A first and last time for the video game place.

We came home from a play date with friends and the kids wanted to go across the street and play with the three neighbor boys. They went over and the kids weren’t home but the dad offered to take Katie and Owen to them—they were at a local gaming place. They were both willing to spend their own money to do it so I then offered to pay for them, thinking that they would be able to play a multiplayer game with the other boys instead of being limited to two people per game like they generally are at home on the Xbox.

Fast forward to receiving this picture from the dad and this is what was going on: everybody was on a different computer doing something different. In other words, paying for exactly what they could be doing at home for free. so we had a conversation about that when they got home. Katie spent two hours on YouTube and Owen played by himself for two hours which is just an insane waste of money.

Kids.

Owen doesn’t really fit on his ATV anymore and he’s wanted a Segway for awhile, so when we were able to grab one for free to try out and review, we jumped at it! He practiced in the basement and actually got pretty good, so today was his first real world experience. I’m amazed at how good he is!!

I even did a Facebook live of it…

And of course Katie wanted to try but she’s too light so Tom helped a bit.

I even got on (holding Tom for dear life) for about 10 seconds and that was enough to know I didn’t need to do it again. 😂

Parent Teacher conferences

Both kids had student-led conferences. Owen needs to work on his presentation skills and info presented as his answers were like:

What are you good at?
Everything.

What is your goal?
To be the best at everything I do.

What do I need to work on?
Nuttin

I’m pretty sure he’s trying to be funny…but we talked to his teacher and she said she had zero complaints or worries about him. He listens, pays attention, doesn’t get distracted, has lots of friends…

Katie is doing great, too. She filled out her self-evaluation that she didn’t like math, spelling, or reading—which both us and the teacher thought odd since she’s great at all three. You could even see her demeanor change when talking about it. Her teacher even asked where the other Katie was. It’s so frustrating. She obviously knows, for example, her math facts (tests show it). But at home when she’s doing homework she flails when trying to answer 7+4 or 12-3 and gives us ridiculous answers like “I DON’T KNOW. 50?”

She also showed us her Kindness Quit square that was hanging in the main hallway.

Her teacher said she’s doing very well and is very smart and helpful. We just have to figure out the math and reading thing.

Owen’s brain scares me.

He was just telling me something about school and then said “Remember that guy who invented the water gun?” HUH? WHAT? No, I don’t. He tells me it was at the museum with Jackson and Liam. WHAT? Oh, okay, the Museum of Science an Industry…but no, I don’t remember it. THAT WAS TWO YEARS AGO. So I google and yep, of course he was right. And once I read the blurb I remembered it. He does things like this ALL the time…and whenever I question him, it turns out he’s right.

Double wins at bingo!

Tonight was the school bingo event and we had a blast!

We invited friends, ate pizza and Bundt cakes for dinner, and Katie won two bingos!! One was even a red ticket which means she got to pick from the BIG gifts.

And look what we got…

A huge Bundt cake (which happened to be Confetti, her favorite flavor!) and a year’s supply of bundlets (one per month)!! WOOHOO!! Then she picked the loom bracelet for her second prize!!!

Let’s just say we don’t have good backs in our house.

I threw my back out last week and Tom threw his out yesterday (reaching for something he dropped). He managed to hold out overnight until the kids went to school before going to the ER…

The typical drug routine didn’t work this time so long story short about five hours in (when his pain level was still at a 10) they ended up admitting him so they could do an MRI (the ER couldn’t administer it on their own for whatever reason).

I had to go home to eat lunch, pack his overnight bag, get the kids off the bus, and then we all went back for a picnic dinner and some cuddles.

He seemed a little better, but then he wasn’t moving. He said his pain was about a 3 laying there but any time he tried to move or stand it was a 10. He has an MRI scheduled for the morning so hopefully we will know more then.

Do any other parents hate mornings as much as I do?

😖 Sometimes I get woken up early just for Owen to ask Alexa what the temperature is even though there is another Alexa elsewhere in the house.

😖 There’s generally a question if they have to take a shower.

😖 Some times there’s drama about clothing. From one or both.

😖 There’s sometimes drama about wearing appropriate outerwear for the weather.

😖 There is generally some tattletailing going on from the little one about something completely inconsequential.

😖 And let’s not forget some kind of drama about homework that was forgotten (even though I asked) or homework not being put in the bag.

😖 And this morning there was extra special drama about a backpack being too full of crap and apparently I can’t look in it to see what the problem might be.

Happy birthday, Owen! Or not.

So I came downstairs and gave Owen a big birthday hug or four and we talked about his birthday and his sleepover that afternoon… I took a casual birthday picture.

I wore his baby face necklace and took a birthday picture with him.

I posted a happy birthday post on Facebook.

While he was at another birthday party, Tom and I gave some cuddles to Katie because we knew the rest of the day would be about Owen.

And it wasn’t until we were all eating dinner (with his friends!) that I realized it wasn’t his birthday. OMG, am I a bad mom or what?! I asked Owen why he hadn’t said anything and he just shrugged his shoulders and said it wasn’t a big deal.

That said, I knocked it out of of the park with his gift: 900 Pokémon cards. He couldn’t believe his eyes and was practically vibrating with excitement. 🙂

This is what it looks like to be the mom of a 10-year-old with two 10-year-old boys over for a sleepover. #thirdmargarita #soloud #thankheavensforbasements

I think we only had to go in about five times to tell them to quiet down, and they were out by 11:30.

Owen’s amazing Pokémon evolutions.

Owen really is amazing when it comes to creating Pokémon and evolutions. Today he was making a birthday card for his friend and wasn’t sure what to draw so we told him to draw some Pokémon. We thought he’d just draw a common Pokémon, but he came up with two new Pokémon, complete with two evolutions each, for a total of six new Pokémon (he did one for the birthday boy and one for his sister, just because). He just blows me away.

Polar Vortex Day 1

We knew it was coming (school was even called off in advance) but it was still a shock to see it. Feels like -45°.

I stayed in bed because the kids can fend for themselves (and Tom had a late start) but eventually Katie came up to cuddle for a few minutes.

Then Tom went to work and I honestly hadn’t been planning to leave the house but we were invited down to the neighbor’s house for lunch and to just hang out…so we did. The kids had fun playing, we had a yummy lunch and birthday cake (for Enzo’s birthday), and I actually helped Stacey organize her pantry (yes, that’s fun for me!).

When we got home we turned our new heater on…and someone loved it. 🙂

And even though the furnace was working and it said it was 70° in the house I was still cold so pretty much sat under blankets next to the heater…

Braces!!

Braces are coming shortly!! He is excited!!

Getting closer! First they have to remove the expander.

He wasn’t nervous but his feet did come off the chair while it was happening.

Picking colors! He gets to pick as many as he wants since his birthday is coming up! (Normally they get a max of two colors.)

He opted for rainbow colors since he was getting six brackets. And instead of purple he chose lilac for me. 🙂

Prepping his teeth.

Brackets going on!

First braces selfie! My baby!!!!!!!

After!! OMG.
