A Pinterest project non-fail thanks to a friend!

I had wanted to do an ornament wreath like I’d seen on Pinterest and had actually bought all the ornaments on clearance after Christmas! But I was afraid to attempt it on my own—I’m somewhat crafty, but Owen’s Lego cake fail seriously made me rethink my abilities to do anything crafy. So I enlisted the help of one of my friends and took all my stuff to her house. She was just going to help walk me through it while I did the work and we visited. Ha. HA HA. After I burned a hole in the ribbon during the first three seconds I was using the glue gun, she kindly took over. I felt bad, but she said as long as I didn’t mind her doing it, she had no problem because this type of stuff IS HER THING. Okay, you go, girl! I helped a tiny bit with the placement of ornaments, but she honestly did 99.5% of the work. And it turned out AMAZING!

She got to keep all of the leftover ornaments and ribbon, and I left with a tiny wreath to see if I can attempt it on my own. If I don’t do it before I leave, I told her I will give her all those supplies, too! 🙂

Gardening girl + ride along + kittens

We went to a friends house for a play date and Katie grabbed the gardening gloves and shovel. 🙂

20140527-220558-79558487.jpg

And enjoyed being driven around…

20140527-220746-79666058.jpg

She also managed to get up into and out of the trampoline (using the stepstool) which nearly gave me heart failure.

Then she got to pet a kitten (they have a few strays that they feed) and she loved it—“Kitty cat! Kitty cat!”

20140527-221114-79874306.jpg

Then she got up on the swing herself but needed me to push her. 🙂

You can’t beat a great morning spent with friends.

Snakes. Why does it have to be snakes?

Bugs? Don’t like ’em but I can deal. Frogs? Okay. Lizards? Fine. But snakes? AHHHHH.

I don’t do snakes.

Guess what Tom just found curled up in the garage…in the very center of our garage sale pile?!

20140514-102059.jpg

He poked at it with a stick to get it moving. It travelled around a bit—and was probably 4-5′ long. FEET.

And then, if that wasn’t freaky enough…IT SLITHERED INTO THE MOLDING AROUND THE GARAGE DOOR FRAME.

DISAPPEARED COMPLETELY.

SO IT’S REALLY INSIDE THE GARAGE NOW.

We need to move today. 😐 I’m not sure I can go in the garage again.

Tom looked it up and it’s apparently a rat snake?! Tom says it’s a good snake. Sorry, there’s no such thing as a good snake.

Here’s the conversation that happened on Facebook after I posted…

2014-05-14snakefacebook

A good report, a birthday, and a messy girl.

Both kids got a good report from our friends…and they told us we were right—they were quite easy and Owen was really polite. Yep, that’s Owen. 🙂 Tim only had one moment right after we put the kids in the car and left—he said Owen started crying saying he wanted his mommy. Tim assured him we’d be back in a few hours and that he was going to see his friends—and then asked if he wanted to watch a movie and the tears dried up immediately! 🙂

We went back to their house (after our house stuff was finished) to hang out and celebrate Tim’s birthday. And the boys took their usual photo (there’s a long story behind it):

Whose birthday is it? THIS GUY!

20140511-123225.jpg

Here’s their last photo from 2005:

OLD PHOTO WILL BE INSERTED HERE WHEN I FIND IT

They had other friends with kids over so there were like 13 kids total and Owen was in heaven. He enjoyed talking to the 8yo girl about Star Wars! I missed getting a picture of Katie IN the sand table but she had fun on the swing:

20140511-123325.jpg

And it had rained and there was some wet mulch and mud…so she was A MESS! So much so that she got a quick bath before we left (and her clothes got sprayed with stain stuff)!

And it was another late night for them—we headed home at 8:30!

House Hunting Day 3—Success!

We met our friends to transfer the kids and Owen was excited to go play with his new friends.

We met our agent at the first house and actually really liked it. It was quite similar to the Band-Aid house:

  • Four bedrooms…but an unfinished basement.
  • More hardwood floors…but not quite as open a floor plan.
  • A deck…but no fence possible.
  • Kitty corner from a playground…but everything felt a bit crowded.

But $200 cheaper a month. 😐

So it was back to the Band-Aid house to talk with the owner, who had requested to meet us. He wasn’t thrilled with the July 1 start date but he liked the 3-year lease…so apparently he wanted to see if he liked us…?!?!

Amazingly he is willing to put up a fence and some ceiling fans. It’s only three bedrooms but it’s got a HUGE finished basement with a full bath so will be great for (long-term!) guests! The one small bad/strange thing [that we didn’t realize in ANY of our searching thus far] is that bedrooms here typically have no overhead lights…so we have to buy lamps again.

So it was a very tough decision. I honestly thought we’d be good in either house, but my gut said the Band-Aid house. Tom was in the same boat…but I think the agreement to put up a fence sealed the deal, so we filled out the app, shook on it, then went to get certified checks…and breathe a sigh of relief. And panic a little because it’s a bit over our budget. But we’ll make it work because we have to.

Of course then we started thinking about things…and looked at the listing again. It says 4BR but we don’t remember four bedrooms—in fact, both of us were sure it was three. But if it’s the same as the first house, then it has four (because I remember thinking the basement bedroom made five). And we can use our own washer and dryer—but we’re pretty sure it’s a gas hookup so we may need to ask to have an outlet installed (I’m not buying a gas dryer AGAIN—we did that in Troy and sold it when we moved back here). And where are we going to put our deck set with no deck?! I guess it will be a party table in the basement.

So…exciting and still terrifying at the same time!

So here’s the Band-Aid house—the houses are very close together but at least it’s a house and not a townhouse!

20140511-103811.jpg

You can just see the corner of the kitchen (hardwoods), then the main living area with the fireplace, and the carpeted (?!) dining room (which will likely be a play room):

20140511-103830.jpg

The kitchen—with Corian counters and the gas stove on the island. He calls the appliances upgraded but they’re pretty basic (though I guess the fridge is a side-by-side with a water dispenser). We’re debating bringing our awesome stainless fridge and putting this one in the garage (then buying a cheap stainless one for our house in Jacksonville).

20140511-104929.jpg

Cool windows in the stairwell:

20140511-105928.jpg

The huge master bedroom:

20140511-105501.jpg

And the closets are BEFORE the bathroom like I wanted—not THROUGH the bathroom like we have now. 🙂 It has a soaking tub (not jetted like we have now) but we never used it anyway so no biggie.

20140511-111137.jpg

And the kids’ bath has two sinks like I wanted!

20140511-111214.jpg

There’s not much of a back yard…but at least there’s some nice grass!

20140511-111319.jpg

So we’re just waiting on the app and credit check to be run Monday morning so they can send us the lease to sign!

Visiting with old friends

Friends of ours live in Fairfax so we went to visit and have dinner with their family. (Tim was in the Marines with Tom back in the day.) They had also offered to watch the kids if we needed them to, so we were letting the kids get to know them. 🙂

Of course Owen immediately got along with them all (ages 7, 5, and 2) and had a blast on their playset. We had also brought Maggie and she was having fun playing with their lab!

20140511-091809.jpg

The kids were way off their sleep schedule but both did well—they were both wide awake as we drove home at 8:30!

Katie’s first popsicle

A mommy group friend invited us over after school to play on their waterslide (that Owen LOVES). Katie enjoyed it, too, along with the swingset and the trampoline.

20140507-083159.jpg

20140507-083219.jpg

Owen also ate a Popsicle—almost. He ate about half of it then wanted to save it. He was a bit upset when I said it wasn’t possible (it was about 85°)!

A friend making Katie laugh with funny faces!

Easter break park play date!

I told Owen we were going to the park and he was really excited. Then I told him who would be there (the core group of moms and kids from my mommy group) and he got EVEN MORE excited and said “My friends!!!!”

The other kids were super excited to see him, too—we really haven’t all been together (on a playdate) since before school started!

Running around with another group of boys who were playing shooting games. 🙂

20140417-222341.jpg

Then everyone ate snacks/lunch at the pavilion and then it was time to head home for Katie’s nap.

This was the best I could get as we were leaving the park!

20140417-222446.jpg

Park play date

Other than going to the wrong park first, we had a great time! It was a gorgeous morning and good to visit with mommy friends I don’t get to see that often anymore.

“Pony! Pony! Dirty!” (It had sand on it which I had to wipe off before she’d sit down.)

20140411-101750.jpg

Finally going down the big slide! She’d been at the top a few times but always turned around.

Bounce bounce!

We went over to Mitchell’s for Virginia’s birthday and the kids loved the trampoline!

20140406-205537.jpg

Caught in mid-air:

20140406-210017.jpg

Daddy does the bouncing:

Katie saw this bike and wanted it and made a beeline for it. Of course she couldn’t reach the pedals but she had fun sitting on it and being pushed in it.

20140406-210517.jpg

Both kids had A BLAST running around the big yard and getting on and off and on and off the trampoline. Virginia held Katie while they bounced and I think she liked that the best!

The kids got to stay up WAY past their bedtime because they were having SO much fun (and because we were visiting)…

Play group glasses

Unfortunately our mommy group doesn’t get together on a weekly basis anymore because the younger kids are in school, nap times conflict, and people are just busier…but today three of us met! It was great. Katie also had a fun time playing with new toys…and didn’t really play too much with the older boys (about age 3.5).

But she came up to me once tugging on me and saying “Mama! Mama!” And I looked down to see this. This is why I love having my phone immediately available in my pocket. 🙂

Nanny Alice, Day 4

Naptime project!

20140304-134814.jpg

Alice said he completed 90% of it on his own!

Their final dinner:

20140304-135253.jpg

Post-dinner bike ride!

20140304-135316.jpg

Both kids were in bed when we rolled in about 7:30…and both got a good report overall! Katie has lots of attitude now and Owen had a few grouchy spots but nothing major. Neither missed us, which is a good thing! And Alice wasn’t waiting in the driveway (though she was packed to leave!)…so we consider it a major success!

HotAmi 2014, Day 2

Good morning!

20140304-104910.jpg

We ran some errands then headed to our group lunch spot:

It sounded (and looked) better than it tasted:

The whole group:

20140304-105457.jpg

Then it was back to the house for visiting, games (trivia, which my team came in fifth of five!), and fun! I missed pictures of the delicious catered Cuban dinner we had!

Cigars with Sheryl—a tradition!

Tom and Elle!

We knew we’d have an early morning so we said goodbyes around 11!

HotAmi 2014, Day 1

Aside from my usual 4:45am potty trip, I slept in until 7:41! WOOHOO!

We went to our host’s house to carpool to a Cuban lunch:

Eddy, Sheryl, Tom, Me

Then we joined him on errands…which included Costco and Total Wine:

Julie,

Then it was back to the house to visit and hang out before dinner.

20140303-182538.jpg

And then Sheryl was having issues getting the iPad to take a picture so we were laughing. 🙂

20140303-182627.jpg

On our way to meet for the “high end” dinner!

20140303-182737.jpg

We were originally going to do the “budget” dinner…but then learned that a forum friend from California that I’ve really wanted to meet was going to be attending as a last-minute surprise so we switched. So we got to sit next to Brett and hear lots of Apple stories (super interesting to me)—he was a top engineer at Apple for many years and just recently retired. You know Siri? That was him. HDR on your phone? Him. AppleTV? His team. Just fascinating.

And another California peep, Darren:

20140303-184541.jpg

After a nice dinner and dropping people off at hotels, it was back to the house to visit for just a tiny bit until we called it a night—the previous night was 12:30 and tonight was 11:30 and we were exhausted!

Pre-HotAmi Dinner

After we checked in to the hotel it was straight to the sushi restaurant for dinner with friends. We had seen most of the small group last year but I was SUPER EXCITED to see Katie, one of my very bestest friends whom I hadn’t seen IN SEVEN YEARS! SEVEN YEARS! (It hadn’t felt like that long since we do talk online and text/call now and again…but it’s obviously not the same as seeing each other in person.) I think she was even more excited than I was, and we hugged hello for a good two minutes!

It’s a long-running joke that the two of us share a brain because we think a lot alike, have the same views, like the same things, have finished each other’s sentences, etc…and it was proven again tonight—remember we haven’t seen each other in seven years and really only talk on forums…yet we both wore black capris, a purple shirt, and a black jacket.

20140228-235031.jpg

We visited with friends until after midnight then headed back to the hotel to crash—we hadn’t been up that late since I don’t know when…and were exhausted from a long day on the road.

Nanny Alice, Day 1

Our friend Alice (actually a professional nanny—though usually for much older kids!) is staying with the kids while we go to Florida. The kids met her about two weeks ago when she came for two nights to meet them and Owen was excited to have her back.

This was the first picture we got on the road—some pre-nap cuddles!

20140227-153841.jpg

Maggie and the kids enjoying the nice weather, the bubbles Alice brought, and playing swords!

She spoiled the kids with a fun dinner: Owen got a caterpillar hot dog and Katie got hot dog palm trees. Both got strawberry flowers:

20140303-204719.jpg

20140303-204738.jpg

And she braved giving Katie yogurt:

20140303-204805.jpg

My honest first thought was What is she doing to me? Now the kids are going to expect fun dinners all the time?! But my immediate next thought was Oh what a super special surprise that only Miss Alice does! 🙂

Jumping Birthday Party

We had a birthday party for one of our best friend’s kids at the bounce house place today.

20140217-202852.jpg

Being goofy on the bounce house:

How she eats pizza:

20140217-203644.jpg

20140217-203721.jpg

And how she eats a cupcake:

Around the time we wanted to leave, we couldn’t find Owen anywhere. Tom and I each took a turn looking (and there’s only so much you can see without actually going into the bounce houses yourself) and neither of us could find him in the throng of kids. Turns out, he was in the under four area playing with blocks. Yep, it was time to leave! But a great time was has by both kids!

The post-party party

We had the gang over after the gymnastics party so we could hang out and visit—with everyone’s busy schedules (and with Trimble’s living back on base instead of in the same neighborhood) we rarely get together anymore. We ordered pizza for dinner and had a few drinks while the kids played. We had Owen open his gifts sporadically throughout the night and then had him blow out candles on his cake (I had forgotten candles for the gymnastics party). He loved opening his presents and pretty much every response to every gift was an excited “WHAT!?!!” It was super cute.

Then he opened his big gift from us—a used iPhone 4—and he looked at it like “Huh?” and immediately said “Daddy, this is yours!” and tried handing it to him. He completely didn’t understand that it was for him, even after I showed him the Lego Indiana Jones wallpaper. He was just too excited about all the other Lego/Ninjago/Star Wars stuff. We should have kept it until after all the excitement of the day was over.
