Our Office Christmas Dinner

Our Christmas dinner this year was at Port City Chop House—a premier steak house in neighboring Wilmington. I had actually been there once before, in 2004, for a Builder Appreciation dinner when Tom was deployed…and was eagerly anticipating returning with him. The food there is TO DIE FOR.

We started with a few bottles of wine and (I think) five appetizers, including two orders of Oysters Rockefeller, Baked Crab Dip, Sashimi Tuna, and a Crabmeat Cocktail. And more wine. And soups and salads (I had Fresh Mozzarella and Tomato). And more wine. I think everyone got some form of steak, and a few of us got Tide & Tundra, which included a Tristan lobster tail (I think the waiter said it was Australian), and it was the biggest lobster tail I have ever seen in my life!! I also got an Oscar accompaniment. And then we had more wine. And then four “desserts for two” including the Mile High Chocolate Suicide Cake, Colossal Carrot Cake, New York Style Cheesecake, and White Chocolate CrΓ©me Brulee. And more wine. 88| (At one point, I asked the waiter just how much wine they stocked, as we were on our [I think] fourth bottle of a particular Reisling and the waiter said they had one bottle left!)

Let’s just say the bill for our table of eight, with tip, was a hair over $800. We would go back by ourselves for dinner (chicken or pasta only) with no appetizers, drinks, or desserts!!

We had a great time, though—we exchanged our gifts and shared a lot of laughs. There are some pictures, too…but we won’t go there. Thankfully Jennie was our designated driver so the ride home was fairly uneventful (except when her husband gave Sue and John a bare moon doing 75 down the highway).

I hate going on vacation…

…because at work, the weeks leading up to my vacation completely suck. I am steadily working on all my to-dos through January 1, but of course that isn’t good enough. Suddenly, about 30 listings come out of the woodwork. They’ve been on our “coming soon” list for three months and I’ve been asking about them for the past month—but now that my vacation is one measly week away, it’s time to list ALL of our coming soon houses. WHAT THE HELL?

There is really no way I can get all the listing paperwork done PLUS enter all the listings in the MLS in one week. Well, maybe if I didn’t have anything else to do like answer the phone or work on my other to-dos. The stupid thing is that if I was going to be here, I’m guessing I wouldn’t have all those to do—I’d get a few here and there but nowhere near 30 in one week. And it’s not like we don’t have any inventory right now, so these would be our only listings. And it’s not like this is a busy time of year. And it’s not like this vacation was a surprise—they’ve known about it for two months now…

So, in addition to having to complete three week’s worth of activities over the next week, I will also have a month’s worth of listings to do in the same week. Someone shoot me.

Oh! And on top of all that, a 20-minute what-should-have-been-a-painless project turned into a FOUR-HOUR project. 88|

You know, I wonder what they would do if I ever had to be gone spur-of-the-moment for that long? I think they would survive just fine…so why the rush with all this work?

Stymied at every turn!

So I had THE BEST idea for Christmas gifts for the parents this year…

EXCEPT I didn’t make my mind up until too late that I was going to get it for everyone, so I only had one.

And of course, I wanted the same exact thing…

EXCEPT I couldn’t find it anywhere locally for the same price [I got for the first one] so looked at other similar things (to make life easier)…

EXCEPT the things just weren’t what I wanted so they got returned.

So then I decided to just order what I wanted online…

EXCEPT I found that three stores had it and had to make a decision: Do I shop at the store where I get the absolute cheapest price (but comes with a mail-in rebate)? Or do I shop at the store with a bit higher price, but where I earn almost enough points for a $25 gift certificate? Or do I shop at the store with a middle-of-the-road price that makes for easy returns (just in case)?

So I decided to go with the $25 gift certificate offer…

EXCEPT shipping was 5-10 business days at that store…which, if it happens to be more than 10 days…we’re screwed (since we’ll be on our way to Michigan) and then no one gets presents.

EXCEPT I decided to have it shipped to my office, on the off chance it doesn’t make it in time, they can reship it to me.

I never thought buying two additional presents would be so hard! :>>

Two and a half weeks!

So I was at work today and Jen, my co-worker, said something about a project we were working on—mentioning that she’d like to get it done before I leave on vacation…”in two and a half weeks!”

Wait.

What?

OH MY…it really is only two and a half weeks away! Now, while that’s extremely wonderful to think about, it’s also scary because I am not ready! I know it won’t take much to pack and whatnot, but the time has just flown and I can’t believe we’ll be in Michigan in three weeks!!

A Successful Santa Stalking!

An online board that I belong to did Secret Santas again this year, and I decided to participate since I actually have become move involved with the board since last Christmas. There was a whopping 115 people participating—including quite a few I didn’t really know—so chances were I’d have to do some “stalking” to do to find [what I hoped] was the perfect gift. (Now, by stalking, I mean researching past posts that person had written, seeing what their interests were, and deciding on a gift.) And on a board that is heavily participated in with subjects of all varieties, this could have been a very lengthy process indeed.

So everyone was excited and counting down the days until the names were drawn! I got someone I didn’t really know, but someone who I had at least heard of and posted semi-frequently! And the stalking began! And as luck would have it, I found a great hint within the first 10 minutes of searching! I kept stalking, however, in the hopes I would find something better, but it never happened—and I thought “Why waste any more time on this when I already have a great gift idea?!”

What was it, you ask? What was the perfect gift? Well, it was pre-Thanksgiving time and there had been a few posts about casseroles—actually, I had started one asking something about the typical green bean casserole…and then due to that thread, someone else started a thread about casseroles in general…to which my person had replied, simply:

Yum! Not only do I like eating them, I like making them.

And from that simple comment, it was off to Amazon! As I tried to decide which of the numerous casserole cookbooks to purchase, it turned out my additional stalking had come in handy—from his comments on Riedel wine glasses, new granite countertops, and a recent visit to a trendy and expensive restaurant, I gathered he had a sense of refinement about him…so I went with the Cook’s Illustrated cookbook Cover & Bake (which I then proceeded to put on my own wishlist!) and a 4-qt Pyrex casserole dish!!

We’re not supposed to open our gifts until December 22, but apparently he has about as much willpower as I do sometimes, and he already opened them and emailed me to thank me—and tell me I did an excellent job stalking!!

Phew!

Now I just have to wait to receive my gift….and wonder what my Secret Santa is learning about me from stalking!

So, how was YOUR Black Friday?

Everything I wanted was available online, so I set the alarm for 5:55am and was at the computer by 6am placing orders! It sucked to get up this early—especially when Tom initially said he’d go to town to pick up anything I wanted…then renegged when I said we could do the shopping online (stinker!).

The only minor snafu is that I decided to add another DVD to one order at the last minute and assumed that since I chose “pick up” for the first DVD, it would automatically select “pick up” for the second DVD—which it didn’t, so I had to pay an extra $1.79 for delivery. πŸ™ That’s what I get for trying to shop when I’m barely awake! (It’s still a decent deal, but I should have had both shipped or both picked up, just for ease.) I just kick myself for not paying attention!

So, how was YOUR Black Friday?

Happy Thanksgiving!

There are waaaaay too many good smells coming from our kitchen today—and we’re not even having Thanksgiving at our house!

I decided to make another loaf of Spaghetti Bread this morning, so we were smelling italian seasoning, garlic, and parmesean…

Then I made a new cornbread recipe (Tomatillo Cheddar Cornbread) for our breakfast—delish!—so we were smelling spicy-ish mexican.

Then, while both of those things were going, I toasted some pecans and coconut for the Sweet Potato casserole I’m making for dinner at our neighbor’s this afternoon!

I love cooking and baking!!!!!

What a cool surprise!

So I got the mail tonight and there was a small box from my mom. I knew just from the size and shape that it was a “check box” but I knew she wouldn’t be sending me checks! :)) So, imagine my complete and total surprise to open it and find…….pumpkin seeds!! πŸ˜€ I had mentioned when they were here visiting that I loved pumpkin seeds but never made them—but that I loved hers! She remembered…and sent me some!

FRANKS, MOM!!! πŸ˜‰

Not as fun as it used to be?

I think I might be getting over my love of Halloween, or I might be getting crochety in my old age, or something else, but…. I think I could live without the handing out of the candy anymore.

To start with, people started showing up WHEN OUR LIGHTS WERE STILL OFF AND THE PUMPKIN WASN’T LIT. What gives? When we’re ready, we’ll look ready. (It was actually a neighbor and she said “Well I saw lights on inside.” Grrrr.) So as we were turning on the lights and lighting the pumpkin, a whole slew of people showed up so it was pure chaos.

Then, half the kids didn’t even say Trick or Treat, just rang the bell and stood there when I opened the door (all ages, not just young ones who might be clueless). Quite a few didn’t even ring the bell and just stood outside (we heard them approach because we were in the dining room listening with the window open). Then, of course there are the little ones who don’t know the drill and don’t move once you give them the candy—I had like three of these who just stood there looking at me like they wanted more candy and I said “I already gave you your candy, let the other kids get in here.”

And it’s not like we were really bombarded, but it was hard to take the time to look at all the costumes, which is the best part.

Maybe I would be more into the whole thing if Tom was, but he’s usually off doing his own thing. At least this year he sat with me in the dining room working on the laptop while I handed out treats!

Anyway, I was handing out 2-3 small pieces to everyone and only had a handful left when we turned the lights out at 7…we couldn’t have had more than 30 kids.

Long-lost treasure!

So as I mentioned, mom and David brought down one of my old dressers. Well, of course, all of the drawers were filled to the brim—assorted stuff having accumulated over the multiple years it has sat in the basement waiting for me to have a home of my own to store it in. (It really didn’t matter to mom when I told her that, even though we have a big house, it’s already full to the brim. πŸ™‚ ) So, due to space issues, we ended up giving the dresser away to a coworker—figuring who better than a 4-year-old girl to enjoy a Barbie-pink dresser?

my old pink dresser

But that meant I had to empty out the drawers. And find space to put all that stuff. But oh, did I have a grand time looking at everything, like…

  • A “memory book” detailing “The Blizzard of 1982” — each of us in the class had to write what we did over the three-day surprise snow break and then it was mimeographed (yes, mimeographed—not copied!) for everyone and made into a book. A book with construction paper covers and tied with yarn, but a book nonetheless!
  • An “autograph book” from the last days of school, circa 5th grade (I can tell because my teacher signed it). Heck, I think I had everyone at the school sign it, down to secretaries and janitors, I think! Hilarious. One funny thing? One of the kids in my class signed it…and I swear, his handwriting never changed through our senior year. Two neat things? I obviously carried on getting autographs after school, because both my Grandma Smith and Grandpa Len signed it. :'(
  • A periodic table of the elements from my chemistry class in high school… Why would I keep that? It has a story, of course! Which I remember like it was yesterday. The day our teacher was handing out copies of the periodic table to the class, it was my birthday (technically, it was Friday the 29th, but since we wouldn’t be in school on my birthday, my friends had put in the announcement for Friday). So, because it was my birthday, the teacher gave me his only color copy. I was the envy of the class. (Keep in mind, this was before the prevalence of internet research and color copies. What the teacher gave you is what you had.)
  • A letter from my dad, circa 1994. I haven’t reread this one yet!
  • Two cartons of my pysanky attempts, along with two kistas, an unopened box of dyes from Aunt Marge (I was always waiting until I had my own house/space to make all the dyes…I guess I have that now, don’t I?), and an egg-drying rack.
  • Four photo albums of Tom #1 era pictures. As you can imagine, that had some good and bad memories attached…but they were still fun to look at.
  • Three sticker books! (Don’t tell me you don’t know or remember sticker books…they were ALL the rage.) I still hate to part with these, but why on earth would I keep them?! I should just pass them on to Virginia who would surely love them. After I scan the pages into my computer, of course. πŸ™‚
  • Two books of Sniglets. Yes, you remember Sniglets, too. You can admit it.
  • A brand new soup bowl/plate set that was a gift from my boss back in Traverse City 10 years ago (I’m rounding down).
  • But the best was the photo album Grandma Smith made for me probably 20 years ago…which I thought I had lost. After her funeral this summer, I looked high and low for it and couldn’t find it. I was devastated, because I could remember it clear as day—just not where it was. It was NOWHERE in this house, which meant it hadn’t been at the last house… So when I opened the drawer and found that… Well, it was a good day.

The sad thing? I still don’t know where I’m going to put all this stuff!

Way short version of mom and David’s visit.

As you will read on the 10/28 entry, I lost my entire well-constructed thread with links and pictures…and there is NO WAY IN HELL I’m in any mood to even try to recreate it, so…without further ado, here’s the short version of their visit.

  1. They brought my old dresser and my old toybox because they were cleaning out the basement and I had to take my old stuff. They filled the toybox with Tom’s beer he requested, which I found funny.
  2. We cooked some great meals, as usual, plus ate at our favorite Thai restaurant. David made some yummy soup from leftovers and mom made Tom his favorite scones.
  3. Maggie LOVED grandma and I think grandma was surprised that she liked Maggie more than she thought she would.
  4. We went to our annual Halloween party/oyster feast at our friend’s house. We wore our new costumes and mom and David wore the scrubs that we had been banned from wearing again. My costume still needs some work, as it’s way too big and not slutty enough for what the costume should be (I couldn’t get enough cleavage).

The end.

P.S. You WON’T believe this, but I lost this post as well…another stupid error in the code. GRRRRR. There has to be something wrong with my cookies because this does NOT happen when I write in my blog at work. >:(

Who comes up with these sizes?

So our Halloween costumes arrived yesterday (here’s a preview):

Renaissance Nobleman Halloween CostumeMerchant Wife Halloween Costume

Tom’s costume is fine size-wise…but mine? It will work, but I don’t know who comes up with the sizes on these things.

I ordered one size larger than I thought I would need, just in case they ran small. Well, the skirt is probably three times as big as I need, the shirt is probably twice as big as I need…but the last piece, the black corset-type vest (which is definitely a more “fitted” piece)? Almost too small. So tell me why the hell you would have two out of the three outfit pieces be entirely too large and the last piece almost too small? I mean, if someone actually needed the entire skirt or the shirt (i.e. fit into it perfectly), there is NO WAY they would fit into the vest.

So, needless to say my costume is going to require some alterations… Since the skirt is way too big and the black vest is almost too small, the two pieces don’t fit toegether as they should (as seen in the picture) and you can see the white of the shirt between the two pieces, which looks just horrible. I’m thinking maybe I can safety pin the skirt to the vest or something? Mom will be here so maybe she will have a good idea!

I just hope we end up with some good pictures!!

Birthday Coldstone

So if you sign up at Coldstone Creamery, you can get a free Original Creations Love It ice cream concoction on your birthday. Tom and I went tonight to redeem my coupon.

To start, let me just say that I am not overly thrilled with Coldstone. I’ve been there a handful of times over the years, and no matter what I order, it never knocks my socks off. I know people LOVE it (Tom is one—he will kill for a Founders Favorite) so I keep thinking I must be missing something…so I keep trying it. I mean, what’s not to like? Great toppings mixed in with yummy ice cream…how bad can it be?

Of course, there are so many yummy-looking options on the menu that I always have a hard time deciding. While we were in line, I changed my mind back and forth probably 10 times, trying to decide between four or five different mixes. So I had FINALLY decided on Oreo Overload with one small modification (dark chocolate mint ice cream instead of sweet cream)…and the stupid lady in front of me took the last of the dark chocolate mint ice cream—and the next batch wasn’t ready yet! GRRRR! >:( So I just ordered it as is. And it was…less than thrilling. Again.

Halloween Costumes and Online Coupons

So we decided to order new Halloween costumes for this year, as we’ve been “doctors” the past three years…and well, okay, so maybe our party hosts have said flat out that we CANNOT show up in the same scrubs again!!

So, I found the perfect costume at the place I wanted (with a 40% off coupon no less!) back in August, but they didn’t have it in my size. Of course, it wasn’t back in stock by the time the coupon expired, so I started looking elsewhere…and today I finally got my butt in gear (since the party is EARLY this year) and ordered our new costumes.

And you know what the best part was? I searched for a coupon code and found one for 10%…but when I entered it, it gave me 30% off!! WOOHOO! BONUS!

It’s Official!

Well, according to the doctor’s office, I’m officially pregnant! Of course, I was 99.999999999999% sure before that, due to two (okay, three!) positive pregnancy tests. (I’m not that anal—I just still say the first one was inconclusive!) Tom knew I would be calling at 2pm to get the results, so he was calling at 2:15 to talk to me!

I was going to wait to tell my mom and David and dad and Linda when I got home, but I just couldn’t wait. I did have to wait until certain coworkers left the office, however, since I do not want this to be public knowledge yet…

I called mom and David first and they both picked up, as she was upstairs and he was downstairs—so I got to tell them both at the same time that I was pregnant. Mom didn’t believe me—she thought I was joking! I said “Why on earth would I joke about something like this?” I think she was just in shock!! Of course, she was very excited as well, as this will be her first “real” grandchild (the other four are technically David’s). The comment that sticks with me is mom telling me that “our visit worked” — meaning our visit to Grandma Len’s gravesite in July…

WARNING: πŸ˜₯ ALERT!

My grandmother (mom’s mother) died probably 25 years ago. When my cousin’s wife was having trouble conceiving, her father-in-law went to his mother-in-law’s grave (our grandma, above) and said a prayer and asked for some divine intervention in making his wife (grandma’s daughter) a grandma as well. Within a few months, my cousin was pregnant. That was about eight years ago, and I didn’t hear one word about this story until a few months ago when we were about to go home for my other grandmother’s funeral. My mom told me the story and then told me we would have to “go visit grandma, like [my uncle] did” (since all my grandparents are at the same cemetary, actually buried within 40 yards of one another). And we did. So, after three emotional days of my grandmother’s viewing/funeral/burial, we walked across the road and went to see my grandma and my mom said a little prayer and asked HER mom for help, saying she did such a great job with [my cousin and his wife]. That was in July. At that point, we had been trying for ten months. In August, I was pregnant.

Then I called dad and first wished him a Happy Birthday…then said I had a surprise for him. He was scared. I then told him he was going to be a grandpa and amazingly, he was at a loss for words (for just a few seconds, but still). Of course, he was very happy!

When I got home, Tom had gotten me the cutest card…saying he can’t wait to start this new experience with me!! Awwwww, I know! Then he called his mom to tell her that it was official (she was the only one who knew beforehand) and of course, she was thrilled as well!

We decided to wait a bit on telling everyone else, just in case anything bad should happen. It’s customary to wait until the end of the first trimester, so we’ll see if we can actually wait that long. I am pretty sure our close friends/neighbors will know before that, because there are always get-gethers and drinking…and if I am not drinking, they will surely suspect something!

Chinese for five years in a row!

So, as I’m sure I’ve mentioned before… after our wedding, we crashed at the hotel and then took a four-hour nap. When we woke up at 9pm, we were starving and didn’t want to eat at the Trillium (we would have had to get dressed up), so we went into town and Chinese sounded good, so we ate there.

Fast forward to our one year anniversary and without thinking we said “Let’s order from our favorite chinese place” — and only afterwards did we realize/remember we ate chinese the night of our wedding as well.

Ironically, about the same thing happened the third year — we couldn’t decide where to eat, so we picked our favorite chinese place — and again said “OH MY GOD! We did it again!”

The fourth year was planned, to keep with tradition.

This year, Tom planned to take me somewhere else we would LOVE to go, but I decided we really shouldn’t spend that much (it would have been probably $100—well worth it, but just so much money) so I said “Well, we might as well make it chinese!” and went to a chinese buffet place in town we’ve wanted to go to since we’ve lived here but haven’t made it.

So, after five years in a row, I’m pretty sure we have to do it now until we die. It’s a good thing we like chinese!

Wow. Just, wow!

So awhile back, my dad asked me where he should send something to make sure I get it. I assumed it was something of value, as he apparently didn’t want it sitting on our porch, so I said my office. This morning, I received a cryptic email saying “expect the package, you must wait to open it with Tom, and check out the numbers.”

Huh?

What?

Let me tell you, I was going NUTS waiting for it—and hoping it would arrive today instead of having to wait until Monday! I had no idea at all what it could be. NONE! So I was thrilled when the UPS guy brought it in. It was probably 2′ x 3′ x 3″ — and I still had no idea (it wasn’t that heavy and it shook a little bit).

I called Tom to tell him it had arrived and he had better stop on his way home!! Both Jane and Dick (my bosses) offered to open it for me, since there appeared to be no restrictions on anyone else opening it. I politely declined.

So Tom walked in about 3:00 and we tore into it. Imagine our total and utter surprise/shock/amazement to find this….

Kinkade print

A 12×16 signed and numbered canvas (32/1450—to commemorate my age when I received it!), Autumn on Mackinac Island, by Thomas Kinkade.

Turns out Linda was the driving force behind the purchase… she went into a local gallery and saw the sketch of the soon-to-be-completed piece and thought it would be perfect. Dad actually describes it much better:

Originally, we were in Petoskey for one of my appointments. When Linda picked me up after my appointment she said she wanted to show me something. Well we went to the T.K. gallery and she showed me a sketch of it. There were no prints even produced yet. She said what do you think of it and I said It would probably be very pretty when done but where were we going to hang it. She said, “It’s not for us silly, I want to give it to Jen for her birthday.” I immediately got up off the floor and said if it means that much to you, then it is a done deal. Needless to say, we still have the sketch (personally signed-maybe copied. I am not sure) and you “may” someday inherit it. T.K. was actually in Pestoskey but because of schedules we could not go meet him. But he had been to Mac. Island to make the sketch!

I am still floored. We are going to go get it framed this weekend and then find the perfect place to hang it (I have my ideas, but it means rearranging some things).

Easter A/C

Happy Easter! Happy A/C!

We finally turned the A/C on for the first time this year… we were cooking and having people over for Easter dinner and didn’t want it to be too ungodly hot in the house. We should have turned it on yesterday, as it was about 87 degrees, but it was pretty breezy and by the time we wanted it on, it was like 7:00 and already cooling down. Tonight, however, it’s nice and cool, so we’ve already turned it off! I’m always scared to turn it on for the first time because it seems like it never goes off after that….and I hate the bills!

Easter dinner was delicious and we had a good time. It wasn’t the Len Easter, but we did share the meal with two of our best friends, Roger and Ursula. Oh, and of course Virginia and Caroline. Remember Caroline? The 1.2# preemie? Here she is now:

Black Friday 2004

Look what I found while cleaning off my desk?

2004 Staples Christmas

I actually just got this a few months ago. We were at Staples and talking to Jobe (a manager—front row with glasses, pronounced Joe-bee) and I said I never got a copy of the picture, so he made me a color copy on the spot. I took a bunch of pictures of us all dressed up the following year (since it was my last day) but somewhere along the line the CDs were lost.

Don’t we all look like big dorks? :>>

Protein Power to the rescue!

It’s time. No more messing around! We started the low-carb plan again yesterday—we were both just so SICK of eating crap all the time! And apparently with us there’s no middle ground so it’s best if we quit the crap COLD TURKEY. (I can’t just eat a handful of chips. Consider yourself lucky if you can.) I already feel better, just knowing I have a good reason to say NO to anything I shouldn’t be eating—today was a test, too, as we had a birthday and the most yummilicious strawberry shortcake cake (we’ve had it a few times and I could honestly eat the whole thing it’s so good). I hope to lose another 60# in eight months like I did before (20# of which was weight I gained back). So, wish us luck!

Happy 3-month birthday, Maggie!

Maggie Birthday

Maggie is three months old today!! She has been growing like a weed—I swear she has doubled in size since we brought her home! She hasn’t quite doubled in weight yet, although she’s trying—she sneaks downstairs to eat the cats’ food quite a bit (the stinker!). We’re STILL working on potty training—just when we start to think she has it down, she’ll pee right outside the paper or we find poop somewhere! Grrrrrrrr. I know, the joys of owning a puppy. But she’s so totally adorable that it makes up for it—and to watch her play with her toys just brings a smile to your face! We are VERY glad we got her…

Happy New Year (almost)

Sorry I haven’t posted much lately… I’ve been quite sick and haven’t had the time or energy to be on the computer. It started just about two weeks ago with a sore throat that I thought might be strep—although the doc ruled it out, saying it was probably just an upper respiratory thing. Although I’m on Day #12 of not being completely healthy, it’s mainly just a dry cough which leaves my throat hurting…it’s not fun, but not nearly as awful as the four days I couldn’t even get out of bed and the five boxes of kleenex I went through and the many sleepless nights I had because I either couldn’t swallow, couldn’t stop blowing my nose, or couldn’t stop coughing. I haven’t been this sick in I can’t remember how long, and it really sucks…but it reminds me how great it is to be healthy.

So the holiday season wasn’t too fun this year…but here’s hoping the new year starts off with a bang. I’m planning on posting new “kid” pictures later this weekend, so stay tuned…

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to all! We wish we could have spent the time with our families, but since we couldn’t, we were with the next best thing—our friends here!

We had quite the feast—if possible, I think we had more food than our “mini-Thanksgiving” when dad and Lin were here!!! Unfortunately, most of the stuff I was making was last minute, so I had pretty much all day to do nothing! I did, however, make two things ahead of time.

So, 3:30 rolls around and I start preparing. Everything was going smoothly and on schedule, but it felt like I was forgetting something. I had put all the ingredients on the table so I knew I wasn’t forgetting anything (or so I thought). So 5:00 comes and everything is pretty much done except the stuffing, gravy, and corn. We all sat down to eat and everything was soooo good and there was soooo much…and we were all just making pigs of ourselves…and just about the time we were all finished, I said “OH MY GOD! I forgot two things!” I had forgotten the stuff I made ahead of time (and were in the refrigerator)—the pistachio jello salad and the deviled eggs (both things, ironically, that I have never before made—EVER!!). So, everyone then had to have more food… (I had to force them, you see… Yeah, right!)

We had TONS of leftovers (which is what I wanted)…I did about 8-10# of potatoes and one of those industrial-sized cans of green beans from Sams. (I also wanted to be able to send home leftovers!) It was all heavenly…

Our final menu:

  • deep-fried turkey injected with creole butter and rubbed with creole seasoned salt
  • mashed potatoes with loads of butter and sour cream
  • green bean casserole
  • candied yams with walnuts and marshmallows
  • corn bread muffins
  • stuffing (boxed, but altered with onions and celery)
  • corn
  • pistachio jello salad
  • deviled eggs
  • homemade macaroni and cheese (from Ursula)
  • homemade white chocolate chip/macademia nut cookies AND chocolate chocolate chip/walnut cookies (from Cindy)
  • two different ice creams (from Cindy, which we never even opened because we were so stuffed)
  • pumpkin pie (from Ursula, which we never even cut into because we were so stuffed)

All this for six people and one child. πŸ™‚ Like I said, leftovers.

Catching up…

So, apparently sometimes I’m in the mood to blog and sometimes I’m not. I just realized today that I hadn’t updated the blog since waiting for dad and Lin to arrive…10 days ago!

Turns out they didn’t expect us to be home (although I said we would be!) and they forgot I said to call from the airport! Anyway, they arrived about 4:30 and we gave them the grand tour and had dinner and visited. Most of their visit was spent relaxing, but we did have a great (what I called) mini-Thanksgiving Dinner… Linda had wanted to try deep-fried turkey so we turned it into a full-course meal and invited friends! We had turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, peas and corn, candied yams with marshmallows, pistachio fluff, orange jello, with carrot cake and ice cream for dessert! Everything was DELICIOUS! (It was also a trial run for our actual Thanksgiving dinner next week, which we’re hosting.)

After celebrating Thanksgiving Saturday night, we celebrated Christmas on Sunday by putting up the tree! Here, you can see Dad helping… :)) :>

Putting upo the tree

It was nice being able to celebrate two holidays in one weekend! We had a good time overall and enjoyed the visit!

My Pumpkin

2005 pumpkin

Since my poor pumpkin was left until almost the last possible minute this year (I normally have it done days, if not a week, in advance) I wanted to do something simple. As it was, I still screwed up the feet (if you look closely, he only has one foot)—the paper moved while I was poking my dots through the pattern! I probably could have done it free hand, but like I said, I wanted it to be simple!! I’d probably still be down there if I was doing it free hand…and I’d probably be crying from frustration. Tom lucked out and wasn’t here to help (he’s not much into the pumpkin-carving) but I think he would have rather been here at home than on duty! At least he’ll be around to help me pass out treats tomorrow night! I can’t wait to see how many kids we get…we’re in a fairly big neighborhood, so I’m expecting quite a few.

Honeymoon Cruise – Day 1

Kathryn and Izzy dropped us off at Holland America a little before one and we were through check-in and security by 1:30! I was really amazed at how easily the whole procedure was. The only thing I missed was getting a picture of the ship at the dock before boarding—it was a little bit of mass confusion once we arrived and handed off our baggage, so by the time I thought of it, we were already inside the hangar/warehouse and before you knew it, we were walking up the gangplank (do they still call it that?). Then it was off to find our room, except we didn’t have to look far—a steward (was that what he was called?) grabbed us and off we went!

Even though we knew ahead of time what the layout and size of the room was. We were still very surprised! There is a TON of closet space (room for all of our hanging clothes) plus room for all of our suitcases under the bed (so we don’t have to take up precious floor space). The balcony was great, as well—we were missing one chair, but before we barely had time to think about it, someone was delivering a chair! We can’t keep the door open (to hear the ocean) as I had hoped, but we do spend a good amount of time out here (I will write all daily drafts out there and will post later from one of the three wi-fi hotspots on board). The best surprise was the bathroom—it was MUCH larger than I EVER anticipated and has a medicine cabinet, detachable massager showerhead, and extra large bath towels!

We had a few hours to explore before the mandatory lifeboat drill at 4:15, so we wandered around the ship, turned in the necessary paperwork to the front office, scheduled our dinner reservation for the Pinnacle Grill (the fanciest restaurant on the ship—our package thankfully came with one dinner upgrade, otherwise it’s a $20 per person upcharge), and scheduled my birthday present at the spa—a hot stone massage! After the lifeboat drill, we had a short amount of time to prepare for dinner. It was a casual evening, so we didn’t have to do much! I had hoped to watch the departure from the Observation Deck on the 10th level (we’re on the 7th) but it was raining so that was not really an option. Instead, we chose to watch from our balcony—which was neat because you could look all around you and see everyone else on their balconies! I keep telling Tom it looks like a bunch of gophers with their heads sticking up out of their holes!

So, dinner…let me just say WOW. So we were waiting in line to get in and the greeter people (can’t remember what they were called!) look at your dining card and show you to your table. So they get to us (we were probably fifth in line) and right away, we sense something is different—instead of just having us follow them like everyone else, he made some comment like β€œI have to go see _____” or β€œI have to go ask ____” (I didn’t quite catch it). All I could think was β€œOh, great. Something is wrong.” As it was, we were a little paranoid about getting the seating request we had made—I had requested a table for two instead of the typical table for six or eight where you eat with other people…but we had heard someone earlier saying that their request had been denied. So, imagine our surprise when another greeter guy stepped in, saw the number on our card, and said something to the effect of β€œAh, a table for two, for the special couple, right this way!” EXCELLENT! And the food? Wow. Of course, everything started with bread and butter! We had two stewards (Mo and Al), a wine girl (Lillibeth), plus a manager-type person (Ruddin) came over, introduced himself, and said not to hesitate to contact him about ANYTHING we might be unhappy with. There were about four appetizers to choose from (I had crab salad on tomato and Tom had steamed mussels), three soups (I had chilled blueberry and Tom had hot island pepper), three salads (we had Caesar and spinach) and five or six main courses (I chose eggplant cannelloni parmigiano and Tom had prime rib—he said he could eat prime rib EVERY NIGHT…until he tried my eggplant and said he would have rather had that!). Dessert came later and there were about twelve choices—I actually skipped the chocolate cake (I know, can you believe it?) and had the apple strudel and Tom had a pineapple torte.

Then it was more wandering around the ship. We took a tour, signed up for wireless internet service (outrageous prices, of course), went to a free liquor tasting, visited the art gallery and signed up for the auction later in the week, took a gander at the casino, and ended the evening at a Mixology Class at the night club—which was an absolute blast. I hated to spend $10 a person, but we got to try four different signature drinks of Holland America cruise line. The first three were SPECTACULAR (Epic Spiced Daiquiri, Melon Drop, and a Tropical Tom [Collins])… but the last one (New-Fashioned Bermuda), made with either black rum or whiskey, was something I could not stomach. So, Tom, being the sport that he is, drank mine! We had some good laughs with the bartenders (excuse me, mixologists) and other guests.

Overall, we were very impressed with every aspect of the service. Our steward knew our names after having met us once and says β€œHello Hudsons” every time we pass in the hallway. We stopped at the front desk to ask for a second robe and it was there within the hour. We received turn-down service between the time we left for dinner (5:30) and the time we stopped back at the room after dinner (7:30). We needed laundry pickup (pressing, actually) and they were at our door within 10 minutes. Amazing. Of course, the thing that we don’t like are all the little extra fees for everything—$30 for a week’s worth of soda (Tom only—I can live with water), $20 for the mixology class, $10 for a photo (we didn’t like our boarding photo, thankfully), $30 and up for internet service, tips for spa treatments, because they aren’t technically part of the ship (should have thought about it, but didn’t), and the list goes on! The only thing we don’t have an issue with is the $20 gratuity per day—the staff here definitely deserves it!!

Birthday Dinner

For my birthday dinner, we went to The Cheesecake Factory. The girls were very good, but Izzy was really excited about it being my birthday and kept asking the waitress if my cake was ready!! We enjoyed a great dinner and then Izzy helped me blow out my candle on my Godiva Chocolate Cheesecake! We came home and after a bath (after the whipped cream from my “cake” both girls really needed it) played like crazy! I wasn’t sure if we were tiring them out or if they were tiring us out!?! A great day…

Here’s me with the girls before dinner:

birthday in boca

Great birthday so far!

I got up early this morning so I could see Anna and Izzy before they went to school (I slept in yesterday and missed them!). So what was the first thing I heard this morning? I got a loud “Happy birthday Aunt Jen I love you!” plus a giant hug from Izzy!! Add that to the totally precious singing of “Happy Birthday” from Gabby (via email) and all is well with the world!!
