Apparently any sentence with “underwear” in it is a joke.

Owen was telling me lots of “jokes” at dinner—pretty much it was just any sentence he thought of with the word underwear in it. 🙂

“What about…the chocolate man was eating underwear?! Ha! You get it?”

“What about Spongebob and Squidward in their underwear?!”

There were about six more but of course I didn’t write them down as he was saying them…

Today might have been my roughest day ever with Owen.

He was a complete pain in the ass from the minute we pulled into the driveway (after coming home from the playground after school): yelling, screeching, stomping, throwing things, hitting things, hitting me and Katie, being completely defiant, being rude…

In all, he had four time outs, TV and video games taken away, early bedtime given (twice!), and eventually a few precious toys taken away which resulted in him screaming and crying. (I even had to interrupt writing the draft of this post to jump up and yell at him for smacking Katie in the face because he was pissed at her. That got him sent to his room.) And I was even ignoring a lot of his more minor events. He even had his B (which I thought would be comforting) but he was even throwing that around and saying he didn’t want it. I asked if he wanted to go up to his room to be alone and he grouched at me about that, too (before he got sent there).

It was exhausting.

When I take something away for, say, him being cranky, he seems to think that if he apologizes right away and says he won’t be cranky anymore…that he’ll get whatever I just took away (like TV). Nope, kid, that’s not how it works. You get a warning (sometimes two) and if you keep on, you get the punishment—and at that point it’s too late to recover from the punishment. And I’ve told him this REPEATEDLY and I NEVER give in so it’s not like he’s thinking I did it once so I’ll do it again. And he apparently hasn’t fully caught on that when I say NO TV, I mean NO TV. Sometimes it’s just one show he loses. But today was full on TV. But he kept asking every half hour or so—and when I kept telling him no, that would set him off again (even though I kept asking him if he remembered WHY he lost TV and he did—he would tell me because he was cranky, etc.). So then he throws a toy or throws a B or hits Katie (which are all obviously not allowed) and it just escalates. He’s actually pretty good about sitting in his time out—and we go through the whole Super Nanny thing of me telling him I love him, me asking him what he did wrong (he always knows), him apologizing—and 10 minutes later he’d be back in another time out after being warned.

Lather, rinse, repeat…for a good three hours.

I actually thought he recovered after a pizza dinner and a bath (two of his favorite things, during which he was his normal, happy self!) but then he got cranked up again while getting ready for bed (he was upset that he missed a few chore chart items—he definitely lost Show Respect today, as well as Pick Up Toys and Share) and therefore lost his snack so he was NOT happy.

WHAT. THE. HELL?!

As I was saying good night, I told him tomorrow was a new day and it would be a better day…and he said “Yes! No more throwing things, hitting mama or Katie, and being grouchy.” So we’ll see…

Owen dropped a Lego while going upstairs: Uh oh! Lego alert!

While watching Monsters University:
Mommy, I have those Shrinky Dinkies!

Owen: Mama, is this another mama, Katie, and Owen day?
Me: Yes.
Owen: And not a Gramma Jean and Grauntie Marge day?
Me: Right.

Owen: Mama? Santa’s at the North Pole right now? It’s way way far away?
Me: Yes.

After getting some sad news, I SOOOO needed this today. Little boy cuddles have healing properties.

20140102-123937.jpg
Me: I love my little boy.
Owen: I love my big mom.

Owen: When Santa comes to visit…
Me: Well, Santa doesn’t really visit. He comes while you’re sleeping and—
Owen: I KNOW. I’m using my imagination.

Owen: Mama, look! They’re protecting you!

Morning light saber fight!

I didn’t let Owen take a light saber up to his room at bedtime since I try not to let him have noisy toys that might wake me up in the morning…but he came in first thing and asked if he could go get it and I said yes. He said “Great! And I’ll be quiet and won’t wake up Grauntie Marge!” 🙂

After my shower, I walked in to see this.

Santa was here!

These are all taken within about a half hour. Yes, it was chaos. And normally I wouldn’t post this many pictures, but it’s Christmas! Enjoy!

The first round of presents…

EDITED TO ADD A FEW OF GRAMMA JEAN’S PICTURES! BE SURE TO LOOK THROUGH THE POST AGAIN!

Since there were SOOOO many presents under the tree before Santa even got here, we decided to let the kids open some. Owen was SUPER excited and Katie quickly got into the spirit—she is actually really quite good at opening presents!

Let’s just say once the first present was opened, it was pretty much chaos. I had planned to take videos for Tom…but once things got started, it was all I could do to keep snapping pics. I feel bad because I missed a really great opening by Owen (details later) but between two kids opening presents at the same time, each of them wanting to play with each other’s things (and not their own), mini tantrums from both when they didn’t get their way, Owen just wanting to blow through all his presents without actually taking even five seconds to look at what he just opened…I was glad I got some pictures.

Katie loves opening clothes…because of course she wants to put them on right away. It might be pants on her arms or a PJ top on her legs, but she doesn’t care.

Gramma Jean bought the kids a sandwich-making kit and both had a blast with it. Owen made GJ a lovely peanut butter and ketchup sandwich! I think they played with it for 10-15 minutes before wanting to open more presents!

2013-12-23kids227

Then Owen opened the cash register from Grannie and Papa…and he was EXCITED!

2013-12-23kidsXMAS12

And of course Katie recognized what it was and was immediately interested, too!

2013-12-23kidsXMAS13

He was SO damn cute. As he was opening it, he says “OH…MY…HEAVENS! This is my most favorite thing ever!” or something very close to that. (Of course I was sure I would remember it, but of course I didn’t.) He just went on and on about how great it was while I was opening it and taking everything out. And the doll! It talks! (I hadn’t realized that.) So that was exciting. And Katie wanted everything and Owen didn’t want her to touch any of it. (He eventually relented.)

Owen playing with Katie’s school bus. Funny story. I actually got it for Owen A LONG time ago and put it in his closet and forgot about it. Then he didn’t really need it so I thought I’d save it for Katie but left it in his closet. Fast forward to about four days ago when I happened to have his closet open and he said “Mom! I want that school bus!” So on the spot I decided it would be for Katie, and explained how we give gifts to people we love and that we know they’d like, so why don’t we give this to Katie? He accepted that, so then we wrapped it together—our first wrapping attempt. It didn’t go too badly, though I apparently didn’t stress enough that we keep gifts SECRET because he told Katie it was a school bus when she saw it under the tree. 🙂

Both kids went to bed about 30-45 minutes later than normal, and both were TIRED even though neither claimed to be. But it was super fun and I’m glad we did it. The kids loved most everything and I did a pretty good job shopping for the grandparents! There are still more pre-Santa presents to open, but that will come tomorrow…

Owen: I don’t like that smoke.
Me: It’s exhaust.
Owen: I don’t like it—it tastes like bad.

Owen: Mom I feel blue.
Me: Blue? (Making sure I heard him right.)
Owen: Yes, blue. It means sad.
Me: Yes, it does. Where did you learn that?
Owen: Learning school.

Trying to decide what to take for Show & Tell this week that starts with C or is holiday-related.
Me: How about a coyote?
Owen: What’s that?
Me: It’s like a wolf.
Owen: We don’t have that.
Me: How about chocolate? Or cheese balls?
Owen: Noooo! You don’t take food.
Me: How about crayons?
Owen: No—we have those at school.
Me: How about your [Fisher-Price] Christmas tree?
Owen: YES!

(It’s part of a Fisher-Price Christmas Village Owen got from Aunt Marie and Uncle Doug two Christmases ago. Both kids LOVE it!)

Owen put his ninja costume on.
Owen: Mama, if there’s a bad ninja in the house I will take care of him!

Owen: NO! I’m a good ninja!

Play date!

Owen and I went to the movies this morning (Frozen!) with friends of ours that are moving next week—Ruth (the one who helped me put up the lights and tree) and her daughter! We’re really going to miss them… Owen did pretty well at the movie—it was a sensory-friendly version which I don’t think he really needs anymore, but it’s at least $3pp less so we do go once in awhile. I think with the lights up and the sound down, he is actually more fidgety and doesn’t get as involved. I know I don’t get as involved because I hear the constant murmuring of all the other kids that aren’t paying attention and talking and running about…

But anyway, after the movie, they came over for sushi lunch (well, the kids had pizza bagels!) and then we went outside. Ruth just happened to have a pink baby swing in her car that she was getting rid of, so we hung it up! (I actually had one I hadn’t put up yet, so I just traded her for the pink one!) Katie liked it. Not loved it, but liked it. For a few minutes. 🙂

Me: Katie, you need to put that ornament back on the tree.
Owen: Yeah! Or Santa won’t be happy!

On the way to school:
Owen: Mama look! We’re holding hands!
Me: Awww! That’s so sweet!
Owen: Yeah, I love Katie.
A minute or so later:
Owen: I’m done holding her hand. My arm is tired.

20131211-101802.jpg

On the way home from school, we were trying to think of G things Owen could take for Show & Tell this week.
Me: You could take garbage.
Owen: Nooo! That’s stinky.
Me: You could take our garage.
Owen: Moooom! That’s too heavy.
Me: You could take Gramma.
Owen: Which one?
Me: Gramma Jean.
Owen: No, she’s not here. [As if the other ones might have been?!]

Owenisms 31

Owen: Mama! Watch me! He runs around the living room moving his feet really fast.
Me: Wow, that’s fancy!
Owen: Yes! Do you know where I learned it?
Me: No.
Owen: Galloping school!
Me: Galloping school?
Owen: Yes, next door to my school!

Owen just came up to me and said “You don’t smell like the queen.” I had to think a minute. Oh! Yes. He was quoting A Bug’s Life. 🙂 Then he says “You smell like a mom.”

Our neighbors put up their Christmas lights. Owen noticed them at night when they were all lit up.
Owen: Mama, look!
Me: I know—aren’t their lights pretty?
Owen: Yes! Mama, when are you going to put our lights up?

I hung the stockings while Owen was at school today so told him there was a surprise for him at home.
Owen: What is it?
Me: Go look around.
Owen: THE STOCKINGS!!
Me: Is that a good surprise?
Owen: Yes. Where are the two reindeer?
Man he has a good memory. I usually put out two silver reindeer…and he knew they were missing!
Me: They’re still in the garage.
Owen: Mama, you have to put them out.

Surprise mystery trip!

I had dropped Maggie off at the groomers so we had about 45 minutes to waste after picking Owen up so I had planned to take them to the playground.

Me: Owen, we’re going on a surprise mystery trip!
Owen: TO THE BEACH?!
Me: No.
Owen: To the mall?
Me: No. Just wait. We’ll be there in a minute.
In line at the light to turn, he knows where we are!
Owen: THE PLAYGROUND!

He’s now tall enough to reach the bar without jumping! It was just this summer when he couldn’t reach!

20131203-204432.jpg

It’s been a tough five days.

Sick and cranky kids, Owen’s poop issues (a clean out), obviously Tom being gone on a holiday, me now starting to feel sick—all on top of the normal everyday stuff—and after some random unimportant thing (like Katie reaching for the Kleenex box for the 23rd time) I kinda lost it. I really try not to do it in front of the kids, but it just happened.

Poor Owen was like “Mama, are you okay?”

I told him I was—I just really missed daddy and it was really hard work taking care of everything by myself while he was gone.

He came over and hugged me and gave me a kiss saying “It’s okay mom.” Then told me he was going to read me a happy story.

Owenisms 30

As he’s getting into the car after school.
Owen: Hi Katie! How was your day? I missed you!

On the way home, Owen asked me how many minutes until we got home. I said two. As I slowed down to turn in the driveway:
Owen: Is this our house?
Me: Ohmygosh?! I stop the car in the street before pulling in the driveway. Is this our house?
Owen: Blue windows and blue door. Yep, 108. Our house.

Owen wanted to play with my Doctor Who sonic screwdriver so I begrudgingly let him—specifically telling him to BE CAREFUL and not lose any of the parts. Less than three minutes later…
Owen: Mama, I lost the end.
Me: I JUST HANDED IT TO YOU. HOW COULD YOU LOSE IT?
Owen: I don’t know.

Owen: Mama? Want to hear a joke?
Me: Sure.
Owen: Apple juice corn!

Owen: What’s that brown thing?
Me: The avocado pit.
Owen: Why?
Me: Because that’s how it grows.
Owen: Why?

He’s taken to asking what every song on the radio is.
Owen: Mama, what’s this song?
Me: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Owen: Why?

Owen: Mama, what’s this song?
Me: Winter Wonderland
Owen: Why?
Me: Because that’s what it’s called.
Owen: Why?

Owen came in while I was showering. This happens about twice a week. Long story short, he ended up taking a shower with me this time.
Owen: Bending over and looking at my pubic area. Where’s your penis?
Me: I don’t have a penis.
Owen: You don’t?
Me: Thinking “Oh crap, what have I started?” Boys have penises. Girls don’t.
Owen: No. Where is it?
Me: I told you, only boys have penises.
And then I changed the subject and he was off on how tickly the bubbles were. So, a conversation for another day…
