Year: 2014
Katie loves her kitchen!
We got her a new kitchen from IKEA and she loves it. It’s in the basement and she’s always sneaking down there to play. Sometimes I even make it down there with her. Her favorite thing to do is put stuff in the microwave and cut her foods (we have a few sets that attach with Velcro so they can be “cut”).
First rainy school day!
Luckily we all had raincoats because we apparently lost all our umbrellas (minus Katie’s from Grandma Marsha!) in the move. Katie was thrilled because she got a new (new) coat and new (used) boots to wear for the first time! She couldn’t quite get the hang of the umbrella so Owen held it.
And then she noticed WATER and of course HAD to play in it. 🙂
Then walking home with the umbrella…
Where’s Miss Katie? Here I am!
Katie Tantrum #84
Someone wanted to sit on my lap!
Perfect use of a pet bed!
A tutu and a sock? Pure Katie.
Random Katieness
She loves “ice” (she can repeat dice if we say it, but then she reverts back to saying ice).
She lost her ice… She was attempting to put it in her pocket…except her leggings didn’t have pockets so she shoved it down her pants and then couldn’t find it.

First day of school artwork!
Shape Graph, Colors, and a Puppet
I love seeing all the stuff he brings home! The first one was (as best as we can gather) some type of game where the teacher put a random assortment of shapes in front of everyone and they had to color in what they were assigned. The other one was him reading the colors and knowing what they were and a puppet of himself that we could get NO story on.
“I had none rectangles.” 🙂
This explains the drool spots.
Katie has been taking a bit later naps lately which means sometimes I have to wake her up to go get Owen. (I guess I could leave her sleeping since she IS locked in her room and I’m only gone about 10 minutes…but it’s time for her to get up anyway and I know how much she LOVES to go get Owen.) So I had to wake her up today…and found her like this. Which explains why I often see huge wet spots on her pillowcase.
Babies and adults!
A special treat—a new water sprinkler!
Our first circus!
Today we took the kids to the Big Apple Circus! Tom and I had watched a PBS special on them years ago and always wanted to go…so when I found out they were going to be local, it was a no-brainer. Owen was SUPER excited to go and knew all about the circus, though I honestly have no idea how because I don’t think we’ve ever talked about it, read books about it, or anything.
We opted for the cheap seats since they claimed there was not a bad seat in the house. They were pretty truthful and I was happy with our seats—they were perfect for us because we were right at the top of the steps in the very outermost ring with no seats in front of us right below the A/C! (As it turned out, there were lots of empty seats and we likely could have moved closer, but we just stayed where we were.)
This is where Katie sat to watch about a third of the show.
Another third was from Tom’s lap. And the last third, well…you’ll see a picture later. 🙂
We all oohed and ahhed as one girl got into the little box. AND THEN A SECOND GIRL CRAWLED IN WITH HER!
Goats riding on ponies! They also had dogs riding on the ponies!
Spinning brothers! Amazing!
The last third of the show was her running around in that section of seats. 🙂 She did really well overall and I was happy to let her run there since she sat still the whole first part.
Amazing balancing act. All of those pieces she’s standing on wobble and roll.
The final act—trapeze artists! Owen LOVED them.
The butterflies on the walls at the end.
As we were waking out, I asked Owen what his favorite part was.
Owen: The boing boing at the end!
Which, of course, referred to the trapeze artists doing their final jump/dive into the net to get down from the high wires. 🙂
Then we stopped to eat and didn’t get home until almost 8:00. At which point Owen was still talking about it. 🙂
Not only does Owen eat burgers…
Laundry Helper
I love that the door keeps slowly closing on her and watching her try to figure it out. 🙂
I love the chilly weather with all the windows open…
Around the block in the front seat.
From 9/17. Oops.
We had driven to the playground on the next street over so I let her sit in the front seat on the way home.
My morning mess
Backyard Haircut
It was time for Owen to get a haircut—he wasn’t letting me put any gel in anymore so that was the alternative. Since it was so nice out, we did it in the back yard.
This is just to show how long it had been and how much we cut off.
I didn’t get a final picture because I was in starting the bath. 🙂
Today’s Tantrum: She couldn’t find the page with Yoda on it.
How Katie picked up toys this morning.
I think Twitter is drunk.

Katie was refusing to come downstairs.
Me: Katie, I have a new book for you!
Katie: OKAY! Okay! I’m coming! I’m coming!
Katie: Charlie’s in the kitchen.
Me: Yep, kitty’s in the kitchen.
Katie: No! Katie’s right here! [She obviously thought I said Katie, not Kitty.]
Gramma Marsha? Where are you? Where’s Gramma Marsha? Where’s Gramma Marsha go? Grampa Dave? Where’s Grampa Dave go?
She’s been saying this forever but I don’t think I’ve written it down. When she wants to be carried:
Katie: Mama/Daddy I want to carry you.
Katie: Mama I want chewies.
Me: No, you need to finish your bunnies first.
Katie: No! Chewies!
Me: Sorry, no. Bunnies.
Katie. Okay okay okay!
I was getting Katie ready for bed and she really liked her skirt.
Katie: NO TAKE BALLERINA OFF!
Getting dressed in the morning.
Katie: NO TAKE BALLERINA OFF!
That’s one way to sit in a chair.
Welcome to MOPS!
Just got back from the first MOPS (moms of preschoolers) get together and holy crap was it overwhelming. It wasn’t the typical first meet as they’re still working out child care, so instead of small groups of 6-8 moms each with kids being watched elsewhere, it was about 60 moms plus 60+ kids at a local park. Egads.
I had hoped for a bit more organization (which would have come if it was a regular meeting) but unfortunately it was just kind of mass chaos with everyone wearing their name tags and just trying to search out people with matching groups (blue stars, pink stripes, orange stars, etc.). And the anal part of me was going insane because it was just written on the tags (“blue stars” or “pink stripes”) instead of actually using, you know, a blue star or pink stripe to make it stand out. So we just walked around staring intently at everyone’s chests. 🙂
The nice thing is the group was very diverse with all sizes and shapes and ages and colors. Most of them are army wives (since it’s based at an army base!) but there are a few marine wives. 🙂 Most of our group was there and we all shared basic getting-to-know-you stories. The mentor mom for our group is only two years older than me (43) but has a 21yo, an 18yo, and a 15yo!
I just hope I get along well with my group because they are going to be a big part of my acquaintances/friends for the rest of the school year (and time here). They were all nice enough, but there was no one that I really hit it off with…yet, I’m hoping. But I know these things take time.
Parenting is hard. Let’s have a drink.
Before it was total chaos:
Katie actually did pretty well. I didn’t hover (I couldn’t if I wanted to actually meet and talk to my group) and she came back to me now and then for a snack break. Or a few times I was able to watch her run around—and hold my breath as I saw her go up a 6′ metal ladder to get to the slide. She has no fear…and survived just fine.
