Hair washing day!

This morning was hair washing day. If you’re like me, it’s something you plan for. My hair is wavy but I like to wear it straight so I need to take things into consideration like the time it takes to air dry or if I have the energy to use a round brush and a hair dryer for 30 minutes.

Straightening my hair is a long process during which my arms get tired and I sweat (ha, my phone corrected that to swear and that’s sometimes true, too) and even then it’s hard to get the back or the roots straight. I would need a second set of arms plus at least another 15 minutes to really get it right. It’s exhausting.

But this morning? This morning was a delight. Today I tried the Dyson Airwrap and HOLY FORKING SHIRTBALLS it is a life changer!!

I let my hair air-dry for an hour then used the dryer attachment for like two minutes and then the hard brush attachment for less than 15 minutes. Straight hair, straight roots, no sweating, no sore arms. Sigh. 🥰

Tomorrow I throw away all my old styling implements and round brushes. Yippee!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻

P.S. If you Google the Dyson Airwrap, prepare for a minor heart attack. I had a good friend let me use her company discount so I got it a bit cheaper.

P.P.S. I’m in Mojave. Big surprise. 😂

Bleached ends be gone!!

So I did a thing.

I was finally ready to cut off all the bleached ends to get my hair healthy again—plus I’ve decided to stop coloring the purple… I love the purple, but I’ve decided to spend some of that money on my nails instead. 😜

Before:

After:

So I like it and it definitely feels healthier…but holy wah does it feel short!! It always surprises me how quickly simply cutting 4″ off the ends turns into 6″ or more once all the trimming and futzing is done.

I kinda feel more like an adult now (not sure if that’s good or bad 😂) but I also feel like I’m about 4-5 years younger because it’s been about that long since my hair was this short.

Also, I do love it straight but I actually can’t wait to wear it AS IS because it looked really cute… Stay tuned!

Owen’s Crazy Mohawk

So Owen has a mohawk but he never lets me put product in to actually show it off so I’ve just given up asking. But today…today he said it was Crazy Hair Day and had a smile on his face.

“Soooooo, can I do your hair today?!” And he smiled big and bright and said yes. So we washed it with purple shampoo, then I loaded it up with Gorilla Snot gel, and then sprayed it with not one…not two…but three hair colors.

My boy is growing up and slowly turning into a pre-teen before my eyes (he’s almost 11) so I’ll grab these chances to do something fun with him.

Her second haircut in seven years!

Seriously. Second haircut in seven years. She didn’t want to go but ended up loving it—and asked when she can go back to the salon while she was still in the chair. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Wet and dry…

It’s so bouncy now—she almost prances around. (I didn’t get a good front pic since it was so bright so I’ll keep my fingers crossed for good first day of school pics.)

Any bets on how often she’ll actually let me style it? She said she would let me but I’m not holding my breath.

I got my hair purple’d.

It was time, y’all. I last got my hair purple’d in November and I was getting tired of the bleached ends. Funny thing is that more than a few people told me they loved the light ends–that it was in style and people paid for that look. But honestly even though it’s from bleach, it reminds me that I’m going gray…and when it’s full on purple I feel younger. And feeling younger is always a good thing–I seem to have more pep in my step and a happier disposition.

What do you do to keep feeling young?

Katie cut her hair!

I’m crying. Katie brushed her hair on her own after her bath yesterday (something she’s done many times) and this is what I found on the floor by my sink when I went to bed. 😳 She decided to cut out a big knot instead of asking for help. And of course managed to cut way more hair than necessary.

The upsides are that she figured out a solution on her own and that with her crazy mess of curls we can’t even tell and she doesn’t need an emergency haircut.

It’s time for serious purple again!

Before:

I knew it desperately needed color, but I never look at the back of my head… YIKES! I guess it looks like I purposely lightened it, right? I can’t wait for the color…

Step 1: Haircut before color. About 3” gone. It already looks 100% better!

Step 2: Now sitting in front of the heater all foiled up to lighten the ends before adding color! (It took an hour to do all the foils!) Oh, the price of beauty!

Step 3: Drying the hair so the color has the best chance of staying. What’s interesting is that some of the old purple turned pink, not blue. Oh, and blonde is definitely not my color. 😂

Step 4: Color. Not one, not two, not three, but FOUR shades of purple: lilac, light purple, orchid, and amethyst.

After:

Step 5: Purple hair…that apparently cannot be photographed as our eyes see it. Not one of these pics do it justice. It’s a medium magenta to a purple, but the pics all show dark! You can get a glimpse of it in the weird-angle pics from my bathroom…so hoping tomorrow brings some natural sunlight to get better pics!

Sidenote 1: it’s very difficult to take pics of the back of your own head. 😂

Sidenote 2: Next time, plan for at least six hours. Five was not enough. 😳

But I looooove it!!!

Lilac-haired girl!

I put the purple hair wax in Katie’s hair when it was wet and it was easier to do… I didn’t want to put too much in the first time, so it ended up a nice shade of lilac.

UPDATE: It washed out of Owen’s hair fine. Katie’s hair had some VERY slight tint left but I didn’t scrub it. As far as my pillowcase? There was very super light transfer but I had to REALLY look. It’s more like a powder. But if I hadn’t been looking for it I wouldn’t have seen it. So I’m happy with it.

Purple hair trio!

I saw this super cool colored hair wax advertised online and went directly to Amazon to buy it. My hair has been fading and Katie has wanted more color than the pink shampoo I have been using on her. And this was very temporary—as in comes out in one wash. So we tried it! I did it Live on Facebook…which the kids thought was great fun (they are always intrigued when I do my Live LipSense demos so they liked being part of a video).

Here are our results… The kids loved it! Owen’s was much easier as it’s shorter, thicker, and much heartier. Katie’s was a mess because it is so fine and snarls easily (I’ll have to try hers later when it’s wet). But as something fun to do? I highly recommend it.

Ugh. What was I thinking?!

Minor in the grand scheme of things but I am really regretting cutting my hair. 🙁

As a general statement: I don’t love it but sometimes I kind of like it. In Virginia I was finally really liking it and I could style it decently and easily… And then I colored it and all that went away (the color was cool but it’s a bitch to take care of—colored shampoo creates a huge mess every time I shower, I need to do protein treatments to help it stay healthy and repair damage).

So it slowly grew out more and I started liking it again (I’d always wanted really long hair) but I came to realize the annoyances of long hair so was thinking about a change and after much (but apparently not quite enough) deliberation, got about five inches cut off. And now I’m back to not really liking it again. 🙁

Of course it looked good when the stylist finished but it’s just too short. And whether I leave it curly or straighten it myself it looks bad (to me). Last night Tom said it looks fine and I agree. Fine. Not bad but not good. Fine. Blah. And unfortunately my hair plays a big part of how I feel about myself so this really sucks. Yes it will grow but my hair takes forever so this is going to be painful. I’m now trying to decide if a minor cut will help or hurt more.

I feel like I keep sabotaging myself but at the time I get <whatever> done it seems perfectly reasonable.

😞

I hate that my hair causes me so much grief.

New hair and new color day!

A stylist posted on NextDoor looking for people to get their hair done for pics and videos for her website so I said why not. I’ve been itching for a small change for awhile and this was it (it’s the same style, just a bit shorter—I’m not going crazy!). We had a fun time…talked food and kids and lipstick and business ideas…and she surprised me with a new color layer under the purple! I was a little nervous in the chair because I haven’t gotten this much cut off in a looooong time…but it ended up awesome! Plus she snuck in a new color! (SERIOUSLY. She didn’t tell me until she was done!)

Of course it feels waaaaay shorter than it actually is and feels very strange but I’m sure I’ll get used to it quickly enough. 🙂

Why I was using 1990s mousse.

When you’re away from home and didn’t pack any hair product because you were planning on getting a blowout at the beauty school but they were closed for the holidays so you have to wash your hair at home and it’s not convenient to go to town so you have to rely on the hair products that are already here and all there is is mousse from high school. 😂

So then you post it to Facebook and a friend jokes:

And I was compelled to respond with this:

To cut or not?

Every once in awhile I will take a photo where my hair happens to look shorter…and I usually like it. Today was that day.

I don’t think I’d want to go much shorter than this…

But.

If what usually happens actually happens, I’ll now have a dream where I cut my hair short (or it accidentally gets cut short) and I completely freak out and wonder what the hell I was thinking.

That said, I am not planning on doing anything until the color starts coming out again…at a bare minimum. Stay tuned.

Time to revamp the mermaid hair!

The color didn’t last nearly as long as I’d hoped and I was not loving the bleached blonde look so it was time to fix it…and I wanted it done for the birthday ball so today was the day.

The new, more subtle colors. We opted to not use the same teal I had before so I could use a dark blue shampoo which will hopefully help the color last longer.

At this point (just about halfway in) she already needed to go mix more color. Yeah, I have a lot of hair.

Time to rinse and wash.

I know my hair is long but it looks sooo much longer when it’s professionally blown out and straightened.
