Oh boy…OCD?

Owen just got out of bed saying “Something’s wrong! Daddy! Come here! Something’s wrong!” So Tom follows him and Owen crawls back up in bed and points at his sheets that aren’t quite pulled taut. Like this (but this is our bed):

And this isn’t the first time he’s been concerned with something like this (and not just at bedtime). It’s been a flipped up corner of carpet, a blanket askew, a closet door half opened…

A little sleeping in—thankfully.

Well…Owen slept until 7:40 (a miracle in itself)! Then after he pottied I told him that Tom left him a surprise in the living room. He came running back: “I looked in the living room and there is no surprise!” I asked if daddy left the game on for him and his eyes got wide and he said YES! so I shooed him away saying GO PLAY! And then I got about another hour of sleep before Katie was making noise at 8:30!

Stinkers—both of them.

It started last night at about 9:45 when we looked on the monitor and saw that Katie had her legs sticking through the crib slats…even though we have a breathable bumper on it. (It’s blurry since it was taken in total darkness so the camera couldn’t focus.)

So I held the light while Tom unstuck her legs and we thought that was that.

Until about 2am when her loud screeching/whining woke us up. I checked the monitor and it looked like she had one leg sticking out again…but then she was quiet so we just left her and went back to sleep. About 3:30 she screeched again… I check the monitor…legs sticking out…not quieting down…not quieting down…okay, settling down…try to get back to sleep. SCREECH! Now she was flailing about on her stomach in her “okay I’m ready to get up” phase. Ugh.

So Tom went and got a bottle while I shut Owen’s door (because Katie was still making a racket). While I was feeding her, I heard a door shut, so thought Tom was just starting his day a little early and taking a shower. Except, no…as I was leaving Katie’s room, I saw that Owen’s door was open again!! Which means the little booger got out of bed in the 15 minutes I was in with Katie (and I heard his door opening, not our door shutting). STINKER!

By this time it’s 4:15 and neither of us can get back to sleep, though we tried. Tom got up at 4:30 and I wrote this blog post. Hopefully I’ll be able to catch maybe two more hours before Owen gets up…

GREAT JOB, OWEN!

So, I’ve forgotten to mention that Owen has been wearing underwear—not pull-ups—during naps and staying dry (which earns him 15 minutes!). Yay! We also tell him that any time he has to pee, he can get out of bed…though he never has.

So after about a week of that, we asked if he wanted to try underwear at night (instead of pull-ups) and he said yes! And so far…he’s had all dry mornings!! So now we really only use pull-ups if we’re running lots of errands or might be in the car for a long time…but even then, we ask him what he wants to wear and he usually says underwear!

So this is all leading up to today, when—during his nap—he actually woke up, went to the bathroom to pee—then went back to bed!!!! YAY OWEN!!! A FIRST!!

Bedtime light

Thanks papa and grannie!

He wasn’t terribly interested in it when he opened it…got a little interested when he saw it in action…carried it around but refused to put it on…until bedtime when he HAD to have it! Fast forward 15 minutes and he was out of bed so I went in there and he didn’t want it on anymore and HAD to give it to me (versus just putting it on his dresser).

I’m sure it will get lots of use in the future.

Rollin’ rollin’ rollin’!

Katie has started rolling over! It started a day or so ago when she was on her belly when we got her up in the morning—one day happy, one day screaming (when she can’t flip back over). Owen did the same exact thing but got over it in a few days.

So last night we put her to bed—minus the swaddle so she’d have use of her arms to flip herself over if necessary—and hoped for the best. I was just a bit nervous because I was watching her sleep on her stomach—which I know is okay (she’s napped that way before) but it’s still a little nerve wracking thinking about it being the whole night. But it was cute (though we’ve got to get the video camera closer to her to get better pictures like we got with Owen!).

And then tonight I finally caught her actually rolling over!

It’s going to be a long day.

My mom-hearing kept me on alert most of the night…Owen has been frequently getting up/whining in the middle of the night, and 2/3 of the time I end up going to his room to resettle him (Sunday night was 10:45, 12:15, and 4:00) so last night I was expecting it—especially with his yucky eye—so every little sound woke me up. Most of them were actually Tom snoring or his nose whistling, but mom hearing apparently can’t discern that too well from a half-asleep state, which then requires me to wake myself up more to REALLY listen. 😐 Then Tom’s alarm went off at 4:30 and I haven’t been able to fall back to sleep…

I think I’d be better off if I shut our door and just didn’t hear anything…except then I’d feel bad missing Owen if he was having issues. 🙁 (Oh, and his door stays open now because he DOES NOT want it closed. So I’m hearing more of his normal nighttime noises anyway…)

A nap schedule!

I think Katie is finally on a nap schedule instead of taking little catnaps all day! She takes anywhere from a 2-4 hour nap at about 9:30, a 1-2ish hour nap in the afternoon around 3 or 4, then goes to bed around 8 and then sleeps until 7. YAY!

(I hope I’m not jinxing myself by writing this.)

Some nights (like tonight) she was in bed before 8 even! When she starts screaming and refusing to eat, we break out the zippered swaddle and she calms right down. Some nights I have to swing her in my arms (if she’s really worked up) but most nights we can just put her in her crib while she’s still awake and she falls asleep peacefully.

She’s SUCH a good baby!

Threenager short term memory

So Katie was sleeping in our room in her swing. We don’t tiptoe around, but we do shut the door and keep Owen out because he just can’t seem to be quiet even when he’s trying. But today he practically begged to go in and I was in there putting clothes away (silently!), so I said he could, but he had to be super quiet and stay away from her. So what does he do? Not 10 seconds after being in the bedroom, walks right over to her and starts messing with a pile of hangers (his “bows and arrows”) and wakes her up.

OMG. You just want to scream WHAT DID YOU NOT UNDERSTAND ABOUT WHAT I TOLD YOU 15 SECONDS AGO?

What a night. And morning.

I went to bed at midnight. Owen was up at 3 (for no real reason that I could tell). Then Tom was snoring, Owen got up again at 3:30 and 4, Tom was still snoring so when Owen got up again at 4:30, I went in to sleep with him (not good sleep, but at least it was quiet). Then Tom got up about 5a and STARTED RIPPING OUT THE KITCHEN SINK. But I didn’t know that’s what he was doing until I went down at 6 to ask what the hell he was doing that was so noisy. I finally got back to sleep in my own bed about 6:30. Then I got up at 8…so I’ve basically had four hours of sleep. 😐 But I had a nice new sink and faucet installed by 8am.

A little cat nap

We’ve been letting Owen skip his nap so he’ll fall asleep faster at night—sometimes he’s still up (in his bed, but awake) at 9:30-10:00—and for the most part it’s been fine. But today—especially after playing in the pool, I’m sure—he took a little catnap while watching the State game with daddy. It was soooo cute of course I had to take a picture.

20121020-193026.jpg

And it was a true catnap—it couldn’t have been longer than 10 minutes.

Owen, why are you up so early?

I happened to be up really early this morning—it was one of those times I woke up at 4 and couldn’t fall back asleep. I turned on Owen’s monitor about 6:15 and I saw (what we joke are) his rat eyes so I knew he was up. I waited a bit, hoping he’d fall back asleep. When he didn’t, I went in.

Me: Owen, why are you up so early?
Owen: My nose is stuck.

Hee.
