Most frustrating part of my day…

Putting Katie to bed at night is probably the most frustrating part of my day. She’ll be dead asleep so we put her down and then (most of the time) it’s an hour or more of ruckus and trips into her room before she actually calms down and falls asleep. Tonight this process started at 9…and I was still going at 10:48.

For those interested, it went kinda like this:

  • 8:30—Dead asleep napping on us, but we need to try and feed her before she goes down for good.
  • 8:40—Wake her up enough to eat but she only eats 2oz.
  • 9:00—Dead asleep, won’t burp. Lay down #1. Quiet.
  • 9:15—Crying! Get a burp, she’s out. Lay down #2. Quiet.
  • 9:30—Crying! Eats 3oz, burps, she’s out. Lay down #3. Quiet.
  • Tom falls asleep.
  • 9:45—Crying! Diaper change, cuddles/burping, and she’s OUT. Lay down #4.
  • 10:00—Screaming hungry bloody murder! But she only eats 1oz and falls dead asleep, won’t burp. Lay down #5. Quiet.
  • 10:20—Crying! Wide awake! Eats 1oz, lots of attempting to burp but nothing. Finally falls dead asleep about 10:45. Lay down #6…

At which point I wasn’t sure if she’d be up again or not, but luckily that was it. FINALLY. It’s such a good thing she sleeps all night (most of the time)…

Happy 11th Anniversary

Eleven years. Wow. It just kinda sneaks up on you every year (and even moreso this year since we’ve been a little busy with Katie).

We didn’t even try to get a sitter to do anything this year, though I’m sure our friends would have obliged. Instead, we made a family trip to Wilmington to go to Costco…and have our traditional Chinese meal (we did lunch instead of dinner, though).

Katie was a complete gem, sleeping the entire hour ride down, our entire hour in Costco, and about 75% of our lunch…then took a bottle and slept the entire way home. Of course, Owen was just as awesome, sitting in the cart with stuff piled all around him, not even noticing really because he was having fun with daddy’s phone. 🙂

We had a slight brush with fame at Costco…we saw Keith from Top Chef Texas fame (we’ve eaten at his restaurant, Catch, before). That’s as close to famous as I’m likely to get living here. And he said hi to me in passing, likely because I was staring at him. 🙂

Our lunch was really, really good. I picked a place off Yelp pretty much at random…just going by reviews and proximity to Costco…and we couldn’t have been more thrilled. Everything on the menu at Double Happiness was tempting, but I ended up with the Dry Wok Chicken and Tom got the Coconut Shrimp with Candied Walnut (and we got a Double Steamer dim sum basket). And surprisingly good Hot & Sour soup—as close to mine as we’ve ever had. We definitely want to go back there to try more of the menu!

All in all we had a really good day. How can we not when we have such a great little family?! 😀 (The only downside is that I forgot to take a picture of us to celebrate the day!)

Most challenging day-with-a-newborn yet.

I really wish I knew what made babies spit up. We just switched to a new formula, and it seems that she’s spitting up more. But it’s not all the time after every bottle which makes me think it can’t be the formula. (For example, at her 4 AM feeding she drank 5 ounces, didn’t burp, and went to sleep no problem. The bottle I’m giving her now, she drank an ounce and spit up. She drank two more ounces and spit up again. Same formula.) Sooo frustrating.

That said, I think today is my most challenging day-with-a-newborn day thus far. And I know it’s nothing even bad or rant-worthy because it could be soooooo much worse… But all morning it’s been eat, spit up, eat, nap for 5 min, screech, spit up, spit up, eat, spit up, 10m nap, screech, eat, spit up, lather rinse, repeat since 7a.

I think it’s just feeling worse because I got so little sleep last night (the least amount of overnight sleep I’ve gotten since she’s been home)—she didn’t fall asleep until after 11, was up at 3:30, and I didn’t fall back to sleep until around 5:30 (the last time I looked at the clock it was 5:20), then she was up screaming to eat at 7:15.

Man, I did/do NOT miss this. She’s been spoiling us (me) for sure…

Katie is one month old today!

The little girl did pretty well with her first monthly photo session…I got the shot before she spit up on her outfit! (And the matching sticker and onesie was completely by accident! That was what she had on overnight and it was still clean this morning so I left it on—then got out the stickers and saw that it matched perfectly!)

Subtly telling me what she thinks of this photo shoot? :))

Two decent outtakes:

Progress? Probably just luck.

So, after a handful of “nights” of Katie waking up at 4am to eat (and me writing about it yesterday)…last night—well, this morning—it was 6:45! But the price I paid is that she didn’t take her morning nap (which is what I count on to get things done).

And even though she slept in, I didn’t sleep great… I woke up at 3 when she had a mini in-her-sleep outburst, then at 3:45 when Tom’s alarm went off (vibration, but still), then at 5 when he actually got up and showered and I was somewhat paranoid listening for her (positive she’d be waking up ANY minute), then at 6 when I got up to pee…

So, YAY for Katie, but I’m still :zz::zz::zz:

Katie is regressing.

I know her schedule isn’t set in stone since she’s still so young, but I was really used to the 5a or 6a feeding. The past few nights it’s been 4a. 😐 And when she’s up at 4, that means she’ll be up again around 8, which doesn’t give me a lot of time to get anything done in the morning.

I know it’s still not bad AT ALL because I just have to do one nighttime feeding…but I’m more tired now than when she first came home and that just doesn’t seem right. |-|

:zz:

Owen holds Katie! Owen feeds Katie!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGojz3OUFZo

He finally agreed to hold her today! Thank heavens for iPhones so I could capture it—I asked him like I always do but I really wasn’t expecting him to say yes so I didn’t have my real camera handy.

He was practically giddy with excitement and was all smiles—it was SO cute!

Checking himself out in the mirror!

And then he was done…and off doing Owen stuff again.

ARRRRRR!!!

Only one feeding a night…but I’m still tired.

I love that Katie has only ever needed one feeding a night…but it’s usually at 5a, which means after I get done pumping it’s about 6a…at which point it’s nearly impossible to fall asleep again (because 1. it’s getting light out and 2. I know I have to be up around 7-7:30 to get Owen up and hopefully shower before Katie wakes up).

If I just had Katie, I’d generally get to sleep in until 8 or 9…but alas that isn’t the case. 😐 So, since Katie usually doesn’t go to bed until midnight…I’m getting five hours of sleep (minus the two times I have to get up to pee). Which sounds like a decent amount of time, until afternoon rolls around and I can barely keep my eyes open.

So, I’m a different kind of tired this time around…

Swiss cheese mommy brain strikes!

Sooooo, I didn’t realize until JUST AFTER the announcements went in the mail…that they were missing our little girl’s name! (I was copying and pasting from another application and completely forgot to make room for the name.) How embarrassing for an editor!

Of course, if you follow this blog at all, you obviously know her name is Katie Jean (named after my Grandma Len and my mom)…

P.S. Bonus points to anyone who noticed we forgot the name!

She finally woke up on her own!

We’ve been super super spoiled thus far, with Katie pretty much sleeping through the night since we brought her home!! (In this case, sleeping through the night = one feeding per night around 3-5a where we have to go in and wake her up.) Of course, instructions for newborns are to wake them up every 2-3 hours to eat, but I just couldn’t do that since she was sleeping SOOOO well. So, I conceded to wake her up that often DURING the day, but NOT at night. And things were going well. And then last night was the first night she actually woke up on her own! And then it was still only one feeding! Yay, Katie!

Sleeping baby snuggles

I really need to stop snuggling with my sleeping baby and get some stuff done. Right?

I posed this question on Facebook and got the following responses:

P.j. >>> No you don’t
Jennifer >>> Babies don’t keep!
Joe >>> No. No you don’t.
Liz >>> The “stuff” will still be there when Katie doesn’t want to anymore. Enjoy the moments while they are present.
Tracee >>> Nope. Snuggle in
Ann >>> My youngest is 15! No more snuggles with mom, so enjoy it while you can.
Karen >>> So sweet….enjoy every moment!
Sarah >>> Heck no, you don’t! Snuggle, snuggle, snuggle!
Kathy >>> SNUGGLE AS LONG AS YOU CAN!! Stuff will get done later!
Virginia >>> awww
Linda >>> she is too cute to put down!
Margarita >>> nope!
Lisa >>> NO WAY!! cause when they are 13 and 10 the snuggling just doesn’t happen 🙁 ENJOY it!!!
Kristin >>> Nope.
Stephanie >>> Nope! I snuggle just snuggle away ; )
Janet >>> Forget getting anything done. This time goes too quickly, Jennifer.

First Photo Shoot

How could Katie be five days old and we hadn’t had a “real” photo shoot yet? (By real I mean me doing a somewhat dedicated set up and snapping a bunch of shots…not a real session with a photographer.) I also wanted to do birth announcements and I didn’t have just the right pictures. Of course, she didn’t cooperate by staying super sleepy once I started manhandling her…but I did get one really cute one and a few decent ones.
