Getting Owen cleaned out: Day 1

The hospital finally called about 10:30 and my sitter came over and even though I was mostly packed and prepped, we didn’t leave until noon (and that included turning around—thankfully before we left the subdivision—to get his B that he forgot to grab).

They weighed and measured him—holy
cow! He’s at 59.8# and 46″ tall!

Just chilling, waiting.

20130825-152526.jpg

You can see where I get to sleep in the background.

20130825-152626.jpg

Once he was watching TV he was okay…but he did keep asking for snacks. Poor kid…the last thing he ate was cereal for breakfast. I was going to give him a snack on the way then forgot…and of course all he can have is clear liquids.

I talked to the doctor and she’s really nice. Gave her the quick run through on his status. Of course, the past few days—that he’s been completely off Miralax—he’s pooped just fine…so I was thinking the Miralax was the issue. But…he had pooping issues before the Miralax so we really need to do this to make sure we’re starting from scratch. The doc agreed, saying the X-ray would, of course, show us what was going on.

Getting the X-ray—it came right to us!

20130825-152854.jpg

Then it was more waiting. And then the doc came and said “Oh yes. He needs it.” She took me back to see the X-ray. She said it’s not that bad, but you can definitely see it in the lower part of his intestine. So I went back and explained to Owen that the picture showed he had lots of poop in his body—and he wanted to see it. So I took him down to see it and the doctor explained it to him as well. By the time I finished talking to the doctor I came back to see this:

20130825-154818.jpg

Yeah, he loves the adjustable bed. 🙂

Then he was playing doctor with his patients. He diagnosed the turtle with something-I-couldn’t-decipher-poopinosis. Thank you, Doc McStuffins. 🙂

20130825-155031.jpg

Then. Unfortunately, it was time for the blood draw and tube down the nose. He was a rock star with the blood…

20130825-163935.jpg

And LOVED his special Spider-Man webbing…

20130825-164030.jpg

And then they started the drugs. And it was hilarious seeing him loopy.

But then the torture began. Three people holding him down (while he was wrapped in a cocoon) while one nurse tried to insert the tube. And she couldn’t get it. She tried twice. Then another nurse tried. Then they went to a smaller, shorter tube—which went really quickly, but he was already through the roof. Poor kid.

20130825-171537.jpg

Then back in the room he was a hot mess. Part of it was the meds, but most of it was just him not being comfortable or having any fun. He didn’t want his B, the TV, a movie, or any of his prizes. He didn’t want me to sit with him. He didn’t want dinner (which is good since he can’t have any).

The hardest part is he’d be calm one minute then crying the next saying “I don’t want this [the port in his arm] anymore.” Or “Can I take this [the tube] out now?”

One of his calm moments watching TV:

20130825-172217.jpg

Then he’d ask to see what was on his face so I’d show him and/or take a picture.

20130825-174042.jpg

Everyone has been nice and the place is quiet, but there’s a lot of waiting. At our 3.5 hour mark (after arrival), he still wasn’t even getting the stuff to make him poop. I know there’s a process…but I wanted it to go faster. 🙁

This is where he landed since he didn’t want to be in his bed.

20130825-172830.jpg

He actually told me to take a picture!

20130825-174117.jpg

Then they delivered his “clear liquids” dinner. I got him excited about the “orange ice cream” but he didn’t like it. And of course he said no to trying jello and broth. And I knew he wouldn’t like the tea or cranberry juice. Since I was starving I had the broth (my only option for food on a Sunday night is in the main hospital—and I’m not sure I want to leave him alone…and I forgot to bring snacks). I also tried the orange italian dessert and honestly can’t blame him for not liking it. The lemon jello wasn’t thrilling, either.

Then they came back to take another X-ray to make sure the tube was in correctly (it was).

So while I was trying to work on this blog post, I kept getting errors. Come to find out:

20130825-175533.jpg

SERIOUSLY? Adult and pornography? I called the number and didn’t get anywhere. The guy couldn’t do anything (he said “it’s Sunday—no one is here”). And he had no idea if anyone would do anything anyway. So, so much for using free wifi. 😐

Owen finally asked for some juice about 6—then drank an apple and grape juice—then seemed in better spirits. I “took a walk” to check out the vending machines and ended up with cheese crackers. I guess that’s dinner. Though I did check out the cafe menu for tomorrow…and I’m definitely eating there. 🙂

After about an hour or so, Owen announced he wasn’t cranky anymore. 🙂 And then he had more fun playing with the bed and was just watching TV.

20130825-214220.jpg

They started the IV about 7 and when he wasn’t pooping by 9 they increased the medicine. As we’re going to bed now (9:30) he still hasn’t pooped…so I anticipate a sleepless and messy night.

Yeah, speaking of being here overnight…there’s no way I could NOT stay overnight (I laugh now that I was even considering it). And obviously no one is in the room with him aside from me—plus he has to drag the IV with him—so I’ll be doing all that. Which I’m fine with…but they should really tell you that beforehand. Of course I’ll have zero problems paging the Nurse if there are any messes. 🙂 (But she told me to page her when he gets up so she can take his vitals then instead of waking him up.)

So, two cute stories:

I needed to hit the vending machines earlier so I made sure Owen was okay that I was leaving for a few minutes. Sure, no problem. A little while later I told him I “needed to go for a walk to stretch my legs” (which really meant another trip to the vending machine) and he says “Don’t be a stranger!” Where does he get this stuff?! 🙂

He loved his Spider-Man web hand, but wanted to take it off since it was interfering with him holding his juice. So we took it off but then he had to go potty. Well, somehow, in the 10′ round trip between the bed and toilet we lost the glove. I searched but it was nowhere! So I had to hunt down a nurse to ask for more webbing.

Nurse: Oh, does he need it for his IV?
Me: No, he lost his Spider-Man hand.
Nurse, chuckling: Ahhh! No problem.

And with that…good night.

Owen’s first new foods week!

We put “try a new food” on Owen’s chore chart this week. He tried:

  1. avocado
  2. ham and cheese sandwich
  3. cotton candy
  4. popcorn chicken
  5. spaghetti with butter

The two days he missed were the only two “holes” on his chart for the week.

The only one he really truly liked was the popcorn chicken. He came back for more, then asked for it at breakfast the next morning (we had a few as leftovers —a mom had brought them to pool playgroup). He said he liked the spaghetti (it was fun to eat) but he refused a second bite. The others were definite NOs. But he’s so frustratingly finicky that he flat out refused to try chicken fingers—even though I said they tasted exactly like the popcorn chicken.

Pool Day

We had an invite for the beach today, but I just am not ready to take Katie and Owen to the beach. Owen would be fine, but I have no idea if Katie will be a content to sit and play in the sand baby or if she’d be a run up and down the beach baby—and didn’t really have the energy to find out today…so I passed…but invited others over for the pool. One mom came over (the same one who went out to dinner with me on my anniversary) and it was great.

Getting ready for the sun:

20130821-173336.jpg

This is what happened when I asked the kids to pose. She did and Owen looks like he’s attacking her! 🙂

20130821-171904.jpg

Unfortunately, Katie was a total crankypants—the first time since she’s started this recent teething episode. But she liked the watermelon (and wanted to share, as you will see in the video).

I finally got out the baby pool we had when Owen was little (Tom just found it before he left):

And it was HOT. And with the running around with the kids and getting the air compressor out of the shed, yada yada yada, I really wanted to go in the pool. Ruth said “Sure, go ahead!” So I did! I spent about 15 minutes in with the kids—and Ruth even got Katie into a swim diaper and then brought her to the pool with us! Then Ruth even got in up to her knees to cool off. It was really, really great and I appreciated it immensely!

A bouncy good time!

We decided to give the bounce place another try since some of the moms were going. Owen HATED it before but that was two years ago so I was willing to try it. I explained it would be like the big water slides but without water. He seemed interested so I kept my fingers crossed.

We walked in and once he saw everything, he was almost vibrating with excitement! YAY!

Cheese and crackers

Sometimes, Owen’s lack of food diversity just gets to me and I force him to try something new. (Well, I couldn’t actually FORCE him but I really lay on the guilt and maybe threaten to take pizza away if he doesn’t start trying and eating more new foods.) I just get tired of the same thing night after night—hot dogs, frozen pizza, or PB&J. And I get tired of making THREE meals (Katie will eat some of what I eat but not everything—she still has her own finger foods).

So, what Owen usually does is take a bite, look excited and say “Mmmm!” and then says “I like it!”…but when you ask if he wants more he says no…99% of the time.

So tonight we went through the rigamarole.

Me: Owen, do you want a piece of cheese? Katie loves it.
Owen: No thank you.
Me: You ate it before and said it was good.
He sees I’m giving Katie a Ritz.
Owen: Can I have a cracker?
Me: Only if you have a piece of cheese on it.
Owen: Oh, okay.
I put the cheese on the cracker and hand it to him. He touches the cheese with his tongue.
Me: Owen, take a bite.
He takes a bite and his eyes light up.
Me: Do you like it?
Owen: Yes! It’s good!
Me: Then eat the rest [three more crackers with cheese].

20130815-104430.jpg

AND HE DID! Of course, the big test will be to see if he eats it again.

Goodbyes

Tom’s unit wasn’t scheduled to depart until 6:30-7, but we went about 4:30 because the waiting was just THE WORST. I knew we wouldn’t stay the entire time (to actually see them off) because I knew I couldn’t keep from breaking down that long. And it was about eleventy billion degrees and humid and the kids needed to eat dinner. Tom was perfectly okay with an early goodbye.

This is what the staging area looked like (forgive the bad pictures—I only had my phone)—piles and piles of bags and gear, hundreds of people, and lots of trucks.

Of course, now that Katie can walk, she really did NOT want to be held…so we just let her roam and she had a blast. She had a few tumbles because the ground was fairly uneven—but she didn’t let that stop her!

More than a few people commented on how cute she was, how cute her dress was, and how good she was at walking.

2013-08-08deploymentday2

That’s Tom taking her picture.

2013-08-08deploymentday08

Then as I was trying to get a picture of Tom and Katie, one of Tom’s buddies stepped in to take a family picture. Amazingly, he took two and one was halfway good!

2013-08-08deploymentday09

Hugging daddy before getting in the car. I know he understands that Tom is leaving, but I really thought he’d be a bit more emotional—but he seemed kind of lackadaisical about it.

2013-08-08deploymentday10

Then Tom and I hugged and kissed goodbye, he walked off, and I got in the car…and Owen started crying. 🙁 I got out to give him some tissue and a kiss, and of course seeing him break down made it worse for me…

THANKFULLY it didn’t last too long—we passed by a playground on the way off base and he said he wanted to go! Well, it was too late for that one (I wanted to be closer to home if either of them got tantrum-y) so I took a different route home so we could stop at a playground…

Katie is a walking fool!

Today she just started walking across rooms like it’s cool. She still drops to crawl a lot, but she can definitely walk if she thinks about it. And it’s terribly cute. 🙂

Of course, I didn’t have my phone on me all the times she did it…so I’ll definitely get a video tomorrow!

Here’s one attempted video where she looked like she might walk…but didn’t. 🙂

Movie #2

Today we took Owen to see Turbo — he’s been seeing commercials for it and really wanted to see it. So, he was excited…but this happened on the way there since it was around what would be his nap time…

20130802-203853.jpg

Thankfully he woke up easily and still wanted to go to the movie! It was a regular movie (i.e. not sensory-friendly) and we were concerned how he’d handle it…but he did just fine. He didn’t even want his noise-canceling headphones!

20130802-203531.jpg

He did get a little fidgety towards the end (“Is it time to go yet?”) but overall he was great.

My only issue was the $8 matinee ticket prices. EIGHT DOLLARS! FOR A MATINEE! /get off my lawn

But I’ll definitely take him to a movie or two while Tom is gone.

Owen’s first movie!

The local autism society hosts “sensory friendly” movies at our theater—lowered volume, not completely dark, no ads or previews, you can get up and walk around, and you can bring your own snacks—which we thought would be a great first experience just in case

As we were wandering around showing him the lobby, he immediately noticed the Planes sign and was very excited. 🙂

20130727-224114.jpg

Today’s showing was Despicable Me 2—and he was excited because he likes the minions.

20130727-095042.jpg

20130727-095323.jpg

And…he loved the movie and did REALLY well. He didn’t talk that much and only got up once. He did ask for popcorn after his crackers were gone…so Tom bought the cheapest $7 bag…and Owen ate about six pieces. Which means we got to eat it (though I’m not complaining—it was delicious).

He did SUCH a good job that we stopped to get ice cream on the way home.

20130727-130745.jpg

And since he did such a great job, we’ll try to take him to one more regular movie before Tom leaves…

So, overall…the sensory-friendly movie experience was…interesting. For the most part it was okay but there were more than a few very young (read: too young) kids there who were running around. Now, this showing was meant for allowing that…which I understand. But really, if on a basic level your child is too young to sit still for even 15 minutes of a movie—and you’re constantly chasing them or herding them—I don’t think they should be there–even if it’s a more friendly version. There were also lots of crying babies/kids and noisy older kids…which I was okay with the older kids (this was an autism event after all) but the babies? Still no excuse…but I know some were there because the parents didn’t want to get a sitter. (The people next to us brought SIX kids—three of which were too young IMO.)

So while it was okay and Owen enjoyed it, I’m hoping he’ll do okay at a “real” movie…so we can hopefully avoid some of the other shenanigans.

Great Wolf Lodge, Day 1

I had been planning on heading to Great Wolf Lodge when Tom returned from Afghanistan…but he suggested we go beforehand. So he took two days off work and we headed up this morning. I had the brilliant (if I do say so myself) idea of taking our babysitter, Virginia, along for an extra pair of hands and eyes…and as it turned out, it was completely AMAZING—it was great being able to pay more attention to Owen (who will remember it) and be able to take tons of pictures (though Virginia is in most of the pics with Katie!). But seriously, Virginia was awesome with Katie the whole time—even when we weren’t actually at the water park.

So without further ado, the pictures.

Proof we were actually here, LOL—though this picture was taken as we were checking out. 🙂

2013-07-24greatwolf134

We splurged and got a Kid Cabin suite—complete with log cabin bunk beds and a day bed (and their own TV which we never even used). Owen was excited about his own room/bed and testing out the bunk bed steps. He didn’t make it to the top because he was too scared. 🙂

The view of the outdoor pool area from our third-floor balcony.

2013-07-23greatwolf003

Katie was (of course) intrigued by the new annoying band on her ankle.

2013-07-23greatwolf004

Sneaking one of my fries. Tom ran to get us Chick-Fil-A while we got settled and into suits. We figured we’d be eating at the hotel enough (and spending enough money on overpriced food) that fast food was acceptable for our first lunch.

2013-07-23greatwolf005

Waiting in her 2T suit. We had brought her 12m suit (that Grauntie Rose got her for her birthday) and I actually put it on her but it was really too tight.

2013-07-23greatwolf006

Ready to go with Miss Virginia!

2013-07-23greatwolf007

She SEEMS to be interested in the bubblers, but unfortunately it only lasted about seven seconds (if that). She just wanted to MOVE. This is where Virginia came in really handy.

2013-07-23greatwolf009

Owen liked them quite a bit, however.

2013-07-23greatwolf011

Of course, she was more entranced with the hole that had no water coming out of it…

2013-07-23greatwolf013

This is how Owen watched the 1,000-gallon dump bucket—far away from the action on the sidelines…

2013-07-23greatwolf014

…in the bubblers. 🙂

2013-07-23greatwolf016

One of the few things Katie could reach and was semi interested in.

This is where she liked to crawl.

2013-07-23greatwolf022

Making sure I actually get in a photo!

2013-07-23greatwolf024

She LOVED the lazy river (Owen hates it with a passion—he has some strange fear about inner tubes).

2013-07-23greatwolf025

2013-07-23greatwolf026

The outside frog slide that he loved!

2013-07-23greatwolf027

Just hanging out. I cropped the pic so he appears closer than he really was. He was pretty far out. I love that he’s old enough we can let him do that and not worry or freak out.

2013-07-23greatwolf028

It was about this time that Tom and I decided to splurge on drinks from the bar…since it was right there and all…and it was HOT outside. Yeah, we only had one drink because while they were certainly tasty, they were NOT worth the price. But, as a bonus, while we were standing there waiting for the drinks and Tom was holding Katie, she peed on him. (She had a swim diaper on, but they can only hold so much.) 🙂

I then had Virginia take a family shot—and she only took three and one of them came out really well!

2013-07-23greatwolf029

This is how Katie crawled most of the time—her knees were sore (yours would be, too, if you were crawling on cement!) so she would kind of drag one leg while actually putting the other foot down (if you look closely you can see the foot prints on the right side).

Owen on his favorite indoor slides. It was terribly hard to get good pictures of this due to timing and the new camera that I wasn’t totally familiar with the best settings to get the best shot. So lots of the future shots might look a little off. I did the best I could. 🙂

2013-07-23greatwolf069

2013-07-23greatwolf070

Katie had only slept about an hour in the car and then didn’t get an afternoon nap at all…so we were hoping it would help her fall asleep quickly. And it did…she only screeched for about four minutes before she was out cold. I’m sure Owen wasn’t too far behind, and Virginia even put away her laptop and went to bed about 9:20. Tom and I turned our phones off about 10:30 as we were exhausted, too. However, I didn’t have a great night’s sleep…I tossed and turned and it felt like I had slept a loooong time but when I looked at the clock it was 1am. Ugh. The cycling of the A/C pretty much kept me up/woke me up—when it was running, it was COLD and you needed to be under the covers…and when it was off, it was WARM and you didn’t want the covers on. Plus my back hurt (as usual) from the car ride and what carrying of Katie I did (though Virginia did most of it). Plus it was only a Queen bed. So I knew I’d be exhausted the next morning…

Deckwarming & Katie’s Third First Birthday

Today was the big day of our Deckwarming party (and Tom’s going away party) as well as a mini celebration of Katie’s first birthday (technically her third first birthday as we already celebrated in Michigan, then she had her actual birthday on the 10th, and then today’s gathering). It was a long, hot, tiring—yet fun—day.

Party-prep is so much work—it never seems like stuff will take that long…but it always does. I was VERY thankful to have hired Virginia to come watch the kids while we did the prep because then I didn’t have to listen to Katie screaming because I wasn’t paying attention to her…and I was actually able to get stuff done! I loved what Virginia posted on Facebook—it’s classic Owen:

2013-07-13virginiaowenconvo

As usual, we had too much food (or maybe just not enough people?!) but then, I’m a Len and we apparently don’t know how to cook for less than 40 people (or are paranoid about not having enough food regardless of the number of people). 🙂 But everything was delicious.

The weather actually held out—it was touch and go for awhile with intermittent thunderstorms pretty much all morning and early afternoon—but it cleared up about 4 and was sunny and gorgeous (though the humidity was right at about 99%).

We had a good blend of old (Mitchells and Trimbles) and new friends (from my mommy group) and the kids had a blast in the playroom and in the pool.

Then it was time for the birthday cake. I had wanted to do something special for Katie so she didn’t fall into that “second kid gets squat compared to the first kid” thing PLUS after Owen’s Lego cake debacle I had decided I was never attempting to bake a cake again…so I asked our friend Ursula to make a cake. She has recently started making and decorating cakes and she’s ABSOLUTELY AMAZING (as opposed to my first attempt—see above Lego debacle post). Here’s the picture I sent her (that I found on Pinterest) along with her version on the right (I asked for the 1 on top instead of the ladybug and only two layers):

Amazing, right?

Also a big thanks to mommy-group friend Jacqueline who helped with my last-minute ice cream request (Doh! How could we have forgotten ice cream on our three trips to town?!) and pre-party kitchen cleanup (she arrived during the last 15-minute rush to get everything done, saw I was a bit overwhelmed, and jumped in to wash the sink full of dishes).

She made such a mess that we had to hose off the deck (thanks, Roger!) and give her a quick bath in the sink with Dawn detergent (I hadn’t planned ahead to have baby soap downstairs). Here she is somewhat cleaned up, back with Virginia again.

Since Owen was having so much fun in the pool and with the kids, we let him stay up late. This is about 9:30 right before he finally went to bed.

Thanks to everyone who shared the day with me and Tom!! And you can tell we’re all getting older…everyone had gone home by 10:15!! 🙂

Happy first birthday, Katie!

First outfit of the day…a white onesie (with design that could be covered up by the sticker) from Gramma Jean. I didn’t put her in the matching pants because they clashed with the sticker. 🙂

Here you can see the actual onesie. She started ripping the sticker off after the first 100 photos. 🙂 This is also where she loves to play—the coat rack. I’m not sure what she’ll do when we finally get hooks attached to the bottom level for their coats!

Post-nap outfit change! This one is from Grauntie Sue! It’s scary because it’s size 18mo and fits pretty well.

Katie’s first five steps!

So all day I’ve been trying to get Katie to walk—to no avail. Tom comes home and was playing with her and I was in the kitchen and he yells “She’s walking! She just took four steps!”

Of course she did. 😐

I’m home all day every day yet she chooses to walk in the first five minutes she’s alone with daddy. Stinker.

So we immediately tried to get her to so it again—which is usually the kiss if death—but she did it!

So she took her first real steps the day before her first birthday!!

Owen advances in the pool!

So Owen and I went in the pool when Katie went down for her morning nap. I worked with him on sticking his nose under to blow bubbles…which he eventually did. I really tried to get him to stick his whole face under—even tried getting him to plug his nose to do so—but he was having NONE of it. Okay, fine, I was content with what we had achieved.

Fast forward to Katie going to bed for the night and all three of us get in the pool. I had gotten a new waterproof camera so I wanted to test it out.

2013-07-05kids061

2013-07-05kids062

I told him to stick his face under—and you can see he barely got his chin and the very tip of his nose.

2013-07-05kids063

2013-07-05kids064

So then I told him to show daddy what he learned with me today—and imagine my surprise when we witnessed this:

WHAT?! He went under JUST like that! Like he’d been doing it all summer or something. The stinker!

Poppers & Fire Snakes

Tom bought some little firework-type stuff to show Owen…and also to hopefully desensitize him to those noises.

The poppers bothered him at first, but then he got right into it and loved it!

Then it was time for the snakes! He thought they were cool, too…and called them fire snakes and poop snakes (since they really quite look like poop when they’re done). And then of course he was being a ham.

Unexpected Molar!

So we knew that Katie was getting some new teeth (see last teething post from a few days ago: Katie’s Teeth) but imagine my complete shock and surprise when I happened to take this picture…

2013-06-28unexpectedmolarbig

…and looked at it later, blown up:

2013-06-28unexpectedmolar

HOLY CRAP! That’s a molar coming in! That’s ahead of schedule…and no wonder she wasn’t eating and was fussier than normal! Poor kid! So these are the two new teeth breaking through on vacation:

Just my luck.

Katie has never really had diarrhea.

Until today.

When I took her to visit my mom and her friends at someone else’s house.

Without a diaper bag because we were only going to be there for 20-30 minutes.

😐

Needless to say my mom had to run me home, I sent her back with carpet cleaner, I had to give Katie a bath (first one by myself!), and then put all of our clothes in the laundry.

We didn’t attempt to go back because with my luck it would happen all over again—or worse. At least all the people there have had kids of their own (or had enough experience with kids) that it wasn’t really a big deal to anyone.

Happy Early Birthday, Katie!

Also amazingly, she didn’t make much of a mess. Yes, SHE got messy, but she ate the whole piece and none hit the floor!

Katie’s first birthday shirt

Since we were on vacation with access to all the grandparents (and Uncle Rob and Grauntie Marge) we decided to celebrate Katie’s first birthday a little early (just three weeks!). She has a few “first birthday” shirts to wear so we started with the same onesie Owen wore for his first birthday:

Family Reunion

Since we typically miss the Christmas get-together, we got everyone together for dinner in Bay City!

Owen did okay getting back in the car again but Katie was. not. thrilled. and let us know. 🙁 However, during one moment in which Katie was momentarily quiet, we heard Owen pope up: “Good job, Katie. You’re being patient.” 🙂

Everyone adored Katie and most of them said she was a mini Jenny (we still don’t see it).

Katie in a fancy dress… Lisa brought a few bins of 3T clothes for me to sort through for Katie—a bunch of which were winter clothes and fancy dresses (which we don’t need) but this dress was SO cute I had to put her in it just for a few pictures. She loved it!

2013-06-17kids054

Owen had SOOO much fun he didn’t want to leave, but we had to drive back to Grayling… The big test was to see how the kids did sleeping in the car and being taken directly into bed…which they both passed with flying colors!
