A day in Chicago with friends!

I honestly feel guilty being this close to Chicago and not doing stuff…but I hate all the traffic, I hate the congestion, I hate all the pedestrians who think the world revolves around them, I hate paying through the nose to park, I hate paying for an Uber so we don’t have to park somewhere else…shall I go on? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yet once in a blue moon we make plans to alleviate the guilt…so today was hanging out with out-of-town friends. But first we had to deal with this. The last mile took 20 minutes.

Waiting for our friends to arrive.

Now it’s getting worth it—peeps, drinks, and brunch at The Publican. I look frightened purely because it was difficult taking the photo. I have a margarita so I’m good.

Since Ballast Point was practically right next door, Tom had to stop (it’s one of his favorite breweries out of San Diego). So we’re all here. No margaritas, though, so I’m sitting this one out.

Then it was a quick Uber to the Wendella docks for a Lake & River Architecture Tour (with drinks!). Honestly I was hesitant about this because we’d already done the Architecture Tour when we went last year, but if you recall it was so hot that we stayed in the A/C and drank and only saw the bottom half of the buildings. The weather today was much better so we figured we’d get to see all the buildings…

We were at the very front of the line so scoped out what seats we wanted—and there were six right in front that were perfect. And we got them! And drinks, of course. 🙂

Doing a thing I’ve never done before—we’re in a lock!! (Plus something I do all the time–there’s a margarita just out of frame.)

Then we went out into Lake Michigan—something or last tour didn’t do so that was cool. We might also have gotten splashed just a bit—the water was rough and we were at the front of the boat.

Then it was dinner and drinks at Beacon Tavern (right off the docks). Sooooo much good food and amazing company…

So a day in Chicago is DEFINITELY not something we want to do all the time but sometimes it’s DEFINITELY worth it.

Recognize anyone?!

😳😳 OMG!!! SQWEEEEE!!! Look at who made it into one of the product collages for our newly-launched gloss?! 🍇🍇 It’s not an official corporate photo, but we all use these collages so it’s kind of blowing my mind. 🤯🤯

I am quite regretting my decision to not wear mascara in that pic, though (but to be fair, I didn’t take the pic knowing it would be in a collage—it was a simple makeup day).

When your bestie decides she needs Lipsense.

So this is what happens when your bestie FINALLY comes to her senses and realizes she needs Lipsense in her life and she comes over to find just the right color and she’s a little picky. 😜 (Totally not judging because it also took me forever to find my perfect color, and I didn’t have anyone with this big of a selection to help me out so it took way longer than an hour.)

After all these colors, she ended up loving a combo of Cappuccino and Giddy Up with either Orchid or Grape gloss. She might also have gotten sucked into the Smoked Topaz on your brows train… GORGEOUS!!

Small plates my ass!!

The kids are gone so we’re hitting all the places we’ve been wanting to try. The menu at The Vine – Martini & Wine Bar said “small plates” so we ordered four dishes: Elote fritters, mushroom aroncini, calamari, and poutine tots.

Think this is enough food? Cripes. We felt like we needed to explain to the other tables that it was our first time and we had no idea.

But, yay, Tuesday is $5 margaritas!! 🙌🙌

I have questions.

I couldn’t get a good enough look. My best guess is they just kept getting new themed stickers and added them. Or they did their entire extended family? I really want to say the dad is military (I think I see a cover on one the figures) and there are three sets of 6. So a family of six? I queried on Facebook and a grandma gave me a good idea:

I think they are grandparents and it starts with them and their kids and their kids grown up with their own children….etc. That’s my theory now that I am in that grandmother kingdom.

Good times, elementary school.

The merry-go-round (nowadays probably better known as a spinning metal death trap) was one of the best pieces of playground equipment ever.

My favorite thing to do? Sit on the bars facing forward with my legs hooked around the sides so you could lean back once it got spinning and fling your arms out and feel the breeze in your hair. Of course you had to be careful that no one was standing next to it otherwise you’d hit them…and you had to have some body strength to keep your body vertical enough so that you didn’t flip down and bang your head on the bottom…

If you were fast enough when recess started you would get there first and not have to get off for the whole 20 minutes. If you had a best friend you could work together and take turns.

Whenever we are driving around and see a playground I look for a merry-go-round like this, but of course everything these days is plastic. You do find merry-go-rounds now and again, but nothing like this and it makes me sad. But elementary school, man, those were the times.

Family traditions…and cooties!

NO, NOT THAT COOTIES. READ ON.

This is the extra blog post I mentioned earlier.

One thing I love about our family is our traditions. Today we’ve spent the day together celebrating Christmas in July—something we started about six years ago when we got tired of the hustle and bustle during December.

  • We eat lots of food (Aunt Marilyn always brings german potato salad, Lisa T brings a corn salad, Lori brings taco salad, Aunt Marge brings shrimp and pizza lasagna, and there’s lots of grilling of brats, burgers and ribs—we all have meat sweats by late afternoon since we just can’t stop eating).
  • We do a white elephant gift exchange—and without fail, one of the women somehow ends up with a tool and ends up just giving it away after trading is over.
  • We take a family photo—and everyone gives my mom grief—but because of her, we have family photos dating back a loooong time. And I take a cousin photo.
  • Depending on the location, there’s a fishing contest or turtle races or both, there are lawn games, sometimes there are fireworks and a campfire and s’mores.
  • There’s always cards (euchre, of course, since we’re midwest people).
  • And eventually a game of Cooties breaks out and we relive the best stories from the glory days when we all played Cooties for a week when we camped together (Greg was a master from a young age, and today he proved he still has it).

So we all got to wondering…is our family the only one that plays Cooties? Do you have any idea what Cooties even is? I asked on Facebook and predicted 90% would have no idea, and I was dead on. If you don’t count the people directly associated with our family, 91% of the people didn’t know what I was talking about…and most of them thought I was talking about the box game Cootie. (To be honest, I totally forgot the box game was even a thing when I initially posted!!)

cootie game

So what IS our cooties? I went to Google to see if I could find a succinct definition and I really couldn’t find anything. What? Google failed me? Eventually I found this, which is the basis of our game:

It’s an infection tag game, whereby one person has the cooties and must try to pass it on to someone else. You can’t get the cooties if your fingers are crossed. So if you are the one with cooties, you must catch someone who isn’t paying attention (hence my fingers crossed in the photo). There are lots of good stories, but the best one (and is the aforementioned one with my cousin Greg), is as follows.

We were all packing up and rolling out after a week of camping (pretty sure it was the annual trip to Harrisville). I don’t know how old I was, but it was before my parents divorced, so it was before 4th grade—I’d guess I was maybe 7 or 8? We were in the Oldsmobile ’88 pulling our popup camper, slowly driving out towards the campground exit when we see Greg (who is 4 years older than me, so right about pre-teen) FLAT OUT RUNNING towards us waving his arms crazily. Of course we stopped, assuming we had forgotten something or there was some other emergency (he had cut through the woods to get to us). My mom rolled down her window (was it my mom? how is this part hazy?) and Greg came right up to the car, reached out, and smacked her arm while yelling COOTIES! And there was much laughter on his part and much confusion and damnation on our part!! We had been sooooo close to escaping! And obviously cooties were the last thing on our minds. Well played, Greg, well played. The fact that we’re still talking about it almost 40 years later really says something.

Len Christmas in July, Year 6

I’m not sure we have enough crap for one day.

See? It really is Christmas!

When you learn awesome party tricks from your elders: Tequila-infused watermelon with salted limes. Aunt Rose, you rock!

The annual cousin lineup, by age: 7, 10½, 11, 12 (almost 13), 14 (almost 15).

And Nick is pulling away, which is okay since he is almost five years older!!

Adding older cousin Alex (17) to the mix (Jess was working).

I introduced Lisa to a few new products.

Unfortunately, it was a stormy day so we had to dodge rain and lightning for most of the afternoon…but, on the plus side, it wasn’t 100° with 95% humidity! My hair kinda grew throughout the day.

There was a fishing contest… Aubrey is a Master Fisher so she helped my kids. I was surprised at how long they kept at it! (Of course Tom was out there, too.)

Darrell caught the biggest one:

And then this happened…

Someone started the cooties!! (I think that will be a blog post in itself!) So for the last two hours we all had to keep our fingers crossed! We reminisced about the old days and learned Greg still has what it takes!

The big bummer? Lisa and Alex left pretty early and with the rain throwing things off, we totally forgot to take our group photo!

Cheers, it’s vacation, y’all!

I love coming home to visit. Hubby and I leave the kids with Gramma and Grampa and we hit all the local shops we love—shout out to Tip’n the Mitten which is always our first stop (I love me some 100% Michigan-made products) and then it was the AuSable Artisan Village (where my mom used to sell her Pysanky…and I have bought many things) and then some fireworks (since they’re not legal where we live)… and then, last but not least, Paddle Hard Brewing where I enjoyed two strawberry margaritas that made me SUPER happy and a little buzzed.

Do you have places you have to visit when you go home?

This is about where we’re at already today.

We’ve already reached this point today because we’re trying to pack for a vacation. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤯

They’re whining that they can’t find stuff…but they won’t put their dirty clothes in the hamper, won’t put their clean clothes away, or do their laundry. And even though I’ve asked 21 times, the same crap is still on the floor and I’m still stepping on it and over it.

I just keep thinking about the light at the end of the tunnel…the kids will be gone for TWO WEEKS with their grandparents. 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Going outside my (shadow) box!

Now, if y’all know me, I don’t really do shadows. (Frankly I kind of suck.) But I watched an amazing SeneSister do this eye look yesterday and she is so fun and genuine (sidenote I totally want to be her new bestie) that I was compelled to comment. When I said if I tried this look I’d end up looking like I have two black eyes…she challenged me. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED, Joyanne Boggs!!

I then totally fangirled over her and she graciously agreed to come to my group and do a demo for us (coming soon)!! But first today. Today I attempted this (minus the fake lashes because a girl can only do so much) and Joy had faith and showed up for emotional (and technical) support. And guys? It was a blast and I didn’t totally suck!

There was an unexplained Lapis Glitter incident 🤨 😂 plus I learned I still really need practice (I’m definitely not at her level!)…but overall, I’m really proud of myself for stepping outside my box!! #senesistersrock

It’s all clutter and chaos.

I love a clean house. Love love love. It’s actually relaxing and lowers my stress level and makes everything in life just that much better…but unfortunately I don’t have the energy to do it, let alone the energy AND patience required to get the kids to do their fair share. (You’ve heard the expression herding cats, right? It’s legit.)

So we live with clutter and chaos and hope for a somewhat picked up house every few weeks when we have friends over. 😂

What state is your house normally in?
