Owen’s butterfly

Owen was so excited to show me his project from art class—I had to stop him from trying to unroll it as we walked home!

Do all moms love their kids’ artwork as much as I do? Or maybe I’m just super excited drew something not video game related. 🙂

Facebook friends saw something else.

I see a ninja turtle.

If that’s not a ninja turtle fighting a giant spider, I’ll be really disappointed.

So I told Owen people thought it was a ninja turtle—thinking he’d be thrilled because he likes ninja turtles—and he said incredulously “It’s a butterfly!” 🙂

Chasing a full rainbow!

As we were leaving the restaurant, I saw a rainbow.

Owen was excited to go find the leprechaun and pot of gold! We told him it was very hard to do—daddy and I had never in our whole lives been able to catch one! So of course as we were driving home the rainbow kept moving. 🙂 And then suddenly I noticed that it had moved somewhere I completely didn’t expect it… And it turns out it was the other end of the rainbow! So we could see the entire arc! It wasn’t super bright, but there was actually even a double rainbow on part of it!

We kept “following” it all the way home, and it one point it really looked like the end was on the highway and we were driving through it. And when we got home—surprise! We could still see the whole thing from our driveway!

Two new bikes!

We got Katie a real bike with training wheels tonight. She did better on that in the aisle then she ever did on either tricycle! (So now I have two tricycles to sell.) I do feel a smidge of guilt for not getting either the Frozen or Doc McStuffins bikes, but those had a premium price ($20 extra).

She also got a purple ladybug helmet. She wanted the pink cat princess with the crown but it was for ages 5+ and was just too big. 🙂

We also got Owen a 20″ bike (up from a 16″) but we need to buy training wheels. He fit on the 18″ bike but the seat was already all the way up! So we’re hoping to future-proof a little bit!

Since we preferred to save $25 per bike, Daddy gets to put them together this weekend!+

Riding bikes. Or, rather, attempting to.

Both kids wanted to go ride bikes. I knew it would be a challenge because Owen has not ridden his bike since last spring before we moved—and at that point he was still just learning and wasn’t that great at it—and because Katie has never successfully ridden either of the tricycles we have for her.

And that was it for Katie. Grand total of time spent on the bike, 95% of it whining that she couldn’t do it while being pushed by daddy? Five minutes. However, she did love running! She spent the rest of the time chasing after Owen or running ahead of him or just randomly through the parking lot. 🙂

Taking a break to stretch…and take a drink.

Owen was a hot mess for most of the time. He’s grown so much that he is really way too big for the bike we have and we obviously didn’t have another one for him so he had to use that one. And it’s been so long since he’s ridden that it was, in essence, starting over from day one. I’m glad Tom was there to deal with it because I DO NOT have the patience. That said, by the end of our time, he had started to get the hang of it again.

So now I’m on the hunt for a cheap used bigger bike.

After bikes, the kids wanted to go to the “playground” even though I knew they hated this playground as it’s not a real playground. It lasted under five minutes.

Game 5: Raptors vs. Rock Hounds

Owen was excited to use his new bat. He had a bat that Papa had bought him, but he’s grown a lot since then and it was too small—and all the other team bats were really too small as well. Daddy said this bat should last him through actual baseball (if he stays in that long).

Visiting Owen at school

For some unknown reason, Owen really wanted me to come to his Friday morning program. So we did. This is some of what happened: getting the sillies out and then dancing along to a video. Owen’s dancing is hilarious.

He says he saw me when he walked in, but I didn’t even get a wave until the very end when they were filing out.

Afterwards we went home, but I had to be back in a few hours for a luncheon the teachers were throwing for the classroom volunteers…and I was going to time it so that we’d be able to go see Owen at lunch!

Katie looking at her pretty headband.

The luncheon was nice. I knew a few people there so we were able to chat for a bit. Katie knows the library well so she kept herself busy playing.

Then it was off to see Owen. Katie loves visiting him. 🙂

Then I heard him say something about he had to do his job at 55. I had no idea what he was talking about…but he kept watching the clock and at 1:55, he started his job: Floor Sweeper! (The other jobs are table washer, line leader, door holder, etc.)

Then it was time to head home…and deal with Katie’s typical tantrum because she desperately wants to play on the playground but I won’t let her whole school is in session (and kids are outside)…

Owen’s report card!

We got Owen’s second period report card today. He did very well, maintaining the majority of scores while actually increasing his score in 25% of the categories! (He only lost a point in one category, which we’re not really concerned with: Demonstrates appropriate skills playing instruments.) So, he has all 4s with a few 3s.

Achievement Levels:
4 – Consistently demonstrates concepts and skills
3 – Usually demonstrates concepts and skills
2 – Sometimes demonstrates concept sand skills
1- Seldom demonstrates concepts and skills

This was his reaction when we told him he did a good job—followed by throwing his fists in the air!

They love a water table!

We tossed their old water table when we moved since it was old and gross. We managed to get by last summer without one, but I know the kids missed it. So I got another (actually identical) one. And both of them LOVE it.

Katie got to play first as Owen was still at school.

But as soon as Owen got home, they were right back out there.

Owen went to the zoo!

A bunch of classes from Owen’s school went to The National Zoo today. I really wanted to experience it with him (and—who am I kidding?—be there to document it) but I would have had to take Katie and then it wouldn’t have been quite as fun since I’d be corralling her the majority of the time.

When he got home I asked about it, and this was what I got.

Grilled cheese helper

So when I told Owen what I was making for dinner (grilled cheese) he was adamant he wanted to help. I was really NOT in the mood but I let him anyway because the last thing I want to do is discourage anything kitchen- and food-related.

Of course, within the first 15 seconds or so, he dropped the fully-buttered knife down the cabinet front so I was cleaning that and the floor. But he did okay overall. I did learn that he needs to be making his own sandwiches for practice. 🙂

Game 5: Raptors vs. Hot Rods

Katie helping Owen get ready!

Owen being silly.

We got there early enough for some practice time.

Standing on a pillow.

He took a little hit in the face after a bad hop.

Now that’s a throw!

He was also the catcher again for an inning.

Unfortunately, we had a minor accident. Katie and Owen were both in the dugout when I called to Katie. Both her and Owen turned to come to me at the same time—I have no idea why Owen did, but he did. And didn’t pay any attention to what he was doing…and smashed Katie right into the big metal pole of the dugout. Tom and I both saw it happen, heard her head SMASH into the pole, and saw her sink to the ground. And start crying. Hoo boy.

All the surrounding parents were concerned, and one got us some ice but Katie didn’t really want it. We had a talk with Owen about paying attention. And cuddled Katie.

We gave her some Tylenol when we got home and after we ate lunch and she took a nap, she seemed just fine. But she’s got a nice goose egg. Her first minor injury. 🙁

Game 4: Raptors vs. Grasshoppers

Guess who got to play catcher tonight? Isn’t he just so stinkin’ cute?! (Tom sent me all these pictures because I stayed home with Katie since it was a night game.)

Tom said the pieces fit him perfectly. (The rest of the team is so tiny that Tom had to redo the entire thing in order to get it to fit him.) As usual, he had a great time!

Food discussion

So, of course I posted all about Owen’s issues and our new decision on a forum with some friends. I love the input I get—often things I’d never have thought of. They gave lots of advice—some things we’ve already tried and some things we just don’t want to do (mainly, let him make a bowl of cereal or a sandwich—himself—if he doesn’t like dinner). We don’t want to let him do that because then he’d just eat cereal or a PB&J every night. And we’re trying to get him to EXPAND his food choices.

The mom guilt part of me agrees that if he wants to make a sandwich he should be able to do that because it’s just food…and if HE makes it, at least I’m not…but the other part of me wants to be a hardass because I’m just SOOOOOO sick of it and dammit, he can eat what’s on the table or go hungry. Yes, I’ve literally reached that point. (All the years of the same issues over and over and over have hardened me a bit, I admit.) I mean, he managed to survive pre-k lunches not liking anything but obviously eating enough to not be hungry so why can’t he do that at home? Also, he’s not always going to be able to make a PB&J or grab cereal—if we’re out or at someone’s house, he needs to eat what’s given (not that it’s a terribly common event).

I just don’t know. Just when I think we’ve come up with our solution, someone else makes a point that changes our minds.

Oh, and to make matters more complicated, it’s also a possibility he could have some sensory processing issues. Sigh. His autism diagnosis has long been retracted, but the doc never did any type of food/texture testing, and I’m struggling to remember if we even answered any questions about it. At the time, we may have just thought he was still just young and being normal-kid-type picky and we were concentrating more on the other areas.

So of course if I pick the hardass route, we’ll likely find out he does have a sensory issue and then I’ll be wracked with mom guilt. But if we go the non-hardass route, we might never even know.

So in the next week I’ll be calling his pediatrician to see what we can get figured out. And in the meantime we’ll see how it goes.

Blurg.

The last straw.

Owen pushed my very last food button tonight. From now on he eats what we eat for dinner. And I predict he’ll go hungry for a few days.

That’s what I posted on Facebook after an extremely frustrating dinner. What happened? Well…as you all know, we’ve had issues with Owen and food since just about the time he started eating real food, but really about the last three years. We’ve tried SO many variations of feeding and mealtimes over the years that I’m honestly just at my limit.

So.

As per our current normal dinner rules, all Owen has to do is eat a tiny piece of what we’re eating (there’s a promise we won’t give him something we know he hates or won’t like (like pasta salad or sushi)).

So tonight was grilled chicken, steamed broccoli, and garlic bread. I know he doesn’t love chicken but will eat it. I know he doesn’t really like broccoli but he has eaten his one piece before without too much issue. And I know he loves the bread. His “extra” favorite foods were his yogurt and fruit.

Of course he saves the broccoli until last so it’s cold. And then when we remind him he needs to take his bite, he whines and takes the minutest nibble ever (I think I saw a tiny green speck on his tongue). We remind him he needs to eat the whole bite (it’s only like a 1/2″ piece). We go through the same spiel about how it might not be his favorite food—or even one he kinda likes—but he needs to take his one bite because that’s our current deal. Then he whines that he doesn’t have any yogurt left to dip it in—and we tell him that’s why he should eat it first. He then proceeds to play with it to avoid eating it and drops it in his water.

Well, I’m condensing the story a bit, so by this time Tom and I are at our limit so we fish it out and and say he still needs to eat it. He throws a fit so we take away his video game privileges for a day. He keeps on and then loses video games for the rest of the week. He loves his weekend video game time with daddy, so that causes a tantrum and he says he’ll eat it. I say it’s too late—he had plenty of time to eat it before now.

Now, I normally never reverse a decision, but after some quick back-and-forth we said if he ate it, he’d just lose his game time tomorrow. He said okay, so we were nice and gave him a fresh, non-water-soaked piece. And you’d have thought we were asking him to eat dog crap for all the gagging and whining he was doing. There was more drama about the stupid piece of broccoli…and that was the final straw.

We had already had this talk (months ago) that he had to do the one-bite thing or else we were switching to the eat-what-we-eat plan. That he was getting older and mommy was tired of making multiple meals at each meal time and he was old enough now to eat what we were eating. So he had been warned it would come eventually…so it just happened a bit sooner than planned.

We told him there can be foods he absolutely hates and doesn’t want to eat—and we won’t make him eat those—but they’ll be limited to a small list. If he doesn’t eat what we’re eating, he’ll be hungry. Plain and simple.

Oh, and Katie will be following the same plan, too. I’ve been thinking about it, and I just can’t go through three more years of this with her. And since Owen is doing it, it makes perfect sense.

Tom and I still need to discuss the exact terms, but we can decide specifics as we go. All I know is it is not going to be fun.

Kidisms 9

We were getting ready to take Owen to the bus stop:
Me: Are you ready to go?
Katie: No, I have to call daddy first.

Owen: I’m done playing with chalk. I’m going to play regular.

Me: Katie, let me check your diaper.
Katie: It has zero pee.

Me: Katie, you can’t grow up. You have to stay little forever.
Katie: No I have to grow up.

I put on my sun visor to go to the playground.
Katie: That’s Gramma’s hat!
