Katie had a birthday party here today. It wasn’t actually that bad—fairly quiet in the grand scheme of things. And she had a blast.

Birthday sleepover
We let Katie have a sleepover with Sophia for her birthday—I think it was the first “real” (non-family) for both. Both girls had a ball. We only had to tell them to quiet down once and I think there were both out by 10:30.
Katie picked bundtinis for her cake:
And walking her home in the morning!
Birthday cake pop!
We met friends at the park for a few hours and they surprised Katie with a birthday cake pop!
Katie met Carrots today.
Our neighbors have a pet rabbit. Katie finally got to meet her today. She is sooooo soft. (I don’t remember rabbits being THAT soft.)
Sparklers and smoke bombs.
Since we went out last night to watch real fireworks, we were just going to do some little fireworks at home. I went to the store to buy some and guess what? Turns out fireworks are illegal in Illinois so it was a pretty boring evening. We just had a campfire and neighbors came over so the kids still had fun with the sparklers and smoke bombs but we can’t wait to go to Michigan and do some real fireworks. (Get ready Gramma Jean and Grandpa David!)
When the Six Flags fireworks started we thought we might be able to see them from our front yard or the street but we walked all the way to the church and we could just see them through the trees.
Surprise cupcakes!
We were at a local park with friends and there was a birthday party there. When it was over they came over and offered us their leftover cupcakes! It worked out perfectly as there were six kids and two adults and we got eight cupcakes! They also gave us Jello cups, spoons, plates, napkins, and wipes!
When the weather is so great you change your plans and end up here.
We were a playground and the weather was really nice and I kept thinking it would be a perfect day for Six Flags…so we went! I texted friends and they were able to meet us there! Yay!
But first, a bit of backstory.
I love rides. Always have. I remember riding carnival rides all day with friends out at Hanson Hills. And Cedar Point with my dad and cousins (one of the best days ever was an overcast/threat-of-rain day where there were so few people there that we could have just stayed on the ride to ride again if they’d have let us). Tom and I even went to Cedar Point together back in the day. And then I gained weight. And gained weight. And then, shortly after we were married, Tom and I went to Kings Dominion and I had to get off a ride because the safety harness wouldn’t close and I felt so horrible that I gave up on all rides and parks after that. For 15 years. Until I recently lost the weight. So when we moved here—two miles from an amusement park—I was going to make the most of it. And I foolishly bought season passes for all of us because I was excited about it. Kind of forgetting that my kids weren’t big on rides. And apparently Tom isn’t anymore, either. 😭
So a trip to Six Flags isn’t as exciting for them as you’d think. And it’s actually a bit of a bummer for me because they don’t even want to go on the little rides (like the swings) so I can’t even go on those so I have to spend the whole time walking by rides I can’t go on. Katie likes the baby rides but we’re obviously not going to spend all day on those. And Owen is too big for those.
Now, our passes are also good for the water park—which they would love—but it’s so big that we would have to stick together and I’d have to follow them around… And that’s not much fun for me. I’d much rather go to our small water park where I can trust them to play on their own for hours at a time and I don’t even have to put my suit on.
So, needless to say, we obviously won’t be buying season passes again…but since we’ve already bought them, we’re going to use them. So here we are, waiting for our friends. I’d hoped that maybe being with a friend would get Owen on more rides… The sky looks a little threatening but it’s just the phone—it was gloriously sunny. Owen wasn’t thrilled to be taking the picture.
This is the type of ride Katie likes.
Owen did go on a teacup-style ride with his friend and said he might go on it again. Baby steps? Katie, on the other hand, loved it.
Both kids did okay on Justice League—it’s just a ride on a track on an “enhanced-motion vehicle” (it spins and moved around) where you get to shoot at things like a video game.
A ride I made Owen go on because our friends had to leave and Katie wanted to go on it. He survived.
The train. Which they both liked. Because of course it does nothing.
And then… Tom texted saying he was getting out of work early and was coming to meet us!! So he surprised the kids and was just standing there as we walked by. I wish I could have gotten Katie’s reaction.
We went on the mini roller coaster together and they liked it. BABY STEPS. 🙂
Look who we ran into at the park!
They were just getting done with morning camp and we were just arriving to go to the playground!
Katie loves the pole.
They still like the baby swings. The only rule is that they have to get in and out of it themselves because I am too old to be picking them up, putting them in, and trying to wrangle them out.
Kids + smoke bombs = excitement!
We went to the neighbors for drinks and ended up getting out some fireworks for the kids. They had a blast!
Massage business
Katie was playing down at Sophia’s house. Stacey texted me to tell me the girls had set up a massage business and they wanted me to come see it. I couldn’t pass up the invitation so I went down.
They had a little waiting room set up with books. Each of them was taking turns giving each other massages. Whoever was on the couch got to pick the song that was playing and when the song was over it was the next person’s turn.
No drama at the moment.
With these two, you take it when you can get it.

Naturally Slim, Round 2
When it’s time to get serious about Naturally Slim again. Plus I already have my walk in for the day. #icandothis #ididitonceicandoitagain #failureisnotanoption #facebookaccountability
Lunch!
20 minutes later
I posted the above on Facebook and within minutes, a friend suggested we support each other by checking in via text message. I knew a bunch of my friends were all wanting to reboot as well, so asked who would be interested and quite a few were so I decided to start a Facebook group where we can all post and commiserate and help each other out. I think by the end of the day we had maybe 25 people and a week later we are around 50!
Owen’s first soccer game at the park district!
The wintery weather didn’t make for a very nice day (we were in winter coats, hats, and gloves) but everyone was excited!
Katie kept busy waiting for the game to start.
Unfortunately, I had a bit of a bad start as I decided to take a shortcut across a little grassy area to go look at a park map…and I ended up in inches deep swampy muck. I bet you can imagine how wonderful that felt in 35 weather not 15 minutes into our 1.5 hour stay.
Much to our surprise (honestly), Owen scored TWO goals!! Part of it was due to him getting better…but (honestly) part of it was due to the other team not being quite as good. But it was super exciting—and they ended up winning (I think) 4-1!
Owen really needs a haircut but he has so far refused.
When you find the perfect shirt for your business…
Check out the awesome shirt I found at Old Navy (thanks to Heidi inviting me to help her shop). Margaritas for my senoritas!
When a friend asks if she can come over and play with makeup, you always say yes.
Heidi and I always manage to have a good time, and this was no different!

A revisit of the Welcome to Illinois dinner.
From Jami:
So… back in February (cough cough), we had a dinner to welcome the Hudsons to IL. I finally got around to downloading my memory card this weekend. Oops.
Owen was the photographer on the group shot!
Owen made new friends!
We have new neighbors moving in across the street but they haven’t officially moved in yet—and we haven’t even met them. But today I looked out and saw two boys about Owen’s age playing catch. So I told him he should go over and introduce himself. He was so excited he couldn’t get out of the house fast enough, saying “I feel really good about this!” 🙂
Of course I spied from the living room. 🙂
He ended up playing with them for hours and they were back and forth between yards and Katie even got involved for a little bit.
Owen reported their names, that they are in 4th and 5th grades, they will be moving in this summer, and they also have one more younger brother in 2nd grade.
It was great to see him so excited!
Walking home from a battle.
Owen was at a playdate and the mom sent me this pic. Yep, that’s my boy.
Owen’s class had a guest today.
Owen came home from school excited to tell us they had a guest in their class today who was a sports reporter (that was a family member of friends). Later I saw this Facebook post.
Can you spot him?
Have you ever heard of a box maze?
This is the most insane box maze. When I first heard about it I thought it would be something simple like boxes taped together. Not even close. This is an annual event with a week-long prep with computer drawings and major construction and tons of volunteers and it’s amazing and so well worth a visit. There are slides and tunnels and stairs and rooms and moving parts and fireworks (LEDs on the ceiling) and people throwing “rocks” in certain rooms… They provide knee pads (soccer there’s a lot of crawling) and flashlights (which I laughed off but it gets pitch black in areas). I just wish it was easier to get pics inside (there are lots of kids and people and you follow each other through so if you stop you hold everyone up). Tom and I went through twice and didn’t even see half of it. We let the kids play for over an hour (we saw lots of friends there) and they would have stayed longer.
These two pics are grabbed from the Facebook event page.
And the computer layout they had posted on the wall.
Sticks make perfect fishing poles.
Jumping again!
A friend invited us to the local jump place and the kids needed to get rid of some energy on their day off…
Welcome to Illinois Axe Murderer Dinner
Our Tivo friends Jami and David prepared a dinner in our honor to welcome us to Illinois. It was originally going to be our first dinner there…until we ended up going last-minute to one of their previous dinners. As usual, everything was DIVINE…and we came home with leftovers once again. 🙂
I wanted to try my infamous selfie shot but we went the easy route since the kids were with us—Owen was our group photographer.
The Menu
Searing the sous vide prime rib.
Checking on the kids who were being amazing in the living room. They had their iPad, Netflix, and pizza…the kid trifecta.
Part of the aftermath.
I hate when they get off their sleep schedule but I have good memories of sleeping in the car on the way home from family events (and being carried into the house by my dad) that I feel it’s only fair they get to experience it, too. 💗 Katie was out within five minutes; Owen took about 10.
Owen’s 9th birthday sleepover!
We decided to do a big summer party again so Owen invited two friends to spend the night.
Katie was thrilled to be able to play Xbox with the boys.
Pizza!
Katie helping get the cake ready. (Owen picked it out at Sam’s Club yesterday.)
Oliver and Brandon
Everything went really well. They were crazy loud at times but they were all really well-behaved and were in bed by 11 and had stopped chatting by 11:30…
Internet axe murderer friends are the very best.
We have some foodie friends who always make the most incredible-looking meals and we are always jealous when we see the pics on Facebook. But tonight our wishes came true and we were invited to a dinner! (It was last-minute as fill-ins but we didn’t care—if Jami and David ever invite you to dinner, you do whatever you need to do to make it happen!! In our case it was get a last-minute sitter to pick up the kids from Parents Night Out at the rec center and take them home and put them to bed.)
Holy shitballs was that an amazing multi-course meal. Here are just a few pics…and yes, I missed a few courses because wine. We might not need to eat at all tomorrow, though the leftovers will be tempting. Totally worth the 2.5 hours of drive time. Internet axe murderer friends are the very best. 💗
Sesame butter and radish chive tea sandwiches. Aged Gouda. Chorizo foam and goat cheese chantilly with bread sticks. Prosciutto-wrapped artichokes.
The first bottle of delicious wine…
Sous vide pork belly on smoked gouda mac and cheese
Sous vide potatoes and filet mignon (missing bearnaise in the pic)
We then ended the evening with a super fun game and were on the road home by 9:30. A great time was had by all…and we can’t wait to do it again!
We make our own sidewalks.
Our side of the street doesn’t have sidewalks so our neighbors both snow blow paths.
Owen’s first friend birthday party!
Sports at the rec center was a great party!
This puzzle needs to be a drinking game.
My friend Heidi and I worked on this stupid puzzle for three hours and this is all we got done.
We joked that it should be a drinking game: take one drink if you try a piece and it’s wrong and take two drinks if you actually find a piece!
Waiting for friends…
They were both super excited to have Sophia and Enzo over today after not having seen them for almost two weeks.
