The last day of 1st and 4th!

This is what happens when you give your 10yo the phone to try and take a pic on their last day of school. 😂

It looks like all smiles and laughs but we parents all know the day is bittersweet as we’re reminded just how quickly time passes and how lightning fast they are growing up. Weren’t they just in diapers a few months ago? Weren’t they just getting on the bus for the first time? Before you know it they’ll be graduating and moving out and getting married. 😭

These are the feelings I’m going to try and remember this summer when they are making me crazy with 1000 snack requests and whines of “I’m bored.” And I’m going to try and take in each moment and relish the fact they’re still actually little kids. 🥰

First and last days of school. The district actually has three more days due to snow days but we had a family reunion vacation planned for months so today is it for them. We also had a Katie outfit change with lots of drama because she’s ALMOST SEVEN and everything is filled with drama. 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

The Buddy Project

Works by young artists and even younger artists were on display during the Buddy Project portion of the Live Arts event held Friday at Warren Township High School’s Almond Campus. Woodland Elementary East had 72 students participate in the event where they drew somebody or something helping someone. Selected drawings were given to high school art students to recreate using drawing, painting, digital image or sculpture. Not only were the works side-by-side but the artists were able to meet one another for the first time and high school artists give their art work to their younger counterparts.

Katie’s superhero drawing was selected so we all went to see the display!

Katie got a ROAR Kid Award!

ROAR stands for:

  • Be Respectful
  • Take Ownership
  • Be Accepting
  • Be Ready

Her roar:

She was going to get to walk in to the Friday assembly with all the ROAR winners…so we all went to see her! Tom surprised her as he had told her he couldn’t make it.

The picture in the front vestibule of the school:

This was the best pic I got as she walked in.

Pics with Wiley after!

Parent Teacher conferences

Both kids had student-led conferences. Owen needs to work on his presentation skills and info presented as his answers were like:

What are you good at?
Everything.

What is your goal?
To be the best at everything I do.

What do I need to work on?
Nuttin

I’m pretty sure he’s trying to be funny…but we talked to his teacher and she said she had zero complaints or worries about him. He listens, pays attention, doesn’t get distracted, has lots of friends…

Katie is doing great, too. She filled out her self-evaluation that she didn’t like math, spelling, or reading—which both us and the teacher thought odd since she’s great at all three. You could even see her demeanor change when talking about it. Her teacher even asked where the other Katie was. It’s so frustrating. She obviously knows, for example, her math facts (tests show it). But at home when she’s doing homework she flails when trying to answer 7+4 or 12-3 and gives us ridiculous answers like “I DON’T KNOW. 50?”

She also showed us her Kindness Quit square that was hanging in the main hallway.

Her teacher said she’s doing very well and is very smart and helpful. We just have to figure out the math and reading thing.

Double wins at bingo!

Tonight was the school bingo event and we had a blast!

We invited friends, ate pizza and Bundt cakes for dinner, and Katie won two bingos!! One was even a red ticket which means she got to pick from the BIG gifts.

And look what we got…

A huge Bundt cake (which happened to be Confetti, her favorite flavor!) and a year’s supply of bundlets (one per month)!! WOOHOO!! Then she picked the loom bracelet for her second prize!!!

Goodie bag helper!

I volunteered to bring the goodie bags for Katie’s holiday party. I figured I hate all the cheap crap that comes home that just ends up as clutter so I’d make fun bags. It was harder then I thought, because (long story) we couldn’t do food and it’s expensive to fill 19 bags. I think the class has money for these things but I don’t mind spending some money. So I ended up doing a pencil, a tube of glitter glue, an emoji tattoo, a crazy straw, a color-changing straw, and a glow stick bracelet. Katie helped me pack the bags!

Shopping with Mrs. Glenn!

Katie desperately wanted to go shopping with her teacher tonight for “Shopping with the Educators” at Target. To see just how serious she was, I told her she had to spend her own money—and she agreed instantly. So of course I matched her money and had a ball watching her shop with her teacher and a handful of classmates for the local holiday food drive. She loved shopping, ringing everything up, and loading it on the school bus. 💕 Mrs. Glenn is completely awesome and did an amazing job corralling a large handful of kids into buying what they needed.

Barn dancing!

Owen’s music class is learning barn dancing and parents were allowed to come watch! So of course I took advantage!

The whole thing was a hot mess from start to finish—you can imagine how much fourth graders really want to be dancing, right? That said, Owen did well and didn’t screw around too much (especially compared to other boys, some of which I wanted to throttle).

All I know is those teachers DO NOT get paid enough.

Back to school beach party

Owens school had a beach party and Tom was working late so Katie had to come with us.

This is Wiley, the district mascot.

Beach volleyball. We were the first ones there so it was just Owen, Katie, and a teacher. They had a blast!

Katie did the limbo about 10 times but she’s never ask for it to be lowered.

We also spent time at the floor hockey station (pool bottles as sticks and blow up balls as pucks), the dance party, and origami (which kicked my butt). Friends of ours were also there so Owen was running around with them. After, we took the kids to Culver’s. 🙂

First day of 4th and 1st grades!

I tried to get pics on the front porch but the lighting just wasn’t right (well, the lighting was good but it was too bright and they wanted to squint).

So we tried elsewhere, but it still wasn’t right…and Katie was cold.

First day of 4th grade. What?! So serious.

Okay, a tiny smile.

Owen and Xavier are the only two at their bus stop at 7:45. Yes, 7:45AM. Needless to say this is the ONLY day I will be going with him. 🙂

Katie’s turn…in her annual T-shirt pictures.

We found the perfect lighting! She was pointing to geese flying overhead.

First day of 1st grade. I can’t even with this outfit and the shoes.

With a backpack almost as big as she is!

At the bus stop with Linkin and Nate (Sophia will be there, too, but she was parent drop off today).

My happy face!!

And later on Facebook I found these pics of how the elementary students were welcomed to school. How cool.

PTA playdate at the new playground

Katie’s school (Owen’s old school) got new playground equipment so the PTA had a playdate there. They do this playdate every year before school starts so hopefully the kids can find other people in their grade and make friends before school starts (each grade wears a different color shirt).

We ran into friends right when we got there…

And then I made a friend, too! It was really hot so I eventually sat on the bench next to another mom and we started chatting and just totally hit it off! We had lots in common (she just moved here, she’s an editor/graphic designer, we have the same sense of humor) and our boys hit it off, too (she has twin fifth graders). I was super excited to say the least.

Last day of school!

Last day of kindergarten and third grade!! 😳 and 😭

Owen agreed to let us walk him to the bus stop since it was the last day of school.

Katie’s turn:

My last day of freedom!

Papa and grannie bought the kids balloons to celebrate when they got off the bus!

Field day with Owen!

Amazingly, Owen wanted me to volunteer for field day…so I jumped at it! The original Field Day got postponed due to rain—it had stormed the night before and the fields were under water so they postponed it a day. It was a beautiful day—but the fields were still a little wet. They had changed up how they did field day, so instead of actually having to run some of the events, we just got to follow along with the class and kind of help out here and there. It was perfect!

Owen’s Open House

Owen got to show is a bunch of stuff they’ve been working on…

But first a photobomb.

I am Owen.
Sneaky, kind, helpful
Child of Tom and Jen
Who loves video games
Who needs family and money
Who feels happy
Who gives help
Who fears being alone
Who would like to be a gamer.
I am Owen.

They did a unit on the Oregon Trail.

Look at how little he looked at the start of the year?!

Lunch with Katie!

Katie had been wanting us to come eat lunch with her all year but it’s harder to do here because the school wants 24-hour notice!! Plus Tom is rarely off during the day—and if he is, it’s last-minute. But since he was going to be off for Owen’s Meet the Principal, we decided to kill two birds with one stone. I made sure to ask the teacher over a week in advance and she said she’d let the office know.

Fast forward to walking in and…we were not on the approved lunch list. WHAT?! Let’s just say it was a tense few minutes as the front office staff conferred with the principal to see if we could come in. They even called Katie’s teacher to confirm and she obviously told them yes and she had forgotten to forward my email. The assistant principal eventually came out and told us that our daughter shouldn’t be punished because the adults couldn’t get their crap together… So then it was off to the lunchroom with 100 kindergartners. YIKES!

When Katie saw us walk in she got all shy and red-faced! It took her a minute to get excited about us being there.

Visiting Owen’s new school!

Fourth grade here means a new school—Intermediate (grades 4-6). This morning was a Coffee with the Principal and we got a tour of the school. It’s another huge school with room for 2100 students (I think they said) but the school will only be at around 1700. Yikes. While this school does have an East and West side (just for directional sake because it’s so large), the kids are not actually split into East and West like they were in Elementary. The downside? He has to get on the bus around 7:40am.

Bingo night at a new school!

Some background. I was at a PTO meeting awhile back (last year) and they were taking about potential fundraisers and I asked if they’d ever done a bingo night (our favorite event at Halley). They hadn’t, so I gave them the basics, then contacted the Halley PTA for their info so I could pass it on. They were happy to have the head start, and I assumed they’d contact me when they were ready to plan it so I could help…and then I forgot about it. And then at one PTO meeting about two months ago they announced a date for bingo! Well okay then!

We were excited but I honestly wasn’t expecting too much—the flier they sent home didn’t have too much information on it (and of course I was expecting something closer to what I’d given them as an example). There were no pre-paid family deals, they didn’t tell you what any of the prizes were, it said extra bingo cards were $1, it didn’t tell you how much food cost… So we figured it would be a total crap shoot.

We show up about 15 minutes early hoping it’s early enough to find a parking spot and…the lot was basically empty. Oh boy. And there were only about 10 of us waiting outside. Right then I had this feeling it was going to be a failure and I was already feeling horrible that the idea was a bust and I should have been more proactive in helping plan it… And I was worried about everything.

But then they let us in and wow. It was game on. Organized to the Nth degree. Tons of helpers. People selling 50/50 raffle tickets. Food set up in one gym (pizza slices, popcorn, water, and bundt cakes from the delicious local bundt place). A line to pick up your free bingo card and buy more. (It was here I ran into my neighbor who was very surprised when I told her bingo was my idea. She said she’d wished she’d known! I agreed!) The second gym was completely full with tables and chairs and balloons. The bingo screen was projected on two walls (they used Google sheets to keep track of games).

There was a huuuuuge line of prizes.

Runners walking around to check bingos. (They’d give you a ticket if you won, then you’d go up to pick your prize and turn in your ticket to the desk.) Bingo chips instead of daubers.

Crazy kids at the tables. 🙂

And it was fun and lots of people were winning. We weren’t, which of course was a bummer because we were all so close so many times. And then Tom won. And then on the very last card of the night I won, too. Yay!

Before we knew it the night was over. On our way out the PTO president thanked me again for the idea. I apologized for not following up and helping organize and she said not to worry about it—she basically gave them the idea and my notes and they ran with it! Yay!

We took our picture when we got home, though you can’t really see all our spoils (magic rocks, a Woodland sweatshirt, and a gift certificate to a sub place).
