Spirit Week: Costume Day

He had wanted to be Superman up until last night when we were trying on all the costumes. He wanted to be the ninja except school has a NO WEAPONS policy and he didn’t want to wear the costume without the sword. So he agreed on Thor, which I was completely happy with since it was a costume from last year that he didn’t wear and this would be the last year he’d fit in it.

(Yes, Thor has a hammer. I asked if it was considered a weapon and they told me they were allowing it but it had to be put away except for during the parade.)

Katie’s first of three Halloween costumes.

Why does she have three costumes? I bought one last year when I found it cheap at the resale shop. Then later a friend said she’d send one her daughter didn’t use. Then I remembered we had saved the old costume of Owen’s but a friend had it—so she gave it back.

So we tried the friend’s costume today. It didn’t go over too well. She didn’t mind it terribly, but the hat part was too big and kept falling in her face. And she wouldn’t sit still with her legs out so you could see the cute cat feet.

And then she saw a roaming cat across the street and was excited about that…

So off she went.

Taking pictures of little ones in costumes is very hard when you have to be both the photographer and the retriever.

Spirit Week: 80s Day

Again, I had to ask for help in figuring out just what Owen could wear for 80s Day. We don’t have any neon, I can’t peg his pants (too hard for him to get out of if necessary), no big sunglasses, no legwarmers, no parachute pants, no penny loafers, no pastel tees and white jackets…and I refused to spend any money. I still can’t get over why they don’t have simple days like “hat day” or “backwards day” — seriously, 80s day? I’m guessing most of the parents were BORN in the 80s or later. :/

Anyway, these colors are much darker than I wanted them to be, but it was the only “set” that came anywhere close to matching. I tried putting gel in his hair but I have no experience with that and his hair is a little long. If I had planned ahead and practiced it might have worked better, but again, that’s a lot of work for pre-k spirit week. 🙂

The thing he was MOST excited about was his new ninja shoes (they’re ninja shoes because they came with a comic book that has ninjas in it). All morning he kept saying “I can’t wait to show everyone at school my new ninja shoes!”

What’s that beeping?

I came home from taking Owen to school this morning to hear some strange noise in the house. Hmmm, beeping. And unfamiliar beeping at that—it wasn’t a toy or the house alarm (which beeps after we lose power). I cautiously walked through the house listening carefully. The sliding door was open—was it coming from outside? No. It was coming from the living room. What is in there that could be beeping?!? Especially something that didn’t sound familiar. Then it hit me. The digital clock we have down here…it’s an alarm clock…that I picked up off the floor yesterday…because Katie had pulled it off…and she must have obviously played with it…and managed to turn the alarm on! Amazing, because even looking at the silly thing it took me a good minute to figure out how to turn it off (I mean, I hit snooze to silence it but had to turn it OFF). I am just thankful she didn’t accidentally set it for the middle of the night!

Spirit Week: Wacky Day

This week is Spirit Week at Owen’s Pre-K and I was clueless about the first day—Wacky Day. Wacky Day? Give me an Inside Out Day or a Backwards Day…but Wacky? After asking some other parents and getting some ideas (some of which we didn’t have the stuff for like hair paint), Owen was totally on board with it. He ended up with a backwards shirt mismatched with shorts, two different socks, two different shoes…and pig tails like Katie (except he wanted them out about 20 seconds after I put them in—I made him keep them in for pictures).

Cauliflower!

Since school started, Owen has been better about trying new foods. He often comes home saying he tried something new—and I generally confirm it by looking at the teachers’ notes on the menu (remember, I’ve asked them to notate what he eats). This has led to him also trying new foods at home (though he often says “No, new foods are for school!”)…or at the very least, we don’t have to FORCE him to try something.

So, tonight at dinner.

Me: Owen, I’d like you to try cauliflower.
Owen: No thank you.
Me: Yes, please.
Owen: I don’t want it.
Me: You’ll earn a badge and a piece of chocolate.
Owen: A BADGE AND CHOCOLATE? BOTH?!
Me: Yes. I’ll eat it with you.
Owen: Let’s race.
Me: Okay, go!
He eats his 1/2″ piece while I eat my 2″ piece.
Owen: Mmmm. Who won?
Me: I think you did—I’m still chewing!
Owen: Yay!
Me: YAY! Owen tried cauliflower!
Me & Owen: YAAAAAAY!!
Owen: Yay for myself!

Bowels of Steel: The Eruption

And Mr. Bowels of Steel just erupted. All across my carpet, him and his clothes, the bathroom floor, the toilet, etc. And he was even wearing a pull-up. A complete disaster. (He had diarrhea once already this morning and made it to the potty without incident…so I was not expecting this.)

Of course he doesn’t like having poop all over him so I ask “Wouldn’t it be easier and cleaner to just poop in the potty like a big boy so we didn’t have to do this?”

“BUT I DON’T LIKE POOPING IN THE POTTY.”

Breathe.
Breathe.
Breathe.

Now if you’ll excuse me, he needs a bath and I need to sanitize the bathroom and clean the carpets.

Bowels of Steel

I swear Owen has bowels of steel.

You remember the hospital? Two DAYS of Miralax before he started pooping.

Now? Three ex-lax and nine doses of Miralax since yesterday afternoon…and nothing’s happening yet. He really hasn’t pooped much over the last week so this clean out REALLY needs to happen. And he’d better empty out tomorrow, otherwise school Monday could be an absolute nightmare.

I can’t wait. 😐

Lego Minifig Consolidation Day

The day I pick to try and consolidate all of Owen’s Lego minifigs is the day I swear I will never buy him another one. He starts off thinking it’s going to be fun…then fizzles out about 20 minutes in and just wants to play.

This happens every few months. 😐

The top layer are fully-assembled figs; the bench holds figs that are missing something (could be just a knife or could be arms, legs, hair, hat, and a base). I am always flabbergasted at how many pieces are missing…and the number continues to grow.
