Owen loves car rides, so when Tom came home from work today, he coerced Owen into the passenger seat for a mini car ride! Then off they went at a whopping 2mph down the street. When they came back into sight, Owen was in Tom’s lap driving—and was having a ball! The rest of the night he kept saying “More drive! More drive!” 🙂
Owen just LOVES playing in water. The pool, the water table, the hose, the sprinkler, etc… So tonight we were out watching him play in the sprinkler and he started asking for the “other water” so we switched sprinklers and it was like his energy was renewed! So cute.
I am cleaning the oven (gotta love autoclean!) and just went downstairs to get Owen a snack. I looked at the oven to see how much time was left and it said 2:39. I looked at the microwave (right above it) to see what time it was and it said…2:39!
Hmmm. Wait.
Does the oven actually show the time remaining on the cleaning cycle or does it show the time (it’s been 3 years since I used it)??? And then as I was standing there thinking about it, the oven clock went to 2:38 and the microwave went to 2:40.
What are the chances that I’d walk down at that precise moment? Bizarre.
I was just in reading him his pre-nap story…when he just up and leans over and licks my arm. Again and again. And again. And again and again. I have absolutely NO idea where that came from…but it was certainly a great game for him (which I egged on, of course, because his laughter is like a drug).

Owen loves the book Ten Little Ladybugs and has taken to helping me read it—he says SCREECHES the numbers as I turn the pages. The screeching is normally VERY enthusiastic—and completely adorable—so I finally decided to have Tom record it. Of course, that was the night his performance was totally understated. I’ll still keep trying to get the other version. 🙂
Owen got his first real taste of commercials tonight while watching The Cat in the Hat movie on TV. Every commercial break we heard “More cat! More cat! More cat!”
Poor kid pretty much only knows Tivo or videos on the iPhone or iPad.
I mentioned earlier that the older section of our neighborhood had more trees down, but when I finally went out and about, I noticed A LOT more damage. Even on the next street over (which is still considered the “new” section, though the houses are 1-2 years older than ours)…a bunch of houses had missing siding.
In a drive through our original neighborhood about two miles away, a lot of shingles were ripped off and trees were blown over. Sadly, the gorgeous weeping willow that was at our old house was completely demolished (and I am kicking myself for not taking a picture of it beforehand—which I was going to post about because it was SO big and SO cool looking).
So we were VERY lucky that absolutely NOTHING happened here.
You probably can’t hear it, but at the very beginning, he’s quietly saying grasshopper, because there was one on that plastic tower that he was trying to shake off. When I finally made the connection between what he was seeing and saying is when I come in.
We have probably 50 apps (half of them paid for) for Owen on the iPad, but ever since he discovered Tom’s games, he throws a shit fit (probably 75% of the time) if I try to get him to play his own age-appropriate games. It’s getting to the point where we’re going to delete our stuff or take it away from him entirely.
And it’s not so much that Tom’s games are going to scar him for life or anything, but rather that they’re more complicated and Owen gets frustrated because they don’t “work” for him or he opens up the website or tries to buy the full version of a free app or whatever. AND we paid money for apps he loved until he found the other ones. KIDS!
Initially we had our apps on separate pages in separate folders, but it didn’t take him long to figure out how to open other folders and swipe to get to other pages (where our stuff is).
So I decided we’d just have new rules. He can play anything on the first page and in his folders. Anything else, and the iPad gets taken away. And we had to start somewhere… This video comes in after I’ve already explained it once and he was already getting worked up. I know, poor kid. Having to follow rules. :>>
And with most of his tantrums, it was over about as soon as it started when he got sidetracked by wanting to watch Pocoyo or play with his trains or something.
It still grinds me that the pool closes after Labor Day weekend—it’s the south, it stays warm a little later than that. :## So anyway, this was probably one of our last visits…and he had a blast!! (I just wish he’d remember that every day when I ask him if he wants to go and he has a meltdown because he doesn’t want to go.)
Again, we didn’t want to waste the full tub of water left over after Irene…so we let Owen take a bath in it…with jets and bubbles! And of course, he LOVED it!!
Tom was burning twigs and dead bushes from the yard, and as soon as Owen saw the fire pits, he exclaimed VOLCANOES (or, in his exact terminology—canos!). 🙂 He stood on the deck and watched them and was so into them…
I finally just sat him in the chair where he sat for a good 20 minutes just watching and chattering about the canos…telling them to “wake up” when they started to die down. Tom also said he had to feed them, so Owen was saying “nom nom nom.”
Today has been about the most picture-perfect day weather-wise. No humidity, about 74 degrees, sunny, and blue skies! We spent three hours outside this morning—me playing with Owen and Tom getting the yard back in order (picking up twigs, mowing the lawn, unleashing the patio furniture and toys). If you didn’t know, you’d never guess there was a Cat 2 hurricane through here.
But then he went to check on a friend’s home across the subdivision, and said there are a crap ton of trees down everywhere, across the road, in yards, etc. We lucked out by being in a new area (where they cut all the trees down) and the older section had all the problems. People are now burning the remnants and the neighborhood smells like campfire!
Since we had filled the tubs with water to ride out Hurricane Irene, we didn’t want to waste it all by just letting it empty, so we added some hot water and let Owen take a bath in a FULL TUB! Of course none of those pictures really turned out, but he had a blast…
