he and Katie had collected for an upcoming school project (he was sent home with a ziploc bag but they went a little crazy—this way, he didn’t have to take them on the bus).

This was from Owen’s journal. They write/draw in it every Monday—something that they did over the weekend. She asked me if he had gone to the school Halloween party and I said yes—and it’s EXACTLY what is depicted here: Owen with the broom that was used in one of the games to run around the cones along with candy at a table. It was SO perfect and so cute I had to grab a picture of it! We talked about his drawings and that his people are getting much better—they work with them on making the legs and arms rectangles instead of just lines and it occurred to me that yes, his people have started having rectangular arms and legs! (These are the things I never thought about.)

2014-11-04 08.29.22

This got sent home with us today, too, from pumpkin week! She said the ripped and cut paper is great for dexterity and to let him cut as much as he wants to. She asked if he does small things like Legos and I said “OF COURSE! HE LIVES TO PLAY WITH LEGOS!” But apparently he could still use more practice with fine motor skills so we need to get out some nuts and bolts and let him go to town.

2014-11-04 10.48.20

Overall, she said Owen was doing REALLY well. She said they don’t do report cards per se, but they do have a form that tracks the basics of what the kids know. They actually pull them out for one-on-one testing and are “graded” 1-4, with 1 being (I think) “Does not meet expectations” to 4 “Exceeds expectations” and that 2s (needs work) and 3s (meets expectation) are expected and normal. As you can see, Owen has all 2s and 3s.

2014-11-04 1st quarter parent conference notes

She knows he can do the more complex patterns, but she hadn’t yet had the chance to officially test him on them. She said she needed to redo the sorting and classifying as well because he was the last one before recess and she could just see him glaze over and could tell she was losing him. I said that sounds about right. 🙂

A few of his 2s (“completes assignments on time” and “uses time constructively”) were things that sounded exactly like him, too—he’s a perfectionist so he takes too much time trying to get things exactly right and then doesn’t have enough time to finish the assignment. (I can see it at home with homework, too. If the sheet says to practice his letters, instead of just doing two or three practice letters, he crams about eight into the space. At home it’s fine because we have unlimited time…not so much at school.)

She said they have noticed that he can read and we talked about that—what I can do at home to help him since the books that get sent home for daily reading are really too easy for him. She doesn’t really have harder books and can’t really send more than one (he’d go through them too fast) so we are to work on comprehension of what he reads (she said lots of kids can read really well but have no idea what they read). Fair enough. She was impressed, though, and said he was on the advanced end, as there are kids who are still learning their letters!

She showed me a math journal (which was lots of shapes) and a poetry journal (which is where they paste a poem they learned and then they have to draw and color something from the poem).

We talked about homework—she said she hates it and doesn’t care if they do it or return it (and that she rarely looks at it—she has the assistant look over it). She said the kids work all day at school and she’d much rather have them go outside and play when they get home! (Then why does it get sent home?) But, I told her I liked that there was just a few minutes a day because that way he learns he has to schedule it and make sure to get it done (since he needs more practice with organization).

So overall a great report in my book! She said he’s very polite and has noticed he can be emotional (yep, that’s my boy!). People told me to just give the teacher a chance and she would know all about Owen before too long…and I was hesitant. But after eight weeks I feel like she has a grip on his abilities and personality and is on top of things.

Then it was time to hit the playground!!

Spirit Day and My Little Pumpkin

I was originally excited thinking that kids would dress up for school today but with the school-wide party last week and early dismissal today, today was a “spirit day” and they were supposed to dress in orange and black. And Tom actually was home this morning and got Katie dressed—and then I remembered at the last possible minute before heading to the bus stop that I had to put her in the sweater that I’ve been waiting a year and a half for (a hand-me-down from the Beson girls!).

Owen’s first Halleyween!

Owen’s school had a Halloween (Halleyween) party tonight with games and snacks and dancing! It was quite loud and chaotic, so we didn’t stay really long, but we did stay long enough for Owen to play a few games, see some friends, and have a cupcake!

Bullying Prevention Assembly

Today Owen’s school had a Bullying Prevention Assembly instead of the normal Friday morning program, so we got to see most of that (we came in after it started to see Owen’s class perform a poem). I recorded the poem but we were far away and it was hard to hear in person (and even moreso on the video) so here’s a screenshot:

Pumpkin Patch Field Trip

Owen’s first out-of-school class field trip was to a local nursery that has a pumpkin playground. I really wanted to go and help chaperone but I couldn’t take Katie on the bus, so we just met them there.

I actually went to the school first so I could follow the bus, so we got to visit Owen’s classroom for a few minutes. One of Owen’s classmates said to him “Owen, your sister is sooo cute!” and Owen said “Thank you!” 🙂 The classroom assistant said the two looked a lot alike and I said “Really? You think?” But then she said it was the eyes. 🙂

It was only about a 10-15 minute drive from the school. We parked while the busses unloaded so this was waiting for Owen.

My first morning program!

Parents and siblings are welcome at Owen’s school every Friday for the morning program (it’s for grades K-2 only). Today was the first time I’ve been able to go.

He was SUPER excited that we were going, and was thrilled to see us when his class walked in. There were about 10-14 parents there.

Katie didn’t do too badly, but kept inching closer to the kids. 🙂

They sang a patriotic song about the flag, learned a new dance, listened to a brief talk and watched a few role plays on RESPECT (this month’s topic), and handed out Respect awards for the last week.

We’ll definitely go again. 🙂

First rainy school day!

Luckily we all had raincoats because we apparently lost all our umbrellas (minus Katie’s from Grandma Marsha!) in the move. Katie was thrilled because she got a new (new) coat and new (used) boots to wear for the first time! She couldn’t quite get the hang of the umbrella so Owen held it.

Owen’s flower and numbers

This came home in Owen’s backpack today. I was trying to figure out the words (?) on the top (blop? brb?), but then he told me they’re NUMBERS. Well of course, then it was obvious. With an extra 9, a backwards 7, a missing 5, and an extra 2. 🙂

Me: 1, 0, 9—
Owen: NO! 10!
Me: Oh, yes, you’re right, 10!

🙂

A pretzel for Owen.

So Owen came home with his sandwich still in his lunchbox. I asked why he didn’t eat it and he said because he wasn’t hungry. Hmmmm. Odd. But okay, kids are kids, it might be possible.

Fast forward a bit and he says “GUESS WHAT I HAD AT LUNCH TODAY?” And proceeds to excitedly tell me he had a [soft] pretzel from the lunch line!

Wait. What?

Yes, the cafeteria has them available for purchase—and he’s talked about them before and how he wants one—but we hadn’t yet gone over his lunch account/account number with him so we had NO idea how he actually got the pretzel since there was no way to pay for it. And of course, asking him questions got us nowhere.

Us: Owen, how did you get the pretzel?
Owen: The lady behind the pretzels gave it to me.
Us: But how did you pay for it?
Owen: She just gave it to me.
Us: You were IN the cafeteria line?
Owen: Yes.
Us: Was everyone getting pretzels? (Thinking maybe it was some special school-wide thing.)
Owen: No.
Us: And no one asked you to pay for it?
Owen: No.

So I emailed the teacher asking if she had ANY idea what might have happened, as we were somewhat concerned he got a pretzel without paying for it (though we didn’t mind that he got a pretzel).

Then I attended the PTO meeting and asked the principal about it, telling her we did have a lunch account but hadn’t yet explained it/taught him about it yet. She said that for the first week or two, the kids can tell the lunch ladies their name and they will deduct it from their account. So I figured okay, that’s obviously what happened. Except Tom asked Owen if they asked his name and he said no. Hmmm. When I got home from the meeting, the teacher had emailed me back saying that right now they are giving the lunch ladies the lunch numbers, so Owen was probably not aware that they told the cafeteria worker his lunch number. Which I guess is good…but you’d think they’d LET THE PARENTS KNOW THAT.

We told Owen it was okay he got the pretzel and we’re glad he took the initiative to do it on his own, but he can’t just decide to do that whenever he wants because a) he doesn’t eat the lunch we packed and b) it costs money. He said he didn’t want any more pretzels, so we’ll see. 🙂

Welcome to the PTO!

So, in an effort to make some friends and be a part of Owen’s school, I went to the first PTO meeting tonight.

HOLY CRAP. On a few things.

  1. Wow, they do A LOT of stuff.
  2. There was so little involvement I thought it was pathetic…but what was sadder? They were THRILLED with the turnout! There were like 30 people there. Out of a school of about 600 students K-6. I assume this lack of participation was normal (and my online friends confirmed it), but I was still floored.
  3. I want to do a lot, but with Katie it’s hard—night time stuff I can’t do because she needs to be in bed and daytime stuff I don’t want to drag her along. They did tell me there would be some things she could come to (like setting up for book fairs) so I’ll try to help with what I can. (Most of the evening events are things we’d like Owen to attend, which means either Tom or I have to go with him…and the other will stay home with Katie. There maybe a select event where the whole family can we go but I won’t know until they happen…and then I’d want us all attending and not volunteering. But there may be things that we don’t care about attending at which point one of us can volunteer.

So, it will be an adventure! Stay tuned for stories!

I really miss knowing the details of Owen’s day.

So, how does Owen like school? He LOVES it!

Unfortunately, we don’t get a lot of details out of him that make sense to us. For example, today was something about letters and a coconut tree (and a song?) and stringing rubberbands on boards. We ask if it was art or math or what…he doesn’t know and doesn’t really add more info.

Me: Were you stringing rubberbands to make patterns?
Owen: If you pull them too far they will break.
Me: Right, but what exactly were you doing with the rubberbands?
Owen: [BIG SIGH] I told you we were stringing them.

Yeah, I want him to be independent but I miss being able to go in the classroom everyday and talk to the teacher like I did in pre-k and see what they’ve been working on.

Welcome to your new earworm.

What’s an earworm you ask? An earworm refers to any piece of music that is so catchy—and at the same time possibly so annoying—that it feels like a worm has crawled into your ear and eaten the intelligent parts of your brain so that you find yourself humming the song all day long and you can’t stop.

Fun, right?

Owen was doing some strange dance move tonight and when we asked what he was doing, he said TOOTY TA!

Huh? Come again?

A quick YouTube search and voilá—Tooty Ta—the exact moves he was doing. And after I heard it, I recognized it as having originally heard it in Owen’s pre-k class…where he first learned it.

Enjoy!

You’re welcome.

Again this year, some of his answers depended on what was in his line of sight or what he had recently played with—he doesn’t quite GET the meaning of the word “favorite” in all instances. I’m starting to rethink these questions. 🙂

  1. Favorite color: blue (same)
  2. Favorite pet: Charlie (same)
  3. Favorite food: pizza (was PB&J)
  4. Favorite ice cream: chocolate (same)
  5. Favorite fruit: strawberry (was apple)
  6. Best friend: Braxton (was Joselyne; I was wondering who he was going to say because he doesn’t really have any friends here yet)
  7. Favorite toy: Dusty (was cars; Dusty is the plane from Planes that was sitting next to him)
  8. Favorite Cars car: Frank the tractor (was Doc Hudson; Frank was on the floor next to him; he’s not really IN to Cars like he used to be)
  9. Favorite Super Hero: Batman (was Superman and Batman)
  10. Favorite TV show: Penguins of Madagascar (was Octonauts—no, Doc McStuffins)
  11. Favorite book: Star Wars Lego book (was Olivia; he first tried to tell me it was WHOOSH—a book we haven’t read in probably six months but was nearby thanks to Katie)
  12. Favorite movie: Lego Movie (was Planes—which I still find hilarious because he only saw it once at the theater—we haven’t watched it again since)
  13. What I want to be when I grow up: barbarian (was “race car man…race car guy…racing guy”—you can thank Tom and his iPad games for the barbarian!)

Going to get Owen from the bus stop!

Katie was super excited and was ready to go the second I put her shoes on. Tom made sure to be home in time to go with us. 🙂

Playing with the other kids.

We could finally see the bus…and she sat down to wait. 🙂

Finally!

Once we got home I tried to get the scoop. He was excited and more interested in watching the movie (which was paused). But he was happy so that’s all that matters!

Boo Hoo Breakfast

The breakfast was put on by the PTO for all of the kindergarten parents. And what a nightmare it was. It was scheduled for 9—which I understand because it’s at the beginning of school, and I guess they figured you’d likely be dropping off your kid in person so you’d already be there…? But trying to get there was awful, even though I drove straight there and was in the general vicinity at 8:50.

I was using the GPS because I’d only driven there once, and it took me to the back of the school where there is no parking (only Kiss-and-Ride and bus areas) and all the side streets were packed. I tried to reroute to the front of the school but the GPS wouldn’t do it and I couldn’t figure it out (it’s in a subdivision). I finally figured out how to get there, stupidly assuming that the small parking lot might actually have a space for people STAYING at the school instead of just dropping kids off. Ha. HA HA. There was literally NO parking space there or on any of the side streets for a half-mile radius. And it was already 85 and I was NOT walking that far with Katie and I was already late…so I said screw the breakfast. On the way out, I pulled over to calm down and think—if I waited just a bit longer, a lot of the parents would be done dropping their kids off and I’d hopefully be able to get a closer parking spot. So I waited until 9:15, turned around, and got a spot a block away.

The breakfast was…awkward. People were already at tables and chatting and there was nowhere for me to sit so I just stood there letting Katie play for a few minutes. It was also HOT in there—I asked if they didn’t have A/C and they said yes they did but in apparent Halley tradition the A/C was out the first day. 🙂 But they liked Katie’s school spirit—dressing in black and yellow! 🙂

Then I got us a snack and grabbed a seat and both other people were buried in their phones. Yay. 😐 I chatted for a brief minute with a mom from the pool but she was talking to friends. I hate these kinds of things but I had pushed myself outside of my comfort zone…and it was a bust. Lovely. So we listened to the welcome and the PTO president and I didn’t learn much. Katie was having a ball eating her apple and running back and forth to the stuffed animal area. Afterwards I talked to the PTO president about possibly volunteering a little and she was very nice. Then I saw Katie playing in another section so I went over to grab her and there were some other parents over there. I recognized one set as the parents of the twins in Owen’s class so I chatted with them briefly and they were very nice and we exchanged numbers.

It’s going to be an interesting year.

Owen’s first day of kindergarten!

First up? Baths. They didn’t take them after being in the pool yesterday so I figured we had enough time in the morning!

Katie picked the shark towel!

She got her toes painted again—this time to match mom!

They weren’t really focused this morning.

2014-09-02kids008

The best I got (though I didn’t take a ton because it looked like I got a good one). Oh well.

He opted not to get a haircut and said he’d let me put gel in instead!

His new minion back pack and lunch box!

Walking down the hill to the bus stop!

2014-09-02kids012

Waiting excitedly for the bus. We were the first people there but there were some kids across the street. A few minutes later kids just started appearing out of nowhere. We could see the stop ahead of ours and there were probably 20-30 kids there! At our stop there were about 6-8 (it was hard to count with all the parents there as well).

2014-09-02kids013

A mom that I met at the pool was there with her first grader and her 3yo (who is the same size as Katie—and they got along fabulously) and I had her take our picture. We talked about having play dates soon. 🙂

Kindergarteners get on first! The bus driver explains that in the afternoon you have to be there to pick them up AND ask for them by name before they can get off the bus.

Then Katie tried to get on the bus behind Owen. And started screaming and crying when she couldn’t: “OWEE! I MISS MY OWEE! I WANT TO GET ON SCHOOL BUS WITH OWEE!” Poor Katie bug.

We waved at him through the window, I could see him smiling, and then they were off! Katie was calming down as we walked back to the house with the other mom and daughter (I told them they could cut through our yard) but Katie lost it again when she realized they weren’t coming to our house: “I WANT TO GO WITH THEM!” Poor Katie bug.

Then it was in the car to head to the school for the Boo Hoo Breakfast!
