Owen’s Name

Owen wrote his name for the first time today—and if you look closely, you can actually see all the letters! (We were drawing on an iPad app to email to Gramma Jean.) It was a combination of left- and right-handed!

The O is pretty obvious.

The W is good as well.

The E is a little shaky but readable.

The N is… (I did the yellow one as an example.)

Multiple phone calls

Owen playing with his toy phone this morning:

The phone’s ringing. That means people are calling. Talk to phone next to ear.

Grandpa’s calling. Hi grandpa. What’s up? See you soon. Okay bye.

Mommy!! Okay mama, what’s up?

Oh! Gramma’s calling me?! Hi! I’ll call you back as soon as I can!

That was grandpa and gramma and grandma Marsha and mama! In this phone! Right here!

Hi gramma. What’s up?

Same outfit, same age.

When I was cleaning out the garage last weekend, I pulled out some old outfits of Owen’s that I wanted Katie to wear so I could try and get “matching” pictures. I couldn’t remember the exact age to get them SUPER matching, so today seemed like a good day. And then I went back and found the picture of Owen that I remembered in the outfit (it was one of our favorites!) and imagine my surprise when I counted the days of both and Owen was 3 months 27 days old and Katie was 3 months 28 days old! I couldn’t have planned it much better if I had tried!

Learning to get up

OWEN GOT OUT OF HIS BED TO PEE! It was only naptime and he had only been in there five minutes and his door was open…but it’s a start!

You see, we’ve been trying to teach him that if he has to pee, he can get out of bed…which has been an uphill battle since we kept him “locked” in his room for so long.

And in trying to do so, we’ve actually created a little monster—after we put him to bed, we’ll hear him get up and open his door. He’s not getting up to pee, though—he just goes back to bed. But often whines a little because a cat gets in and bothers him. (He doesn’t want the cat in there but apparently doesn’t understand that the door needs to stay closed to prevent that.)

And then one night last week he was up opening his door at 3am—and crying. And couldn’t tell me what was wrong. I put him back to bed, then did the same thing again at 3:30 and 4:30, when I finally laid with him for a bit.

So today was a good first step with him realizing he had to pee and actually getting up to do it!

Typical Threenager Tantrum

All I wanted to do was to get him dressed to go shopping.

This is typically what we get during an Owen tantrum—and I guess it’s not so much a tantrum as a power struggle. I did wait a bit longer than I normally would because I was recording it…but this is the gist of what happens—complete with eye-crossing. Of course, as soon as I stopped recording and he was dressed, he was all happy like nothing happened.

Daily Daddy Questions

Owen just woke up and came downstairs half crying: “I can’t find daddy anywhere!” 🙁

I don’t know why he has an issue with this every day—though most days it’s just “Where’s daddy?” and I say “He’s at work” or say “Where do you think daddy is?” and he answers “At work” and that’s that…

Good thing the couch is comfy.

Tom has been sick for a few days which means he’s been snoring a little extra at night. Sometimes I can stand it (if I happen to fall asleep during a lull) or sometimes I try to sleep (which ends up to be crappy tossing-and-turning-and-waiting-all-night sleep)…so last night I just gave up at the start and went to sleep on the couch. The first time in 11 years of marriage.

It’s a good thing the couch is pretty comfy.

What a night. And morning.

I went to bed at midnight. Owen was up at 3 (for no real reason that I could tell). Then Tom was snoring, Owen got up again at 3:30 and 4, Tom was still snoring so when Owen got up again at 4:30, I went in to sleep with him (not good sleep, but at least it was quiet). Then Tom got up about 5a and STARTED RIPPING OUT THE KITCHEN SINK. But I didn’t know that’s what he was doing until I went down at 6 to ask what the hell he was doing that was so noisy. I finally got back to sleep in my own bed about 6:30. Then I got up at 8…so I’ve basically had four hours of sleep. 😐 But I had a nice new sink and faucet installed by 8am.

Oops!

We were going through Owen’s bedtime routine and I was brushing his teeth. When I’m done, he gets to drink water and spit (his favorite part—I let him do more than necessary because he loves it so—and it hopefully keeps him out if the bathroom doing it unattended).

So tonight he was drinking and spitting, drinking and spitting, drinking and spitting—when he stops and says “OOPS!”—realizing he had unintentionally swallowed the last mouthful of water instead of spitting it out. Then he started laughing like “How did that happen?” It was adorable.

Helping, Camping, Playing

Owen was a big help getting Katie inside for my doctor’s appointment today.

It was an OB appointment so I didn’t really want Owen there (the kid certainly doesn’t need to be traumatized like that!), but he’s been a little sick so I couldn’t take him to daycare. Luckily there was a curtain which I turned into a tent and camping experience—which he loved. Phew! Now he’d hopefully be occupied and not see me in the stirrups. 🙂 And he liked peeking out at me.

And of course afterwards he had to play around…

I think someone was jealous.

All I know is that when Katie was done with her bath (which we do on the floor because there’s really no good/convenient spot to do it on a counter—and I can manage it by myself if I have to) Owen was standing there looking a bit longingly at the tub. I actually thought he might hop in fully clothed, so I asked if he wanted to get in. No, he didn’t. Then by the time I walked to the toy room to dress Katie, Tom yelled at me that my boy was in the tub!

Then…and now.

Trick or Treating

Owen was VERY excited to go trick-or-treating. He had told us he was going to be Thor (he has both Thor and Captain America costumes) but at the last moment, he decided he wanted to be Captain America. Which was fine, except the mask that came with the costume didn’t fit (it was the one Katie wore in earlier pictures), and the mask we bought separately was heavier than the Thor mask and didn’t fit him as well…but you can’t explain that to a toddler. So Captain America it was.

And then we were off!

And then a few houses down we ran into another Captain America—the little boy he has played with before—and it was hilarious! They saw each other, got super excited, and were running around their yard together! Owen kept saying “TWO SHIELDS! HE HAS A SHIELD!” The other kid (Andrew) is about 4.5. EEK, I know.

After we hit the few houses on our street, Owen was done with the mask—and Tom had the shield to carry as well since Owen refused to wear it on his arm and couldn’t hold it in his hand, hold his candy bag, and grab treats all at the same time.

Tom went up with him to the houses this year so I didn’t get to hear his cute version of “Trick or treat” or “Thank you” but he did really well. It wasn’t too busy or crowded when we were out, which was good—but we did skip two houses that were too loud (those cackling figures and loud music) and too scary (fog machines and lots of people). About halfway through, he kept saying how heavy his bag was and how many treats he had…so we dumped some of them in the stroller. 🙂

Katie tagged along with me…no costume, but comfy as a bug!

We made it to more houses this year, but Owen declared he was done when there were still a few houses to go. We asked if he wanted to go get more candy and he said no, he wanted to go home. Okay then.

Here he is with his stash. He wanted to sort it and find matchers…but wasn’t really that interested in eating any of it. He tried a bite of a Tootsie Roll and two Milk Duds and that was it.
