A Busy Day

First we had mom’s group from 10-noon and then we had physical therapy from 3-4. I never specifically woke the boy up, but he still didn’t nap as well as he normally does…so at the moment, I’m waiting for him to fall asleep (he was out within two minutes of leaving PT, but since I moved him to the pack-and-play when we got home, he woke up).

The mom’s group topic was sleep, and surprisingly, I didn’t have much to say or ask about…since Owen really is doing pretty well. The guest’s basic philosophy on everything was “If you like it and/or it works for you, go ahead and do it” — whether that means having them sleep in a car seat or having to take them on a car ride to get them to nap. While I agree with that to a certain extent, I draw a line at using anything really odd to get him to sleep. That said, he is apparently an easy baby since he goes down without a fight (most of the time).

It makes me feed bad (and good!) to hear what some of the other moms are going through sleep-wise…babies that can’t self-soothe at all or who have to be rocked to sleep before being put in the crib. Or babies who scream for an hour first or have to be walked around to calm down. Egads. I guess we have it easy. Most of them are still getting up at night, too, for at least one feeding—so I’m not alone. Of course, there is also a mom or two with a baby that sleeps from 7-7 or 10-8.

The hardest part of the group for me is seeing all the other babies rolling over or stretching themselves up on their arms or sitting up well on their own…since Owen is not quite there yet. Yeah yeah yeah I know all babies are different but it still stinks to see most of them ahead of him. A lot of the babies are also eating a lot of real food—like an entire baby jar at a time! They were surprised when I told them that Owen doesn’t really want anything to do with food—or that we just haven’t found the right food yet. He seems to want to eat (he opens his mouth when he sees the spoon) but he hasn’t liked any of his options yet. I happened to mention it to the physical therapist and she said by six months (which is next week!) he really should be eating some amount of solid foods…and said if he doesn’t start soon, she might recommend I talk to a specialist! Egads. Of course, I need to ask the pediatrician about it next week at his six-month appointment.

So, the physical therapy. She said he’s doing better. He rolls to one side much better than the other, so we have to keep working on that (he still doesn’t roll over on his own, except for a happy accident now and again). He has good neck and leg strength and his arm strength is getting better. We had thought today might be the last appointment for awhile, but after seeing him today, she said still wants to continue to see him. At least we have moved the appointment time to 3pm instead of 7am (although, honestly, I might like the 7am better because it’s MUCH quieter and cooler in there).

What missing two naps did…

So, he finally fell asleep for his nap about 6pm. I had put him in his crib, thinking maybe there were just too many distractions downstairs (it wasn’t any different from any other day when he naps downstairs, but you never know).

Turns out it was LUCKY I put him in his crib…because he didn’t just nap for a few hours like we thought he would. Noooo, he slept straight through until…4am! 10 HOURS! Holy wah! Tom and I had stayed up until about 10, hoping that he would wake up so he could wear his helmet again for a bit…but alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

At 4 after I fed him (after he sucked down his 6oz bottle in a matter of minutes), he was NOT his normal tired self. Crap. But I guess it should have been expected since he had just slept 10 hours! But he needed to go back to bed—he can’t start learning that the day starts that early!! So I turned on his mobile and left. I watched him for a few minutes on the monitor, and he was just chatting with himself and making not-tired noises and moving around. I turned off the monitor and shut our bedroom door so I didn’t hear anything…and I was able to fall back asleep. I checked around 6am when Tom was up and getting ready for work, and Owen was out. So, I’m not sure when he finally fell back to sleep, but he did.

Tom got him up around 6:30 and put his helmet on (by himself!) so by the time I got downstairs at 6:45 Owen was watching Sesame Street and jumping like normal. He still looks cute in the helmet, but he also looks so pathetic… Poor kid. I think it’s still cut too low above his eyes (they trimmed it some, but I think they can do more) because it looks like it covers his eyes and I constantly want to adjust it so he can see better. We’ll see what they say at our next appointment.

Owen has a helmet!

Just to be on the safe side, I called in the morning to MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE they 1) had the helmet and 2) it was the right one. They couldn’t check it at that exact moment (from the gist of the conversation, it seems only the specialist can open the box?). But I was assured it would be double-checked as soon as he was free, and we would get a call if there was a problem. We didn’t get a call, so it was off to Livonia to try on the helmet and get it fitted! Tom was able to go, so I was happy about that.

Our “substitute” specialist was nice, but it will be good to see our regular guy again (I am sure they are both equally qualified, but the guy we saw today made sure we know they do things a little differently from one another).

So without further ado…here’s Owen the first time he tried the helmet on:

Making the marks of where to cut it out for his ears and around his face:

The burp cloth is there because he just ate, hadn’t burped, and we wanted to be prepared. Oh, and still making marks and checking the fit:

Just one of those cute baby faces we didn’t know we got until we looked at the pics afterward. It just makes me laugh…because he really wasn’t uncomfortable or upset or anything:

TA DA!

On the way home…since it was past nap time, he was out in a few minutes. But isn’t he cute?

He only had the helmet on for 45 minutes (it takes 5 days to work up to the 23 hours a day thing) and look how sweaty his head is! I can’t FATHOM what it will be after 23 hours! Hoo boy. And they said after a while, there’s no real way to clean it. Lordy.

So, the first day he has to wear it one hour, then off an hour, then on an hour, etc., and no naps or nighttime. The next day, it’s two hours on/one hour off with no naps or nighttime. The third day it’s four hours on/one hour off but then including naps and nighttime. Day four is eight hours on/one hour off plus naps and nighttime. And then day 5 we jump to wearing it 23 hours. We only get to take it off for an hour to bathe him and let the helmet air out. (Although, he did say we could take it off for like 15 minutes here and there throughout the day to dry his head and let it air out IF he’s truly a big sweater. We assured him he IS. I really don’t think they believe us. Oh, and there are holes in the back of the helmet, but it’s not for air flow—it’s so they can look in and check how his head is fitting. They guy assured us that more holes did NOT help with air flow.)

I think this helmet it going to be WAY STINKY in a month or so, considering how much the boy sweats. I mean, seriously. His head sweats just laying on your arm for a 15 minute feeding! And his hair was soaked from just the 45 minutes he wore it on the way home! It can be cleaned, but not REALLY cleaned—they say you can wipe it out with rubbing alcohol or try to get rid of any smells with nail polish remover. You aren’t supposed to put powder in it and you can’t use Febreeze or anything chemical because it’s touching his head and could cause an allergic reaction.

It’s also going to be a challenge for the next few days—as it’s nearly impossible for one person to manage the helmet alone. It takes two hands to open it/put it on…so it really is necessary to have someone hold the boy while the other person puts it on. If he would sit on his own (which he can almost do, but not well enough to sit STILL for helmet placement) it would be doable. At least it’s the weekend and Tom will be around for the most part, and by next week maybe I will have mastered the art of baby wrangling with my legs so I can put the helmet on alone.

The worst part of the day was that he missed his 1pm and 3pm naps—he had about a 30 minute catnap on the way there and back, but anything less than an hour doesn’t count as a NAP (according to my sleep expert book!)…so he’s extremely cranky at the moment not wanting to sleep but desperately needing to.

Wait.

The mobile has stopped and I only hear ever-so-faint whimpering and heavy breathing. I think he’s finally out. Phew.

Oh crap.

He sneezed and woke himself up. Now he’s fussy and screeching again. DAMMIT.

Anyhoo…I still can’t fathom him having to wear this for the next X number of months. We asked when he will have to be rescanned (to see how much his head has changed shape) and we were told maybe at eight weeks or maybe not until 16 weeks since we should be able to tell just by looking at him. Eight weeks? 16 weeks? Logically I know it’s going to be that long—but actually hearing it out loud was another story. SIXTEEN WEEKS….FOUR MONTHS. That’s a long time. 🙁

That said, they said we might be able to see some changes within 2-3 weeks, so I’m really looking forward to that and hoping we do…just so I can SEE it working.

We do, however, have to go back for bi-weekly checkups. Except for the first one, which they like to schedule for one week. Unfortunately our guy still won’t be back from vacation, so that means we either get a SECOND new guy if we don’t want to drive to Livonia—or we get to see the same guy we saw today, but we have to drive the distance to Livonia. GRRRR.

P.S. It’s now 5:21 and someone STILL isn’t asleep. And he’s been fed AND changed. Hoo boy. He needs to sleep so we can get the helmet on him again for a bit tonight before he has to go to bed!

Helmet Appointment

Today was the day Owen was supposed to get his helmet. Yes, SUPPOSED to get his helmet.

We were fit into the schedule for today because our specialist was going on vacation for 1.5 weeks. Luckily we only had to drive about 15 minutes, as the appointment was in Southfield (versus Livonia, where we had to go for the laser scan). I picked up Tom, and off we went.

As we were waiting in the exam room, we heard our guy (the specialist) say to his assistant, “It should still be in the box. It’s probably not even opened yet.” And we didn’t think anything of it.

Fast forward a few minutes when he comes into the room to apologize—seems they sent the helmet in the wrong color/pattern. We were supposed to get a light blue helmet but instead got this:

Yes, a PINK helmet with BUTTERFLIES! 88| >:XX

They are rushing the second one and it should be here Friday. (So, hmmmm, it took 1.5 weeks for the first helmet, but after a mistake it only takes 2.5 days?) But now, since our guy will be on vacation, we have to drive to Livonia. Ugh. And Tom might not be able to go. Double ugh. >:XX

Yes, mistakes happen. And they apologized over and over and over. But it’s still annoying. And we could have avoided even GOING today had they actually OPENED the box when they got it and saw it was the wrong one.

Sigh.

Tricare gets a thumbs down from me today.

Long story short, the helmet is NOT covered like we thought it would be. Apparently the physical therapy appointments are but not the actual orthotic device that will help the most. 🙄

After doing some research, A LOT of military families are dealing with this, and have filed appeals. Some get it covered, some don’t. Lovely. What a pain in the ass.

But I guess that’s what savings accounts are for, right?

I was excited…

I was pretty exited last night when Owen ate an entire 8oz bottle before going to bed. He hasn’t done that in AGES, so I was sure he would have a good night’s sleep (read: he would sleep THROUGH the night—skipping his 2am feeding—and I would get a good night’s sleep for once).

Ha.

HA HA.

He was up at—are you ready?—MIDNIGHT. Mid-freaking-night.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! 88|

Every night I tell myself if this happens I will just LET him be noisy for as long as it takes to see if he will just put himself back to sleep…and every night I just end up getting up to feed him because the noise will be over quicker and I can get back to sleep quicker. Besides, I was sure he couldn’t be hungry, so I gave him his pacifier and turned on his mobile and went back to my room.

So, you guessed it. I was up within 20 minutes because he wasn’t quieting down—and was actually getting louder.

Then he was out and slept soundly until 6am when he started to stir—and I had to wake him up to feed him so we could get to his 7am PT appointment (who knows how long he might have slept/laid there quietly had I not had to get him up). Of course, I was up WAY before my 5:30 alarm. XX(

This sleep thing has got to change.

He’s killing me! No matter what time he goes down, he’s up around 2.

Usually he’s asleep by 7:30 or 8—and up at 2. Last night he didn’t fall asleep until after 9—and was still up at 2.

Then, he used to sleep a second round—until 6:30 or so. Now, it’s until maybe 5. XX(

This morning I went in at 5 and gave him his pacifier and turned on the mobile…and then tried to get back to sleep myself. I was up again at 6 because—surprise!—he was up again.

So I fed him—and he didn’t even finish the four ounces! So my guess is that he wasn’t really hungry but didn’t want to sleep anymore…but he went back to sleep fairly quickly—so he must have still been tired, right? I kept my fingers crossed that maybe he would sleep until 9 or something.

Ha.

HA HA.

He was up at 7:15. Sigh.

I’m sooooo tired.

I thought things were supposed to get better as he got older?

About last night…

So about 10:30 he finally went down with his pacifier and burp cloth—without a screaming fit. And he slept straight through until about 4am. That is fewer hours than he usually sleeps (during the first stretch) on a good night, but he took his bottle and went down again—then woke up his normal happy self…completely sideways and kicking like mad at his Ocean Wonders Aquarium.

And the biggest surprise of all? When he got up here was no poop. Egads.

And he managed to go through two outfits in a matter of 20 minutes. Egads.

Prune juice!

Well, Owen just got his first prune juice.

We’re not entirely sure he needed it, but we just experienced something new with him…so we figured it was worth a shot. He’d been sleeping for almost an hour when he woke up and started crying and screaming. He didn’t stop, so each of us took turns trying to comfort him and he was okay while we were holding him, but he DID NOT WANT to be put down.

He hasn’t pooped in two days—which is not out of the norm—but we figured we might as well try prune juice (since we had some). We’ve heard horror stories of post-prune juice poops, so I’m not looking forward to tonight if it works like I’ve heard. 88|

That said, he wasn’t too sure about the water/juice mix at first (his first juice ever!), but he sucked down 2oz in no time flat! We tried more, but he was done.

We could tell he was tired (lots of yawns and eye-rubbing) so maybe all this will lead to a full night’s sleep (vs. the last two nights where I’ve been up TWICE with him, instead of just once).

Stay tuned.

— Time lapse. —

So about 10 minutes after I finished writing, Owen’s eyelids drooped so Tom took him back up to bed. And AS SOON AS Tom laid him down, the crying started again.

Hoo boy.

Poor boy.

Poor us if he doesn’t go back to sleep. 🙁

Dead mobile = shopping with mom!

I was on the hunt for a new mobile. For some unknown reason, the mobile we had downstairs on the pack-and-play (that Grandpa Mike and Grandma Linda bought) just died. I was in the middle of using it yesterday (during the mom’s group meeting) and the windup knob suddenly lost all tension so there was no music or rotation. Hoo boy.

So Tom and I went to find a new mobile after work. Since it was kinda late we just went to the local Babies ‘R’ Us. Well, they didn’t have much at all. We ended up with an electronic (i.e. needs batteries) mobile, with the thought that although it was more expensive AND would eat batteries…at least we wouldn’t have to get up and wind it every five minutes. Plus the new one had a remote! WOOHOO! That said, it turned out to be WAY too busy of a mobile and I think it actually kept him awake! (FYI: it was the Tiny Love Sweet Island Dreams Mobile.)

So today I decided to hit the other bigger/nicer baby stores in Utica to look for a mobile that actually played the same song (Brahms’ Lullaby, pretty common with windup mobiles) and found one on clearance for $20. My plan was to just use the windup part (which plays the music) and attach it to the old mobile—so I didn’t want to spend $40 for a new one. So imagine my surprise as I kept shopping and found…the exact mobile! On clearance! :>> Apparently the company has disappeared—which would explain why I hadn’t been able to find any information about it online last night! For reference, it’s a Doodlebugs Musical Mobile by Dolly:

The product lists the website as www.dolly.com but it’s definitely NOT a baby website anymore. (It’s not an unsafe site, in case you were wondering. It’s about hand trucks and carts.)

So this was Owen while we were wandering about Babies ‘R’ Us…

And now I’m trying to get him to nap—with the new mobile—and he doesn’t seem to want to nap. Even though I know he’s tired since he has only napped for about an hour total so far today. Stinker.

Different hours, please.

The hours Owen keeps are driving me insane.

Sure, he sleeps anywhere from 6-8 hours at a time on most nights—but the problem is that they start early and end early and still require me to get up to feed him once around 2am-4am.

Last night he napped much later than usual (from about 6-8:30) so he didn’t get his last bottle until about 9 and then didn’t go to bed (fall asleep) until about 9:30. So, we thought, maybe—JUST MAYBE—he will sleep later…or skip his early-morning feeding.

Ha.

HAHA.

Yeah, he was up at 4. He was back down by 4:20, but was up squawking and talking and cooing COMPLETELY WIDE AWAKE.

Of course, this is the time of day when I hate Tom the most, LOL (and I told him that, so it’s not a secret). His alarm goes of about 4:30, and he usually takes care of the boy in the morning so I can get a little more sleep. But does he get up when his alarm goes off? Noooooooo. Because at that moment, the boy is quiet, so Tom falls back asleep. But 15 seconds later Owen is noisy again, so of course I hear him and it keeps me up…and Tom is snoring away. 😐

After listening to Owen for about 30 minutes, hoping he will fall asleep again (so I can, too!) and realizing he’s NOT going to (so I can’t), I finally roll out of bed again and suddenly Tom pops up and says “Don’t worry, I’ll get him.”

Sorry, babe—too late. Where were you 30-45 minutes ago? |-|

So, going to better later does NOTHING to help the schedule. It’s almost better when he goes to bed WAY earlier—he seems to sleep a little longer (even though I am up at 2:30 or so to feed him) but then he falls back asleep for another hour or two—which means I get more sleep as well.

I can’t wait for this sleep thing to get better. Sure, I’m not up every hour or two all night anymore, but it still wears on me. And since I am not quite as exhausted in the middle of the night, it means I can’t fall back to sleep as quickly as I once could…which means I am usually up for at least an hour or more when I DO get up with him.

Sigh.

What I woke up to…

So it was a pretty good night…Owen went to bed about 8 (I think it was) and slept until 4:30!! (If only I had gone to bed at 8!) So I put him back down after his bottle and he fell asleep again…and I tossed and turned (and listened to Tom’s alarm off and on for an hour) but then I think I finally fell asleep for a bit…but guess what I woke up to about 6:30??

Tom came in the room and said “Have you seen your boy? Turn on the monitor!” So I did, and…he was on his stomach!! Up on his arms and everything! YAY! Of course we don’t know how long he was like that—he really dislikes being on his stomach, and usually only lasts 2-3 minutes before getting REALLY cranky (grandpa made him stay longer one day and Owen actually made himself sick and spit up all over).

We got him up and he was his normal sweet and happy and smiley morning self. He jumped in his jumparoo for a bit, then I fed him, then we watched some TV, then I gave him more belly time—and he actually seemed to enjoy it! Long enough for me to get some cute pics, even! Here is the best one:

Happy Father’s Day!

We started the day by trying out the Bumbo seat—and he barely fits in it! (Well, he fits fine—I’m sure it’s supposed to be a little form-fitting. But his little chunky legs are somewhat wedged in there.)

Anyway, we should have been using it WAAAAY before now, but we were waiting because we thought he was supposed to be able to hold his head up on his own (when sitting upright) before using it—but he did just fine.

We also tried more oatmeal (cereal) while he was in the chair…and he actually ate it! We probably got about a teaspoon total before he got cranky! He didn’t really like it going in (we got the screwed up WHAT DID YOU JUST PUT IN MY MOUTH? face, but it stayed in and he let us do tiny spoonful after tiny spoonful!). YAY! :>>

And then it was time for a cute new outfit. And guess what size it is? JUST GUESS. No, it’s a 9-month size! NINE MONTHS! And it’s just about too small!! He’s not even five months old yet!!

Then we had some mommy time:

And finally some daddy time!!

Not yet…

He hasn’t slept through the night again…yet. |-| But he does seem to be sleeping well enough…the first night after his 10-hour stretch I only got up once. And then last night he went to bed at about 7:30 without a last bottle—and slept until 3:30. ❗ And after his middle-of-the-night bottle, he seems to be sleeping better (i.e. longer).

We’re keeping our fingers crossed. 🙂

Once more, please!

So last night was a dream. For real.

Owen had his last bottle and was sleeping by 8pm. And want to take a guess as to when he woke up?

Anyone?

A guess?

5:45!! 88|

As in…almost 10 straight hours!!

I know, I know—I couldn’t believe it myself! That said, I was up twice (about 11:30pm to roll over and then at 3:30am to pee—and to check the monitor to make sure aliens hadn’t abducted my boy from his crib!) but was able to “sleep in” until almost 6! Heaven!

Except.

In the middle of the night I came down with a sore throat… Yuck. The last thing I need is to get sick—but I think it’s coming.

So, I’m hoping we can recreate today whatever happened yesterday to have him sleep another 10 hours (but of course he probably won’t, because now I am sick and NEED the sleep)…

Zo-Li On-The-Go Travel Formula & Snack Dispenser

I had been debating between the Zo-Li On-The-Go Travel Formula & Snack Dispenser and the Innobaby Packin’ SMART Formula Dispenser and Snack Case, and ended up getting the Zo-Li because it was the first one to be available (at the time) with Amazon Prime.

To be honest, I loved the idea and was so jazzed with the item that I paid NO attention to the size of the container. I just assumed (wrongly, it turns out) that it was a tall and skinny container. I know the containers I currently use for formula (the smaller of the Powdered Formula Dispenser Combo Pack) and was expecting it to be about that size (well, except taller!). So you can imagine my surprise when I opened the box and saw just how big the Zo-Li was!! It’s HUGE—3″ wide and 8″ tall!! See for yourself!

I don’t remember seeing the dimensions listed in the product information section…but honestly, even if they were, I didn’t pay attention because I was just so enamored with this container! As far as it taking up less room than say, the more common Philips Avent Formula Dispenser/Snack Cup…well, overall it doesn’t because it’s a bigger container, LOL, but it’s a more consistent shape which makes it seem like it takes up less space. But it’s not NEARLY the space savings I had anticipated. It’s smaller in diameter but about 2.5 times the height!

That said, even with the size, this thing is great. It says it can hold formula for an 8oz bottle, but you could probably squeak 10oz in there if you had to. The actual formula dispenser piece just fits on the top-most container (so, if you had formula in other layers, you would just need to rotate layers so the formula was on the top). It would also make a great toy (once empty) since the layers can be mixed and matched in any order.

As far as construction…the pieces unscrew VERY easily (it’s only about 1/8 of a turn, which worried me—but I tried to pull them apart and they stayed tightly together) and they screw together fairly easily (to be honest, about half the time, I have to unscrew a layer to try and re-thread it correctly). The plastic is very heavy-duty in both appearance and feel. The formula dispenser portion works nicely, but as with any other dispenser, you do have to tap it a few times to get everything out (but since it is angled, everything easily does come out).

I do wish it came in a choice of colors (or all clear)–which is one thing I liked about the Innobaby.

Overall, I would highly recommend this item!

What a stinker!

So the past two nights we’ve tried putting Owen to bed about a half hour earlier, and if you’ve been reading along, you know it hasn’t been going well/helping any. So tonight we decided to just go back to what we have been doing—which is to say, putting him to bed around 8 or so (or whatever time it was when he seemed hungry and tired).

So what happened?

The little shit—while we weren’t looking and were out of the room for about two minutes—fell asleep in his jumpy chair! At about 7:15! |-|

Of course, Tom was still in the nursery installing room-darkening curtains and making noise, so I walked around with a sleepy-then-sleeping Owen in my arms. When I layed him in the crib at 7:45 he was OUT. Didn’t even move a muscle.

Fine, I thought. We’re following his schedule now so maybe the night will go well. Except, I thought, he only ate like 3oz before he fell asleep…

And we were up at 12:30. And again at 5.

Hoo boy.

Another sleep-deprived night.

This is getting old—fast. It’s amazing how quickly you get used to something…and let me tell you, I was VERY used to him sleeping 6-7 hours at a stretch. 😐

We tried the earlier-to-bed thing again last night…but again, it was only maybe 30 minutes earlier than normal. And he only slept until 12:30 (so maybe three hours for me), at which time he snarfed 6oz of formula. Then he was up at 5am, but he didn’t really want to eat (maybe 2oz) so I just put him back in the crib and put the mobile on…then listened to his jibber jabber for an hour or so. One or both of us must have fallen asleep for a bit, because I woke up at about 6:45 to him jabbering again.

I am thinking now, when he’s kinda sick, was not the best time to try the earlier-to-bed routine. Because we don’t know if his schedule disruption is due to a) being sick or b) the new routine. So I think we’ll go back to normal tonight and try again after he’s healthy.
