Today was the first really cold school morning—41°—so we got out his new winter coat!

Katie takes flight!
We had a MOPS get together at Flight, a trampoline park (the same one Owen went to recently for a birthday party). She LOVED it—as if there was any doubt. 🙂
There was one tiny accident at the end where another little girl slid down the trampoline and apparently ran over Katie’s finger. Both were crying but Katie was over it in about a minute. 🙂
It’s a little expensive (we had a group discount today) but we’ll definitely go back. 🙂
I never get tired of the hiding!
Love the tutu and sunglasses.
Owen decided to write Santa this morning.
That’s a board game, a skateboard, and Legos. 🙂
I clarified which board game, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t mean a real skateboard (he has a cheap 3″ toy one from a birthday party that he loves so I’m guessing that’s what he’s thinking), and any Legos will apparently do. 🙂
I’ll get him to write a REAL list soon. And hopefully nudge him in the direction of some things I already have (though the Legos won’t be a problem)!
Owen and Sauce
Owenisms 57
We were at Five Guys for dinner. After we’d been sitting there for a bit, out of nowhere:
Owen: There are only four guys.
Me & Tom: Huh? Ohhh.
Me: Five Guys is just the name of the restaurant—
Tom: It’s not how many people work here.
Owen: Oh!
Time passes. We’re all eating.
Owen: LOOK! There’s five guys now!
Owen: Where does Aladdin live?
Me: In Arabia. I show him on a map compared to where we live. It’s a different country.
Owen: So we can’t go there, right?
Me: Right.
Owen: Because we’re not country people.
Owen saw a commercial for a toy: We can go online to get that, right?
Owen: Mama, I’m sad.
Me: Why?
Owen: I miss Miss Sheryl and Mister Eddy. He’s fun and he’s weird.

Taking advantage of an empty table.
Katie was actually shy. At first.
Katie was napping when Sheryl arrived and had asked if Katie would be shy. I said NO WAY, she doesn’t have a shy bone in her body, she will be a total show off, and will warm to you immediately.
Ha.
She spent the first 45 minutes laying in the bean bag with her hands over her eyes and then when we made her get up, this is what she did:
Then she started to come alive and be her cute self. 🙂
OMG such a cute dress!
Two tantrums
Better late than never!
She’s good with shapes and puzzles!
Coats and shoes are hard.
Parent/Teacher Conference
I was excited to go to Owen’s P/T conference because I was DYING to know how he was doing—I really really miss being able to talk to the teacher for a few minutes in the morning and/or afternoon every day like I did in pre-k.
Katie was so excited to be going to Owen’s classroom that she was RUNNING in. Owen was carrying the bag of leaved he and Katie had collected for an upcoming school project (he was sent home with a ziploc bag but they went a little crazy—this way, he didn’t have to take them on the bus).
We were early and the teacher was still getting ready so I took the chance to get a few pictures around the room!
February has the most birthdays!
This was from Owen’s journal. They write/draw in it every Monday—something that they did over the weekend. She asked me if he had gone to the school Halloween party and I said yes—and it’s EXACTLY what is depicted here: Owen with the broom that was used in one of the games to run around the cones along with candy at a table. It was SO perfect and so cute I had to grab a picture of it! We talked about his drawings and that his people are getting much better—they work with them on making the legs and arms rectangles instead of just lines and it occurred to me that yes, his people have started having rectangular arms and legs! (These are the things I never thought about.)
This got sent home with us today, too, from pumpkin week! She said the ripped and cut paper is great for dexterity and to let him cut as much as he wants to. She asked if he does small things like Legos and I said “OF COURSE! HE LIVES TO PLAY WITH LEGOS!” But apparently he could still use more practice with fine motor skills so we need to get out some nuts and bolts and let him go to town.
Overall, she said Owen was doing REALLY well. She said they don’t do report cards per se, but they do have a form that tracks the basics of what the kids know. They actually pull them out for one-on-one testing and are “graded” 1-4, with 1 being (I think) “Does not meet expectations” to 4 “Exceeds expectations” and that 2s (needs work) and 3s (meets expectation) are expected and normal. As you can see, Owen has all 2s and 3s.
She knows he can do the more complex patterns, but she hadn’t yet had the chance to officially test him on them. She said she needed to redo the sorting and classifying as well because he was the last one before recess and she could just see him glaze over and could tell she was losing him. I said that sounds about right. 🙂
A few of his 2s (“completes assignments on time” and “uses time constructively”) were things that sounded exactly like him, too—he’s a perfectionist so he takes too much time trying to get things exactly right and then doesn’t have enough time to finish the assignment. (I can see it at home with homework, too. If the sheet says to practice his letters, instead of just doing two or three practice letters, he crams about eight into the space. At home it’s fine because we have unlimited time…not so much at school.)
She said they have noticed that he can read and we talked about that—what I can do at home to help him since the books that get sent home for daily reading are really too easy for him. She doesn’t really have harder books and can’t really send more than one (he’d go through them too fast) so we are to work on comprehension of what he reads (she said lots of kids can read really well but have no idea what they read). Fair enough. She was impressed, though, and said he was on the advanced end, as there are kids who are still learning their letters!
She showed me a math journal (which was lots of shapes) and a poetry journal (which is where they paste a poem they learned and then they have to draw and color something from the poem).
We talked about homework—she said she hates it and doesn’t care if they do it or return it (and that she rarely looks at it—she has the assistant look over it). She said the kids work all day at school and she’d much rather have them go outside and play when they get home! (Then why does it get sent home?) But, I told her I liked that there was just a few minutes a day because that way he learns he has to schedule it and make sure to get it done (since he needs more practice with organization).
So overall a great report in my book! She said he’s very polite and has noticed he can be emotional (yep, that’s my boy!). People told me to just give the teacher a chance and she would know all about Owen before too long…and I was hesitant. But after eight weeks I feel like she has a grip on his abilities and personality and is on top of things.
Then it was time to hit the playground!!
Ballerina Dance
We got this dance costume from a friend thinking we might use it for Halloween but we ended up using the cheerleader. But since she loves ballerina skirts, I put it on her today and she just danced and danced. 🙂

Flu shot day!
Since Owen had the day off, it was the perfect (read: only) day to get his flu shot (they’re only open for walk-ins 8:30-3:30—not conducive to his school hours).
Owen wanted to take the elevator and Katie was a bit unsure. She VERY cautiously stepped over the crack while saying “Be careful!” 🙂
Then she didn’t want her picture taken.
The kids did great. Owen was worried about it hurting, even though I kept reminding him that he was squawking about it last year and then he ended up saying “That was it?!” I told him he had to be brave for Katie so she wouldn’t get scared…so he was good until it was time to get on the table. He started getting worried and had a pained look on his face when he saw the nurse getting the needle ready so she told him to look at me and while he was saying he didn’t want his flu shot, I told him it was already done! 🙂 Katie cried a little but was more interested in the bandaid afterwards.
Hanging with Owen

Walking in the woods.
Owen: Wow! Look at that tree. It’s 1,000 pounds up!
The kids were frosting a cake with Grannie Lin. Towards the end:
Owen: I can’t touch it otherwise I might eat it all myself.
I blew my nose.
Owen: That’s a lot of snot.
Owen: Mom, I know who has the pigtails.
Me: Pigtails? What? Who?
Owen: Wendy.
Me: Who’s Wendy?
Owen: The place you go get lunch.
Me: How do you know about Wendy’s?
Owen: I’ve never been there but I was in my dreams.
Owen: My nose is bleeding.
Me: What happened?
Owen: I don’t know.
Me: Maybe it’s just too dry in our house. I’ll put up your humidifier again.
Owen: Maybe it was because I picked my nose really hard.
Me: Or that.
Katie apparently knows her letters
Trick or Treating!
The last hour post-dinner/pre-trick-or-treating was the worst (ToT didn’t start until 6:30). Owen was asking me every minute if it was time yet. We just kept the Tivo playing and hoped for the best.
We started getting them dressed (SLOWLY) about 6 and then started inside pictures about 6:20 (none of which turned out)…then outside pictures at 6:25…and it was a good thing that didn’t take too long because Owen started to see neighbor kids come out and he WANTED TO GET STARTED. 🙂 Tom was super excited, too, as he has missed the last two trick-or-treat nights. The weather was chilly, but not bad. I just had on a sweatshirt, Katie had a turtleneck, and I layered two long-sleeved shirts on Owen.
And then one quick cell phone shot as we were headed out!
We ran into one of his friends at the second house.
And then the house that he visited with Grannie Lin with the RIP sign with glowing eyes!
Katie did pretty good walking and keeping up, but when there was a long stretch with no houses, Tom would carry her (and when her pumpkin got too heavy with candy—as it did towards the end of the night—I’d carry that). She would repeat everything we said—like we’d say “Owen, go up to that house” and she’d parrot back “Owen, go up to that house!” The whole night. And she kept saying “I trick or treat! I trick or treat daddy!” It was adorable.
About 10 houses in, they were finally getting the hang of walking up together, actually saying TRICK OR TREAT, and saying THANK YOU. They didn’t have it mastered until almost the end, as usual. 🙂
When we were done with our street, we asked if they wanted to do more or go home. Both immediately said MORE! But, by the time we were done with the second street and we asked the same thing, Owen said he was ready to go home! They had plenty of candy so home we went.
The first thing Owen chose to eat? Pretzels.
Katie? Milky Way.
Giving daddy a big smooch!
She did well for being up way past her bedtime, and we let Owen stay up later as well…but he was definitely ready for bed at 9.
Mama can we go the playground please?
Spirit Day and My Little Pumpkin
I was originally excited thinking that kids would dress up for school today but with the school-wide party last week and early dismissal today, today was a “spirit day” and they were supposed to dress in orange and black. And Tom actually was home this morning and got Katie dressed—and then I remembered at the last possible minute before heading to the bus stop that I had to put her in the sweater that I’ve been waiting a year and a half for (a hand-me-down from the Beson girls!).
