Sesame Street USO Experience

http://www.uso.org/sesame/

Since its debut in July 2008, the Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families has taken its message to more than 248,000 troops and military families and performed 433 shows on 131 military bases in 33 states and eleven countries.

We learned tonight that Owen really doesn’t do LOUD. (We know he doesn’t like sudden loud noises and in general he doesn’t like loud areas…but I was holding out hope.) So, yep, the Sesame Street thing was a fail. But let me start at the beginning…

We were in the third row on the end of the aisle. I was excited because it meant I could get good pics of the stage and Owen would be close enough to see. The mom next to me said “You know they come down the aisles right?” obviously warning me. I said no I didn’t know, but we’d see what happened (if Owen liked it or was freaked out). I loved the Sesame Street sign.

He loved seeing all the kids waiting in line and in the auditorium (“Look at all the kids!”).

He didn’t seem to mind the noise level of the auditorium (the first big challenge).

He loved that he got an Elmo spinny light toy (he LOVES those type of toys).

He let me take a picture (that turned out awesome).

He did awesome waiting the half hour—playing with the spinny toy and my phone (and the mom next to us even commented on how awesome his behavior was, compared to her 2yo monkey who wouldn’t stop climbing and moving).

But…he started saying DONE before the show even started. But it was a calm DONE, like a polite suggestion. I figured once he saw Elmo, maybe he would change his mind. Well, the first thing that happened was a guy came out to welcome everyone and give thanks to certain people…and Owen was okay with that…and I learned he apparently really likes clapping when everyone else is:

Then there was a video of the First Lady and Elmo, welcoming everyone and setting up the premise of the show. And he was okay with that. (This is one of the videos we saw.)

And then Elmo came out and it was LOUD and they started LOUD music and dancing.

And that’s when he became more emphatic with his HOME, DONE, and pointing. He would be excited momentarily when each new character came out, but it was still LOUD songs and he was not a fan. I kept trying to talk to him to hopefully calm him a little and get him through the music to where there would (hopefully) just be talking…but he alternated between putting his head in my lap (trying to hide) and pointing and saying HOME. I thought we might make it, but then he started whining and almost crying, so I knew we were done.

So about five minutes in (before the thing really got started—they were still in the warm up songs) I decided it was time to go and moved to get out of my seat—and he was off like a shot up the aisle, weaving through all the little kids in the aisle who were dancing, not even looking back for me. As soon as we got outside, he was completely fine, playing with his spinny toy and having a ball.

On the way to the car he started saying “Great job, mama, great job.” ❓ He’s been saying that lately and I assume he’s just parroting me saying it (I say it A LOT) but sometimes it’s appropriate for the situation. So I just thanked him, and eventually he said “Great job, mama, seeing Sesame Street.” So to him, he saw Sesame Street and he was just fine. 🙂

So in once sense I was disappointed (I kinda wanted to see the show—it wasn’t just for him!) but he was apparently happy AND we were out of there before it ended so we didn’t have to deal with the crazy traffic AND we got home in time for his bedtime AND at least we learned the lesson a cheap way (free tickets to something local), instead of traveling and spending $$$ on tickets for something in, say, Raleigh.

I’m guessing this is one of the areas we’ll be working on when we eventually start therapy. 🙂

Drop in and drop off!

Since the pre-school thing seems to be on hold for the moment, I thought I’d finally get off my butt and get us set up for the local drop-in childcare place—just so Owen has a place to go once a week for an hour or two for some socialization (and for those times I have a bunch of small errands to run where it would be easier without him). I’ve had the paperwork printed and filled out since January but just never quite got around to it…

So, the plan was only to drop off the paperwork…but once Owen saw the kids and toys, he wanted to stay (of course—I should have known better!). Sign up came with a free hour to “test” them out, so I used it for an unplanned run to Target (right down the street). Now, I’ve ran errands without him before, but he was always at home with Tom or my parents—this was the first time I just dropped him somewhere and left and it just felt weird. Of course he didn’t notice/care one bit (which is a good thing, I know).

When I got back, he was LITERALLY running around the play area pushing a toy and his hairline was damp—which meant he had likely been running around full tilt for the whole hour. 🙂 They reported that he did sit for a bit during story time and I noticed when I got home that they had changed his diaper (his name was written on it!) so I was impressed.

I really wish this place was a pre-school (they do some learning stuff but it’s NOT a school), but at least it’s something for now.

First couch nap!

Well, kinda.

Today was the first time ever he’s fallen asleep on the couch before his nap! He was watching Cars and I was in the office. I kept looking out every 5-10 minutes…but this still happened.

My first thought? OH CRAP.

My second thought? OH MY GOD HE’S SO CUTE.

My third thought? I HAVE TO GET A PICTURE!

Then I made the mistake of going out to show Tom (who was working on the shed) how cute he was…and Tom wanted to move him to his bed. I really didn’t want to because Owen does NOT transfer well (and never has—I think twice in his lifetime he actually went back to sleep after we moved him) but against my better judgment I let Tom move him.

And at first it seemed okay. For the first two minutes anyway. Until we were watching on the monitor and he was chattering. Then sitting up. Then playing. Then reading his books.

Yeah…no nap today.

But at least I got a super cute few pictures. :**:

Making cupcakes!

Owen had found our formula mixer (which is out since Tom uses it to mix his coffee) and then grabbed one of Tom’s coffee pods from the drawer and was putting the two together saying “Making cupcakes!” I’m not exactly sure where he got the idea of cupcakes, though somewhat recently I know he was watching something on Food Network with Tom about snacks… So I got the idea to actually make cupcakes.

I got it all set up and the hardest part was getting Owen to kneel on the chair at the counter—he wanted to sit (too low) or stand (too high and wobbly on our bar-height chairs) but we eventually got it worked out. First he helped me dump the measuring cup of water, oil, and eggs into the bowl (though I had to keep a hand on it so it didn’t all end up on the floor). The whole time (from now until the end) he just kept saying “Making cupcakes. Making cupcakes! Making cupcakes!”

Then he used the mixer, which he actually did pretty well with:

Then it was off to fill the cups. He helped me put all the liners in the pan, and then after I did the first tray of 12, he got to do this tray:

Still working on it:

The mess wasn’t too bad (none got on him, the chair, or the floor) so that was a bonus! And he had a blast!

First blood draw!

Wow. I’m amazed.

Owen was a total ROCK STAR getting his blood drawn for the very first time this morning. I expected the absolute worst…and though it didn’t start on a positive note (he didn’t want to get on the exam table for ANYTHING), it went well!

There were three techs in there (since I had told them it was his first time) and they asked me to hold him down in case he freaked out so I basically just leaned over the table and held his legs and chest…but I distracted him by telling him about the ice cream treat he would get and they distracted him by talking to him about the fish on the walls and he didn’t even feel the needle.

He didn’t flinch.
He didn’t squirm.
He didn’t cry.

In fact, he even pretended to sleep (snoring) when I suggested it. And afterwards, he picked green tape and loved it! He had to hold his arm out for just about everyone to see!

The treat I promised him for being good at the doctor! Not too many ice cream places are open at 9am, so we went to the commissary!

Showers!

Owen now likes to take showers with mom and dad. 😐

It started a few weeks ago when he became intrigued by me taking a shower—I usually grab my five-minute shower while he’s watching TV and playing in the morning, and at first he asked what I was doing and then it turned into him telling me “Taking a shower!” Cute, right? I thought he might want to get in, but I was saved by the fact that he didn’t really want anything to do with getting in while it was running (though he’d gladly go in afterwards).

So this weekend when Tom was home, Owen desperately wanted to get in the shower with Tom. He actually let us get him undressed and walked into the shower…but wasn’t crazy about the water coming from above—and kept opening the door trying to get out. But he did like spraying the handheld part at Tom and the doors…just not on himself. That was Saturday morning.

Fast forward to this morning, when Owen desperately wanted to take a shower when I did. I told him if he could get undressed all by himself, he could take a shower with me—guessing that it wouldn’t happen because he really doesn’t know how to get undressed by himself yet.

Ha.

I was obviously completely wrong. He had his pants off in about 10 seconds (though that’s one thing we have been working on so that wasn’t a big stretch)…but then he was seriously taking his T-shirt off, which he always has given up on before! I did have to give him a small clue about bending his arm to pull it out of the short sleeve, but otherwise he got it all by himself! Okay then, I guess he earned a shower!

By this time, Tom had wandered back into the bathroom and saw what was going on and took Owen’s diaper off. And this time he LOVED getting his head wet with the handheld shower, let me wash his hair, and soaped himself! He didn’t want to get out! And loves saying he took a shower!

So now if I want to shower alone, I have to do it before he wakes up or during his nap!

Bestest haircut experience yet!

Owen did absolutely phenomenal during his first buzz cut—even sitting alone, on a booster seat, and wearing the cape! ALL FIRSTS! I guess Raoul (see Cars 2 car in last photo) was a good motivator!?

Watching Raoul very closely.

Sitting oh-so still WHILE she used the clippers. He HATES clippers and has freaked out every other time we’ve tried to use them. Tom and I were stunned.

He even smiled on command!

Look at all that hair!!

I think he really looks like Alex here…

VICTORY! Raoul is his!

First Official Ice Cream Cone

I think anyway. 😮 I was pretty sure it was…but the more I think about it, I just can’t recall. Oh well. It was still cute.

We were at DQ so it was soft serve—and he did pretty good, though he likes to bite the ice cream instead of lick it. We’d show him how to lick it and he’d try but not quite get it. I think I only had to clean it up once. 🙂

Owen’s first dental appointment

Owen did great at his first dentist appointment—not perfect, but they said he was better than some 10 year olds! It took some convincing to get him to sit in the chair, and then more convincing to wear the lead robe for x-rays, and he wanted Backyardigans on the computer monitor—but there was no whining and no tantrums, so I consider it a major success! They even said that x-rays at this point are more to get him used to the idea rather than getting actual usable x-rays, so it was no big deal that they only really got one good one. And they were able to clean all his teeth and the dentist said they all look good! YAY OWEN!

Owen’s 3rd Birthday Party!

Owen’s birthday cake—he was so excited he wouldn’t stop jumping for me to get a good picture! (It was made by an acquaintance of ours. I decided to splurge this year and have someone else make it so it was his first REAL birthday cake!)

Peeking at his cake

This is what it looked like after I decorated it with his own Cars cars (while he napped):

Since he had so many presents, we started opening them before the party. He loved the bowling pins from Grandma Marsha and Uncle Rob! (After we played with them as actual bowling items, they turned into soldiers!)

I have no idea why he plugs his ears, but it happens often:

Drinking out of his new big boy Cars cup!

“Happy birthday to you…”

Trying to blow out his candles…

We didn’t get a group picture, but we celebrated with Papa, Grannie, Dad, Mom—and our good friends Roger and Ursula and their kids Virginia and Caroline!

First full sentence!

Owen just said his first honest-to-goodness full-on sentence with no prompting from me!

He always says things like “milk please” or “piggies please” (Olivia)—and I always tell him he needs to say “Mama, can I watch piggies, please?” etc. He tries but mangles everything together, so over the past few days I’ve started slowing it down and having him repeat every word after me, which he does just fine (then mangles it when he tries it all at once). I also tell him he needs to ask/say please on his own without me prompting him each time.

So we were just downstairs after breakfast and he kept saying “mama upstairs, mama upstairs” and I was ignoring him, waiting for him to either ask please or offer his version of a full sentence…when he stopped, looked very thoughtful, then slowly and clearly said “Mama…can…I…watch…piggies?”

Yay!! 🙂

I found a cracker Owen doesn’t like!

I found a cracker that Owen doesn’t like—Chicken in a Biscuit. Of course he was really interested in what I was eating, so I handed him two and after getting it near his mouth and licking it, he shoved it back in the box before I could stop him. Then he tried the second one :??:  😀 and handed it back saying “No thank you, mama.”

Trick or Treating

We were sitting at the table eating dinner when the costumed kids started up and down the street…and Owen was the first to see them as he announced “WITCH! WITCH!” I asked if he wanted to go get treats and he said yes so I said we had to go put his costume on. He ran off saying “Shoes! Shoes!” So we got the costume on, he sat still for me to draw his nose and whiskers on, and then was super excited to see that I had a Lightning McQueen bag for him!

We went outside and there was a HUGE group of kids walking by (“KIDS!”) and he just watched them intently while saying “Costume party! Costume party!” (I’m not entirely sure where he picked up the idea of a costume party, but I’m sure it had to be one of his shows that I don’t pay close attention to.) He was more interested in watching the kids than anything else, so we hung out in the yard and driveway for a good 10 minutes before he was ready to head down the street. (Unfortunately, Tom is away for work, so it was just me and Owen.)

After we hit the first house (our friends and next door neighbors), he was READY. TO. GO! He had his McQueen bag in one hand and a toy jet in the other (which he held the entire night).

Mom with her dalmation

After we hit the few houses on our street, I thought we might be done (because to hit any other houses, it would be a bit of a walk for him) so I asked him if he wanted to go home or if he wanted more treats. Without hesitation, he immediately said “More treats!” So off we went!

He did awesome holding his bag the entire time and not dropping it (or any candy!) and he did REALLY well saying trick or treat—at the beginning I had to take him right to the door and tell him when to say it (and to say thank you), but by the end of the night, he pretty much knew he had to go up to the door or the people (most were sitting on the porch) and then say thank you.

Of course, at some houses, people let the kids pick their own treats from the bowl and he didn’t get it at first—the first house that offered, he just stood there like Why aren’t you putting anything in my bag? but then he slowly took one…and then another…and another. It was so cute—and the guy was laughing. After, at other houses, he gently picked one out.

I learned that he does not like motion-activated fog machines at all, but he loves pumpkins and ghosts (which we already knew) and pointed them ALL out to me. Of course, just about everyone commented how cute he was. 🙂 As we were on our way home, we ran into our neighbors who commented how cute he was and that their daughter had been a dalmation, too. I said “Yes, I know—we got this costume from you [at your garage sale]!” He got a laugh out of that. Then he noticed the gray clouds and said “Storm! Storm!” (Again, I have NO idea where he picked up the idea of dark clouds predicting a storm!) But I agreed that a storm might be coming…and as it turned out, it started raining about 20 minutes after we got home!

He had the best time playing with his candy—treats! treats!—it all got dumped out on my bed and then he was pushing it around and saying CRASH!

He didn’t do as much sorting as I thought he would (he just picked out the suckers) and it was only a matter of minutes before he wanted to eat one. So we shared a bite-sized Kit Kat and then he ate a tiny Nestle Crunch bar.

So overall it was a very fun night…and I can’t wait until next year! Hopefully Tom will be here to experience it with us!

Freak occurrence or the start of the terrible threes?

So in our normal morning routine, I was in my bedroom doing stuff and Owen was running hither and yon playing and hiding and whatnot. He was gone for a little while but I don’t worry because I can usually still hear him.

So he comes in the room holding out his hand and saying “STINKY!” And I look and—yep, poop. Smeared all over his hand. UGH! The little bugger had stuck his hand down his dirty diaper! (I had actually been a little worried about this the past few days, as I had noticed him with his hand down there…but then I thought “Why would he do that? He’s NEVER done that!” and then kinda forgot about it. Until today.)

So I marched him into his room (making sure to take him by the wrist so he couldn’t touch anything) and wiped him down, changed his diaper, and changed his clothes. Thankfully none had made it outside the diaper…yes, I thanked my lucky stars…and he just kept saying STINKY! and POOP IN THE TOILET! (which is what he always says when he poops—he knows that’s where it goes but he doesn’t care about actually getting it there). Then we went and washed our hands in the sink.

Please keep your fingers crossed that this was a freak occurrence. PLEASE.

Fire trucks, a helicopter, and robot, oh my!

Our local volunteer fire department had an open house and we thought Owen would love it since he loves big trucks (especially fire trucks) so off we went. And of course, since we were SO excited about it (for him) he wasn’t nearly as thrilled as we hoped he’d be with his first up close and personal viewing. Even with the helicopter. Kids!

He had to take his B with him.

B!

He wasn’t too sure about the dog…then got closer…and eventually did give him a high five, but that was it and then he was done!

Unsure about the dog
Getting closer to the dog

I think he had more fun with the bracelet and the cone, for as much interaction as he had with it!

Sitting in the helicopter (after a bit of coercion).

Getting tired (it was very close to nap time).

Sitting in the fire truck!

Pressing the button to turn on the fire truck!

Turning on the fire engine

It was really noisy and he didn’t really like it—but there was a very brief moment of calm where I got this great shot…

A brief moment of calm

…before he was DONE, which you can see by him pointing his finger down!

Done!

Walking back towards the exit, we saw the robot (and you know how much he LOVES robots!) but again, he gets shy or a little freaked out—and he didn’t get very close.

Unsure about the robot

Hopefully he still had fun…because we did!

Sunglasses, pizza, and Skype!

He saw these sunglasses sitting on the counter and has co-opted them as his own. He was super excited to wear them and wore them around the house for quite some time. He just LOVES them.

Tonight was the first night we gave him mini slices of pizza instead of cut up pieces—and he seemed to do just fine!

The glasses make another appearance during a Skype call with Grandma Marsha and Uncle Rob!

Owen, where’s your diaper?

So I had left off Owen’s PJ bottoms since I had anticipated potty training activities today and wanted it to be as easy as possible. After the tantrum, I just left them off.

So imagine my surprise when I came upstairs with his pre-nap snack…and saw his diaper on the couch next to him! He was just sitting there watching TV.

WHAT?

Yeah, it’s the first time he’s EVER taken off his diaper!

So of course I proceeded to put that diaper RIGHT BACK ON. Lordy. I hope it doesn’t become a habit!
