Snow day snowman!

Today marked the SEVENTH snow day this year (and the fourth in two weeks). Tom had a 2-hour delay but actually ended up working from home.  Thankfully the kids weren’t ready to go outside until quite late in the morning. I think the major excitement of snow has worn off—though they still like it and want to go out and play in it, it’s not the very first thing they want to do!

Owen was pretending he was a ninja with his new scarf. He actually made me pull it up higher over his face. 🙂

The first thing I noticed was it was actually on the warm side—so I had a good feeling about the snow quality. One quick swipe of the snow on the car and yep—perfect snowman snow!! Time to make their very first snowman!!

The kids were excited…but weren’t much help. 🙂 Owen helped pack snow and find sticks and Katie wandered around.

It’s been probably 25-30 years since I made a snowman. It was hard with such a small yard and because we didn’t have that much snow—and what we had was on top of icy stuff—so it was a lot of scraping from all over. We could’ve tried the backyard but there’s a much higher chance of buried dog poop back there!

The kids LOVED him!

Then it was off to the backyard for more snow after they trampled everything in the front (it doesn’t take long).

But it was really wet and actually turning slushy so we went inside.

Owen LOVES his scarf…and looks quite dapper if I do say so myself. 🙂

Katie peed on the potty!

We haven’t officially started potty training yet, but every now and again we will ask Katie if she wants to pee or poop on the potty. Sometimes she wants to but nothing happens and other times she wants nothing to do with any of it.

But tonight when Tom asked her she said yes! And then actually proceeded to tinkle!

We all made a big deal about it and she got to pick a toy from the toy bin! I think Owen was most excited, getting out the toy selection and picking her toy—until we told him she got to pick her own toy! To his credit, he was still excited for her!

She picked those growing capsule animals:

Of course I’m not expecting anything to come of this. Owen did the same thing and then it was another two years (!) before he was actually potty trained.

Owen’s first sleepover

Owen’s first sleepover was tonight—and it was the first for both of his friends, too.

The kids played for a bit, then we started Fruit Ninja, which they all thoroughly enjoyed.

2015-02-07sleepover01

It’s somewhat exhausting—and they can only really play one at a time—so then we did Crash Course which they could all play at the same time.

Manuel doesn’t have pets, so he was ENTHRALLED with ours (you’ll see more pics later). 🙂

Getting the boys ready for bed about 9. They lined up for a picture, each with one of Owen’s stuffed animals—and here Owen was realizing that they each had one of the primary colors!

2015-02-07sleepover10

2015-02-07sleepover11

Overall, it went pretty good. The boys were boys (roughhousing and such) but they are all fairly similar—very nice, polite, not too terribly rough, and they listened well. We were most worried about putting them to bed and what happened after that since neither of the boys had had a sleepover before. Of course, their parents were on call to come get them, and I had been updating them via text and pics throughout the night. So they all got their PJs on, brushed their teeth, and decided who would sleep where. We told them they could stay up and talk, but they couldn’t be too loud (since Katie was sleeping next door). I read them a story, pointed out all the night lights, told them that if they were scared at all or if anything was wrong to come get us (and we could call their parents), asked if they had any questions (no), and then turned out the lights, crossed my fingers, and went downstairs.

Within minutes, we heard them coming down the steps. 🙂 Apparently the boys were scared of the big stuffed bear, even though they had all been playing with him. But no biggie, Tom just went up with them and threw it in the guest room.

The second trip down (again with all three of them!) was because the kid who decided he wanted to sleep on the top bunk was apparently suddenly afraid of heights and didn’t want to sleep on the top bunk even though we went over that before. But no biggie, we asked if he wanted Owen to sleep on the top and he said no, he wanted to. Ooookay. Back to bed then, and we sent them upstairs.

The third trip down was to tell us that somehow the top-bunk-kid needed his bed made again (turns out he had pulled off all of his bedding to sleep on the floor). Okay, no biggie, Tom went up and got the bedding issue settled.

At this point, I told Tom we should go upstairs to our bedroom so the kids didn’t have to come all the way downstairs each time. So we did. 🙂

Minutes later (the fourth time out of bed), two had to go to the bathroom—even though they all went before getting in bed.

The fifth time, someone was scared of everything in the room. We added another night light (in addition to the three already in there).

Then we heard them talking quietly and we thought maybe that would be the end of it…but then we heard loud thumping and lots of noise so Tom went down and and found them all out of bed! They got told they could talk but they had to stay in bed. We heard more talking but nothing crazy.

About 10, we finally noticed they were really quiet. Tom checked on them and they were all out! We crossed our fingers and hoped it lasted!

Owen’s first real play date

A tiny bit of background… Owen decided maybe two months or so ago that he wanted a pool party at our community pool for his birthday. We were totally on board with this idea since it would be inexpensive (no cost for the pool and we just have to buy food and drinks) and he could invite his whole class. Well, loooooong story short, we are still going to have a summer birthday party, but we will only be inviting a select number of friends…and in honor of his actual birthday, we are letting him have his very first sleepover!

So in preparation for the sleepover, one of the invitees came over for an extended play date today—it would also be his first away-from-home sleepover and we thought it best for him to be comfortable with us, the animals, the house, etc. His mom and I chatted for about a half hour (they were the ones we sat with during Bingo Night) and then she left.

The kids had a great time! There were light saber fights, beanbag jumping (with only a few warnings to be careful), and then finally…Legos!

When the visit got extended and I needed time to prep dinner without wondering what they were up to about the house, I finally let them watch a half hour of TV. 🙂

Baltimore: food, fish, and fun!

Level 8 of the parking garage across from the aquarium. Owen was pretending to swim like a turtle when I snapped this!

2015-01-16 11.14.00

On the drive here, I saw that there was a Capital Grille very close by—a restaurant we both miss from Troy—so we decided to eat lunch there! We stopped at Panera first to get the kids a bagel, and then it was a few doors down for our fancy lunch!

2015-01-16 12.29.06

The kids enjoyed the bread basket, Tom had a lobster and crab burger with truffle fries (which Katie ate most of), and I had scallops with wild mushroom risotto and a side of lobster bisque (and the obligatory food porn shot with the single lobster piece for mom):

2015-01-16 12.02.08

And then on to the aquarium! (We actually bought a family membership because tickets for today alone would have been about $100 and if we want to go again within the next year—which we will!—it would be even more because Katie will be over the “free” admission age—and we got a discounted membership for $155. It also gives us discounts on parking and gift shop purchases.)

The kids spent the whole time running from exhibit to exhibit like crazy people. Pretty much all Owen said the entire time was “COME HERE! LOOK AT THIS! OH WOW! MOM! DAD! COME HERE! DID YOU SEE THAT? LOOK AT THIS! COME HERE! COME HERE! OH MY GOSH! LOOK AT THIS! COME HERE!” Katie was a little less vocal but enjoyed everything but LOVED all the turtles and the penguins and puffers.

Then it was time for the 4D Spongebob movie ($5 extra per person of course!). We couldn’t take pictures during it, but it was AWESOME. I hadn’t been to a 4D movie since Honey I Shrunk the Kids at Disney probably 20 years ago! This production had bubbles, rumbling, lightning, wind, snow, and jellyfish tickling our legs! 🙂 OWEN LOVED IT…but was confused when it was over so soon because he only knows movies to be LONG.

Owen had a bit of a meltdown after our trip through the gift shop because everything he wanted was either too expensive or stuff we just didn’t want to get (he just didn’t need MORE cars or stuffed animals or a $30 T-shirt or cheap plastic toys). We offered a handful of different items (books, a Lego-ish type shark to build, etc.) that he could get but he didn’t want any of them and was just in a total snit about it. We explained he didn’t need to get a surprise every time we went anywhere and we did have limits on what he could get, and if we was going to act this way after a big day full of special things, then we just wouldn’t do stuff like this anymore. By the time we walked back to the car he apologized. 🙂

Katie was out before we exited the parking garage:

2015-01-16 16.03.32

On the way home we both decided we didn’t want to cook dinner, so we were going out to eat. The place we wanted to try at the mall had an 1:30 wait—NO THANKS!—so we went to a 4-star Yelp sushi place across the street where we were the only patrons! The kids made do with rice but balked at the shrimp and veggie tempura we got them (who doesn’t like deep fried anything?!). Owen made a puppet out of the bag from the chocolate we bought earlier:

2015-01-16 17.46.36

And then after a whirlwind day…we finally headed home.

No school, the Pentagon, and an award!

Tom was scheduled to receive an award at work (the Meritorious Service Medal) and we had decided we would ALL go, which meant taking Owen out of school. Since Tom knew he’d get the rest of the day off, we decided to make a special day of it and do something really worthwhile of missing school—take the kids to Baltimore to the National Aquarium!

A family selfie before we headed out:

IMG_4434.JPG

Thank heavens for the HOV express lane—this was the standstill traffic on the way into DC (well worth the few bucks it cost us):

IMG_4438-0.JPG

Then we had about a 3/4 mile walk in to the Pentagon from the parking lot. Yeesh—Tom has to do that twice a day. Tom was obviously already cleared, but the rest of us had to go through a metal detector and get wanded. Then once we were inside the Pentagon, we had to walk clear to the other side. With my horrid sense of direction, there’s absolutely NO way I would not get lost if I was on my own.

I’m not exactly sure what I was expecting, but it wasn’t what I was expecting. 🙂 There were lots of wide open hallways and empty corridors with nondescript doors and exiting one ring to cross a “street” to get to the next ring. And while logically I know the Pentagon is HUGE, it didn’t seem as huge as I thought it would (if that makes sense).

And then we were in his office. No windows in the whole thing, of course, and a tiny cubicle:

IMG_4541.JPG

Before the award ceremony we had a brief meeting with Tom’s commanding general (the Senior Communications Officer of the entire Marine Corps) where he met me and the kids and had a few get-to-know-each-other minutes. Owen was really great with him and shook his hand and answered questions.

Then it was off to the conference room to wait. The kids had fun checking out the big room and seeing themselves on the big TV:

IMG_4442-0.JPG

And as more and more people filed into the room, Owen got more and more shy and hid behind me the entire time. Katie was shy, too, but at least sat quietly in a chair.

A coworker of Tom’s offered to take pictures so I wouldn’t have to worry about it so that was nice (even though I hated to give up control).

The general welcomed everyone and jokingly asked what time people were thinking of leaving and there was a pregnant pause while no one said anything so I piped up “9:07” (implying we’d be leaving as soon as the award ceremony was over) and everyone laughed and the general said Tom was welcome to leave and go celebrate and everyone else was to leave at noon. 🙂

Owen’s first shopping spree

Owen’s school offered a Penguin Shop for the kids to shop for inexpensive gifts for their families. I volunteered one afternoon and it was…a little crazy. 🙂 Owen had $10 to spend on gifts for me, dad, and Katie. He came home with something for each of us (plus about $3 left over) and he was SO excited for us to open them…so we finally did tonight.

I got a cupcake pencil sharpener, Tom got a purple high-heeled shoe pencil sharpener, and Katie got a barrette with a feather on it! Our very first gifts from Owen with no parental input whatsoever! I told Tom I would switch him sharpeners, but he said no way—he was keeping the very first gift his boy bought him! 🙂

Katie LOVED her feather…

CHUCK E. CHEESE!!

Owen has wanted to go to Chuck E. Cheese for quite some time now. Neither Tom nor I wanted to go because the food really sucks and it’s just a money pit. So, we told Owen that he could go when Uncle Rob came down (that way it would be seen as a super special treat and he wouldn’t ask us to go all the time). He was actually very good about being patient—it’s probably been over a year that we’ve been telling him this.

So when we learned that Grandma Marsha and Uncle Rob were going to be here this week, Owen knew what was going to happen! And boy was he exited!

Me: So who’s all going to Chuck E. Cheese?
Owen: Me and Uncle Rob.
Me: Just you and Uncle Rob? Not daddy?
Owen: No! Daddy, too. But not Grandma or you or Katie. Just the three boys!

The plan was to take separate cars to see Santa and then the boys would go to the restaurant and the girls would go home. I figure why get Katie excited about it when she really didn’t care to start with. I did, however, make Tom promise to take pictures. 🙂

These are the two pics Tom texted me.

2014-12-13kids095.jpg

2014-12-13kids106.jpg

I really really hoped he had taken more than that…and he had! 🙂 I saw these when he got home.

His $45 “prize”—a Dory fish from Finding Nemo.

Yes, they spent about $45 total on food, drinks, and games…and he only got a trinket worth about 49¢. It was a great lesson…we asked him if he’d rather have the little fish or a big Lego set. He obviously choose the Lego set. He was surprised that he could have had something so big instead of something so small. We said it was okay to go and play games and have fun, but it was really expensive so that’s why it was a super special treat that we didn’t do very often. He said from now on he’d rather have the Legos. 🙂

Katie rocked her first trip to the dentist!

I took both kids in tonight—Owen for his regular 6-month checkup and Katie for her first ever visit. She loves brushing her teeth so I didn’t think she’d have any problems with it…but you never know.

They were both excited to go, and it started well with them playing in the waiting room!

2014-12-01kids002

Then we had a brief introduction with both the hygienist and dentist in their office and then it was off to the chairs!

2014-12-01kids003

Owen was first…

2014-12-01kids004

And Katie was intrigued.

2014-12-01kids005

And got closer…

2014-12-01kids006

I asked if she wanted to hold Owen’s hand and she said yes. 🙂

2014-12-01kids008

Owen did REALLY well (which I would hope, as he’s done this about four times), and then it was Katie’s turn!

2014-12-01kids015

2014-12-01kids016

She was a total rock star. They were able to do a full cleaning (as opposed to Owen’s first visit at age four when they only got about three teeth done).

2014-12-01kids017

Then they both got seen by the dentist and were told they need to brush twice a day (instead of just once) and start flossing…and Owen NEEDS to stop sucking his thumb as his teeth are already out of place (Katie’s are perfect). She said this is THE time to stop as his bottom two teeth are still coming in and his top two are loose (I bet both will be gone by Christmas—one might be gone by this weekend) so the new ones will come in straight. (We’ve told him and showed him pictures of what can happen and he knows he needs to stop—and even catches himself—but it will still be challenging because he’s still just five years old.) Then they got their goody bags and were SOOOOOO excited about the toothbrush and stickers and toothpaste—and Owen got a toy truck and Katie got a little mermaid! They were in HEAVEN.

So overall they both did AWESOME and I loved the staff—we’ve had nice dental staff before, but you can see a difference in a regular dentist who sees kids vs. a pediatric dentist. 🙂

Katie’s first movie!

Tom wanted to take Owen to see Big Hero 6 and wondered if he should try taking Katie. I thought it was worth a try since she can sit still through movies at home…but I said I’d go shopping nearby in case things went south and he needed me to retrieve her. Of course I would be sad to miss being there for her first movie…but I got to do Owen’s first movie so it was only right that Tom get to do Katie’s!

She understood she was going to see a movie and on the way there this is all we heard:

“Movie. Movie. Movie. Movie. Movie. Movie. Movie. Movie.”

Once there she was having NONE OF IT while I was trying to take a picture. 🙂

IMG_2960.JPG

Unfortunately the movie times had changed in the three days since we last checked, so Tom had an hour to kill at the mall. He said it went okay, and then I got these pics:

IMG_2968.JPG

IMG_2969.JPG

IMG_2982.JPG

Tom said Katie was great for the majority of the movie—only getting fidgety towards the end (which is really good since it was almost two hours long!).

IMG_2986.JPG

So it was a success! Yay Katie!

Trick or Treating!

The last hour post-dinner/pre-trick-or-treating was the worst (ToT didn’t start until 6:30). Owen was asking me every minute if it was time yet. We just kept the Tivo playing and hoped for the best.

2014-10-31kids043

We started getting them dressed (SLOWLY) about 6 and then started inside pictures about 6:20 (none of which turned out)…then outside pictures at 6:25…and it was a good thing that didn’t take too long because Owen started to see neighbor kids come out and he WANTED TO GET STARTED. 🙂 Tom was super excited, too, as he has missed the last two trick-or-treat nights. The weather was chilly, but not bad. I just had on a sweatshirt, Katie had a turtleneck, and I layered two long-sleeved shirts on Owen.

And then the house that he visited with Grannie Lin with the RIP sign with glowing eyes!

2014-10-31kids050

Katie did pretty good walking and keeping up, but when there was a long stretch with no houses, Tom would carry her (and when her pumpkin got too heavy with candy—as it did towards the end of the night—I’d carry that). She would repeat everything we said—like we’d say “Owen, go up to that house” and she’d parrot back “Owen, go up to that house!” The whole night. And she kept saying “I trick or treat! I trick or treat daddy!” It was adorable.

2014-10-31kids051

About 10 houses in, they were finally getting the hang of walking up together, actually saying TRICK OR TREAT, and saying THANK YOU. They didn’t have it mastered until almost the end, as usual. 🙂

2014-10-31kids052

When we were done with our street, we asked if they wanted to do more or go home. Both immediately said MORE! But, by the time we were done with the second street and we asked the same thing, Owen said he was ready to go home! They had plenty of candy so home we went.

Owen’s first martial arts experience!

He was invited to a birthday party at a local martial arts place…and boy did he have fun. We would actually have been interested in sending him there, but it’s expensive (not to mention 4-5 days a week).

Here is a video compilation of some of the stuff he did.

But I had to put this video in all on its own—he was SO excited and SO proud of himself for breaking the board! GO OWEN!

First rainy school day!

Luckily we all had raincoats because we apparently lost all our umbrellas (minus Katie’s from Grandma Marsha!) in the move. Katie was thrilled because she got a new (new) coat and new (used) boots to wear for the first time! She couldn’t quite get the hang of the umbrella so Owen held it.

Our first circus!

Today we took the kids to the Big Apple Circus! Tom and I had watched a PBS special on them years ago and always wanted to go…so when I found out they were going to be local, it was a no-brainer. Owen was SUPER excited to go and knew all about the circus, though I honestly have no idea how because I don’t think we’ve ever talked about it, read books about it, or anything.

They were pretty truthful and I was happy with our seats—they were perfect for us because we were right at the top of the steps in the very outermost ring with no seats in front of us right below the A/C! (As it turned out, there were lots of empty seats and we likely could have moved closer, but we just stayed where we were.)

The final act—trapeze artists! Owen LOVED them.

2014-09-20circus23

The butterflies on the walls at the end.

2014-09-20circus24

As we were waking out, I asked Owen what his favorite part was.
Owen: The boing boing at the end!

Which, of course, referred to the trapeze artists doing their final jump/dive into the net to get down from the high wires. 🙂

Then we stopped to eat and didn’t get home until almost 8:00. At which point Owen was still talking about it. 🙂

A pretzel for Owen.

So Owen came home with his sandwich still in his lunchbox. I asked why he didn’t eat it and he said because he wasn’t hungry. Hmmmm. Odd. But okay, kids are kids, it might be possible.

Fast forward a bit and he says “GUESS WHAT I HAD AT LUNCH TODAY?” And proceeds to excitedly tell me he had a [soft] pretzel from the lunch line!

Wait. What?

Yes, the cafeteria has them available for purchase—and he’s talked about them before and how he wants one—but we hadn’t yet gone over his lunch account/account number with him so we had NO idea how he actually got the pretzel since there was no way to pay for it. And of course, asking him questions got us nowhere.

Us: Owen, how did you get the pretzel?
Owen: The lady behind the pretzels gave it to me.
Us: But how did you pay for it?
Owen: She just gave it to me.
Us: You were IN the cafeteria line?
Owen: Yes.
Us: Was everyone getting pretzels? (Thinking maybe it was some special school-wide thing.)
Owen: No.
Us: And no one asked you to pay for it?
Owen: No.

So I emailed the teacher asking if she had ANY idea what might have happened, as we were somewhat concerned he got a pretzel without paying for it (though we didn’t mind that he got a pretzel).

Then I attended the PTO meeting and asked the principal about it, telling her we did have a lunch account but hadn’t yet explained it/taught him about it yet. She said that for the first week or two, the kids can tell the lunch ladies their name and they will deduct it from their account. So I figured okay, that’s obviously what happened. Except Tom asked Owen if they asked his name and he said no. Hmmm. When I got home from the meeting, the teacher had emailed me back saying that right now they are giving the lunch ladies the lunch numbers, so Owen was probably not aware that they told the cafeteria worker his lunch number. Which I guess is good…but you’d think they’d LET THE PARENTS KNOW THAT.

We told Owen it was okay he got the pretzel and we’re glad he took the initiative to do it on his own, but he can’t just decide to do that whenever he wants because a) he doesn’t eat the lunch we packed and b) it costs money. He said he didn’t want any more pretzels, so we’ll see. 🙂

Going to get Owen from the bus stop!

Katie was super excited and was ready to go the second I put her shoes on. Tom made sure to be home in time to go with us. 🙂

Playing with the other kids.

We could finally see the bus…and she sat down to wait. 🙂

Finally!

Once we got home I tried to get the scoop. He was excited and more interested in watching the movie (which was paused). But he was happy so that’s all that matters!

Owen’s first day of kindergarten!

First up? Baths. They didn’t take them after being in the pool yesterday so I figured we had enough time in the morning!

2014-09-02kids005

Katie picked the shark towel!

2014-09-02kids006

She got her toes painted again—this time to match mom!

2014-09-02kids007

They weren’t really focused this morning.

2014-09-02kids008

The best I got (though I didn’t take a ton because it looked like I got a good one). Oh well.

2014-09-02kids009

He opted not to get a haircut and said he’d let me put gel in instead!

2014-09-02kids010

His new minion back pack and lunch box!

2014-09-02kids011

Walking down the hill to the bus stop!

2014-09-02kids012

Waiting excitedly for the bus. We were the first people there but there were some kids across the street. A few minutes later kids just started appearing out of nowhere. We could see the stop ahead of ours and there were probably 20-30 kids there! At our stop there were about 6-8 (it was hard to count with all the parents there as well).

2014-09-02kids013

A mom that I met at the pool was there with her first grader and her 3yo (who is the same size as Katie—and they got along fabulously) and I had her take our picture. We talked about having play dates soon. 🙂

2014-09-02kids014

2014-09-02kids015

Kindergarteners get on first! The bus driver explains that in the afternoon you have to be there to pick them up AND ask for them by name before they can get off the bus.

2014-09-02kids016

Then Katie tried to get on the bus behind Owen. And started screaming and crying when she couldn’t: “OWEE! I MISS MY OWEE! I WANT TO GET ON SCHOOL BUS WITH OWEE!” Poor Katie bug.

2014-09-02kids017

We waved at him through the window, I could see him smiling, and then they were off! Katie was calming down as we walked back to the house with the other mom and daughter (I told them they could cut through our yard) but Katie lost it again when she realized they weren’t coming to our house: “I WANT TO GO WITH THEM!” Poor Katie bug.

2014-09-02kids018

Then it was in the car to head to the school for the Boo Hoo Breakfast!

Back To School Night

So, all the literature about BTS Night mentioned taking the bus from the local library to the school. I could totally understand this because we’d been at the school and there really isn’t much parking (well, at least not for back-to-school type numbers of people). A last-minute email also mentioned available parking at a nearby church and grocery store, but I googled, and it still appeared to be about a mile walk…? (Unless there were hidden walking paths through the trees that didn’t show up.) I figured there would be street parking since it is a neighborhood, but I couldn’t imagine that many people trying to park on the streets…so I just figured the library bus was the best (most popular?) option. I even envisioned two or three buses to take the hoards of people. Besides, we knew both kids would LOVE riding the bus (Katie is infatuated with school buses).

Katie: SCHOOL BUS! SCHOOL BUS!
Owen: C’MON! LET’S GO!!

So we get there and…where are the throngs of people? Where’s the bus(es)? Well, we were 10 minutes early, but still. So the bus arrives at 3:55 and we pull out about 4:05 and there was a grand total of about 20 people on the bus. Huh? I was intrigued—I couldn’t wait to see how many people were actually at the event AND see where they were parking. Yeahhhh…turns out all the surrounding streets were PACKED. (That said, next year? We’re driving. Three hours was TOO long.) But there were lots of people there!

2014-08-28kids008

2014-08-28kids009

My first thoughts?

It was a madhouse. The kindergarten rooms are fairly big, but add in two parents for most of the kids and other siblings…all trying to talk to the teacher and fill out forms at kid-sized tables. EGADS.

What a melting pot. I honestly think Caucasian is the minority here. I have no problems with that—it’s just an observation. Just look at this class list (last names obviously obscured), keeping in mind that some of the more Americanized names are…not:

2014-08-28 class list

Other random things:

Owen was—SURPRISE!—super shy. He didn’t want to go look for his name and was glued to my side. However, he did go with the teacher when she invited him to come look for his number and cubby.

Owen’s teacher is a tiny thing and when they were standing next to each other, I just kinda went HOLY CRAP THEY’RE CLOSE IN SIZE!! I didn’t get a picture, but I’m sure I will eventually. I didn’t immediately LOVE her…but anyone trying to live up to Miss Ashley is going to have a hard time. 🙂 I look forward to getting to know her. She had a few old students come in to say hi, and in briefly chatting with the parents, I could see she is obviously well-liked.

We discovered that one classmate lives in our neighborhood—they recognized us from the pool—so that’s cool. It was so busy I didn’t get a chance to talk to her, but I’m hoping we’ll see them at the pool party this weekend.

So, then the teacher gave a presentation which was fine…except Katie threw a fit during it because she wanted to play with the baby (another person’s actual baby!) and we wouldn’t let her. The teacher heard me saying “No, you can’t play with the baby” and took a moment to stop and ask if I meant the toy doll that was just out of reach and when I said “No, the real baby” the entire room laughed. 🙂 So Tom had her in the hall for the rest of the time.

She said their class has a late lunch this year—1:30! So, snack time will be in the morning instead of the afternoon. (And we have to use a special bag to send in their snack every day. Lordy. I’m sure they know it works, but what a pain.) Another new thing is no mats for rest time—it is just considered Quiet Time for reading or something quiet at your desk. The kids all got name/room stickers to wear the first week so people can help guide them to where they need to be—they have safety patrols out at the buses (older kids, I’m guessing, from those I saw wearing reflective-wear today).

We only had about an hour in the classroom, and it wasn’t long enough because everyone wanted to talk to the teacher (as expected). We could have easily used at least another half hour. Really though, there wasn’t much else (for us) to do. They had a table set up in the cafeteria with info on the school lunch program and you could add money to their account (which long story short, they assigned a SIX-DIGIT number for Owen to memorize to use his lunch account and I was all REALLY? FOR KINDERGARTENERS? so she let me pick a 3-digit number)—and the gym had a few things like Scouts and PTO—but by the time we got done with the extra time in Owen’s classroom, it was time for pizza (Owen ate FOUR slices!) and then we just kind of wandered around. We did get Owen a school shirt, though.

2014-08-28kids010

And even then, we still had almost 45 minutes to waste before the bus took us back to the library. So we went out to the playground.

2014-08-28kids012

I was stunned that THAT was the entire playground area. Granted, they do have a huge paved basketball court and some soccer fields, but for an actual playground area it still seemed SMALL. So imagine my surprise when, as we were leaving, we went past the kindergarten classroom area and saw another SMALLER playground area. Hoo boy. I’m hoping that’s actually for the Pre-K classes so we’ll see.

2014-08-28kids013

2014-08-28kids014

Overall, it was fine. Katie was a bit of a mess on and off but she didn’t do too badly. Owen wanted to go home about 30 minutes in but then he rallied.

I just can’t believe HE STARTS SCHOOL IN FIVE DAYS. The worst part, I think, will be me not being able to take pictures…and Katie going through Owee withdrawal.

Family fun at Pirates Cove

Before we moved, I bought a Groupon for Pirates Cove Waterpark and today was the day! It’s not huge like Great Wolf Lodge, but it’s plenty to keep the kids busy. We started in the wading pool (which is where Katie was supposed to stay since she isn’t potty trained).

2014-08-18kids001

2014-08-18kids002

She did pretty good at waiting her turn in line when it was just a few kids, but when it got to be more than four or five, she either wanted to push to the front of the line or wait and let everyone pass her.

2014-08-18kids003

While I was with Katie, Tom was with Owen over in the bigger pool.

2014-08-18kids004

2014-08-18kids005

2014-08-18kids006

We asked him why he was swimming like this and he said because someone had tied his hands behind his back with a rope! Tom said he even went DOWN the waterslide like that. I love his imagination. 🙂

2014-08-18kids007

2014-08-18kids008

Unfortunately, I could only keep Katie happy and occupied for so long before she REALLY wanted to go in the big pool with daddy and Owen. As in she was starting to throw a fit. So we left the gated wading pool…but the wheel only worked for about two minutes.

2014-08-18kids009

2014-08-18kids010

Finally! She was with daddy in the big pool and she was HAPPY. And fearless. She went under twice, coughed and spit a bit, and then kept on chugging.

2014-08-18kids011

2014-08-18kids012

She loved loved LOVED the waterslide. She would have gone down it the rest of the day if we let her.

2014-08-18kids013

2014-08-18kids014

She really liked the pirate, too!

2014-08-18kids015

2014-08-18kids016

And then we had a major tantrum because it was time to go back to the wading pool and she DID. NOT. WANT. TO. GO. I’ll spare you the few tantrum pics I took (and deleted). We got a funnel cake for a snack and that didn’t really even appease her much. Then she saw the sand area…so that’s where we headed.

2014-08-18kids017

2014-08-18kids018

We had planned to stay longer, but about 2:30 we were leaving. Tom came up and said that Owen was being a major grouch so he lost his pool privileges. It felt like we had been there for a long time…but it was ONLY TWO HOURS. Egads. But the kids had fun. I can definitely see us getting a summer pass next year!

Well, that was some excitement.

Owen locked Katie in his bedroom (technically accidentally but kind of on purpose because he was playing) and—SURPRISE!!—we don’t have a key to open it. None of the generic tools I found were working, our landlord didn’t have a key either, none of the neighbors we knew were home, and the hinges and knob screws were on the inside of the door (so I couldn’t remove them). Oh, and Tom is 1000 miles away.

Cue subdued panic for about 30 minutes while I texted Tom, texted the landlord, visited the neighbors, hunted for the tools, etc.

I finally jimmied it open…and now his knob is reversed, too. Is 9:30 too early for a drink?

Oh! The best part? All Owen was concerned with (if we didn’t get the door open) was he wouldn’t be able to sleep in his bed tonight.

School Supply Shopping

So, what does a kindergartner need to start school? Here’s Owen’s list. I know you’re wondering about the boys list vs girls list and it took me a minute to find it—but the only difference is that boys have top bring gallon bags and the girls have to bring quart bags.

2014 school list

It didn’t look too bad, but from experience (when I worked retail) I always heard parents bitching about how specific the lists were—like if it said “3 red, 3 blue, 3 green pocket folders with clips” you had better bring in those exact colors. If it was Crayola crayons it had better be Crayola and not some off brand. So I’m wondering what things on the list are exact and which are likely just general suggestions. I can’t imagine for KINDERGARTEN it matters that much. The open house isn’t until August 28 (five days before school starts) so I’d rather not have to wait until them to ask the teachers (though I could).

The things I most wondered about are:
(3) Clorox Wipes, Disinfect, Bleach-Free, Lemon Scent, 35ct — Lemon scent? Really?
(4) Dry Erase Markers Chisel Tip Low Odor Black — I’m hoping these come in a four-pack.
(12) Glue Stick, washable, .77oz — I assume .77oz is a popular size but I also assume any washable glue sticks are fine.

So, this morning it was time. And it was somewhat painful.

I literally stood in front of the disinfectant wipes for 10 minutes debating wipes. As you can see, they requested “3 Clorox Wipes, Disinfect, Bleach-Free, Lemon Scent, 35ct.” Do I get the three pack off brand with two lemon scent and one fresh scent 35ct for $4.24? The three off brand lemon scent singles 35ct for about $8? The brand name Clorox lemon scent 75ct buy 3 get 1 free for $12? Or just send in Kirkland wipes I’ve already bought? I opted for the $4.24 set. And don’t get me started on glue sticks.

It took me almost two hours to find and decide on a list of 11 things—and that included two stores because one store (Target, where I started) didn’t have everything (though some of that time was just from being in brand new stores where I didn’t know where anything was).

But now he’s ready! 🙂
