We had to run some errands on the far side of town around nap time…
Poop Knee
For the past few days my left knee has been a little sore and has felt like it just needs to crack and I wondered what I did to it…but today I had the AHA moment.
Yep, it’s messed up from kneeling on the (ceramic tiled) bathroom floor multiple times a day (at five minutes a pop) for almost two weeks while Owen poops. 😐
The bathroom is too small for a chair. The stool is uncomfortable (it hurts my butt plus there’s not that much room so getting up and down is hard plus getting up and down is hard enough at almost-40). So it looks like I get to stand…which doesn’t sound bad but really gets old and tiring FAST.
I’ve started calling it my Poop Knee. Think it will catch on?
So in the meantime, I’m walking almost with a limp, it STILL feels like it has to crack OR that it might just give out on me at any random moment, and I’m taking anti-inflammatories.
But the good news is that he’s pooping!!!!
EDITED TO ADD:
A friend asked why I don’t just sit outside the bathroom?
Well, we might get to that stage, but remember he is blowing balloons to “help” the process along. Which still doesn’t require me to be close…except he’s learned that if you blow hard enough and let go, the balloon takes flight and it’s HILARIOUS. If I want him to stay on the toilet I have to hand it back to him. Lather, rinse, repeat.
He IS getting better (even trying without the use of the balloon) but I still need to be close enough for SOME balloon retrieval and verbal prompting… I watch him closely and I think a lot of the time if I wasn’t right there reminding him he’d just end up sitting there halfway trying and not REALLY trying.
So if we can get the balloon thing under control, I’ll be able to move away. Baby steps. 🙂
Poooooooooolllllllll!!
Oh my goodness he was SO excited watching Tom get it ready and start filling it up…
I love the feet here.
And the face here.
Tentative first step…
Hey, this is fun!
Posing for mom’s request.
More splashing around.
“Can I take my shorts off?”
“I have to go potty!”
I tried to get a cute shot of his face with his butt blurry in the background…but for as scary smart as he is sometimes, he could NOT grasp that I wanted him to move his legs around. 🙂
Tom working on the walkway.
She LOVED the water and wanted to GO GO GO!
When she first got in, it was pretty shallow so she could kinda crawl/float around…and boy did she scoot quickly!
But since it was filling as we were in it, it obviously kept getting deeper…
…and she started taking on water!
And of course big brother was RIGHT there the whole time. He wanted to play with her SO badly!! And we taught him that if he sees Katie go under, the first thing he has to do is pull her up then scream for us if we’re not right there. 🙂
I sense a very wet summer for me…
On a sidenote, we’re trying a saltwater system this year. It’s supposed to be a lot easier since there’s no chemicals—just salt—and it’s less harsh on your skin and hair. We had to get a new filter system, but we’re still ahead of the game cost-wise compared to the neighborhood summer pool cost (heck, I think we might be ahead of the cost from last year still—not even including this year)!

Katie Kid
Another 9m summer outfit that we had to get on at least once before it doesn’t fit (though we have the same thing in a 12m ready to go)! I’m pretty sure Gramma Jean got both of them!
Owen LOVES to get in there with her. Silly kid.
Trying to appease the hungry beast without hauling out the high chair while still being outside and enjoying the weather… Of course, it was also a test to see if she’d leave everything (or most everything) on the plate. Ha. HA. HAHAHA. I think it lasted a minute or two at most. I did not, however, get a picture of the food scattered across the entire blanket!

Chocolate Milk Break
Owen is big enough now to get his own drinks (juice boxes or a cup if it’s already filled) out of the refrigerator. Today all that happened to be in there was chocolate milk (he doesn’t love it and rarely drinks it, but it was in there from when I hosted mommy group last week). So I expected him to bring one…but he brought two, saying, “Here mom, here’s one for you and one for me!”
How can you turn that down?
Apple Fail
So, Owen was eating an apple while we were hanging out outside. He’d eat a few bites then put it down and go play. Lather, rinse, repeat.
After awhile he comes up to me, holds it out, and asks “What is this?” And I see seeds and a tiny piece of apple remaining and quickly realize that he’s completely eaten the ENTIRE apple—core, seeds, and all—and is pointing at some seeds.
I then realize that we’ve apparently never taught him how to eat an apple. Which is actually believable since we usually cut them up for him and he never has eaten more than a few bites off a whole apple.

A great day to be outside!
Wow. Just wow.
Today was one of those rare North Carolina days where the weather is perfect, there’s a nice breeze, there’s no bugs, and it’s perfectly glorious to be outside…so we took full advantage of it!
I got out the kid enclosure our friends loaned us to put Katie on the deck under the umbrella (so I didn’t have to worry about sun) and she didn’t mind it too much.
And then he climbed in with Katie.
Meanwhile I was catching up on some of my big ol’ stack o’ magazines.
And Owen was running around playing with/snapping his Indiana Jones whip (something he’s not allowed to do inside), running around the yard, climbing on his playset, and playing with his army men* that he earned this morning for pooping. 🙂
And here you can see him in all his adorable action:
We came inside for a little bit because after her nap, Katie was NOT having it…but when daddy got home, we decided to eat dinner outside!! By then it was a little cooler but still definitely worth staying out to enjoy it.
Ahhh, spring!
* The army men were an unplanned surprise. They were a gift from Grandma Marsha probably two years ago (in a Diego backpack) that we just tucked away until he was old enough to play with them. And I had kinda forgotten about them as they were in Katie’s closet (Owen’s old closet). But today, Owen happened to be in her room with us and the closet doors were open and his inquisitive eyes glommed on to Diego RIGHT away: “What is this?!” 🙂 Then he opened it and found the army men…which I then immediately used as a potty training bribe!
I love that Tom can still make me laugh.
Today’s Break
Tickling Katie
I love noodles!
A brown stick!
In today’s TMI posting…
OWEN JUST POOPED AN ALMOST-PERFECT NORMAL POOP!
It was soft but in solid form and was a normal (yet slim) size! When Owen saw it, he said “A brown stick!”
Well…yes, I guess so, especially compared to what he’s been used to!
And no, I didn’t take a picture. Not even for Tom. 🙂
Please please please let this be the start of something approaching normal..
Playing School
We’ve started playing school while Katie takes her nap.
Today we had “lunch”—Owen put his fake food in the “oven” (the space under Katie’s jumper), told me to be patient while it cooked, then we shared everything—and then we did workbooks. He calls me Teacher Mom. 🙂
Then we had a visitor:
He’s pretty good at drawing lines and tracing, but completely loses interest in everything after about 15 minutes.
It’s also very frustrating trying to teach him how to hold a pencil/crayon/marker so I need to google tips on that.
I’m a puddle.
Owen: Mama, I love spending time with you.
Me: /heart melts
