Michigan Weather!

So yesterday it got to be probably 85°.

Now, you would think that after the yucky cold winter we just had that we would have loved yesterday. Well, we really didn’t because it was just too warm.

And this house is (we just learned) annoying when windows are open and it’s at all breezy. You see, the windows open from side to side and upstairs? The blinds all open up and down…meaning that you have to have the blinds all completely open so that the breeze doesn’t hit them and bang them around. And even if you do that, the cord/cabling system is not hooked down, so that then flies around and smacks the wall as well. Very irritating.

That said, most of the downstairs get good cross-ventilation—except, of course, for the room we are in the most: the living room (kind of like our house in NC where the living room got the worst A/C flow of the entire house). There is a nice big window in the living room, but of course the big heavy couch is in front of it so you have to climb on the couch to heave open the window (because, of course, that window doesn’t slide easily). But it is under the awning, so we can leave the window open when it rains.

But this house gets WARM. It wasn’t really even THAT warm or humid yesterday—and the day even got cooled off by a thunderstorm mid-afternoon—but the house was WARM. And upstairs was worse. Poor Owen—first his room is too cold so we buy a heater…now it’s too warm and we’re NOT buying a portable air conditioner so he will have to make do with a fan. We got out a fan for our room, too—as well as a fan in the living room.

Needless to say WE MISS CEILING FANS. This house would be a lot more bearable weather-wise with ceiling fans.

We are not looking forward to warmer weather. We do have A/C, but we’re sure something will be wrong with it, LOL.

ARGH!!!!!

Sometimes, you just want to scream. Mostly when a bunch of little things irritate you within a short period of time.

Like today.

  • It was raining, which was a pain in the butt for running errands with the boy. Normally no big deal, but it was the start of things.
  • The sections of couch will NOT stay in place, and I am constantly moving them back where they should be. We thought the carpet piece would help, but it doesn’t. Again, this is not a big deal, but it happens day after day after day after day after day…
  • Things are constantly falling in between the sections—today, it was my cell phone (twice) which I try to keep near me at all times. Sometimes I put it in the basket (which houses most of my day-to-day essentials) but I had just set it down because Tom had called.
  • Charlie, my lover lap kitty, wanted attention at the same time I was feeding Owen, and she would not leave me alone.
  • Of course, when I say “feeding Owen” I mean ATTEMPTING to feed Owen, because he was being supremely fussy and wiggly and although he was hungry (he was giving me the snorting cry) he would not settle down enough to actually eat.
  • I decided to try and watch a Netflix movie that has been sitting here for over a week—and normally it’s no big deal to watch something on TV. I mean, I watch TV on a daily basis with the kid awake and/or feeding him or whatnot. But not today, apparently. After having to rewind the movie three times in the first five minutes…I gave up.
  • Oh, and I have kept forgetting to reprogram the remote, so when you hit “watch DVD” everything changes correctly EXCEPT the receiver, which doesn’t get the correct sound input…normally not a big deal, except I had JUST sat down to feed the boy, and he was being cranky and the cat was nudging me for attention and I had just dropped my phone between the couch sections…so I got up (keeping the bottle in his mouth—a feat in itself!) and fixed the sound, got myself reseated on the couch, and then noticed…
  • I had dropped both burp cloths AND the boppy (both of which I need during feeding).
  • In the meantime, Owen has cranked it up two notches and was SCREAMING but REFUSING to eat.
  • And on top of all this, I have apparently forgotten how to deal with a period and I will leave it at that.

ARRRRRGH!!!!!!

So I put the boy in his crib (well, pack-and-play), gave him a pacifier, turned his mobile on…and that seemed to be the answer.

In the resulting quiet, I was able to clean up the kitchen a bit (including put away most of my Target bags from this morning), change the laundry, and just sit and enjoy the silence.

And I just realized I could have been watching the movie this whole time. |-|

25 Additional Random Things

I keep thinking about my previous list of Random Things, and reading other people’s lists, and I wanted to have another go at it.

  1. Back in the day, I was sure I was going to write the next great American novel someday. I guess I still have time, but it seems much more of a pipe dream at this point in my life.
  2. Sometimes I think I want four or five kids, because I love having large family gatherings—and it’s what I’m used to. But I’m not sure I want to be pregnant that many times!
  3. I knew the night I met my husband that we would get married. It was love at first sight.
  4. Someday I will live in my dream house—a ranch with enough space for everything, a great party kitchen with professional appliances, and a hot tub. There’s more, but that’s the gist.
  5. We’ve been on two cruises and I love them. LOVE THEM LOVE THEM LOVE THEM! I would go on a cruise every other month if I could afford it.
  6. I would love to live by family for the rest of my life, but I just don’t think we can live in the cold anymore.
  7. I hope that I can be a good parent. Everyone assures me I will be, but I just don’t feel it yet.
  8. I could eat an entire box of Krispy Kreme Original donuts if given the opportunity. Especially if they were Hot & Fresh.
  9. My favorite salad is mixed greens with Craisins, toasted pecans, feta cheese, and Amish Dressing (a sweet mustard dressing).
  10. Sometimes I want to sell everything and just start over.
  11. I am a PC person (we have three), but would be willing to give a Mac a try if they weren’t so damn expensive.
  12. I’ve always wanted to see Jimmy Buffet in concert and he’s coming here in August. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
  13. I really want to travel around the world—one of my top places is Fiji, where we initially wanted to go for our honeymoon but never quite made it.
  14. I love music from the 50s and 60s. I guess it’s from growing up listening to it via my parents!
  15. I have never had a broken bone.
  16. I have been to the emergency room four times that I can remember: 1) when I jammed scissors into my hand when I was about seven or eight, 2) when I fell off my bike in high school, 3) when I sliced the tip of my finger off in college when working at Glen’s, and 4) when I fell down the stairs last year and twisted both my ankles.
  17. I love organization—storage containers/bins/baskets, shelving, labellers… Maybe because I’m a packrat as well?
  18. I hate my legs so rarely wear skirts or dresses unless they are ankle length. I hate shorts, too, but had to wear them in North Carolina to survive the summers.
  19. I miss reading. I couldn’t even tell you the last “real” book I read (real meaning NOT baby-related help books).
  20. I cannot believe our thermostat is set at 60 for a Michigan winter—and our heating bill is still $300.
  21. I just figured out that my numerology life path number is 5, which “suggests that you entered this plane with a highly progressive mindset, with the attitude and skills to make the world a better place.” Interesting.
  22. Someday I hope to have a job I truly enjoy. I can’t even imagine what that would be like. Heaven, maybe?
  23. I know I complain too much and am trying to get better about that. Or at least tell the same amount of “good” stories so people don’t think my life is ALL bad.
  24. I love love love my car, a 2001 Toyota Highlander purchased brand new a week before we got married. I would buy the same exact car in an instant, but the new Highlanders are NOT the same.
  25. I have a personalized license plate that says TRAVCTY. It was strange living in NC and having people know what it meant!

25 Random Things

I got tagged on Facebook to create a list of 25 Random things, facts, habits, or goals about myself. It’s great fun to read other people’s lists, and while you are reading their lists, you can think of a hundred things about yourself…until you try to write your own list. Anyway, I thought it was kinda fun, so decided to cross-post it here. Enjoy!

  1. Today I am laundering baby clothes for the first time.
  2. For the past month, I have spent just about the majority of every day on the couch with a laptop and remote at my side, and with a dog and cat on my lap under a blanket. It sucks being 7-8 months pregnant and having no energy.
  3. I really really really miss all our friends in North Carolina.
  4. We have no friends in Michigan (that are really close enough to do things with).
  5. I think I would go insane without our TiVo.
  6. I am aghast at the monthly gas bills here ($307 this month). That is insane, when you add the electric bill in, too. And we thought NC summers were bad!
  7. I love my Slanket.
  8. We have lived here almost three months and there is still unpacking to do. The basement is scary full of junk.
  9. BUT WE HAVE A BASEMENT!!
  10. Prenatal vitamins have done NOTHING for my nails. My nails are pathetic.
  11. Wooly Mammoth Crocs are the shit.
  12. I think our local Krispy Kreme should have a Twitter feed for when their donuts are Hot & Fresh so I know when to go.
  13. I love grocery shopping! You should see our freezer and pantry!
  14. I really don’t want to have this baby early, but DAMN I want to be rid of the acid reflux, heartburn, and neverending peeing.
  15. I thought I would love having wood floors, but turns out I don’t. They’re noisy and cold. At least in this house.
  16. I want fries.
  17. I am watching Bob & Tom Radio on WGN on the TiVo as I compile this list.
  18. I am trying to decide what shows to cut out of my viewing schedule, as I know that having a newborn will not be conducive to watching the same amount of TV as I do now. Damn kids. 😛
  19. I would KILL to go on a style show like Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style. I need a new style, a new wardrobe, a new haircut…and not the first clue how to go about it myself.
  20. I can’t wait until the day when we can have our dream house, in our dream location, with great friends, a basket of Bostons [Boston Terriers], and maybe one or two more kids.
  21. I watch “Jon & Kate Plus 8” because I figure if they can handle EIGHT kids, I can surely handle ONE.
  22. I really should be taking more pregnant pictures of me because, although I hate how I look now, I am sure I will want pictures of me later.
  23. I am not doing well on my everything-I-thought-I-would-get-done-while-I-wasn’t-working-before-the-baby-arrived to do list.
  24. Skip the Pet-i-Cure. It was great for the three or four times we used it until it died. That was $50 down the toilet.
  25. I am watching American Idol for the first time in years.

Impossible to find a heater

So after we got our first heating bill of about $200—and only having had the thermostat set to about 67°—we decided to turn it down even more and try to find a small heater to heat just the living room (where we spend the most time).

The living room sits on a slab and is FREEZING. We have covered the bay window with plastic and we have plugged the fireplace with styrofoam, but it’s still cold (even before last week’s arctic cold front). On average, a thermometer registers 55-57°. 88| >:XX

We obviously don’t want anything expensive or anything that will crank up our electric bill. And we thought it would be easy to find a heater. Just do a bit of research then go buy one.

Ha.

HAHA.

I think after two weeks, we’re on our fourth heater.

The first was the highly recommended DeLonghi mica panel radiator for $80 at Home Depot. I didn’t like it, as it didn’t seem to heat up the room enough. It’s a hard room to heat, though, as it’s open to the kitchen.

The next one we tried was a friend-recommended Vornado electric heater—for about $140. That didn’t heat up the room well, either. A few degrees, but I wanted more than a few degrees, because that only put it up to like 61° or so. And for that much money, I wanted better results.

The next one was a parabolic heat dish from Costco for $60—we had high hopes because it put out a lot of heat on the display. Just not when we got it home. Well, if you stood directly in front of it you got warm…just not the whole room.

The next was an oil-filled radiator from Lowes which pretty much everyone said would be perfect. Can I get a big HAHA on that one? We gave it the few hours to warm up and…nothing. Another few degrees to 61° was all we got.

So now we have no idea what to try next.

Stupid winter.

It’s snowing – times two!

There is a horrible storm predicted for today/tonight, and it has started. When I got up to pee at 3:30 it was still clear and there was nothing on the ground, but by the time Tom was getting ready to leave at 7am, there was already some accumulation. Unfortunately, I also think it might be somewhat wet, as I could HEAR it snowing when I let the dog out.

Oh, and you may have noticed it’s snowing on the blog, too. I only thought it appropriate to add that for the season. 🙂 (Hint: If you move your mouse across the screen, it acts like wind and the snow will change course. Also, if you stay on the page long enough, the snow will accumulate on the bottom.)

A new look for the blog…for the season.

I loved the previous skin I was using, but in honor of moving to Michigan (and seeing as how it’s just about winter—although, knock on wood, today it got to 70) I thought I would change the skin to something a bit more wintery.

I do have a bit of tweaking to do, but for the most part, it will look like this until I’m sick of winter…so, maybe a month or two? XX(

😀

Amazing Storm

Yeah, it was raining and the wind was picking up…so Tom was out turning the grill off (we decided there was no point, with the wind gusting like it was).

So I kept on making my potato salad, and let me just tell you…there’s nothing quite like looking out on the deck and seeing your patio table and umbrella flying across the porch and pinning your husband against the railing. 88|

The winds had suddenly gusted quite a bit stronger and pretty much came out of nowhere.

Hubby is okay, and he managed to get the table and umbrella back down without breaking anything. One metal tomato stake is a little worse for the wear—and I got a little drenched hurriedly hauling chairs into the house so they didn’t end up in the lawn—but otherwise everything survived.

And, of course, within 10 minutes, the wind had died down completely and it even stopped raining. |-|

Random Blather

I am soooooooooo tired of this heat wave. I swear this is the hottest it’s been since we moved here. Too hot to do anything except quickly rush from A/C to A/C. Tom even says it’s hot, and he was in Iraq (although he does admit Iraq was hotter).

I went to get gas yesterday morning because it was still $3.86 (it had been that for, I swear, two weeks) and I knew it was supposed to be going up this week. So I pull in and there is NO unleaded—just mid-grade and premium. Of course, after work, when they had raised the price 12c, there was unleaded. Bastards.

Why must people try to exit a gas station by making a left turn, in rush hour, at an intersection—when they could just as easily have driven through the parking lot and exited 100 yards farther down where there is much less traffic? Instead, they sit there, blocking the exit for those of us exiting and turning right into traffic (in this case, about 10 cars). So I drove the extra 100 yards and was able to turn directly into the flow of traffic and bypass the jerk who was STILL waiting to turn left.

I love my Tivo peeps. I needed help with something that I just couldn’t figure out so I posted about it—and within 10 minutes they started having answers for me.

On same said board, someone started a thread called “What do you look like today?” and I just love it! Well, everyone loves it, actually! People post pics from their cell phones or webcams or whatnot…and it’s very interesting! After posting about 10 pics myself, I noticed that I look pretty much the same in every one—I just either have curly hair or straight hair—so I said I was going to stop posting, but apparently some of the guys like the cleavage that ends up in some of the pics and have requested that I keep posting. :)) So I posted this one for them today:

Depressing thought of the day: I just happened to login to take a look at our mortgage stuff, and after paying every month for coming-up-on three years, we are just SLIGHTLY under the official selling price. GAH!

I can’t wait for our tomatoes to be ready to harvest! We do have a few jalapeño that are ready to pick, and of course I have been harvesting basil all along, but the tomatoes are what I’m jonesing for. Someday, somewhere, I hope to have a REAL garden!

On another gas note, the Prius has been wonderful! We used to use my car for everything—every run to town, every errand, every road trip—and I had to fill up about once a week. Now that we take the Prius everywhere (and I only drive to/from work), I am only filling up about every 2-3 weeks! 😀 So, we traded paying for gas for paying for a new car. I’d say that was a good trade!

Weather Update

Sunny, gorgeous, and 68. Now, THIS is January. :>>

Compared to the 25 (15 with wind chill) we had last week, this is pure, unadulterated heaven. All the windows in the house are open, the animals have all staked out their spot of sunshine, and I forgot just how great a nap is in the fresh air!

I’ve been a bad, bad blogger.

Yes, I know I haven’t been writing anything lately. And I feel bad.

But it’s just that the longer I take to catch you up, the more stuff happens, and the harder it is to catch up. A catch-22 if you will.

But I know I have to fill you in with some details (obviously the short versions) until I get more time:

  • The animals are fine.
  • Tom’s visit home was wonderful—although too short—and we had a great time with friends in Florida.
  • I am eating healthy (hate to call it dieting) and have lost almost 25# so far (since Tom left).
  • I am still at my job (although that could be a VERY LONG story).
  • I haven’t been seeing too much of my friends around here.
  • I did have family down to visit, and more coming soon!
  • I had computer/general tech difficulties, which kept me frustrated and offline more than usual (although all is well now).
  • It’s finally cooling down here (68 today, but 85 last week).

I promise to try and write more in the upcoming weeks.

Maggie does not like storms!

So tonight it was storming—thunder and lightning, the whole shebang. I knew from before that Maggie doesn’t like storms, but she isn’t usually too bad—she likes to come hide with me, try to get behind me on the couch, that sort of thing. I usually keep her occupied by playing fetch.

But last night it was pretty bad, and something struck and messed with the receiver (I was watching TV, so it was on) and the sound went HAYWIRE, got very loud and fuzzy, and it scared the shit out of her (hell, it scared the shit out of me!) :)) and she was shaking and trembling and panting (complete with tongue hanging out). She wanted to hide but didn’t want to get under the blanket, she wanted to sit on my lap but didn’t want to stay, she wanted me to give her attention but didn’t want to let me hold her, she wanted to sit on top of the couch behind my head but she wanted me to help her get up there!

I would just get her calmed down a little, but she was still panting like crazy and shaking like mad. It was really scary for me to see her like that—I knew she was just scared and had been frightened, but I just kept thinking something else might be wrong (which of course it wasn’t). After about 15 minutes, she finally layed down on my lap and after about an hour, she finally stopped shaking. Poor thing!!

What a gorgeous day!

Today is a gorgous day—sunny, breezy, and 80°—and it’s a nice surprise, since the past few days have been quite warm. I have all the windows open and there’s a nice breeze blowing throughout the house. The birds are [still] chirping. People are mowing their lawns so the neighborhood is filled with that delicious fresh-cut grass smell… It’s also a day where I wish I actually golfed so I could take advantage of living in a golf course community! :))

If only the entire summer could be like this, I am pretty sure we would never leave.

I love a rainy Sunday.

We haven’t had a rainy Sunday in awhile, and I just love them. I usually feel guilty about sleeping in or staying in bed late and watching TV (cuddled up with Maggie), but last night was stormy and it continued this morning, so I actually DIDN’T feel guilty this morning, and actually even fell back asleep with Maggie snoring next to me. What a luxury! By this point in the day, however, it has finally cleared up enough to open the windows and enoy a little bit of sunshine…

It’s the same old argument at work…

It’s the same old argument at work—it’s too freakin’ cold in here and the bosses don’t care. I hate hate HATE dressing for office weather—when it’s 73 and gorgeous outside, I shouldn’t have to have my heater on or wear a freakin’ sweater.

Just yesterday, the bosses (and the other agent) were going to be gone ALL day. So I innocently asked if we couldn’t bump the temp up just a smidge because BOTH OF US were freezing and they were going to be gone ALL DAY. Of course, I got attitude about it, and was told that “we keep it cool for our clients.” Okay, but if you are not going to be here, why would your clients be here? Even if they just stopped by, I don’t think having the office at 72 is going to sweat them out after three minutes.

I just get SO tired of it. And so tired of the attitude I get. One day, a boss walked in and said “It feels perfect in here so you must be freezing!” Like it’s some big joke. Yeah, haha, funny, I’m glad you are enjoying that I’m freezing. 😡

When do you care about how cold it is?

That was the question posed the other day on the forum I frequent (the one where we met the people at New Years). The poll choices were:

  • 50°
  • 30°
  • -10°
  • -25°

Having lived in Michigan most of my life, of course my first instinct was to say -25°. That said, having now lived in North Carolina for the last three years…I’d say 30°. (In my heart of hearts I really thought about saying 50°, but 50° is just chilly…while 30° is flat out COLD.)

So this morning, my little desktop weather channel icon was flashing red, which means a severe weather warning. Severe weather? I had no idea what it could be—this isn’t hurricane season! :)) So I clicked on it and…cold weather. Supposedly the worst cold weather of the season is coming over the next few days. And what is this extreme cold weather?

DAYTIME TEMPS WITH HIGHS IN THE MID- TO UPPER-30S WITH OVERNIGHT TEMPS IN THE UPPER TEENS AND 20S

I laughed. Yes, it’s cold for NC, but I guess I am still a Michigan girl at heart because that made me laugh out loud.

Wah! It’s too cold here!

I know I have a post like this whenever it gets cold, but man, I don’t think I could survive in Michigan anymore. This morning we had a deep frost and today I think it only got to 50, but it was COLD! Too damn cold if you ask me. Yes, I looked at Michigan’s temps today, and they were in the 20s…which is why I don’t think I could survive a winter there. This upcoming two weeks for Christmas is going to be a trial, that’s for sure—I’ve already dug out my parka and I have new gloves and I’m digging out the turtlenecks and sweatshirts! Last week it was in the 70s—I want that back!!

Talk about a DUH moment!

So since it’s been getting quite chilly at night, we finally put our heated mattress pad back on the bed. However, instead of putting it on normally—where the plug is at the bottom of the bed—we reversed it so that we could keep all the cords at the head of the bed so they would be hidden from view.

So last night when we went to bed, Tom was cold so he turned his side on. Fast forward to the middle of the night when I woke up feeling a little warm. That sometimes happens to me when I wake up suddenly, so didn’t think much about it. A while later, I was STILL warm and threw the covers partially off. I could not figure out why I was so warm.

Well, it wasn’t until about 5am that I realized—DUH!—we had flipped the cover, so Tom’s controls worked MY side of the bed (and vice versa)! No wonder I was so warm!!!

In the morning, we had a good laugh when I informed him what had happened. His first words? “No wonder I was freezing all night! I could NOT get warm!”

I do not know how I am going to survive…

I do not know how I am going to survive back in Michigan winters. This morning in North Carolina it is 35° and I am hating it! HATING IT! We didn’t have the heat on, so the house was 51° this morning, I took a 15-minute HOT shower (I’m usually out in under 10), poor Maggie was bundled up under the blankets in her crate (see below!) and did NOT want to come out, she was shivering after 10 seconds outside (as I was!), and I have no good warm clothes to wear (that fit, but that’s fodder for another post).

Maggie wrapped in a blanket

What is up with this cold weather this early? Last winter must have been unseasonably warm, as I SPECIFICALLY remember not having to wear a coat until mid-December, and even then, it was only sporadically.

Nope, my boss doesn’t care.

So, this morning, as I was being blinded by the sun yet again (see October 11 entry), I said “We really need blinds for the front door!” My boss, who was standing behind me at the copier, asked why. I sat right in the line of fire (per se) and said “Because I get blinded every morning for about an hour. I cannot sit in front of my computer!”

She turned to see the sun in my eyes, laughed like “Oh, isn’t that funny” and suggested that I “move my desk so I’m facing the corner.”

Gee, thanks for your concern and your valid suggestion. 🙄

I hate sunshine in the morning.

At work, that is, when I’m at my desk.

You see, the sun shines DIRECTLY in through the glass front door DIRECTLY into my eyes when I’m sitting where I normally should be. So, to avoid the BLINDING sun, I have to scrunch/lean to the left and throw my back out of whack.

Of course, my bosses don’t care about this at all since they don’t have to sit here and be thoroughly annoyed (or blinded) by it. Similarly, they also don’t seem to care that I have to have the blinds shut otherwise I have a headache after about an hour—I have a huge window right at my desk…which sounds nice, but it’s extremely bright and annoying. I’ve mentioned it time and again and have actually been told yes, something needs to be done (since they don’t like the blinds closed) but has anything happened?

I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Amazingly Fantabulous Weather

I’m not sure whether the almost-hurricane blew nice, cool air into town or whether we were just due for a cold front (per se) but man, is it ever nice. It’s in the 70s and we have all the windows open—I can’t wait to sleep all night with the cool air blowing in! I have to say (as I say every time we have this freak weather) that if the weather was like this all the time down here, we would NEVER leave.

Two gripes for the day

I know, I know, there should be no gripes on a long holiday weekend…but you know me.

One, it’s back up to 90+ degrees.

Two, it’s apparently near impossible to find any shower stall (54″ x 78″) curtains. You’d think Bed Bath & Beyond would have them, but it seems they have more Bed and Beyond than they do Bath these days. They had one (count ’em ONE) “extra long” shower curtain—that wasn’t a liner. (We don’t have a stall shower per se, but it’s more a stall than a regular, so our current curtain bunches together too much—and we only have like a 2″ lip on the bottom, so the curtain has to hang quite low.) I have a shower curtain that I love….but would give it up if I could find one I liked that fit right.
