Owen: 1 – Mommy: 0

I do not want the Terrible Twos. DO NOT WANT. I really don’t have the patience…as today proved.

He has been good so far…but today, I took him to get his hair cut (which is never really FUN, but even with the crying and snotty nose it’s usually not THAT big of a deal) and he started crying and screeching before I could even get his coat off.

The sucker didn’t help.
He didn’t want to play in the water.
He didn’t want to watch Word World (which ALWAYS works).
He didn’t want to play with the comb.
He didn’t want to sit on my lap.
And you can’t hold him down.

Needless to say we left without him getting so much as his hair combed.

Owen: 1
Mommy: 0

I laughed it off at the salon, but I really just wanted to scream at him (which I know wouldn’t do any good, it was just my first reaction). And I never did scream at him but I did tell him sternly that mommy was NOT happy. I’m sure it didn’t register but I felt a little better.

I know in the grand scheme of things a haircut is not a big deal but its just so damn frustrating. And I know it’s only the beginning.

๐Ÿ™

Oh noooooo!!!!

GUESS WHO CLIMBED OUT OF HIS PACK AND PLAY THIS MORNING?!?! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I heard him making noises (through the wall—I’m in the bedroom next to his) but then it was quiet again so I thought I’d just let him lay there. He’s always been pretty good about laying quietly once he gets up, so I didn’t bother to turn the video monitor on. But then I heard him chattering again so I went in there.ย

And imagine my total shock and surprise to see him standing at the end of the bed, as if he just slid off (the PnP is between the bed and the closet door with barely any space on the sides…so my guess is that he somehow got out onto the bed and didn’t just go over the end of the PnP).ย

Oh. My.ย

He hasn’t ever tried to escape before, so I think he was just trying to get his B (blanket) which he had chucked over the edge. At least I hope that’s all it was, because I am not prepared to deal with this right now (away from home).

Hoo boy.ย

Splash park (again) and Owen’s first time in the ocean

Owenโ€™s first experience with the ocean…he liked playing in the shallow water of the surf, but did NOT like the water rushing up to him (so look to see him running away from the surf).

Running away from the surf!

One of my favorite pictures of the day:

And then some fun at the community condo pool (where it was a bit chilly, so this is as much playing as we did):

First hives!

Owen just woke up from his nap with major hives on his legs. :??:

There has been NOTHING unusual ingested (no new foods) or applied topically (same lotion as always) this morning…so it’s freaking me the hell out. Google says as long as his face isn’t swelling (cutting off the airway) to just treat with Benadryl to lessen itching (though he doesn’t seem to be itchy or uncomfortable in any way) and if they last longer than a week, then contact the pediatrician.

And of course, with all the kid meds I have in the house, I don’t have Benadryl…though I do have Benadryl spray that we had for Maggie. ๐Ÿ™‚

Stay tuned.

Two hours later…

Well, honestly, we could have handled that batter. Geez, you’d think two college-educated adults could figure out dosage information—WITH THE USE OF THE INTERNET—in under 10 minutes. ๐Ÿ˜ (The box says not to give it to kids under 2 and to ask the doc for dosage for ages 2-5…but the internet [and our doc] doses by weight…so I was going by that. Then we couldn’t find a quick and easy conversion from mg to ml so I found a weight dosage chart, but then Tom misunderstood and was going to give him a very small dose…we FINALLY got it figured out after much arguing and researching.)

That said, I completely forgot we had a ziploc of meds somewhere. I found the boxes (kept for dosing info) so thought that was all we had so didn’t even look. So I went to Rite Aid, got the Benedryl, came home, and then tried to find our droppers because he can’t take it from a cup. Yeah, they were in the ziploc with the other meds. Where the Benedryl (well, Waldryl) was. So we had it the whole time and I didn’t need to run to the store and Tom didn’t need to come home. (Well, he didn’t NEED to come home, though it made it easier for me to run to the store…and he wanted to come home to see the hives.)

And to top it all off, by the time we figured out the dosing and gave it to him, the hives were pretty much going away so we could have likely skipped the meds entirely. ๐Ÿ˜

I have a headache.

Kissing!

So pretty much every morning for the past 6-8 months, when I get Owen up in the morning or after a nap, I give him kisses and say something like “Mommy’s kissing Owen!” or “Kisses for Owen!”

Today he was carrying around a stuffed animal and I asked if he could kiss it…and he did! I thought it might be a fluke since I tried it a few more times (and with me) and he didn’t do it. So when Tom came home we tried again. And BINGO! Owen kissed Tom—twice! The first one I missed with the camera, and the second one I got!

Owen giving Tom a kiss!

Then later, I came up to him on the couch and told him to “give mommy a kiss” and he leaned forward and smacked me on the lips!

:p

First fall down the stairs

Oh. My. Gawd.

I just had complete heart failure.

I left the gate open and Owen headed upstairs, which is actually fine because he can go up with ease. But I didn’t want him up there, so I caught him about 3/4 the way up and took his hand to lead him down. He knows how to come down by himself and has done it a few times, though I usually still hold his hand (or stand in front of him to watch him and/or catch him if he should fall).

But today I decided to let the dog out (in her crate in the room at the top of the stairs, which I can reach from the stairs) and in the three seconds it took me to finish the last 1/4 of the stairs and unlatch her gate, he fell. I watched him slide down, head over heels, about three steps. It all happened in s…l…o…w motion, I swear. But it happened so fast I couldn’t even get to him to stop him. I just kept watching him slide…and tumble…

It’s a curved stairwell with a big wood platform about halfway down, and he bonked into that as well, before sliding down another few stairs.

He was in shock, I think. Mostly like “What the hell was that?” Then he started crying…but it wasn’t a horrible cry (as we heard before when a 4×4 dropped on his toe) so I didn’t think it was too bad. Within a minute (or less) of me cuddling him on the steps (making sure he wasn’t bleeding anywhere), he was off down the rest of the stairs, apparently no worse for the wear. He grabbed a burpie from the couch and was off to the living room. It was a good 10 minutes before my heart stopped racing and I calmed down.

I guess he’s not quite ready to go the stairs alone.

Stairway success!

Owen’s comprehension level has been growing lately—for the past month or so, if you ask if he wants to go outside, he runs to the gate (or the sliding door if the gate is open) and once outside, if you ask if he wants to go inside, he goes straight to the door. He also knows when he gets shoes on, we’re most likely going into the garage—and sometimes he’ll even wait outside the car door.

More recently (like within the past week or so), at naptime or bedtime, when you say it’s time for nap/bed, he will go to the gate/stairs, go up the stairs, then go to his room and wait for you to put him in the crib! What a good little boy!

So this morning, Tom brought him into our room for some cuddle TV time and when it was time to go downstairs, I told Owen, and he went directly to the stairs…then proceeded to go down all by himself! What a big boy!

Sorry about the bad video quality—I wasn’t prepared so didn’t have the lights on, then turned them on, then turned on the phone’s flash…but you’ll get the idea. ๐Ÿ™‚

A few new foods!

Owen liked the bulgogi we made for dinner last night. The kid won’t eat hot dogs but he’ll eat marinated barbecued beef. :??: I guess I should be happy, because bulgogi is closer to sushi than hot dogs are…but hot dogs are just a bit more common and easier to make for his lunches.

And tonight we had baked chicken for dinner—which he wouldn’t touch, of course—but he ate the hearts that I quick pan fried. Really? What toddler will eat chicken hearts but not the actual chicken?

What a strange bird.

Crayons!

So we gave Owen these crayons the other day and he just LOVED them. He didn’t actually color with them—but had A TOTAL BLAST just stacking them and unstacking them and stacking them…over and over and over. He kept himself busy for at least 20 minutes while Tom and I ate dinner!

So we got them out again this morning while Gramma Jean was sewing something for me and I was eating breakfast. Then Gramma Jean started this new game…and then he actually started coloring! (The video is a bit long, but I just didn’t feel like editing it today.)

Another leak!

So what happens this morning? Not the night diaper, but after breakfast, he was wet again. WHAT THE—?? I didn’t think he was close to needing the next size because the 5s are really still fitting okay (and this diaper wasn’t really that wet, either, so it wasn’t like a major overflow) but I don’t know what else it could be? I’ve been very careful how I put them on since he did have the leaking issue yesterday.

So after I changed him, I just left him with no bottoms since it was warm in the house and almost nap time. I went to get his milk and by the time I got back (30 seconds?) I saw a diaper on the floor and a naked butt on the couch! The stinker had taken his diaper off! For the first time! Needless to say I put bottoms back on him!

First major leak!

Today was the first time EVER Owen soaked through his diaper when we were out and about. We had gone to two stores and were taking him out of the second cart when I noticed the seat was damp—then looked at him and his pants were SOAKED! 88|

Good thing my mom was with me and able to help change him/his clothes at the car—and thank heavens for having that box of goodies [clothes, wipes, etc.] in the car. I just chalked it up to a bizarre occurrence and us probably needing to change his diaper before we left.

But then after we got home (after one more store) I noticed (as he was walking into the house) that his butt was wet AGAIN! :??: I mean, I know he drinks a lot, but he has never leaked like that before. EVER. And the second diaper wasn’t really even that wet—and it looked to be on okay. So who knows…

First soccer ball!

Owen loves balls—we all know that. And he always seems to want balls that aren’t his, even though he has a ton of his own. Just this afternoon, he saw a soccer ball in our neighbor’s yard and made a beeline for it. She let us borrow it for awhile. Last week, he was immediately attracted to some lady’s volleyball at the park (and when we went back the next day, went right to where she HAD been sitting to look for it again).

So when I was in Target, I got him his own soccer ball. And we decided to give it to him as he was waking up from his nap. Watch, and enjoy!

First Crayon Drawing

We were up in Grayling for the weekend to visit with Filipek’s, and I was sitting doing something with Izzy when she suggested she get a piece of paper for Owen to write on. Well, he was using a pencil, and kept poking through the paper, so I suggested a crayon instead. She ran to her bookbag and brought back a turquoise crayon. I held the paper and let him go to town…

(Gramma says it’s a nice picture of snow-capped mountains behind a lake!) Then Izzy wanted to write on the back. ๐Ÿ™‚

A little while later, while we were all still eating dinner and Owen was left to his own devices (having already finished eating), we suddenly heard Marcus saying “NO, OWEN!” Yeah, he had just drawn his first crayon WALL art. |-|

Owen's first wall art

Thank heavens for Magic erasers!

Three firsts today!

1) We took him to the Grayling fish hatchery with Gramma Jean and Grandpa David. He was still a bit too young—maybe next year will be better!

2) Tom took him wading in the AuSable River—we were impressed that he didn’t mind the chilly water…although the current intrigued him.

3) Grauntie Marge brought over a watercolor paint book!

First minor injuryโ€”poor toe!

Owen got his first minor injury tonight.

Tom said (I wasn’t there so I didn’t witness it) a piece of 4×4 wood fell on his toe. :'( There was some crying and bleeding as we tried to deal with it—but really not too bad overall. He wouldn’t let us get near him with any type of ice pack but Tom did manage to get a band-aid on him. Then he sat with grandpa and watched Sesame Street and things were okay (until we had to put a new band-aid on).

I’m okay (LOL) and he’s pretty okay, except for when we need to touch the foot. And he’ll likely lose the nail since it’s completely black and blue.

Poor kid.

First dead toy.

So a bunch of friends really recommended the LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Alphabet…so of course we got it. As soon as Owen noticed it, he took right to it—unfortunately, taking every letter off the door and putting it on the floor.

Now, while it was certainly cute to watch, he started taking the pieces around the house, and I could easily see him losing all the pieces and making me insane. Instead of one toy to play with, it was really 27 pieces! To lose! FUN!

So I decided for my own sanity, I would put the letters away until he was a bit older. The base still had a button to press which played the ABC song, and he liked that.

Fast forward to Grandpa Mike and Grandma Linda visiting. With Sassea and her water bowl. Which Owen LOVES to sneak into and play in.

Well, let’s just say the LeapFrog Alphabet is no more. Owen was playing with the base and in a flash, had taken it off the fridge, scurried into the dining room, and dunked it in the water bowl!

We immediately dried it out and placed it in a bowl of rice in a warm oven…and left it sit overnight…but no luck. Well, it did turn on and play one round of the ABC song but then it was dead.

I guess when we buy it again, he’ll have two sets of letters. ๐Ÿ˜

Water table!

A bunch of our friends had said WONDERFUL things about an outdoor water table, so of course we had to get one. And of course, with as much as Owen now loves splashing in the water, we knew it would be a hit!

He was in it before I even had started putting it together:

Water table inside

Once it was outside, he instantly started splashing in it…and it was right next to his little pool, so he enjoyed splashing in both at the same time:

Owen and the Pizza Crust

We know he likes pizza, and we often give him bites of crust or crust and cheese. We’ve tried giving him larger pieces of things (like half a granola bar) and he doesn’t want it and just smashes it instead.

But today, after eating a handful of pieces, he was looking longingly at my crust…so instead of giving it to Maggie, I gave it to him. Watch as it quickly disappears!

P.S. He did end up eating the piece he spit out. ๐Ÿ˜€
