Thanksgiving Up North

Since Tom had the entire long weekend off, we decided to go to Traverse City to stay with dad and Linda—it would be the first time we had been there in years. They also invited everyone (mom & David, Marge, and Marsha & Rob) for Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday!

The trip up didn’t go quite as planned. Owen was a pretty good trooper on the ride—it was his nap time when we left, so we hoped he’d sleep at least two hours…but 30 minutes was all we got, and then he was hungry shortly thereafter, so we stopped in Midland to eat dinner and feed him. That added about 45 minutes to our trip. Then we discovered US 131 was closed and the resulting back roads detour took us a good half hour out of our way. GRRRR. (Apparently everyone knew about this but either forgot to mention it or thought we were going another direction.) |-| But Owen did sleep the whole way after dinner, and made the transition form the car to his crib nicely (he did wake up, but fell back to sleep easily). I was happy about that because that was what I had been most worried about, as I hate to do anything that might mess up his great sleep schedule.

The family dinner went well. Linda had said that everyone was welcome after 1, and mom was pulling in at 1:03 and Marsha was pulling in at 1:07. :>> Mom was actually three minutes later than I expected her. Hee. Owen was freshly bathed and in a new (from cousin Nick) outfit and was just such a dashing little gentleman (aka cutie pie):

Grandma Linda and the dashing Owen

We had lots of yummy hors d’Ε“uvres, everyone brought goodies to add to the meal, I did the mashed potatoes, then watched and helped my mom make the gravy (I figure if I watch it enough times, I might be able to do it on my own one of these days ). I also really enjoyed a few glasses of wine. :p Everything was delicious, and Owen even had Thanksgiving fare—albeit the baby food versions. We did give him a bunch of tiny bites to try, though, including turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, squash, and rolls—which he ate, but didn’t really enjoy (he still has texture and thickness issues).

And then. Unfortunately. At the exact moment we gave him some pistachio fluff to try, he barfed up his entire meal. I guess the fluff broke the camel’s back, so-to-speak, and his little stomach/gag reflex said ENOUGH! Thankfully it all landed on him, his bib, and the high chair, and none hit the table or the carpet. Poor Owen. But he was no worse for the wear and we all got a good laugh out of it.

I wanted to be sure to get a group picture since it’s not a common occurrence to have all the grandparents together. We only took two, so imagine my surprise when one of them came out pretty damn good!

The whole fam damily.

TEEFERS!

You can’t imagine how hard it’s been to get some good pics of Owen’s new teeth. He shows them once in awhile, but it’s impossible to get a good (planned) picture of them—his mouth pretty much stays closed just enough to cover the teeth, and if you use your finger to pull his lip down he either sticks his tongue out to cover them or turns away.

It’s always fun when you’re scrolling through the pictures, after you’ve taken them off the camera, to find a picture that shows teeth—not just tiny stubs or a shadow or a hint of teeth—but real, honest-to-goodness teeth! Here are the best ones I’ve managed to get over the last month.

November 5:

November 12 (a bad pic overall, but a good teeth shot):

November 14:

And then I got these three today!!

Okay, now that I’ve posted those, I see that you still can’t really see them that well since they’re smaller versions. So here is a cropped shot:

Teefers (cropped)!

Visit with the cousins!

We decided it was time to go visit Lisa and Timmy and the kids, since we’ve been here a year, only live 1.5 hours away, and haven’t been there yet. We timed it for Owen’s nap times, and it worked perfectly.

We got there around noon, and they prepared a great lunch for us. Owen ate his normal baby food, but since we had a bunch of kid-friendly foods available, we gave him banana pieces (which we know he likes), then tried strawberry (which wasn’t too bad), bread (which he’s had before), and cheese (which he liked). He didn’t want a lot of any of the new foods, but at least he tried them and didn’t spit them out!

Owen was the youngest of the four—I think they’re five, two, and 17 months. The funny thing is that Owen is bigger than the 17-month old! Lisa says she’s 22#, but she felt A LOT lighter to me! :)) Here is the proof of the size difference (and you wonder why people think we have a toddler!):

And boy did Owen have fun with the cousins. (Technically I think they’re second cousins? My cousins’ kids?) Anyway, they were all banging on a plastic bin and talking and since he can’t talk, he was just screeching and having a blast making noise with them. And then Nick leaned over and gave him a kiss. Soooo cute!

And then Nick gave Owen a little rough-and-tumble-yet-gentle take-down from behind, and it was sooooo adorable, and Owen loved it. This was the best pic from the bunch:

We had a really good time, and we loved having Owen be able to play with (and just be around) kids of different ages. We hope to get together more often in the future so they kids will know each other…

Off to the ER again.

Tom woke up this morning in pain and told me he was staying home from work. He said he had major stomach cramps, couldn’t stay out of the bathroom, and couldn’t keep anything down. We thought it might be food poisoning (although we ate most of the same stuff) or the flu…so he tried to sleep it off. He came down a few hours later and said he was going to the hospital because he was STILL in major pain—and now it felt like his kidneys hurt.

I told him I could take him, but he said he was okay to drive himself—and I had to stay home with Owen.

Turns out he had kidney stones. Or, well, a major kidney stone. He was on major drugs and got a cat scan and the doc said the stone was 4-5mm. That is huge. He said they were going to keep him until it passed…and as the day wore on, he said they were keeping him overnight and if he didn’t pass it, they would have to use a stent.

Owen and I went and visited him for about an hour (and took him his phone charger) and that perked him up. He is indeed spending the night, and now we’re just waiting to see what happens.

I am taking full advantage of the house being totally quiet and going to bed early, and hopefully Tom will be released first thing in the morning (if all goes well).

2009 USMC Birthday Ball

The ball was a little different than last year…the tickets were a bit more (although still a good deal, considering they included dinner, an open bar, and the hotel room) and there were no giveaways because they lost a huge sponsor that they had last year. That said, we had an awesome time.

Of course, I was excited because I could drink this year—as last year I was pregnant! I wasn’t sure what my drink of choice would be, because typically a hotel open bar doesn’t have anything I really like, and get stuck drinking Vodka & Cranberry. But, this year they had Monster…which is similar to Red Bull…which I love with vodka…so I discovered a new drink and enjoyed them thoroughly all night! Probably a few too many, but damn it was fun.

Danced a bit, drank a bit, made some new friends (which I am sooooo excited about), and was in bed by midnight! Unfortunately, I forgot to take my Tylenol PM before I fell asleep, so I woke up in the middle of the night with a smashing headache, but wasn’t about to take a Tylenol PM at that point, so I just laid there and suffered, hoping I would fall asleep again…wondering how I could get my hands on any type of pill to take. About 6:30 Tom finally woke up and told me he had packed Excedrin! Ugh! If only I had known that when I first woke up!! The rest of the day was a great reminder of why I don’t drink like that anymore. XX(

Here is the official pic, copied and pasted from the photographer’s website. I hate it, of course. He took three pics and this was the best, and I still hate it. Aside from the fact I look pregnant, LOL, I hate that you can see the flag stands. Oh well.

Official 2009 Ball Photo

To his knees!

Owen can now pull himself up to his knees. He really wants to get up the step into the kitchen, but for now that still stops him. But he hangs out there a lot!

He will also pull himself up to his activity table and the doors on the entertainment center.

Oh, and just now, apparently he also pulls himself up to his diaper pail and is pulling out his bottom clothes drawer.

STINKER!

Owen’s 9-month appointment…and first blood.

Height: 30½” (95th percentile)
Head: 26″ (95th percentile)
Weight: 22lbs. 10oz. (50–75th percentile)

Overall, she said he looks great and I’m doing everything right. Phew!

She was impressed by his sleeping—she could NOT believe that not only did he sleep through the night, but that he slept from (generally) 6pm–6am. She was even more amazed when I told her that the previous night he slept from 4:30pm–6:30am. I told her we do whatever we can to keep his sleep schedule status quo with no disruptions like being away from home, staying out late at someone else’s house, etc. She said that sleeping that long (through the night) is fairly unusual, but that it’s great—and to keep doing whatever we’re doing because he has great sleep habits and it’s a great thing to start this young! So, YAY us! πŸ˜€

He didn’t love getting his ears or chest checked, but he did just fine.

I asked about the H1N1 and the generic flu shot, and they will have them in the office, they are just out of both right now. The nurse said she wouldn’t be in a rush to get the H1N1 since he’s not in daycare and we don’t generally come into contact with a lot of people, but she would highly recommend the normal flu shot. The nurse said the media is making it seem much crazier than it really is—the few cases they’ve actually seen are not that bad. That said, the doctor said if we wanted the H1N1 it would be okay, but also highly recommended the normal flu shot. So I have to call next week to see if they have them in and decide if we want him to get one or both shots.

Right before we left, he had to get a blood test—just a finger prick (he didn’t even make a peep!)—and she put a band-aid on it and said to leave it for at least 10 minutes. I put his mitten on and things were fine. We stopped to see dad at his office then went home, and since it had been much longer than 10 minutes, I took the mitten off. I was doing things around the living room for maybe (MAYBE!) five minutes, when I look over and see something dark on Owen’s lip, and I thought it was some fuzz off the floor or something (even though Tom vacuums every morning) so I come closer and—OMIGOD—it’s blood. BLOOD! 88| It took me a good two L—O—N—G seconds before I realized nothing serious was happening and it was just his finger bleeding.

But OMIGOD—his finger was bleeding…all over. Swear to god it was gushing. It was all over his pants and his face and in his hair—so the band-aid had obviously been off for a bit. So I grab a wipe to try to clean him up and stop the bleeding, and I see him drooling and don’t think much but then it hits me that it is A LOT of drool (it seemed like a bucketful) and I realize that OMIGOD the band-aid is in his mouth! 88| 88| Bad mom, bad mom, bad mom!

So I fish the band-aid out of his mouth while I’m still trying to clean him up and stop the bleeding, and I leave him for like 10 seconds to see if there’s a bandaid in the bathroom and there isn’t, so I grab a tissue and come back and there is blood all over again! From just a tiny finger prick! That had stopped bleeding IN THE OFFICE! Egads. So I pick him up, holding his finger in a tissue and trying to keep his finger out of his mouth, go upstairs to get a band-aid, sit him on the floor, clean him up again, and put on TWO band-aids. By the time Tom got home for lunch 10 minutes later, the band-aid was off again, although thankfully not in his mouth and not bleeding anymore.

So, then I changed him into his fourth outfit of the day. (The first one was soiled by the coffee spill/crawl. The second one was soiled from spit up. The third one from blood.) After lunch, it was outfit #5 after more spit up.

What a day!

He’s quick!

I had to laugh at Tom this morning. He left his half-full coffee mug on the floor while “he ran to do something quick” and in that minute, Owen spilled the coffee and laid in it! (Actually, Tom said it looked like he was trying to suck it up!) I said “You should know better to leave him alone with something like that!” and Tom just said “But I was only gone a minute!” Um, yeah. He’s quick. πŸ˜›

Houdini!

Owen is a Houdini in his crib. Tom said he went in this morning to check on him and sometime during the night he had managed to sneak his arms out through (over? under?) the mesh bumper to a bedside table and pull the (unplugged) clock radio cord AND an unused extension cord INTO his crib. 88|

I had actually forgotten the cords were there—they had been there for at least a few days—but how did he even know they were there? Was he just fishing for anything and caught them? Did he see them and then try to get them?

I know he loves cords, but that was impressive!

What a kid.

First trip to the mall!

We wanted to hit Baby Gap for some more socks, so it was off to Somerset. I have only been there once since we moved here (when I went to Nordstroms for my spa afternoon shortly after Owen was born) and Tom had never been there…

We ran a few other errands first, and Owen fell asleep in the 10 minutes it took between stops. I hated to wake him up but we really wanted to hit the mall. (Normally when he falls asleep in the car, we’re on our way home and he goes straight from the car to his crib to try and finish his nap.) We half expected him to fall asleep in the stroller but there was too much to see so he was wide awake!

We had lunch first, which included feeding him as well. What fun he had! Puffs on the floor, hands flailing about and landing in the food dad had opened and placed too close to the epicenter, and trying both of our soups! I think we went through four wipes, which is twice as many as we usually use at home!

He managed to stay awake the entire time we were at the mall, and didn’t even fall asleep on the ride home! However, once home and fed a bottle, he slept for…are you ready?? THREE AND A HALF HOURS! He was getting up at the time he is normally getting ready for bed! He ended up going to bed about 7 (so, not too much later than normal) and even though he didn’t seem totally tired, he was out in less than 15 minutes.

…Finishing the story here instead of posting the following day…

AND HE SLEPT IN UNTIL 7:15! Which was great for him, since that meant he slept his typical 12 hours (instead of getting up at 5am regardless of what time he went to bed) but it stunk for Tom since he didn’t get his normal morning baby time like he does every weekday morning.

So, we’re intrigued to see if the sleep pattern continues (7p-7a) or if it will go back to normal (more like 6p-6a). Amazingly, he slept through the time change PERFECTLY—sleeping through to his normal wake-up time of about 6:30 (meaning he slept an extra hour!).

Goodbye, helmet!

We had a helmet check-up today and I thought it was just going to be a normal check-up with some measurements and maybe a bit more grinding on the helmet…but the specialist just took a quick look and said “I think he’s done! I’m extremely pleased with the results!”

88|

I asked if he still had to wear it at night, like had been mentioned before, and he said no! He said since he rolls around so much and sleeps in all positions, he wasn’t worried about nighttime anymore. I also showed him one of the many face-plant pictures and he laughed. I wondered if Owen would still be able to sleep face-plant style without the breathing room the helmet allowed him.

So, Owen graduated today! YAY! He was in the helmet for just over three months (he got it July 24). Three months is apparently an AMAZING amount of time—most have to wear it at least four months, if not more.

It will be interesting to see how he adjusts to not having it on all the time—how bumps to the head (and the like) will make him react. But, he’s already napped face-plant style so apparently he can do that with or without the helmet, LOL. :))

Happy Halloween!

Gramma Jean made this video initially, then I tried to redo it with different pictures, but it turned out about the same. Owen just takes the cake. This makes me smile and laugh each and every time I watch it…

Edited on November 10, 2009, to say that I finally broke down and bought the actual video for $5—I figured it was worth it for something that brought me so many smiles. πŸ˜€ So now it’s uploaded at YouTube instead of just having a link.

Stomach to sitting!

So, now that Owen can crawl (he’s getting pretty good!), I wondered what the next achievement would be. As I watched him play on his stomach and roll around, I decided it would probably be moving from his stomach (or crawling) to a sitting position. Well, within a few hours, he did it! I watched him on his stomach, playing with a toy, to pushing up on his arms, and then voilΓ ! He was sitting up straight! YAY OWEN!

First Cheerio!

We were at our twice-monthly moms’ group and the babes were all rolling around, taking each others’ toys, and it was just so. damn. cute. Of course, while we are there, it’s usually snack or feeding time, so we had our puffs out. Another mom had Cheerios. I’ve been wanting to try Cheerios, but I really didn’t want to buy a whole box because I probably wouldn’t eat them if Owen didn’t like them. And I’ve been hesitating on “real” food like that because he really doesn’t like textures much, and he’s just now mastering the really airy, melt-in-your-mouth puffs.

So I gave him a Cheerio. Broken in half, but still a Cheerio. And he opened his mouth readily, took the Cheerio, munched for a few seconds, then opened his mouth for more! YAY OWEN! Then I set him on the floor, and moments later, he was at the feet of the mom (with the Cheerios) who had happened to drop some on the floor…hence Owen crawling over there. πŸ™‚ So cute! πŸ˜€ So he reached for one! I grabbed it, broke it in half again, and he eagerly ate both pieces! So it looks like we may be able to go up to Cheerios! Maybe after we finish our bottle of puffs!

Facebook Updates

It seems like I’m always writing about Owen these days, but really, not much else is going on for me to write about here. I mean, just take a look at my recent Facebook updates…most of them have to do with the boy!

  • Jennifer Hudson hates clueless old drivers. Some guy almost backed into me in a parking lot because he didn’t look behind him first–and kept going even after I honked at him! I actually had to quick back up because he was NOT stopping. Asshat.
  • Jennifer Hudson is thinking her epsiode of acid reflux the other night wasn’t from the margarita…because I’m experiencing it daily now. πŸ™
  • Jennifer Hudson wonders if it was the Tylenol or just being tired, or a combo of both that let the boy nap for 2.5 hours?
  • Jennifer Hudson wonders if anyone else has ever had lotion turn into [for all basic purposes] water? Apparently that’s what happens when you never use it and keep it for ~8 years.
  • Jennifer Hudson really needs to figure out her sleep number so her back doesn’t hurt every damn morning. That said, my back just hasn’t been the same since I was pregnant so maybe the sleep number is useless at this point.
