Parenting struggle #3,471:

Katie decided it would be a great idea to empty the entire 64-crayon box into another box so she could use the individual inner crayon boxes for some game she created with her jewelry. Seriously?

I love that she’s creative but things like this make me insane. I know I shouldn’t care because it’s just a damn crayon box but I just know the boxes will likely get ruined (never put away), the crayons will never go back in their original boxes, and the crayons will likely end up all over the house, broken and lost, because nothing ever gets put away because KIDS.

And now I’m feeling guilty that I’ve stifled her creativity over a $4 box of crayons. Ugh.

Happy birthday, Owen! Or not.

So I came downstairs and gave Owen a big birthday hug or four and we talked about his birthday and his sleepover that afternoon… I took a casual birthday picture.

I wore his baby face necklace and took a birthday picture with him.

I posted a happy birthday post on Facebook.

While he was at another birthday party, Tom and I gave some cuddles to Katie because we knew the rest of the day would be about Owen.

And it wasn’t until we were all eating dinner (with his friends!) that I realized it wasn’t his birthday. OMG, am I a bad mom or what?! I asked Owen why he hadn’t said anything and he just shrugged his shoulders and said it wasn’t a big deal.

That said, I knocked it out of of the park with his gift: 900 Pokémon cards. He couldn’t believe his eyes and was practically vibrating with excitement. 🙂

This is what it looks like to be the mom of a 10-year-old with two 10-year-old boys over for a sleepover. #thirdmargarita #soloud #thankheavensforbasements

I think we only had to go in about five times to tell them to quiet down, and they were out by 11:30.

Polar Vortex Day 1

We knew it was coming (school was even called off in advance) but it was still a shock to see it. Feels like -45°.

I stayed in bed because the kids can fend for themselves (and Tom had a late start) but eventually Katie came up to cuddle for a few minutes.

Then Tom went to work and I honestly hadn’t been planning to leave the house but we were invited down to the neighbor’s house for lunch and to just hang out…so we did. The kids had fun playing, we had a yummy lunch and birthday cake (for Enzo’s birthday), and I actually helped Stacey organize her pantry (yes, that’s fun for me!).

When we got home we turned our new heater on…and someone loved it. 🙂

And even though the furnace was working and it said it was 70° in the house I was still cold so pretty much sat under blankets next to the heater…

Today is Katie’s clothes.

Today Katie and I tackled her drawers. We took each item out and decided if it was time to let it go or keep it. She did pretty well, actually, but I did have to step in a few times and prompt her to get rid of some things that were bordering on too small or that she had bigger sizes of in her closet waiting. She also learned how to fold her clothes so they would fit nicely in her drawers. She actually had fun doing it—we’d let them watch the show with us so they’d have an idea what was going on.

She wanted to get rid of this wig until I made her try it on and then she loved it. Bad move on my part. 🙂

After about two hours we had this:

Plus a packed garbage bag of clothes and shoes to give to friends!

They never listen to me.

Me, sometime during the three weeks the kids were on break: empty your backpacks, take care of lunch bags, get out January lunch schedule, give me gym shirts to wash.

Them: we did / we don’t have anything / we didn’t get one.

Me, the night before school starts: put your paperwork in your bag, are you sure you don’t have a gym shirt to wash?

Katie: I’m good.

Katie, this morning 10 minutes before she gets on the bus: Oh, here’s my lunch sheet. And I guess my gym shirt did come home. And here’s my lunch box.

😣🙄😡

NINE MINUTES UNTIL 100% KIDLESS FREEDOM.

Katie cut her hair!

I’m crying. Katie brushed her hair on her own after her bath yesterday (something she’s done many times) and this is what I found on the floor by my sink when I went to bed. 😳 She decided to cut out a big knot instead of asking for help. And of course managed to cut way more hair than necessary.

The upsides are that she figured out a solution on her own and that with her crazy mess of curls we can’t even tell and she doesn’t need an emergency haircut.

Merry Christmas from the little beasts!

Yes, these masks might have freaked them out just a bit hiding in their big Santa bags. 😂

Tom and I were up before 7…but the kids weren’t—their phones were still outside their bedroom doors!! Well, if I was up they were going to be up [dammit!] so just as I was about to get Owen up he walked out, and then we had him wake Katie up!

Santa screwed up a little by using the same paper for our gifts, too, and not making sure ours all had name tags… The kids were too excited to see their paper on other gifts that weren’t in their Santa bags so ended up opening a few of ours. Oh well. Maybe next year Santa won’t start wrapping quite so late.

Both kids were excited to see a programmable robot that they’d previously asked for and forgot about… Plus Santa did bring some things they specifically asked for (ballet shoes and Pokémon cards) so they were happy. All gifts were open by 8am. 🙂

Christmas Eve Day

We spent the day with Uncle Rob and Aunt Dee at their new house! The kids played with Daisy, played in the snow, Owen shot his new bow (and lost an arrow in the snow!), made snowballs with Aunt Dee, and played games with Aunt Dee while is other three adults might have been napping. 🙂

Margarita buddies!

Santa Daisy

She was a big cuddle bug.

WHAT U TALKIN BOUT

The cousins were all having a ball playing together and I thought they’d have a blast playing “WHAT U TALKIN BOUT?” (the game where you try to say phrases while wearing dental mouthpieces—there are many versions of this game). Katie had bought it for Owen for Christmas and we weren’t set to open it for days but I am glad we did…we haven’t laughed so hard in a long time! It was definitely worth the $2.50 sale price at the dollar store.
