Owen’s walkabout
A little cat nap
We’ve been letting Owen skip his nap so he’ll fall asleep faster at night—sometimes he’s still up (in his bed, but awake) at 9:30-10:00—and for the most part it’s been fine. But today—especially after playing in the pool, I’m sure—he took a little catnap while watching the State game with daddy. It was soooo cute of course I had to take a picture.
And it was a true catnap—it couldn’t have been longer than 10 minutes.
Game Day at Grandma’s!
Tailgater down!
Early birthday presents!
We normally don’t buy each other birthday (or Christmas) presents—we just buy what we want throughout the year. But this year, I thought of the PERFECT gift(s) for Tom…and unfortunately, I kinda had to spoil it at almost the last minute to make sure he didn’t buy it himself! (He made a comment about “still needing to get” it and I just told him NOT to shop for anything the few weeks before his birthday. 😮
Tom wears my old (circa early 1990s) MSU jersey. Owen’s MSU jersey is too small (4T). I don’t have one (my old one doesn’t fit, which is why Tom wears it). MSU’s season opener is coming up soon. So I decided to get new jerseys for everyone (well, not for Katie—she has a onesie). I was going to get them all personalized, but not once I saw the price tag. 88| So, Tom just got one and the other two were from eBay. 🙂
I was going to wait until right before the game to give them to him (still before his birthday) but he had had a crappy day at work, so I decided it was time. And he LOVED them, of course…
When he saw that his was personalized, he says “How did you know my high school number was 72?!?” I said “I didn’t—I got your birth year!” (I should have kept my mouth shut to keep him really impressed—because truth be told, I never even THOUGHT about trying to find out what his number was.)
The best thing? Owen was even more excited than Tom was! He had to have his on right away, and then he made both of us put ours on, too. Then he and Tom had to play football in the living room (Owen is GREAT at recovering fumbles). And apparently his number is a quarterback number (or at least was from last season) so he thinks he’s a QB now. 🙂
Stay tuned for a family photo on game day.
What a little helper!
They must have mowed the course recently, because all of these putting green flags were in a big pile to the side of the green. Owen apparently didn’t like them there, so he put them ALL back in the holes!
Walk with Grandpa David
Grandpa David took Owen to feed the ducks!

Good shot!
Owen likes to walk down to the golf course and sometimes play on the “big hill” right off the putting green and first tee. There are often golfers there, so I’m teaching him to say “Good shot!” and clap when golfers tee off. They love it. Once in awhile, they even toss him a ball!
Walk Goodbyes
We headed out for a walk so Owen says “Goodbye Holly. Goodbye Acer. Goodbye Finn. Goodbye Grem. See you soon. Going for a walk!”
Owen wanted to take his cars for a walk…
I  this kid!

This was cute… He had been right in the middle of the bush, tickling himself with all the little buds…and he says “Look at all the tickles!”
Our morning stroll…
Covering his eyes while he counts—he wants me to go hide (even though we’re in the middle of a field)!
Chasing ducks!
Walk with papa and driving the police car!
Geting ready to head out on a walk with papa:
Back from a successful golf ball hunt/walk:
And finally driving the police car!! YAY! Unfortuately, he refuses to steer!
And then we finally got him steering! Somewhat. 🙂
Hiding on the golf course
He’s still got a lot to learn about hiding.
Golf course shenanigans!
While Tom and Marsha and Rob were out shopping this morning, Owen and I went for a walk to the golf course… (Sidenote: This is the only 3T outfit he has that still fits.)

“Machine!”

“Red! White! Yellow! Blue!” (Naming the colors on the sign.)

Hiding!

Another machine!

We were just about to head home when Owen started telling me his foot hurt. He hates wearing shoes so I thought he was just fooling me. But I unbuckled the sandal strap and felt around and didn’t see/feel anything that would be poking him so put it back on. He kept saying it hurt and I kept telling him nothing was wrong. He kept trying to get the shoe off himself so I finally took off the whole shoe…where I then saw a smashed red ant and three tiny bites. 🙁 Of course I felt like a horrible mom. Luckily when the shoes came off and the bug bite cream went on, he was totally fine.

Golf ball at the golf course!

We were on our daily walk to the golf course but had to step off the green to let actual golfers play through. They took an interest in Owen and asked if he’d like a golf ball. Well, you know him, he can talk up a storm if he’s in the mood, but heaven forbid a stranger ask him a question. 🙂 So I took his hand and walked him over and he took the ball and off he went. And wow did he have a blast—throwing it and chasing after it. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Just down the street at the golf course is a pond where ducks and geese hang out. We finally made it down there with some bread…

Last minute shopping.
No, it’s not what you think—I am not talking about Christmas shopping!
I am talking about not planning ahead and realizing we need a real snow shovel, and having to buy one IN PERSON at Lowe’s, instead of buying the same exact thing on Amazon for $15 less.
>:XX
I can almost golf!
With all the new house stuff, I forgot to talk about my golf clinic! I decided to go—I figured I had to, since this would be the decision-making event as to whether or not I was going to continue TRYING TO golf or not.
The first day was spent learning basic golf etiquette and safety, how to grip and putt (45 minutes) and how to grip and chip (45 minutes). We learned techniques for each, and ways to practice (little games), and I have to say I wasn’t too bad. I left feeling fairly positive, although I did let the instructors know they’d have their work cut out for them on swinging (I can’t swing to save my soul).
The second day started by me warning the instructors that it would be a miracle if they could successfully teach me to swing—the farthest I ever hit a ball was MAYBE 25 yards (and that was with a wood). They said they hadn’t had anyone they couldn’t teach yet. I said “We’ll see.” First we started with how to handle bad lies and then spent 1:30 on swinging. Man oh man is that HARD! There are SO many things to remember…keep your head down, keep your arm straight, keep your foot planted, swing like you mean it—just in case you actually hit the ball—all at once. But, I found, if you do those things…you’ll hit the ball! The golf pros/instructors were very nice…there were only 10 of us at the clinic and two pros, so you had pretty hands-on help and coaching. However, I wasn’t quiteup to par with everyone else—by the time they were done with their first bucket of balls, I had only managed to hit about four. But, as the instructor said, I WAS HITTING THEM…so he was right—he could teach anyone to swing! I joked that I should have been more specific—I had to be able to swing and consistently hit the ball! I discovered I either whiffed the ball or made a divot 75% of the time…the other 25% I made contact with the ball. So, I’m definitely better than before…but I definitely need practice. Good thing we now live on a golf course!
ARGH! Golf clinic.
So, if you recall, it had been tentatively rescheduled for August 2-3, but they said they would call ahead of time to make sure you still wanted to attend. So I waited. And waited. And waited. And no call came. So today is the day and I wondered about it, but didn’t call because I’m really busy at work. Tom just called to say it’s on—he called them to check and it’s today and tomorrow and this is the only clinic this year!! He said they called people yesterday (and of course our phone is disconnected)—BUT WHAT THE HELL GOOD IS CALLING THE DAY PRIOR?! That’s not a lot of notice. UGH.
So now I have to decide if I want to take an hour lunch to go home and get a change of clothes and my clubs…or if I just bag it and wait for a clinic next year? I really want to golf, but this timing is for the birds.
Golf Clinic Rescheduled
It’s too nasty again weather-wise today, so the clinic has been rescheduled for next month. Crap. This means I have another month to wait without playing—or another month to teach myself bad habits! But, on the plus side, it’s sooooo damn hot and muggy lately that I wouldn’t really want to be outside anyway.
Golf Clinic Postponed
Unfortunately, my golf clinic was postponed due to weather—it’s been storming all day. It’s rescheduled for the next two days…although I don’t have high hopes, since this weather is supposed to continue all week.
Golf lessons, please!
So I was REALLY looking forward to hitting some balls with my new clubs. After all, if I did (what I thought was) decent using right-handed clubs backwards, surely left-handed clubs would be the answer.
Ha.
Ha ha.
HA HA HA HA.
I still suck. With a capital S. I just can’t seem to get the full swing down—it feels totally and grossly unnatural. Of course, when Tom shows me how to swing and I try it…my boobs get in the way (hey, I’m being honest here) and I can only make about a half-swing. After I do manage a half-assed swing, I either A) miss the ball completely, B) make contact, but it goes horribly awry, or C) make contact and the ball goes skittering out between 30-75 yards. I don’t think I made one ball to 100 yards in the hour we were there.
I know I shouldn’t expect miracles my first time out, but I really thought I would do a little better since I had the correct clubs (and you wouldn’t think it was THAT hard to hit the damn ball). I tried not to get too frustrated, telling myself this is only my first time. That said, I probably won’t go out again until after my clinic at the end of the month—I hate to start teaching myself bad things (or get bad things ingrained) only to have to unlearn them after the clinic. I’m sure my stance is wrong, my swing is wrong, and my footing is wrong among other things, LOL!
Stay tuned…
Wheeee! Golf!
I did something yesterday I’ve never IN MY LIFE done before…I went golfing! My boss invited me and Tom to play in a local golf scramble with her and John…and we had a blast! I have always wanted to learn to play, but the one time Tom tried teaching me (way back in Lansing before we were married), there was so much arguing and yelling just trying to hit a bucket of balls that we decided it wasn’t in our best interest if we wanted to remain a couple. (He’s a righty and, although I’m right-handed, I’m a lefty when it comes to batting and putting, so it was quite difficult to try and teach me anything.)

So the main challenge of yesterday, aside from NEVER HAVING PLAYED BEFORE, was that I didn’t have any left-handed clubs—and the country club didn’t have any—so I was relegated to either playing right-handed (which was not comfortable at all and got quite a few laughs) or using my very own left-handed putter in lieu of a driver, a wood, an iron, or a pitching wedge! John had a nice driver that ended up working pretty well, even using it backwards. John is an avid golfer and Tom can hold his own as well, so we mostly used their shots! That said, regardless of me not having the correct clubs, I didn’t do TOO badly and got some nice, straight shots—and amazingly enough, we even used some of them for scoring!

Aside from having fun “playing” golf, one of the really fun things was driving the cart—I had a blast! Some of the course was a little hilly, so every time we went flying down the trail, I’d let out a little “Wheeeeee!” and we had a laugh. The only bad thing about the day was that it was quite hot and humid—if it wasn’t for the nice breeze, it would have been hell. So, when I was waiting for Tom to hit or whatnot, I’d drive around and around in the cart—it was the best way to get a nice breeze and cool down!
Anyway, throughout the day I kept thinking “I wonder how I could do with real clubs…??” and I really thought I would be interested in learning to play—or at least renting some left-handed clubs to see how it felt. So at the end of the day, we decided to look into finding me some clubs. We stopped at Sam’s to see if they had anything—nope. We didn’t feel like braving Walmart but hit Target and they had nothing for left-handers. We checked out eBay when we got home and seriously almost bought some—they had really great prices on new sets…but I told Tom we shouldn’t rush into anything. There’s a golf clinic coming up on base (that someone at the scramble told me about) so I figured I would do that…and if I still wanted to try golfing, then we’d look at getting some clubs. On the other hand, if the 4-hour clinic changed my mind, we wouldn’t be out $150 for clubs. Then I had an A-HA moment and thought “My dad is left-handed and I know we’ve talked about his clubs before. I wonder if he still has them and if he would ship them to me?” I called but there was no answer.
In the morning, we remembered a local golf shop—and were excited because they deal in new and used clubs. We asked about left-handed, and he said he didn’t have any women’s, but he had a men’s set—and since I was fairly tall, those would probably work fine. I got excited, but was leary because we had decided we didn’t want to spend money on clubs yet. Then he told us the price ($50) and the fact that as long as we kept the receipt, we could always return them and get credited for an upgraded set so I would basically be using the clubs for free (providing I liked it and wanted a better set)!! That was the clincher, so now I have my very own golf clubs and bag! He said we had perfect timing, as that set just came in yesterday—from someone who had done the same thing I did and was finally upgrading! I figure even if I end up not liking it or not playing very much, we only spent $50! (Well, $60—I got some colored golf balls!)
So we’re planning on going to the driving range either tonight or tomorrow and then I have the clinic at the end of the month. I’m really looking forward to this and I really hope I like it. I’ll be sure to keep everyone updated!
