Someone did NOT want to take a nap today…and decided instead to trash her room. First time ever. I think her new bed threw her off.

Is it time for my nap yet?
If Katie doesn’t start sleeping past 6-6:15 I might lose my mind.
Yes I’m thankful she sleeps soundly through the night, but 6am kills me. (It can be anywhere from 5:45-6:30 but mostly it’s 6:05-6:10.)
She has learned how to open her door so we’ve turned her knob around so we can lock her in, but that causes loud crying when she can’t get out. But if we don’t do that she gets up and wanders the house and I have to get up anyway to keep her out of mischief. Owen sleeps consistently to about 6:30 so I have to get her quickly to shut her up so she doesn’t wake him (their rooms are next to each other). Then she always says some variation of “Want to get Owee” or “I want to play Owee.”
And of course Owen won’t have to be at the bus stop until 8:30 so it’s not like we’ll need to be up earlier once school starts.
We’ve tried exhausting her (skipping her nap, running her ragged) and it didn’t have an effect. We tried putting her to bed early—no change. The only thing left is putting her to bed later…which I hate but we might have to just try. (She slept in regularly on vacation at my mom’s, and the only differences there were a bit darker room and sometimes staying up later.)
Owen definitely spoiled us…he’d just play in his room quietly until we came and got him. He’d stay there for hours if we let him. But her? NEEDS ATTENTION.
Is it time for my nap yet?
Owen’s first overnight friend…almost.
Katie’s new bedding!
Sleeping hard
Sleeping Beauty
It was a rough night… It started just fine with Katie and Owen on an air mattress together and both going to bed with no issues. This is when we went to bed at 10:30.
Then Katie starting whining/whimpering/crying about 1:30 and was keeping me and Owen up so I traded places with Owen to hopefully keep her quiet. Yeaaaah…it didn’t work as great as I’d hoped. She was wide awake staring at me or still whining or asking for her baby or something else. I think she (I) finally fell asleep about 2:30…and then this was her when it was time to get up.
And Owen was OUT, too.
Pretend sleeping with daddy
A much-needed epic nap.
It was a loooong night and early morning.
I slept like crap on the air bed (and had to fill the air about 11:30, hoping I didn’t wake the kids up since it sounded SO loud in an empty, quiet house), the street noise was annoying, there was a loud drip somewhere that I couldn’t figure out, and it was storming.
I know I looked at the clock at 12:30, 2:30, 4:15, and then I was up for good at 5:30. Owen was up at 5:45 and Katie was up at 6.
GOOD MORNING!
And them the big question: to take a cold shower or no shower (no hot water since gas isn’t on yet). I thought I was going to shower but then chickened out and opted for a baby wipes cleansing.
And then it was bedtime.
I put the kids in a queen bed together. Katie doesn’t do a pack-and-play anymore and has slept with Owen before but it was at a hotel with us right there all going to bed at once. I kept my fingers crossed.
Ha. Haha. 😐
They went to bed late as it was…and as of 8:30 (her normal bedtime is 7!) Katie had been up out of bed five times, at which point I posted myself right in the doorway. I really didn’t plan to do the SuperNanny shit tonight—I was exhausted and just wanted to relax—but there I was. On the sixth time I was seriously about ready to lose it, even though I know it’s normal for the situation. And then she wouldn’t stop playing with the outlet and the bed plugged in…so I decided to put her in her own bedroom (we had a kid air bed) because by this point she was keeping Owen up.
Once there I sat in her doorway and had to tell her to lay down and go to sleep about three times. I waited about 10 minutes and she was calming down so I shut the door and left.
Phew.
Lorton, here we come!
Well, me and the kids anyway. And Maggie. Right on schedule at 10:00. With the Prius packed to the hilt with a crap ton of stuff for two nights (pillows, air beds, sheets, towels, stuffed animals, blankets, sound machines, night lights, food, snacks, drinks, kids’ med kit, toys, books, iPad, laptop…and Maggie and all her stuff)! Katie is back there, too, but I was lazy and didn’t take my phone out of the dash holder to take the picture.
The kids were really good—Katie watched Despicable Me 2 on a continuous loop and was perfectly content…and Owen alternated between playing on his phone and just watching the road. He did enjoy watching my mapping app (Waze) and kept notifying me of “yellow triangles” (road hazards like stopped cars) and police. When this came up he was like “WOW!! Look at all that stuff popping up!”
Katie had fallen asleep about 1:00 and Owen was adamant he didn’t need a rest. This was taken at about 1:15. 🙂
There were a few slowdowns around Stafford (when aren’t there?) but we made it in good time, even with the traffic snafus.
Welcome home! Amazon packages were waiting!
And the kids had A BLAST running around the house.
And they saw COOKIE MONSTER in the garage…so it had to come in immediately. 🙂
It was hotter than hell (and humid) so unpacking the car wasn’t fun. Katie also kept opening the garage door and coming outside—leaving the door wide open with Maggie right there. We’re going to have to put some kind of lock on the outside of the door, I think. Probably on the inside, too. (I’m not sure why these doors are so much easier to open than ours were—she could only open our lever-handle door, not the knobs.) She’s going to be a 180 from Owen on just about everything, escaping included.
Dinner was an escapade. I’d been planning on PB&J…except I apparently forgot the peanut butter and the bread I brought was moldy. Panic! We were all STARVING since we hadn’t eaten since breakfast and it was almost 4! I ended up pulling pizza bagel bites from freezer (that we brought up two weeks ago). There’s lots of pantry stuff but it’s all packed away in the hot garage and not immediately accessible. There’s always take-out but that will be tomorrow!
They were happy, though!

Joining Owen in bed
I love that she sleeps with her bear.
Sleep cuddling with her bear
Katie loves being in a bed!
This is our bed when we got back to the hotel! She cuddles up tight next to Owen and says “Sleepy!”
Then this is Owen trying to go to sleep…with Katie still going a mile a minute rightnexttohim.
Either she was extra tired tonight or she was finally getting used to the bed…but she was out pretty quickly (yay!). She still did cry out a few times during the night but it wasn’t bad. In the morning we looked over to see Owen practically hanging off the bed with Katie snuggled right up next to him. He said she touched him all night long. 🙂
Katie lasted all night!
So we put her in bed with Owen again…and she chattered away for quite some time.
Good night Owen.
Good night mama.
Good night daddy.
Good night Maggie.
/babble babble/
Good night Maggie.
/I coughed./
Are you okay mama?
Tom and I took turns telling her it was night night time and she needed to be quiet… It was probably about 10 when it was finally blissfully silent. And other than a few small short cries throughout the night, she did fine! They actually both slept in until about 6:40!
Katie didn’t last…
So…Katie just wouldn’t quiet down and leave Owen alone in the bed, so I moved her to her pack-and-play about 9:30 where she still kept chattering until about 9:45. Everything went well until she started crying at 12:15 and would not stop. So I got her out and held her, she settled down, and I put her back…just to have her start crying again. So I put her in bed with us and she quieted right down. Hoo boy. (Owen hasn’t even slept with us!)
She slept pretty good, but she sleeps rightnexttoyou and I had feet and knees in my back all night. I did get some sleep but it definitely wasn’t the best.
What have we done?!
We’re attempting to let Katie sleep with Owen on the fold out couch tonight. Heaven help us. (We figure why not make this hellish day complete?) She’s never slept in a bed before so of course we decide to try it for the first time in a strange hotel on a night when she’s had no nap and their sleep schedule is way off—bedtime is normally 7 and it’s after 9! She’s calmed a bit but is still playing and chattering…having a ball!
