Sickness Update

I felt 100% in the morning—and both kids appeared good as well (Katie even slept in). I even had plans to go out to dinner and a movie with a friend… But come 1:30ish I started getting really tired and out of nowhere my reflux started acting up very badly…and let’s just say my gut wasn’t happy, either. So I cancelled my plans and hung out on the couch while the grandparents handled dinner…and am on my way to bed right now.

Neither kid has a temp, but neither one seems 100% yet (though they have their energy spurts)…and Owen still has a hoarse voice and a hacking cough that I need to watch.

Ugh.

What happened to us?

Otherwise titled I guess there’s no better time to get crazy sick than two hours after your parents arrive for their two-week visit…and as long as we’re at it, no better time for BOTH kids to get sick as well.

I started feeling headachy about an hour after we got back from the airport yesterday and thought it was because I hadn’t eaten much all day…so had a snack and some water. And it got worse. Then I felt nauseous. Then I was spouting from both ends, as they say.

I was REALLY thankful that Grannie Lin and Papa were here, even though I felt bad they walked straight into kid duty.

But, because they were here, I could just relax…and then go to bed early. Like 7:47 I had my lights out and phone off early. I tossed and turned and slept fitfully until about midnight when I finally fell into a good sleep.

In the morning I felt fine…and learned that Owen had woken up crying loudly about 10pm (I am amazed I missed it). But he didn’t have a fever and looked and said he felt fine, so it was off to school.

I got a call about 11:30 saying he had thrown up but didn’t have a fever so he could stay at school, but they were just letting me know what was going on. (Apparently they have to throw up twice in an hour or have a fever to be sent home.) But then about half an hour later I got a call saying he hadn’t gotten sick again but he wasn’t eating lunch and was crying and asking for his mama so it was up to me. So I went to get him. They told me a stomach bug has been going around. (And in the meantime, the friends who had the gymnastics birthday party yesterday emailed and apologized saying that they’d seen a lot of our Facebook posts and added to their family…it appears a bug may have been spread at their party.) So who knows what really happened.

Owen seemed somewhat better once he was home, but I made him rest and drink water. I was thankful Katie was the vision of health. Until a few hours later when she suddenly barfed all over herself and the couch. And as I was gathering her up and getting dad and Linda to help out…I heard Linda rushing Owen to the bathroom where he puked.

Sigh.

Then Katie seemed fine and Owen seemed pretty okay…but tired out. He finally fell asleep and slept hard for a good two hours when I struggled to wake him up and got him to pee and go to bed. Katie seemed fine the rest of the night.

Here’s hoping it’s a less-than-24-hour thing for them, too, and they’re both healthy tomorrow. AND that the grandparents don’t get it…

Fire truck field trip!

It was only outside to the school parking lot but it’s still considered a field trip. 🙂

The class got to see a real fire engine, walk through it, and talk to the firemen. He also got his own fireman’s hat (though I didn’t get a good pic of him in it).

We were all asking him about it on the way home from the airport…

Grannie: Did they sound the siren?
Owen: No, you only do that in an emergency.
Papa: Did they shoot water from the hose?
Owen: No, you only do that when there’s a fire.

Well, he IS right. 🙂

Look! A super cute ninja!

Yeah, I’ve gone a bit overboard this year as this is costume #3 (the others were Robo Knight and Superman) plus he has Thor leftover from last year that he didn’t wear (and still fits). But I couldn’t resist a ninja—and he plays in them as well.

If he chooses this one (and I guess even if he doesn’t) it will need some altering—the red leg ties don’t stay in place so will need to be ironed on permanently.

An unexpected visitor!

The pressure washer knocked on the door to let me know he rustled a small bat out of a [box on the side of our house—a vent? filter?] and it was currently laying in the grass, stunned. Cool! So I took Owen out to see it (Katie was napping).

I should have put something in the pic for scale, but I was more concerned with getting a picture before he woke up and flew off (he’d already been out about 10-15 minutes). His body was about the size of a child’s fist.

20131006-162035.jpg

I tried to flip him over (with our pooper scooper) which woke him up and he started hissing (?) at us. Owen said “GE HAS TEEFERS!” 🙂 Yes, he did!

Then I got him flipped over…

20131006-162543.jpg

And a minute or so later he flew off. Owen was sad he didn’t get to say goodbye. 🙂

I’m still stunned.

Tonight I ordered pizza for dinner.

Me: Owen, do you want yogurt or do you want it plain?
Owen: Plain.
Me: Completely stunned.

After he ate his two pieces and was clearing his plate, he says “Mama! You forgot the yogurt!” I reminded him he said plain and he didn’t say anything else.

I still can’t believe he didn’t have yogurt. I mean, there are times he doesn’t have yogurt, but never at home!

Baseball Day 4

I didn’t take many pictures today because it was really hot and humid (the warmest day we had yet, if you can believe it). I did, however, take videos of Owen at bat and running some of the bases.

20131005-142225.jpg

Katie amused herself by gathering used drinking cups. 🙂

20131005-142443.jpg

We went straight home after eating (skipping the playground) because it was so stifling—and because Katie was TIRED (remember, her nap has been moved back to 11).

Two new bedtimes!

So, Owen has been pretty much done with naps for awhile now, right? Right.

Until Pre-K started, apparently, when they have an hour scheduled for “rest” which can include a nap if they’re tired or just quiet time where they can draw or read.

So what do I read on his daily take-home sheet Monday? He slept. Okay, I thought, that was a fluke—maybe he was just really worn out or didn’t get a good night’s sleep. So, what did I read Tuesday? He slept. Hmmmm. Okay. And then today? HE SLEPT AGAIN! He has taken THREE naps this week!

So…I’m thinking he needs more sleep at night (even though he is already going to bed earlier and getting up at the same time—I haven’t had to wake him up for school once yet)…so I moved his bedtime to 7:30 instead of 8.

And since Katie WAS at 7:30 and I didn’t want them both going at the same time (a little rough on me), I moved her to 7—which is also likely a good thing because her daytime nap has moved back to 11 so she’s likely more tired at night.

And what might be the best bonus? More free time at night for me!

Playground Observations

I love how I never know what’s going to come out of his mouth.

We have the baseball playground (the playground next to where he plays baseball, of course!) and the playground that I typically refer to as “the one by Miss Katherine’s house” to which Owen usually replies “Big’s house?” which is true (Big is Katherine’s son) or “the one with the three slides” (yes).

But today after we had the typical exchange, he says “The one with the wood chips? Not the sand?” Um, wow. Yes. The baseball playground has sand and the other one has wood chips. Impressive.

Having a little snack:

Owen just lost his free-play bath privileges.

Owen loves baths. He just had to take one due to a poop accident + being a hot sweaty mess from playing outside so since we had plenty of time I just let him play and play and play.

Since we’ve had water issues before (he sometimes has a hard time keeping it IN the tub), I warned him again today (multiple times, in fact) not to get water on the floor. (Now, I’m not talking about drops or random splashes, but buckets—I’m not evil.)

I checked on him a few times and everything was fine. But when I just went up to empty the tub and rinse him off…I discovered the rug half soaked and probably a gallon of standing water.

Breathe.
Breathe.

I know it’s not a HUGE deal in the grand scheme of things…but I’ve warned him SO many times that he needs to learn the lesson. So until further notice (or he earns them back) he gets quick baths only.

Pre-K Open House

Amazingly, Owen was Mr. Shy when we got there…hiding behind me and literally holding onto my shirt. He had already met the teacher, he was back in his old classroom, AND his buddy Braxton was there…so I have NO idea what was going on. It took me a good five minutes to get him to look for his cubby (and I only got him to do it by proclaiming I’d found it and pointing to a picture that was obviously NOT him which got him giggling). Then he wouldn’t give me a good smile.

2013-09-27 14.57.03

Then he finally came back to his normal self…he told me the reading area had moved (the classroom had been completely rearranged).

They had the menu sitting out for next week so I took a look. As I expected, breakfasts and snacks were okay, but there was NOT ONE SINGLE THING he would eat on any of the lunches except cheese pizza (and milk).

  • Monday: Chicken parmesan over whole grain pasta, green beans, peaches, milk
  • Tuesday: Beef soft tacos on tortilla, red beans, pineapple, milk
  • Wednesday: Turkey & cheese on whole grain wrap, squash, peaches, milk
  • Thursday: Grilled chicken breast, brown rice with gravy, cranberry sauce, green peas, milk
  • Friday: Cheese pizza, corn, mandarin oranges, milk

I asked the teacher if there was ANYTHING we could do because he wouldn’t eat any of it. She said “Well, if he just eats some of it, it should be okay.” I said “No, you don’t understand, he won’t eat the chicken parmesan, the pasta, the green beans, the peaches, the soft tacos, the red beans, the pineapple, the turkey and cheese, the squash, the grilled chicken, the rice and gravy, the cranberry sauce, the peas, the corn, or the mandarin oranges.” Her response: “Oh, you really mean he won’t eat ANYTHING.” Yep. She sent me to talk to the main admin person. I went through almost the same thing with her verbatim.

Me: My son won’t eat anything on the lunch menu except the cheese pizza. Is there anything we can do?

Her: Well, as long as he eats something like the beans or the rice or the peaches…

Me: No, he won’t eat the chicken parmesan, the pasta, the green beans, the peaches, the soft tacos, the red beans, the pineapple, the turkey and cheese, the squash, the grilled chicken, the rice and gravy, the cranberry sauce, the peas, the corn, or the mandarin oranges.

Her: Oh. Wow. You really mean he won’t eat anything.

And of course I’m thinking WHY DOESN’T ANYONE EVER BELIEVE ME?!?!

And long story short, it’s tough luck. I can’t bring anything and they can’t even give him, say, that day’s breakfast or snack foods at lunch time. Each menu square is for that exact day/time only with NO exceptions. He can have a second helping at breakfast or a second helping at snack…but for lunch he’s just out of luck. They will, of course, promote trying the new foods (which I am totally a fan of) but if he doesn’t eat, he doesn’t eat. Too bad. I said “So after he hasn’t eaten anything for lunch for two weeks can we revisit this?” And she said yes, but she was sure everything would be fine. And I guess it might (hopefully peer pressure will work its magic), but it’s just VERY disconcerting to know your super picky eater who you KNOW won’t like anything and HATES to try new food won’t be eating lunch and there’s nothing you can do about it. On one hand I’m glad I don’t have to pack a lunch every day…but if it means he’s not eating lunch, then it’s kinda stupid. Damn government rules. Oh, and they never get PB&J due to allergy precautions, even though no one in his class has peanut allergies. (Okay, I’m really just guessing at that, but inwas told they do not get peanut butter, so I just extrapolated the rest from that.)

But on the positive side, I really hit it off with the teacher. She’s super nice and personable and we ended up chatting quite a bit since we were the last ones there. She’s a mom of three (5, 2, and 4mo), a military wife, and they’ve only been here a year. So I invited her to join our mom group since we’re always looking for new people!! Of course we don’t have a designated weekly group meet yet this school year (we’re still getting schedules worked out) but I told her she could come over to my house for a play date and then we’d go from there. She seems excited so that’s cool. And I figure it can’t hurt to get on the teacher’s good side… 🙂
