We tried the totwaffle!

It all started with this viral Facebook post: https://www.facebook.com/506801921/posts/10156771865371922/?d=n which starts like this:

So we decided it had to be done.

Step 1: Thawing

And Tom was in charge and I was busy working so I didn’t get any more pictures until the end.

Aaaand…it took much longer to cook than we thought, plus Tom didn’t fill it full enough to start so had to add some more tots halfway through. This pic is after we took some off for the kids.

We also made the syrup/ketchup mix (read the linked post for details) and it was yummy. The tots were crispy but I’d like them even crispier.

In short, they were good and a nice change…and the candied bacon and cheesy scrambled eggs were good sides…but I probably wouldn’t do the totwaffle again. I’m perfectly happy to expend way less energy and effort and just have tots.

Katie was one happy poop face.

I gave Katie some new face paints awhile back and she’s been begging to use them but she didn’t want to do it herself—and Owen wouldn’t let her paint on him—so today Tom promised he would paint her face. And they decided on a poop emoji.

She was so excited when it was done and she loved it so much she could barely stand still.

After this she did get Owen to paint on her arms…and eventually it led to getting paint all over the couch so that wasn’t fun. But I got it mostly cleaned up so all was well.

Show me your drunk face v2

I innocently started a Facebook group to continue the drunk face thing…and we had a mini explosion. Over 100 people joined and a fair amount of them have posted!

Most are my friends (from all times and areas of my life—going back to high school classmates and my first internet friends from 1997 to family members and of course Tivo peeps) but others are inviting people, too!

It really isn’t a drunken fest—it’s more a show me what you’re drinking but I just thought the original sounded funnier.

Y’all. It’s time for a quadruple.

The kids went outside today…and ignored my instructions about playing with neighbors… SO THAT WAS…FUN.

 SETTLE IN, Y’ALL…here’s what happened on our first day of self-distanced shelter-at-home Spring Break.

The day was going as expected with sibling squabbles and whining about iPad time and complaining about little chores and me not getting to the taxes because work stuff popped up. So I finally sent them outside…and that was the beginning of the fall.

What happened you ask? Well, I might have gone a little crazy bonkers yelling at the kids when they ignored my instructions about playing with neighbors…

Granted it wasn’t one of my better parenting moments but we have just been stressing the importance of staying away from EVERYONE—learning how quickly germs travel and talking about it all the time and why it’s important and how we’re sorry you can’t play with friends now…and then to see them wilfully disobey me? Not good.

Yes, I know they’re kids. Yes, I know they forget—SQUIRREL!!—which is exactly why I said just talk across yards. But then it became “we’ll stay apart” in the driveway and I said no because you’re kids and we can’t trust that you will STAY apart even though you think you will. Heads hanging they went back outside. And the next thing I know I hear screams of kids having fun in our yard so I went to look—really hoping they were being good—and I saw five of them all too close. 

Now am I really and truly worried that something bad is going to happen? No. I’m practically the farthest thing from a germaphobe you might find—but I’m trying to be proactive here because too many people think it’s no big deal and look where that got us?

So I was THAT mom who opened the front door and screamed to her children to get their butts inside and for the neighbor kids to GO HOME. I might have been loud enough for long enough that Tom came up from the office downstairs to see what was going on. And then we both proceeded to let the kids know why we were upset with them—for probably a good 10 minutes. Again, not terribly proud of how we handled it but I was just shaking I was so mad. Like I was kind of scared at how mad I was. We then made the kids strip and put their clothes in the wash and take showers (total overkill even for me but we wanted to prove a point).

After they showered and I had calmed down a bit, I hugged them both and apologized for losing my cool but explained that I just wanted to keep them and us and everyone around us safe so they need to trust us when we tell them what they can and can’t do. And emphasized yet again that we are also missing our friends—we’re not punishing them.

The whole thing was rough. And it totally sucked. But tomorrow is a new day and I’ll give myself some grace and we’ll move on. And keep a closer eye on the kids. 

So use this post to prepare yourself for if and when this happens in your house so you can avoid acting like a crazy person to your kids.

Show me your drunk face!

Since everyone was getting on the virtual event bandwagon, I did as well. I scheduled an event on Facebook called Show me your drunk face and invited just about everyone I know:

After our first week of self-distancing and homeschooling I think we’ll all need a drink or six. Come share your poison in a photo or live video!

I wasn’t sure how well it would go over but figured what the heck. So imagine my surprise when people started posting anf posting and kept posting and kept posting… It was a success! I even went live a time or two, a bunch of us did shots at the same time, and it was really fun.

What really surprised me, though, that people kept posting even after the event was over! Like days later! So, stay tuned for what happened later…

When Jami texts and asks if you’re free…

the answer is always ALWAYS yes. 殺 A gastronomic experience unrivaled… And thankfully my mom and stepdad were here so they could watch the kids!!

A quick stop at Binny’s! It’s a huuuge liquor store I’d never been to.

My aisle…getting ready for when I can actually drink one of these again. (I did get some really great looking craft margaritas that I can’t wait to try, too.)A quick stop at Binny’s!

Owen became a Boy Scout today!

Getting ready to head out to the Blue & Gold bridge ceremony.

As part of the ceremony, all the scouts had to saw a piece of wood.

There was an Arrow of Light ceremony where parents present the scout with a homemade arrow with bands of color signifying all the things the scouts have completed. Unfortunately Owen was so new to the troop that he wasn’t able to get one, so he was the only scout not up front. But then they called him up separately and gave him a really nice introduction (among other things they said what a great addition he was to the troop) and I didn’t record it because I totally wasn’t expecting it!

And then they all did the pledge.

They each got a chance to say thank you as they crossed the bridge.

Owen getting his new neckerchief and scout book.

All new Scouts!

Tubing with the fam!

We all went tubing today at Hanson Hills!! I had never done it before but I am all about NOT having to walk up the hill!! I hadn’t been inside the building in probably 25 years…plus they’ve totally updated it…so how can it still smell exactly the same?!

Tubing was so much fun…but everyone else in Grayling had the same idea and there were too many people (IMO) so we only got three runs in! It only took about 10 minutes max to ride up and go down but they’re were so many people we were waiting 15 minutes in line. (The tow rope also broke for about 15 minutes—THANKS, MARIE!—so that didn’t help.)

Katie only went down twice—she got too freaked out that she was going to come out of the tube. I could actually understand—you really got going fast and I was initially a bit freaked out. I went down once with Owen, once with Tom, and then the last trip with Tom, Owen, Doug, and Robert!

Thanks to Gramma Jean for taking pics with my phone!!

A Tom and Doug project.

As usual, we decided on a tech project halfway through our stay… Mom and David got a new TV! Which meant Tom had to pick it up in Traverse City (which was fine because he was headed that way to spend the day with Rob) and then get it all set up and hooked to the surround sound. Doug was tapped to help. The old TV went downstairs and that even older TV went to the the garage to be given away!

Owen is famous!

Get this. Tom was watching YouTube videos of the Allure and we saw Owen! And then we saw the rest of our group! The kids were totally freaking out and joking that Owen was famous now!

It starts about 6:12. After that you will see us, too, after they do the quick walk-through of the restaurant. (This is just some random persons vlog. Nothing actual Royal Caribbean sponsored.)

Our first real tree…ever.

Our first real tree since we’ve been together…and supporting the scouts! I really wanted a huge tree but we have very limited space for one. Also? There’s no way it was going in my new car—the days of hauling messy crap is over. 😂

We got rid of our fake tree last year because I was just tired of it…so we got a real tree this year! The plan was to get a fake tree in the after-Christmas clearance sales, but we might wait another year or two to see what house we have next. If we happen to get a house that will fit a 12′ tree…well, then I want a 12′ tree. 🙂 So this is the first time we have EVER had a real tree! (Note: the bummer? It doesn’t smell AT ALL.)

I AM MINIVAN FREE!!!

So we did a thing today. Pretty much unplanned, which is how we roll. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

Monday I innocently checked our Sienna loan for some reason I can’t remember and saw it was almost paid off. The mistake was telling Tom but I was excited. He knows I don’t want a minivan so he always has some cars he’s thinking of so he/we started watching hours of YouTube reviews…

Then we decided to just check them out since December is the best month to get a great deal. (Well…except for the two we were looking at since they’re both new and well rated and hard to find. 😂) So we test drove the Kia Telluride last night and it was okay, but figured we should at least see what our car was worth so we started the day by just getting a CarMax appraisal…and it was really really good (holy crap Toyotas hold their value!) so then it was off to Hyundai to at least test drive the Palisade to compare…

And the dealer agreed to price match the Carmax appraisal and then had two small incentives, plus we got a lower interest rate (2.9 to 1.9) so we said what the hell. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Our payment did go up by $25 (we had wanted it to stay exactly the same) but considering everything it wasn’t that bad. Of course I always forget insurance also goes up… 🤦🏻‍♀️ And I still hated the entire process (“let me go talk to my manager”)…but in the end, I AM MINIVAN FREE!!!!!

These are sad faces because even though I never wanted a minivan we have lots of good memories in this car…plus I’m an emotional sap. It was sad, though, to have to put everything into garbage bags—I wanted to at least go home and empty it out.

HAPPY FACES! This mama is soooo happy to be back in an SUV you don’t even know. And there are so many safety features on the Palisade I can’t even remember them all. Now to register the car in Michigan when we go home for Christmas…

Now the kids have even less technology.

I can’t believe I forgot to post about this. It happened way back on November 21.

The MOPs guest speaker today talked about the horrifying effects of media and technology on kids. We didn’t know all this stuff years ago, but the research has now been done and the results aren’t good.

So I had been feeling pretty good about how little they use media now—but after listening to her talk for an hour I decided to remove even more media/screen time from their lives. They just DON’T need it and their behavior is so much better without it.

She told a story about Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. She said the opening scene is like 2:32 long—one long scene, no cuts—and kids sit still and watch the whole thing. Then she said, watch the intro to Paw Patrol and see if you can count the number of cut scenes in it. SHE LOST COUNT. So how can we expect our kids to sit and pay attention to teachers for longer than five seconds if we’re training their brains to watch the fast-paced BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM video style? It’s impossible. And there really is no such thing as an educational app—kids can’t really learn off a cold glass screen. They need tactile learning—feeling the smoothness of the paper, hearing the pencil write on the paper, smelling the crayon. (There are very few actual educational apps and shows—like Sesame Street and Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood from the Children’s Television Workshop.)

We told the kids at dinner…explaining that it wasn’t a punishment but that people/parents/we didn’t know better at the time, but as we learn and grow and scientists do research, we learn things that may change our behavior and how we live our lives. And technology is one of those things

Overall, honestly, it wasn’t a huge change. They still get video game time (Owen) and computer time (Katie) but only on the weekend (no more during the week). They don’t get to play computer games masquerading as math or language arts apps (we have workbooks for that). No more unlimited video after video at night on YouTube before bed (they’ll get one if they’re lucky). And don’t even ASK to use the computer.

The biggest thing is that Owen loses Chromebook time (he needs it for band but unless he has specific homework, it stays closed) and a too-adult videogame (I haven’t liked it from the beginning but I didn’t fight Tom on it—but Tom now agrees). But the videogame was really killing him. Like he was crying and said he was really upset and went to his room. When he calmed down and came back I reminded him about a game he used to play that was PERFECTLY appropriate and he thought for a moment, smiled, and thanked me for thinking of it and reminding him.

And just so you don’t think it was all about the kids…we also agreed to no devices at the table. And we are all going to try to look at one another when we’re talking to each other so they can learn how to react to people and pay attention.

Oh, and we watched an episode of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood tonight. Holy crap. We weren’t quite sure what to expect—I mean, Owen hated the original Star Wars episodes after seeing the whiz bang newer versions first so I didn’t hold out much hope. But I knew both would give it a shot because they will watch ANYTHING on a TV. I think they’d watch static, frankly.🤦🏻‍♀️

So imagine our surprise when we put the first episode on and they sat and watched, totally entranced. They both loved it. They asked questions. They talked to the screen. We discussed things. WHAT?! It’s amazing.

(We’ve also started watching The Brady Bunch—and while not educational, those shows have a lot of good lessons and they love it, too.)

So I will continue to be a hard ass on this so my kids don’t turn into little terrors. And enjoy some walks down memory lane…

Happy Friendsgiving!

Tom did a thing. (A brined, spatchcocked, and smoked turkey.)

A family photo before we left…

Dinner prep was fun. I got to make gravy. 😄 I didn’t take any pics of the rest off the food but it was all yummy.

A real non-selfie family photo since we had someone who could take the photo for us!

Decorating turkey cookie pieces.

Snuggling with Katie and Anna’s brother’s dog, who I nicknamed Peanut because he was all of maybe 2#, tops.

He cuddled in my lap for at least two hours. No, I don’t want a Chihuahua.
