An unexpected visitor!

The pressure washer knocked on the door to let me know he rustled a small bat out of a [box on the side of our house—a vent? filter?] and it was currently laying in the grass, stunned. Cool! So I took Owen out to see it (Katie was napping).

I should have put something in the pic for scale, but I was more concerned with getting a picture before he woke up and flew off (he’d already been out about 10-15 minutes). His body was about the size of a child’s fist.

I tried to flip him over (with our pooper scooper) which woke him up and he started hissing (?) at us. Owen said “GE HAS TEEFERS!” 🙂 Yes, he did!

Then I got him flipped over…

And a minute or so later he flew off. Owen was sad he didn’t get to say goodbye. 🙂

I’m still stunned.

Tonight I ordered pizza for dinner.

Me: Owen, do you want yogurt or do you want it plain?
Owen: Plain.
Me: Completely stunned.

After he ate his two pieces and was clearing his plate, he says “Mama! You forgot the yogurt!” I reminded him he said plain and he didn’t say anything else.

I still can’t believe he didn’t have yogurt. I mean, there are times he doesn’t have yogurt, but never at home!

Baseball Day 4

I didn’t take many pictures today because it was really hot and humid (the warmest day we had yet, if you can believe it). I did, however, take videos of Owen at bat and running some of the bases.

Katie amused herself by gathering used drinking cups. 🙂

We went straight home after eating (skipping the playground) because it was so stifling—and because Katie was TIRED (remember, her nap has been moved back to 11).

Owenisms 28

After getting in the car after school:
Owen: Hiiiiiii Miss Katie! I’ve been waiting for you to come back all day!!
Me: My heart melts.

We were playing Candyland and I got a really good card.
Owen: But I don’t want you to win.
Me: Why not?
Owen: Because you’re not nice.
Me: I’M NOT NICE?
Owen: Okay, you’re a little bit nice.

Owen is four years eight months old today!

I like his age now…I say “Owen, go sit on the couch so I can take a picture” and he says “Okay mama!” Getting him to smile nicely, however, is more of a chore as I get crazy smirks and head tilts and grins. But, I eventually get a good one!

And then AMAZINGLY I put Katie up there and I snapped about 30 pictures—and the very first one was the keeper!

Two new bedtimes!

So, Owen has been pretty much done with naps for awhile now, right? Right.

Until Pre-K started, apparently, when they have an hour scheduled for “rest” which can include a nap if they’re tired or just quiet time where they can draw or read.

So what do I read on his daily take-home sheet Monday? He slept. Okay, I thought, that was a fluke—maybe he was just really worn out or didn’t get a good night’s sleep. So, what did I read Tuesday? He slept. Hmmmm. Okay. And then today? HE SLEPT AGAIN! He has taken THREE naps this week!

So…I’m thinking he needs more sleep at night (even though he is already going to bed earlier and getting up at the same time—I haven’t had to wake him up for school once yet)…so I moved his bedtime to 7:30 instead of 8.

And since Katie WAS at 7:30 and I didn’t want them both going at the same time (a little rough on me), I moved her to 7—which is also likely a good thing because her daytime nap has moved back to 11 so she’s likely more tired at night.

And what might be the best bonus? More free time at night for me!

Playground Observations

I love how I never know what’s going to come out of his mouth.

We have the baseball playground (the playground next to where he plays baseball, of course!) and the playground that I typically refer to as “the one by Miss Katherine’s house” to which Owen usually replies “Big’s house?” which is true (Big is Katherine’s son) or “the one with the three slides” (yes).

But today after we had the typical exchange, he says “The one with the wood chips? Not the sand?” Um, wow. Yes. The baseball playground has sand and the other one has wood chips. Impressive.

My 12-hour iPhone restore drama.

Of course I’m leaving out LOTS of details…but suffice it to say it was NOT a fun experience. This was the error I kept seeing over and over and over and over…

2013-09-30itunescouldnotrestore

Or it appeared to have restored, but there were no folders so I had 20 pages of apps all in a mish-mash and was missing anywhere from 10-30GB of who-knows-what depending on which restore I was on. Rebuilding from scratch was an option…just not a desired one (it probably would take a good 4-5 solid hours to get it back to “normal”). So I kept soldiering on, hoping it would finally JUST WORK.

  • 11:53am—Doh! I am now without a phone for at least an hour…oops! In my excitement to get my new phone restored…I forgot it takes FOREVER. I hope there’s no pre-k emergencies today!
  • 3:35pm—Well, it’s on its second full restore…I expect another three hours. I am not happy.
  • 4:48pm—GRRR. I’m currently on my third restore attempt…maybe the third time will be the charm?
  • 5:12pm—Same error message. A 4S iOS6 backup should work on a 5S with iOS7, right? I’m already at the point of wanting to smash this thing with a hammer.
  • 6:16pm—Currently on 5th attempt. Next, I’ll try upgrading the 4S to iOS7 and THEN trying the restore.
  • 8:59pm—If anyone needs to get a hold of me until further notice, email is probably the best bet. Nine hours in and I STILL don’t have a working phone…
  • 11:43pm—After trying two new suggestions, I am setting it to restore one last time and going to bed…and keeping my fingers crossed.

I was posting as I went along on a forum I frequent and they were trying to help me. I’ve posted there many, many times about how technology hates me, and this was a PERFECT example. Someone posted this picture, which explains it just about perfectly (Robn is another user who always had odd issues that shouldn’t happen…but I’m obviously worse off):
