I discovered a new trail!

So, long story short, I’ve been thinking about starting a gym membership just so I can go walking. You might be asking why I can’t just go around our neighborhood. Well, I could, but 85% of my day is with the kids and I can’t really WALK with them (I could meander—which is better than nothing—but not what I’d prefer). So a friend of mine kept urging me to go, with the incentive that they offer childcare (for an additional monthly fee, of course, but still a great option).

So today was the day I had decided I was going to go down and check it out. So I got dressed for walking, got my shoes and socks on, and then…just sat there. I didn’t want to go. I am just NOT a gym person—never have been, doubt I ever will be—and the thought of paying someone upwards of $65/mo just to WALK just annoys me. So I told Katie we were going to go to the playground. That would at least be a bit of a walk, and we’d go up and down the side streets to add some more steps. (Oh, yeah, I got a FitBit a few days ago to count my steps. I have a daily goal of about 5,000 steps which is just over two miles.)

So we went down the first side street and I happened to look up and—what? what did I see?—I saw something that looked like a map next to what looked like a trail entrance. So up we went. Well, the sign was completely washed out, but you could tell there were trails back there:

So off we went, into the woods. It was peaceful and quiet and cool (though the day was actually a bit cooler than it had been, so it was perfect for walking).

2015-06-18 09.47.41

That trail was quite short, but it merged into a bigger trail. I picked a direction—turning on my phone’s GPS so I could track how far and where we were walking—and off we went. Much to my surprise, this was the view:

2015-06-18 09.53.59

Who knew all that nature was behind us?! I looked on Google maps to see if they had any info—and it did show the trail!

2015-06-18 10.00.06

We started at the end of the unnamed road and where the blue dot is was about 1/4 mile from where the trails merged (and you can see where our house is in the bottom right corner). I determined that was far enough for the first trip (considering it was trail walking—a bit rocky and uneven—and Katie didn’t have on the best shoes). But she was a champ! She LOVED it! I told her she was doing SUCH a great job and she’d say “Thank you, mama!” She loved walking through the “tunnels” (where the trees came together over the trail) and spent most of her time babbling about anything and everything, though a favorite refrain was “I love mama and daddy and Owen.” I asked if she loved anyone else and she repeated mama and daddy and Owen. I asked if she loved Gramma Jean and she said “Yes! I love Gramma Jean and Grandpa David. I love Papa and Grannie. I love Grandma Marsh and Uncle Rob!” Sooooo cute.

Another view of the trail.

So after that neat experience, I determined that I wasn’t going to get a gym membership because I could take the kids on that walk a few times a week. And I said we’d try to walk the whole thing when daddy was with us. (I need to see if I can find out just how far it is, otherwise I’ll send Tom out on a reconnaissance run first!)

We were at the playground.
Katie: Hey birdie!
Bird flies away.
Katie: Hey! I was just going to talk to you!

I was trying to explain the concept of half to Owen using money (he came home with basic fraction work yesterday). One quarter (25c) is 1/4 of a dollar. He understood. Then this happened.
Me: What is half of 100?
Owen: /thinking/ One million?
Me: No. Don’t guess. Think about it.
Owen: One second?
Me: /This is why I can’t ever homeschool./

Me: Where did you find those toys?
Owen: Downstairs.
Me: Where downstairs?
Owen: In the school opening thing.
Me: The school opening thing? What?
Owen: You know. The school thing that you open and put stuff in.
Me: WHAT?!
Owen: THE SCHOOL OPENING THING!
I think hard about what all is downstairs…and it hits me.
Me: Owen, that’s a desk.

Katie: Can I have a snack?
Me: No.
Katie: Why can’t I have a snack?
Me: You just ate breakfast!
Katie: Why won’t you give me a snack?!
Me: I just told you.
Katie: That makes me sad.

Katie: Can we go in the car?
Me: No, we don’t need to go anywhere.
Katie: That makes me sad.

Katie: ANY QUESTION
Me: ANY ANSWER
Katie: That makes me sad.

Katie: Can I have a snack?
Me: No.
Katie: Can you get up?
Me: Yes.
Katie: So can you get me a snack?

Tom, putting Katie to bed: Katie, is there poop in there?
Katie: Maaaaybe.

We were reading a new book. (Well, Owen was reading it to me and it’s interactive.) The last page says “Back to the beginning. This way…”
Me: Do you want to read it again? Just flip it back like this.
Owen: I know how a book works!

Owen: Mom, I’m tired. I didn’t get enough sleep last night.
Me: Okay, then you can go to bed earlier tonight.
Owen: What? Why?
Me: Because you can either sleep in later or go to bed earlier. And since you don’t sleep in, you can go to bed earlier.
Owen: Mom, I made a mistake. I’m not tired.

Owen: {something something}
Me: What’s hic?
Owen: Lemonade.
Me: What is hic lemonade?
Owen: Hic. Lemonade.
Me, {lightbulb}: That’s Hi-C.

Katie: Daddy. I had so much fun with my girls yesterday!

Tom moved the recliner into the living room.
Katie, upon seeing it: Just for me????

Kidisms 10

It was raining on our way home in the car.
Owen: Everyone has windshield wipers on…except the ones that don’t have windshield wipers.

Katie: I don’t want to be a mermaid.
Me: You don’t?
Katie: No. I just want to be Katie.

As Maggie was at the door for the 40th time today wanting to go outside…
Me: Maggie, you are driving me nuts.
Katie, letting Maggie out: Maggie, you are driving mama nuts.

Mama! Look at me on my tippy toes!

Mamaaaa! I’m wearing your shoes…!

As Owen and I were walking home from the bus stop:
Owen: Mom, I dont want to live here anymore.
Me: Why not?
Owen: This hill makes me tired!

During dnner:
Tom: Owen, what did you do today?Owen: I don’t remember.
Katie, to me: What did you do today?
Me: What did you do?
Katie, matter-of-factly: The iPad. Daniel Tiger.

Kidisms 9

We were getting ready to take Owen to the bus stop:
Me: Are you ready to go?
Katie: No, I have to call daddy first.

Owen: I’m done playing with chalk. I’m going to play regular.

Me: Katie, let me check your diaper.
Katie: It has zero pee.

Me: Katie, you can’t grow up. You have to stay little forever.
Katie: No I have to grow up.

I put on my sun visor to go to the playground.
Katie: That’s Gramma’s hat!

An hour with Katie

She also learned how to flick flowers and had a GRAND time doing it.

Then it was off to the playground.

“Mom, the panda is hot!”

She found the only puddle in the middle of the wood chips…in white pants. 🙂

Hanging like a monkey…again.

Her rock collection.

Kidisms 8

Tom: Katie, you look like a buttercup.
Katie: No, I’m adorable.

Owen: Mom, the green sign is wrong. It needs an and. Play fair, take turns, and share.

Me: Owen, look what we found!
Owen: A ninja turtle!
Katie: No, I’m a Katie bug! A ninja turtle Katie bug!

Me: I love it when the house is all picked up.
Owen: Me, too! I wish it could stay like this every day.
Me: Okay, it’s time to pick up toys.
Owen: WHY?!?!

We were shopping at Costco and Katie saw Oreos.
Katie: OREOS!
Me: Do we need those?
Katie: No, Papa does!

We were at the pet store looking at fish.
Owen: These are cool.
Me: We can’t get those. They’re not saltwater.
Owen: No, they’re clean water!

Me: I love it when the house is all picked up.
Owen: Me, too! I wish it could stay like this every day.
Me: Okay, it’s time to pick up toys.
Owen: WHY?!?!

Katie: Where’s daddy?
Me: He went to get a haircut.
Katie: Why? He doesn’t have hair.

Puddle Jumper!

I promised Katie she could jump in the puddles when we came out of the store. She was having sooooo much fun I just let her keep jumping and jumping and jumping. My quick run to the dollar store morphed into over an hour once the jumping was done (she was jumping for almost half an hour!)!

I couldn’t decide on the best in-flight pics—it’s amazing how high she actually jumps (which you can’t tell just watching in real time)—so I included all of them. 🙂

Happy Easter!

We told Owen he had to wait for us to come get him in the morning, otherwise he likely would have found all the eggs before Katie even got out of bed! (We also said it in case we didn’t get around to hiding the eggs before bed and Tom had to do it in the morning.)

Every time Katie opened an M&M, it went straight into her mouth. 🙂

Some fancy twirling in her new tutu. And we have NO idea where Owen got the “I’m going to text my friends” bit. NO IDEA.

Katie has started taking after Owen with the crazy faces when I’m trying to take a picture.

Since it’s Easter, I thought I’d pull out a pretty hand-me-down dress from the Beson girls—and of course Katie LOVES it! She kept saying “It’s so BEAUTIFUL! Look at my beautiful dress!” 🙂

And the best two:

And since she was dressed up, and we were actually all getting dressed to go out on errands, we took a family picture!

T-ball practice!

It was sunny but windy and chilly.

Katie: Mama, look at that pillow on the floor.
Me: ???
Another T-ball mom: The base.
Me: Ahhhhh.

Enjoying some cuddle time.

They learned the different positions, practiced some fielding, and each had a practice at-bat:

Tom was helping on the field and said it was like herding cats. Yep, that was exactly what I had been thinking. 🙂

They have had five scheduled practices. Owen missed one due to our vacation and two have been canceled due to weather…so he will be playing his first game only having had two practices. It’s going to be a HOT MESS. 🙂

Kidisms 7

Katie had the iPad on the road trip home.
Katie: Mom, there’s no triangle button.
Me: What?
Katie: There’s no triangle!
Yep, she was watching a movie and it was paused and the play (triangle) button had disappeared!

Katie: I want to give you a hug.
Owen: Fine. Here’s your hug. Now go.

Katie: My beautiful dress has sparkles and glittery on it!

I’m apparently raising a rebel.
Owen sees the sign, reads it, then says: Ha! I’m standing in the fire lane!

Katie at the playground:

Owen was pretending he had to go to work but then I heard:
Oh! My general isn’t here today so I have the day off.
Tom loved that one!

Owen’s first T-ball practice

He actually missed the first practice since we were on vacation, but this was HIS first practice. He was VERY excited.

Running the bases before practice!

2015-03-24kids020

The ages of the team are 5/6 but Owen is honestly a full foot taller than most of them! Most of the kids are about the size of Katie!! (I think there’s another age 5/6 team but it’s for kids that have previous experience.)

2015-03-24kids021

Katie was a great cheerleader! “Owen, good job practicing. Keep practicing with daddy! Good practicing!”

Katie does whatever her big brother does—she was throwing pine cones at the fence just like Owen was throwing balls at the fence!
