Today’s life tip brought to you by me and Lake County 911.

OOPSIES!

Guys, you should really learn what cell phone button presses set off the emergency contact/911 sequence. (FYI, for iPhones you rapidly press the top or side button five times.)

I had my phone wrapped in my leggings waistband and wanted to turn the volume down without unwrapping it… Nothing was happening and then I heard a weird loud noise I’d never heard. I quickly unwrapped my phone to see my phone dialing 911. I hung up (wasn’t sure if it had connected yet) and then had to stop my phone from dialing my emergency contacts.

THEN I had to answer a callback from Lake County 911 checking if everything was okay.

I explained what had happened and told her I was mortified. 😣 They were nice about it.

Upshot? Lake County 911 is on the ball.

Roar Run, year 2

Of course, yesterday was the most gorgeous fall day and today was rainy and chilly.

They had a bunch of activities in the gym. Katie is a hula hoop rock star.

And they both had fun on these. Katie called them feet puppets. 🙂 Tom and I got a good laugh out of that one.

Owen actually looked like a serious runner.

Katie did well this year, too—she knew she couldn’t sit on Tom’s shoulders at all. And she wanted to beat Sophia (since Sophia can’t in right before her last year)… And she did!

Tom and Katie actually both qualified for a medal, but we didn’t want to wait around 1.5 hours until the end so they’ll just get them at school eventually. They all did awesome!!

First ever grandparent camp!!

Since we live so close to family now…and the kids are getting older and more self-sufficient, we thought it was time to let them stay for a long visit with the grandparents! As scheduling happened to work out, we went to Michigan for our family Christmas and then left the kids there…and then Gramma Jean and Grandpa David would drive up to meet Papa and Grannie Lin to hand off the kids…and then we’d eventually drive up to the UP to pick them up. They would be gone a total of 19 days, 12 of which they were completely without us. Needless to say we were all looking forward to it…the grandparents were excited about having the kids, the kids were excited about fun with the grandparents, and we were excited to have some alone time and general peace and quiet.

Here are the pics from some of the adventures they had with Gramma Jean and Grandpa David!

Lake Margarethe – of course they made fast friends with other kids who where there!

Roscommon Zoo

One of my happy places.

Being in the military has its ups and downs, pros and cons… This move has had its share of cons, but the one definite bonus is that we are close enough to home to visit easily—and this weekend we had a spur of the moment trip home. I hate that we only got about 13 hours to spend at my childhood home (and that includes sleep!) but it’s 13 hours in one of my happy places.

Owen’s first soccer game at the park district!

The wintery weather didn’t make for a very nice day (we were in winter coats, hats, and gloves) but everyone was excited!

Katie kept busy waiting for the game to start.

Unfortunately, I had a bit of a bad start as I decided to take a shortcut across a little grassy area to go look at a park map…and I ended up in inches deep swampy muck. I bet you can imagine how wonderful that felt in 35 weather not 15 minutes into our 1.5 hour stay.

Much to our surprise (honestly), Owen scored TWO goals!! Part of it was due to him getting better…but (honestly) part of it was due to the other team not being quite as good. But it was super exciting—and they ended up winning (I think) 4-1!

Owen really needs a haircut but he has so far refused.

Owen played football today!

Well, he took part in a youth football league practice session at Northwestern University with the coaches of the league.

He has never played football before so it was totally new but he did really well. He wasn’t shy at all with the whole field of kids and immediately went up to them and started playing.

Post-football dinner with Dad.

Katie’s soccer camp

She thinks she wants to play soccer again but she really has no idea what she’s doing. (She did play one season but never really had any good instruction.) So we enrolled her in a five-week beginning level class at the rec center and we’ll see how it goes.

This is how she played goalie—she had NO idea. She’d just watch the ball roll by into the goal.

Owen’s first MSU game!

They’ve had tickets for months and have been getting more and more excited… Unfortunately it was coooold and required many layers but that didn’t hamper the excitement. 🙂

It was an exciting game, but unfortunately the outcome was an MSU loss in triple overtime… They ended their outing at Culver’s for dinner.

Owen’s last archery session of his beginner class!

Papa and Grannie really wanted to see Owen shoot, so we were happy they were here for his last class. (They are so proud of him that they actually paid for his next level class!) We all got to soot, as well! Papa was the best of the three of us and we got to hear all about his very dangerous bow and arrow escapades when he was a kid! 🙂

Our first successful Roar Run!

The Roar Run is a PTA-Sponsored fundraising event in its sixth year. We are hoping it’s on a weekend next year—it’s a bit difficult getting there to enjoy the other events when the kids don’t get home until 4.

Katie is becoming a master hula hooper!

Stretching before the race!

We were watching the relay races and Katie wanted to try the wheelbarrow.

Neighbors!

Nine minutes until race time!

The group of neighbor kids running together! (Tom was taking the pic down at the fun run starting line.)

Katie came in a minute or so behind Sophia—but we had seen her on daddy’s shoulders for a bit!!

And the same pic close up as she crossed the finish line!

More neighbors!

Love a family photo!

Stacey and Lorenzo, Sophia and Enzo

And I had to try a selfie. It’s a bit more difficult with six people!

We had the results as they were happening and these were the finals (Katie missed a medal by one place—Sophia came in #3):

Owen and mom shoot arrows!

Practicing their positioning and stance.

During the last five minutes of class the parents were invited to shoot. Owen immediately wanted me to try and I totally wanted to! I initially grabbed and held the bow the wrong way and Owen helped me out. As I typically do, I had beginners luck and hit the board on my very first shot…then missed the next four (but only by a smidge). It was fun!
