I’m a good girl daddy.

So I was trying to read the kids a book before bed but Katie just doesn’t have the patience to sit quietly so every time I started a page she’s shrieking (at something she sees on the page) or babbling or saying “Mama look!” Completely disruptive so that I couldn’t even hear myself reading. So we just looked at the pictures…and even then I gave up before the end of the book.

So then it was time to pick up toys and Katie picks up a book and says “story please?” and I said no it was time for bed. She heads over to Tom with her book and again says “story please?” He says no and she gets THE biggest pout on her face. But she tries again—with the puppy dog eyes:

Katie: Story please daddy?
Tom: Are you going to be a good girl Katie?
Katie: I’m a good girl daddy.

Tom and I both looked at each other like “Did she really just understand and respond with a full sentence?!”

So he attempted to read the story and only got through about a half page before he agreed it was time for bed. 🙂

He looks at this book every morning and every night.

This Lego Minifigure history book (LEGO Minifigure Year by Year: A Visual History) was a Christmas gift from Uncle Doug, Aunt Marie, and cousins Gabrielle and Robert—and he LOVES it! I’ll turn on his monitor in the morning and he’s flipping through pages. At night, that’s the book he wants me to “read” (I say “read” because he really just wants to flip through the pages and look at figures and ask me what their names are). Almost all of the figures he says “I want this for next Christmas.” 🙂

Owen noticed what was wrong!

I can’t believe I’ve read this book 5-6 times and never saw it…but in my defense, it’s just a graphic and there’s technically nothing to read on it. And I’m usually reading fast so I don’t start crying.

But then, after he noticed the 7 was missing…I noticed Wednesday was spelled wrong! TWO MISTAKES!

I contacted the company and they couldn’t believe in over 200 printings no one noticed! They thanked me and said they’d send a replacement book (which I declined, though maybe I should have accepted it so each kid could have one as a memento).

(Daddy’s Deployed is a completely customized children’s book for those with a parent deploying. The book features the name, gender, and physical attributes of, not only the child, but the parents as well!)

Daddy’s Deployed Book

So, in addition to the Daddy Dolls, I also got Owen a personalized book called Daddy’s Deployed. Of course I had it for two months before I could even bear to read it myself…and then I made Tom read it to Owen the first time because I knew I wouldn’t be able to get through it without crying (I was sitting behind Owen so he couldn’t see me). Owen did pretty well during the story, but did get a little teary and sad. Especially on the page where we’re all saying goodbye to daddy with sad faces. 🙁

But he asked to read it again the next night…and it was up to me. I steeled myself and got through it…even with Owen being sad again.

He’s also been sad on and off throughout the day for a few days now…back to saying how much he misses his daddy. 🙁 Thankfully it’s not as bad as its been in the past…but I’m keeping my fingers crossed anyway.

So then this afternoon Tom overheard Owen playing:

Owen: When daddy is deployed we are going to send him letters and packages and call and Skype and he will love it!

Awwww.

Busy Brother

Katie was up—and screaming—so I asked Owen to go in and keep her company for a few minutes while I took a quick shower. This is what I walked in to see (though in the pic I’d already grabbed her from the crib):

He had dragged his big bear AND his turtle into her room…and was reading from her books (well, reading in so much as it’s a picture book that has “one star, two cats, three balls, etc.” in pictures on each page).

Then when I got her out of the crib…I saw his two other bears in there!

What a busy brother he’d been during my five-minute-or-less shower!

The Monkey Shirt

I remembered to get out the Monkey Shirt in plenty of time with Katie…and Gramma Jean dressed her in it while we were out and about with the boy.

This is a tee that Grauntie Marge made for me when I was little that says “Auntie Marge loves Jenny” on the belly…and it got saved all these years. I forgot about it/had it well put away for Owen, so he didn’t get to wear it until he was a little too big for it.

And Owen, from September 11, 2011 (which, interestingly, I SWORE I blogged about, but it’s nowhere to be found).

Go on!

So we were watching this…

…and Owen was on the floor playing. He looked up and says “Go. No.”

Wait. What?

Me: Owen, what did you say?
Silence.
Tom rewound it.
Me: Owen, what does that say?
Owen: Go no.
Me: Owen! You just read your first word!
Owen: Can I have 15 minutes?

So…yay! He read his first word. But…boo! He’s switching letters (he also switches numbers).

Owen loves the book Ten Little Ladybugs and has taken to helping me read it—he says SCREECHES the numbers as I turn the pages. The screeching is normally VERY enthusiastic—and completely adorable—so I finally decided to have Tom record it. Of course, that was the night his performance was totally understated. I’ll still keep trying to get the other version. 🙂
