Kids + Laser + Maggie = Fun!
Miss Priss
A sick boy and his dog
A good report, a birthday, and a messy girl.
Both kids got a good report from our friends…and they told us we were right—they were quite easy and Owen was really polite. Yep, that’s Owen. 🙂 Tim only had one moment right after we put the kids in the car and left—he said Owen started crying saying he wanted his mommy. Tim assured him we’d be back in a few hours and that he was going to see his friends—and then asked if he wanted to watch a movie and the tears dried up immediately! 🙂
We went back to their house (after our house stuff was finished) to hang out and celebrate Tim’s birthday. And the boys took their usual photo (there’s a long story behind it):
Whose birthday is it? THIS GUY!
Here’s their last photo from 2005:
OLD PHOTO WILL BE INSERTED HERE WHEN I FIND IT
They had other friends with kids over so there were like 13 kids total and Owen was in heaven. He enjoyed talking to the 8yo girl about Star Wars! I missed getting a picture of Katie IN the sand table but she had fun on the swing:
And it had rained and there was some wet mulch and mud…so she was A MESS! So much so that she got a quick bath before we left (and her clothes got sprayed with stain stuff)!
And it was another late night for them—we headed home at 8:30!
Visiting with old friends
Friends of ours live in Fairfax so we went to visit and have dinner with their family. (Tim was in the Marines with Tom back in the day.) They had also offered to watch the kids if we needed them to, so we were letting the kids get to know them. 🙂
Of course Owen immediately got along with them all (ages 7, 5, and 2) and had a blast on their playset. We had also brought Maggie and she was having fun playing with their lab!
The kids were way off their sleep schedule but both did well—they were both wide awake as we drove home at 8:30!
First sprinkler fun of the season!
After yesterday’s water fun, we told the kids they could play outside in the water again since it was going to be nice—they just had to wait until after Katie’s nap. This was actually Katie’s first ever time in a sprinkler—and of course she LOVED it!
All three kids waiting to go outside! (Later, the cats were both sitting at the door!)
I didn’t really want to get wet, so I ran inside to get my telephoto lens. Ahhhh, much better!
It was at this point that Owen accidentally broke the sprinkler—he was attempting to jump over it but instead landed right on it. He wasn’t hurt but we told him that he had to be careful. Then Tom went over and determined that yes, it really was broken, so he turned the water off so he could unhook it while he went to look for a new sprinkler. And Owen lost his shit. He started crying and screaming uncontrollably. We tried to get him to tell us what was wrong (Was he really hurt? Was he mad at Tom? Was he just upset the water was turned off?) but he wouldn’t even quiet down enough to hear anything we were saying. We assured him he wasn’t in trouble and that it was an accident but he just wouldn’t settle down. We had about 10 minutes of what you see below. Tom did find another sprinkler and hooked it up and Katie kept trying to get Owen to come over to it, but he was still being a poop. It took another 10 minutes or so before he was finally back in the groove.
Someone loved playing in the mud puddles created by the sprinkler! 🙂
Playing on our new bed!

Treats for Katie = Treats for Maggie
Awww. Maggie pillow.
Pathetic or comfortable?

No. Not spoiled. At all.
Nanny Alice, Day 1
Our friend Alice (actually a professional nanny—though usually for much older kids!) is staying with the kids while we go to Florida. The kids met her about two weeks ago when she came for two nights to meet them and Owen was excited to have her back.
This was the first picture we got on the road—some pre-nap cuddles!
Maggie and the kids enjoying the nice weather, the bubbles Alice brought, and playing swords!
She spoiled the kids with a fun dinner: Owen got a caterpillar hot dog and Katie got hot dog palm trees. Both got strawberry flowers:
And she braved giving Katie yogurt:
My honest first thought was What is she doing to me? Now the kids are going to expect fun dinners all the time?! But my immediate next thought was Oh what a super special surprise that only Miss Alice does! 🙂

Loving on Virginia
Someone was busy when I wasn’t looking.
It’s the little moments that excite you.
I just threw a load of clean towels on top of Maggie and Katie was concerned: “Maggie?!”
Then I pulled off a towel as I said “Where’s Maggie?” and Katie said her first real sentence: “I see Maggie!”
Maggie Kisses
Wait for it…
Beach time!
Welcome home, Tom!
He wasn’t scheduled to land at MCAS (Marine Corps Air Station) Cherry Point until 6:30, at which point they had to unload and do admin stuff and only THEN get bussed an hour to Camp Lejeune. The official ETA was 10:15, so I planned to leave at 9. But it’s the military, so surprise!
The easiest way for me to do this is follow a direct timeline according to my texts and Facebook posts. 🙂
6:28 Owen tells me he wants daddy to pick him up from school tomorrow and “Mama, you can stay in the car.” He’s going to have such a big surprise in the morning!
6:44 Tom texted: Landed
6:44 I texted back: Woohoo
6:45 I posted to Facebook: The eagle has landed. (It was Liked by 72 people.)
8:01 Tom texted: On the move. (He sent a Glympse so I could follow his progress.)
8:19 Tom texted: I should be ready by 2130.
8:20 I texted back: 9:30?!? I need to leave earlier.
8:24 I texted my next door neighbor (who was coming to stay with the kids) asking if she could come over a bit earlier.
8:40 I pulled out of the driveway.
9:03 & 9:13 Following his progress—if I had left about 10 minutes earlier, I would have likely been following the bus on base:
9:17 I posted this picture on Facebook: So close, yet not quite.
9:21 Tom texted: At armory now.
9:21 I texted back: I’m watching. 🙂 (I could still see him walking around on Glympse.)
9:26 I posted this picture on Facebook: Bags are unloaded from a separate truck first, ahead of the guys.
9:27 I posted this picture on Facebook: This is what the scene looks like.
9:37 Tom texted: We are half way done. 15 minutes. Getting back on bus. Four guys left.
9:40 I posted to Facebook: I was so excited to get out of the house that I forgot it was freezing. I have no hat, gloves, or scarf. I’m frozen.
9:43 Tom posted to Facebook: M4, M9, and NVGs turned into armory. On bus to see Jen and do the Sea Bag Drag.
9:45 I posted this picture on Facebook: Waiting while freezing my fingers off.
9:46 I posted this picture on Facebook: They’ve rearranged the bags three times now.
9:54 A friend took these pictures of our reunion. Not quite as romantic a picture as you’d probably imagined. 🙂
And of course our traditional selfie (we did them before they were a thing):
9:59 After Tom found his bags, we took this selfie with the iPhone so we could post it on Facebook: He’s home! Better pics later! (It was Liked by 127 people.)
10:04 A buddy of Tom’s helped haul all his gear to the car and then took this picture:
10:48 Maggie welcomes daddy home:
My furry cuddle buddy.
Playing Legos together
Amazingly, she never tries to put them in her mouth! She just takes them apart, hands pieces to Owen, and tries to put them together.
Maggie doesn’t quite know what to do with Katie in her bed.
Where I finally put Maggie so she’d relax. Except I think she knows it’s not quite right because she keeps rearranging herself. 🙂
