Ignore the messy office…look at the little girl. She just sits and clicks and clicks and pounds the keyboard until 27 windows are open and it starts beeping from errors. 🙂

ABCMouse Level 4 Graduation
He has had an on again off again enjoyment of ABCMouse this summer, but lately he’s been ON again so he’s almost finished with Level 4. We told him he’d get a prize if he finished the level before school started…and as he saw his percentage complete increase, he got more and more excited. Earlier in the week he was at 77%. Today he was at 99%.
And then moments later…
Congratulations, Owen!
T-5 days until the pool closes…
Papa happened to call right as we were walking in, so I Skyped them back so they got to watch Owen do a few jumps and watch Katie swim around.
He kept doing this and I finally asked what he was doing… You’ll never guess. He was trying to do a somersault! 🙂 I told him I’d help him when we were in the big pool!
Katie saw Owen holding his nose, so she was trying to do the same thing!
The kids she had been playing with in the kiddie pool were going home, so she was at the fence saying “Guys! Guys? Where are you going?”
He loves just floating like this.
If you didn’t know he liked to do it, it might freak you out because he looks…well…dead.
This is how Owen moves across the pool when he’s not actually swimming.
And then it was time for the special surprise! Not only was daddy at the pool with us…but we ordered pizza for dinner! Poolside! (Ever since Owen saw the signs and saw someone have pizza delivered, he’s wanted us to do it. Since the pool season is almost over, today was the day!)
She loves being tossed in the air…but can’t quite manage to count to three. 🙂
My turn with Katie. The video isn’t that great (meaning Katie doesn’t appear to be having that much fun) but she really was…and it’s rare for me to actually be in a picture or video with the kids. So here it is. 🙂
I finally got a video of Katie getting out of and back in the pool. However, she only did it once. The other day, she just kept going up the ladder then back into the pool—time after time after time.
And the bonus to the whole day? I started talking with a girl at the pool (she was there with a little girl who Katie was playing with in the kiddie pool) and long story short, she’s a babysitter and lives in the neighborhood! WOOHOO!
And the funniest thing of the day? While I was at the kiddie pool talking to the girl, Tom came over to tell me what Owen had just said. Tom said they had a race across the length of the pool and of course Tom won, but when Owen finished, Tom asked if he was tired or if he wanted to go talk to me. Owen’s response? NO! I’M PUMPED UP! LET’S GO! 🙂
I never get tired of finding this.
Two going on…12?! It feels like I can see the future.
I think he’s teaching himself to read.
Because we certainly aren’t doing much with him—he rarely wants to read books with us anymore and I don’t see him ever reading books…but the other night, I opened a sight words app on the iPad just to see if he knew any…and he BLEW through most of them with ease:
run up can she the you he red go my this like
look and said move to come is play will big
on funny little ran good of are three down not
one have away at saw yellow here
So then I opened another sight words app that actually had sentences…and he got most of them right, too. Sentences like:
Do you want to play with me?
I saw Santa Claus.
The girl gave the kitten a hug.
I know how to cut paper.
I don’t like to drink milk.
My toy is here.
The rabbit will eat the grass.
What shall we eat this morning?
My dog ran away.
Of course he had a few stumbles on some words, but overall he impressed the shit out of me. (The app gives grade levels for the sight words/sentences and there were a variety of K-third grade level.)
How is he doing this? He mostly plays games on the iPad but we do make him do ABCMouse—so is the 15 minutes a day he’s been doing that responsible?! We’re just flummoxed.

Katie is scary smart.
She saw the iPad and said “Watch Daniel [Tiger] please.” So I handed it to her. She purposefully looked at all the folders then tapped one…then looked purposefully at the app icons and picked PBS Kids without hesitation. I didn’t even know Daniel Tiger was in the PBS kids app, let alone where it was.
My guys are talking!
These made Owen giggle!
I have an app on my phone where I can put faces in holes of characters—so I picked some Star Wars ones to surprise Owen. He loved them!
And he liked this one the best
I also did this one of Katie but it’s not that great.
And some fun with daddy and mommy!
It’s addicting!
Edited to add:
I redid this one of Owen now that I understand the app better.
To be blunt, it sucked.
How we relax as a techie family.
Oh, Siri. You know me better than I know myself.
ABC Mouse + a cat
Owen loves ABC Mouse!
So, we’ve been seeing commercials for ABCmouse.com for quite some time, plus Owen has some apps on the phone that are by ABC Mouse. I thought it would be a good thing, but honestly…Owen has never used a computer, our desktop is too hard to get to easily so we’d have to set up a laptop downstairs, then teach him how to use a mouse, etc., and lastly, pay the monthly fee and hope he’d use it. So it just never got done.
Fast forward a few months, and Tom brought it up again. So I just signed up for emails and quickly realized that they always send out deals. So I waited and waited…and finally there was some deal (I honestly don’t even remember what it was—maybe half off) so I signed up. And then we were getting the house ready for flooring and then we were on vacation and then we were cleaning up after the flooring…and I was getting annoyed because I had paid for it and we weren’t using it! Every time Owen had “free time” he was playing with his Legos or watching TV or on the weekend he’d be playing his video game.
So today after breakfast I declared it was time. I said “Owen, do you want to try ABC Mouse?” And got a resounding happy YES! So Tom set up my laptop at the kitchen table, hooked up his wireless mouse, and we started. (Big whoop, it took all of five minutes!) I was a little concerned that Owen would have issues with the mouse because A) he’s never used one (and he’s very used to the touch screen of the iDevices) and B) sometimes he has issues with fine motor control. But he did pretty good—the only mouse button somewhat tripping him up was the center scroll button so I told him just to avoid that button…but within about 10 minutes or so he was USING the button correctly (the laptop screen isn’t quite big enough so it helps to scroll). Wow. I was floored.
And he flew through the first few lessons and was thrilled to be earning tickets and white stars and prizes for his hamster and aquarium (on the site!). He probably sat there for 20-30 minutes! Then just like that he was done. And he complained that it was too easy. I told him I know it was too easy, but we started him on stuff for younger kids just until he got used to how the mouse worked and how the website worked. I told him when we did it again it would be for older kids and he was cool with that.
So fast forward about an hour and he was ready! I had moved it from age 2 to age 4 and he loved it! I wish I could watch over him as he does everything so I can see what all is involved, but I like that he’s doing it by himself and I don’t HAVE TO watch over him. He did say that one page was too hard so I replayed it so I could see what it was but by then he was already DONE and couldn’t give me a clue why he had thought it was too hard. (He had completed it, though, so it wasn’t too hard to finish.)
So, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that he keeps enjoying it!
I love the love.
40 Bags in 40 Days—Day 9
Today’s “bag” was a bunch of shredding and a bunch of scanning…so we lost about a ream of paper. Yeah, it doesn’t sound like much, but it was a lot of clutter in the office. YAY!
And all the scanned stuff went to Evernote (one of my favorite programs/apps ever) so I technically still have it!
🙂
40 Bags in 40 Days—Day 8
Today was a technology day—I cleaned out my email Inbox! I’m pretty good about keeping it somewhat empty by Archiving and Deleting, but it was getting out of control. A few 15-minute sessions throughout the day and I went from 750ish to 299! No, it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things—and it doesn’t help with decluttering the house—but it’s something instead of nothing!
