So, Owen loved opening presents, but usually didn’t seem too thrilled with the actual item. But I knew he’d get to them eventually…so it’s fun to see what he’ll bring out of the toy room next.
Just now, he came out with three new packages of Cars cars that he opened from papa and Grannie Lin last night. 🙂
Well this morning was…not quite what I expected. I thought Owen would wake up and be super excited about Santa…but all he wanted to do was play his Xbox game. 🙁
We excitedly said “Owen, who came to visit last night?” and in the most quiet and bored voice simply said “Santa.” Not quite the response I expected. About 20 minutes later we convinced him it was time to check out what Santa left—and he was a bit more enthusiastic. Here we are coming down the stairs to find the stockings…
And then it was off to see the presents…where he got upset because Santa ate “his” (Owen’s) cookies—even though Owen didn’t want any himself last night or this morning—and then back to happy again remembering there were presents to open.
Of course, he was happy to pose with all the presents:
And smiled with one when I asked him to:
And enjoyed playing with some of the things:
But honestly, he seemed less than thrilled with most of his stuff (though I guess to be fair, it’s hard to get excited about clothes or games when they’re in a box). I mean, he enjoyed opening them (which I guess is good enough, right?) but then they were pretty much immediately tossed aside and it was on to the next present. (Yes, I know he’s three. But it was just such a change from last year when he wanted to play with everything as he opened it). He did like a few things (meaning he expressed some awe over them—like both new Xbox Lego games, his Cars cars, and his Indiana Jones minifigs)…but the biggest hit wasn’t even from us or Santa—it was a bug vacuum and fishing rod (that you put your iPhone in to pretend fish) from Tom’s mom that were both immediately turned into guns. And an activity box that was for Katie.
I guess I was expecting too much from a 3yo, right?
And less than an hour later, he was already done playing with everything new and wanted to play the stupid xbox game I had hoped would be forgotten about with the appearance of two new games. 🙁 I feel bad that I’m a little upset, but I just keep telling myself it’s not a big deal, it’s not a big deal, it’s not a big deal because I know he’ll eventually play with everything and like the games, etc…but it was just a bit disappointing because it wasn’t what I envisioned (and you think by now I’d know better).
There were lots of smiles and fun moments, though. 🙂
We Skyped with Grandma Marsha and Uncle Rob while Owen opened the presents they sent and some from Santa and mom and dad.
We had labeled everything with big name tags because Owen knows his name, so with just about every package he picked up he said “O-W-E-N spells me—Owen” and it was completely adorable. So then it was funny when we caught him opening a package for me and we said “Owen, is that yours?” YES! “Owen, whose name is on the label?” He looks for the label, sees it’s not Owen and immediately says “I’m sorry! So so sorry!” 🙂
Katie enjoyed the tags on one of her gifts:
And Charlie enjoyed a box in the middle of the floor—and watching everything from her perch:
And he was excited about this Captain America figure…
…until Tom pressed the button to make it speak and it freaked Owen out:
And he liked his trampoline…for about 15 seconds. (That was free so it may end up being gifted elsewhere because we don’t really have room for it if he’s not loving it.)
So overall I’d say it was a success, even if it didn’t go quite as we planned.
We were out on a walk so Owen could drive his car (he likes the street more than the driveway/yard, but obviously can’t go alone)…when what do we see parked in the cul-de-sac?? Owen was SO excited!!
We got Owen’s police car out today with the hopes that he’d like driving it since it’s been awhile. And he did! I had Katie in the stroller walking up and down the street in front of our house while Owen drove along with us.
It was actually a little slow, so we had a “pit stop” so Tom could remove the speed regulator—now Owen can zip along at a 4mph clip! He was SO excited to be able to go fast!
Now we just have to get him to understand he has to stay close to us and LISTEN to us when we yell at him to stop!
Here is the next outfit from my past that Katie got to wear…though, unfortunately, I waited a bit too long and it was too small for her so she just wore it for a few pictures! (I apparently am a very bad judge of sizes—and it’s a homemade outfit so there is no sizing listed—and of course Gramma Jean has no memory of what age I wore it!)
You can see how Owen likes to interfere with the photo shoot. 🙂
Owen seemed to be doing better after his nap and was enjoying playing games with daddy. His temp was still hovering around 100 so we decided to wait and medicate him at bedtime.
He had a light dinner of toast with peanut butter and yogurt, and things seemed fine. Then it was time for medicine…which is always a bit of a fight. It took some time and cajoling and a bit of mess, but he finally took it. And as Tom was in with him washing his hands (I did say it got messy!) he barfed up everything.
Whether it’s psychological and he hates taking the medicine so he throws up…or whether him fighting us on it riles up his stomach…or whether the medicine itself actually makes him queasy…it’s not the first time it’s happened.
Of course, his response was “I’m sad.” 🙁
After that, however, he seemed perfectly fine and was running around like normal. We did make him take more medicine (since he threw up literally 60 seconds after he finished taking the last dose, he obviously had nothing in his system) and that stayed down.
We’re hoping tomorrow goes better.
Sidenote: We reconfirmed that I deal better with poop and Tom deals better with vomit. We make a good pair. 🙂
Me: Owen, it’s time to get dressed.
Owen: NO!
Me: I thought you wanted to go shopping?
Owen: Frowning and growling. No. I’m not happy. No one can make me happy anymore.
Me: How about we play Candyland when we get home?
Owen: Without missing a beat— Ooooh, that sounds fun!
First, the board is hideous compared to the one I grew up with. I’m surprised it doesn’t cause seizures it’s so bright and busy.
Second, Owen didn’t catch on NEARLY as fast as I thought he would. Talk about frustrating.
Third, he legitimately won all the games, and every time he won he wanted me to “come to the castle” with him (the end): “WE WON! WE BOTH WON!”
Fourth, he was much more interested in playing with the pieces post-game than he was actually playing the game. The pieces were jumping around (“Boing! Boing!”), they were bad guys, they were family, and they walked all over the living room.
Owen has started hiding from Frank, the big combine in Cars, when he chases after Mater and Lightning. I tried to hide behind my hands and he said “No! Hide behind the pillow!”
Owen asked me to play pancakes. Yes, that’s exactly what I thought—HUH?
Me: We don’t have any pancakes.
Owen: Play pancakes.
Me: Do you want me to read Tyler Makes Pancakes! (a favorite book of his)?
Owen: No! Play pancakes! /claps hands together/
Me: OH! PATTY CAKE!
Yes, I’ve been doing patty cake with Katie for awhile now, and obviously Owen has been paying attention.
Skyping with Grandma, Owen is showing her all of his robots.
Then he decided to take Grandma Marsha on a walkabout. It was hilarious, because he doesn’t quite grasp what she can and can’t see and was in his dark playroom showing her a puzzle that makes noise when you turn the lights off.
Yes, those are foam crayons he’s holding (that go to one of his puzzles). But Team Umizoomi (one of his favorite cartoons) has main characters that are—yes, you guessed it—pink, blue, and green.
Lately Owen has enjoyed playing with his building blocks and wants you to come build with him.
He built this dragon…
After his nap, it was back to building…and I attempted a totem pole—and it was obviously good enough because he guessed it! Then I just recorded him playing (yes, it’s a little long, but it’s mostly for the grandparents). 🙂
Then I built Owen a robot and he looked at it and said “He’s wearing a diaper!”
Owen is a riot when he’s playing his Xbox Lego Indiana Jones game. Tom showed him some basics, but otherwise he learns how to do stuff on his own (trial and error, but still impressive). But what’s funny is listening to him while he plays—if he can’t figure something out, it’s a constant stream of “Dad? Dad? Dad? Dad? I need your help.”
Today we’ve also heard:
I did it! I got the spider!
Watch out, bad guys!
Hey, stop!
Uh oh.
Wow! Did you see that?
Remember? Mom? Remember?
I found coins! Cool!
It’s a gold coin and a blue coin. Amazing!
Look! Orange guys. Go and get them!
Mom, dad…something is happening.
Most of the time Tom and I just look at each other and crack up.
Well apparently Owen is pooping in the potty but refuses to admit it, even when we’re both looking at it. It’s not full poops, but rather the big squished pieces that basically fall out from between his cheeks…but they’re in the toilet so I’m happy! But I am flummoxed as to why he won’t admit it. He actually vehemently denies it (telling me “You’re not happy!” even though I tell him I’m very happy)…until I say we can go pick a toy. 😐
