What an eater!

So last night didn’t go as I expected. What else is new, right? :))

It took forever (it seemed) to put him to bed. I think we started at about 7:45 or 8 and the last time I looked at the clock (when he was still wiggling about) it was 9:30.

So, I figured, cool—he might sleep until 3:30 or 4:30.

Ha.

HA HA.

He was up at—are you ready?—12:30! HE ONLY SLEPT THREE HOURS! I debated just giving him a tide-me-over bottle but then thought no, I might as well just do our usual routine, so I made the full 6oz. And the little bugger snarfed it…and wanted more! So I ended up making another 2oz!! 88|

So I was back in bed by 1:30 and he was still wiggling away with his mobile on…but he was quiet, so all was well. And then he slept until 5:30—or four hours. Which, I remember being excited about him sleeping four hours in a row—but after nights of six and seven hours, four sucks. Especially since I thought maybe since he only slept three at first, the long shift would come second. Nope. Stinker.

Then when he got up at 5:30, I made another 6oz bottle (normally I would do 4oz but I had a feeling)…and he ate the entire thing! I hoped he would go back down for an hour or two (because I was exhausted) but, alas, he woke up when daddy came home from the gym (to shower) so we were both up for the day! XX(

But, holy wah, by 6am he had already eaten 14oz, or just about half of what he has normally been eating in a day (anywhere from 28-36, but usually about 32)! As of 11:30, he had eaten 22oz! I can’t wait to see how much his total is for the day. I am hoping he eats enough so that he doesn’t wake up tonight and sleeps right through to (at least) 6am. But I am guessing it’s a growth spurt and the non-sleeping will continue.

I know it’s only been four months (his four month birthday is next week) but at this rate, I am not sure he will have a sibling because I really don’t want to go through this again. |-|

Dental is expensive, too!

Yeah, so I went to the dentist today. Love love love the hygienist and the dentist…but not what they recommended. XX(

Yeah, I need a $500 bite guard. Because I grind my teeth and clench my jaw. This I know because previous dentists have told me.

However.

Not a single one of them ever showed me just what was happening…the ridges along the bottom of my top front teeth? From grinding. My shorter teeth? From grinding. (I know, I never even thought about some of my teeth being shorter than others! She said she saw a 2mm loss on a few of them! HOLY WAH!)

She also wondered if I had TMJ issues and I said yes, I can’t chew gum, anything really chewy hurts, my jaw clicks and pops—and she piped up, yep, I have TMD:

WHAT ARE TMJ / TMD’s?

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) occur as a result of problems with the jaw, jaw joint and surrounding facial muscles that control chewing and moving the jaw. These disorders are often incorrectly called TMJ, which stands for temporomandibular joint.

And a bite guard (to be worn mostly at night) should help with all of that. They sent it in to insurance to see if it would be covered, but we aren’t holding out hope.

After I had my mouth open for the x-rays and the cleaning and the exam, my jaw was about dead. The dentist then said “This will hurt a bit now, but should help later” and then stuck her fingers in my mouth and massaged the tendon around the jaw. Egads, that was painful.

They also saw some groundwork for cavities, so now I have this special paste (at $16/tube) that I have to apply to my teeth every night to try and stop the process. (I think she called it recalcifying.)

And I do have one cavity that needs work soon (the appointment is next week).

But my gums look good!

Lordy.

At least this one was only $64 out-of-pocket today. But that damn bite guard…

Of course not.

Last night didn’t go well.

Nights usually don’t, for whatever reason. (If anyone has any tips, please feel free to let me know.)

He was up at 1:30 (so, he slept five hours—which isn’t bad, but certainly isn’t good, since he has nights where he sleeps seven). He ate pretty well, burped, and seemed out. I laid in him the crib and—yep—he’s up and wriggly and fussy. I thought I would let him fuss for a bit to see if he would fall asleep on his own, so I went back to bed and watched the monitor every few minutes…yellow is okay, orange is worse, and red is bad (level of noise). It was still orange-to-red after five minutes, so back in I went and fed him the dregs of his bottle (sometimes enough to put him out).

But it wasn’t enough, and he was still kinda fussy. I made sure to get all the burps out, and just put him down again. And left him. It was hard, but I did it. After about 20 minutes of fussing, he was out.

So it took an hour and a half. Ugh.

And then he was up bright and early at 6am. And trying to feed him? Sometimes we get mornings that aren’t fun, and this is one of them. Spitting and sputtering and milk dribbling out all over. (And I know it’s not the new nipple, since he ate perfectly fine from it yesterday and before bed.) Unexpected burps and spit ups—I think he lost half the five ounces I put in him…and he won’t sit still and doesn’t want any more food and doesn’t want to nap.

I am downstairs now and he’s been shrieking upstairs for a few minutes…so I guess I’d better go check on him.

I have a feeling today is going to be a looooooong day.

Well, he knows how to get what he wants, LOL. As soon as I walked in the room and he saw me, he stopped shrieking and smiled and cooed at me. The little bugger. Then I fed him the last bit of his earlier bottle, and he fell asleep in my arms and didn’t even wake up when I transferred him to the swing. Stinker. So, apparently he just needed to see me and eat one more ounce?

Hoo boy.

New nipples!

For Owen, not for mom.

He seemed to really be having trouble sucking—and taking FOREVER—so we decided to up him to the next size nipple…so I went to Babies R Us today to stock up. And holy crap, he snarfs it down so quickly now it’s amazing.

Tonight I put him to bed—complete with extra burp time—in about 20 minutes (instead of the up-to-usual 60 minutes)! 88|

We are keeping our fingers crossed that:

  1. He stays asleep (sometimes when he goes down easy at first, he wakes up about 30-45 minutes later and wants another ounce or two).
  2. He eats and goes back down JUST as quickly in the middle of the night.

Eye care is too expensive.

Holy crap.

We have vision insurance through the military, but it’s not good insurance. Meaning, it covers the eye exam—ONLY. Meaning, because I choose to wear contacts, they don’t cover anything contact-related (i.e. the procedure for measuring the eyes, etc.). Meaning they also do not cover the heavily-recommended tests (for glaucoma and whatever the other one is). Meaning they don’t cover any part of glasses (lenses or frames) and of course nothing regarding contacts. >:XX

So, of the $129 for the total eye exam, they paid $84. Which, if that’s all I needed, that wouldn’t be too bad.

But alas, I wear contacts. And needed new glasses. So about $500 later (well, $584 if you count what insurance covered) I walked out of there. But that didn’t include the contacts that I would still need to purchase (I am testing out a new brand now so didn’t buy any yet.) That said, I did opt to finally get a backup pair of glasses—I am wearing them more often now, and with a baby…I imagine I will have a higher than normal chance of something happening to them.

So, it sucked to have to pay that amount, but at least I was getting two pair of glasses out of it.

But then I got to thinking…I didn’t know how much my prescription had changed. Contacts I definitely needed to upgrade…but glasses—especially for a backup pair (i.e. just using them at night for the baby)—I might not need the absolute best/updated and could sneak by and save the $129 (and instead put that already-paid money toward the contacts that I have yet to buy). So I called my old eye doc in Jacksonville to get my old eyeglass prescription.

Long story short, the prescription changed a little…but for a backup pair of glasses it should be just fine. So, YAY! :>>

Except.

In talking to the girl, I have only paid for the one pair of new glasses (lenses/frames) and the eye appointment itself. For $500. I have not yet paid for the second pair of lenses. (Or the contacts, of course.) Hoo boy.

So I am definitely thinking I do not need the backup pair of glasses—I will use my old ones as they are.

Blech. XX(

Of course, they said I am a perfect candidate for Lasik—at about $3500. 88|

So I can’t wait to see the actual line item bill—they will have it for me on Friday. It all made sense when she was reading it off to me last week, but now that I am adding things up, I am not getting the same total:

But I paid $498 last week. And they just told me I haven’t paid for the backup lenses yet…but I included that in my price. ❓

What a weekend!

What an amazing weekend this has been…

Why, you ask? What could have happened to make it so amazing?

Well, Tom had most of it off!! Yes, the guy who typically works six days a week, up to 12 hours a day, and who rarely gets weekends off…got Friday off, most of Saturday off (he worked until about 10am), Sunday off, and Monday off!!

When he first told me (Thursday night), I was just stunned into silence. What were we going to do? We hadn’t had that much time off together…since Owen was born! Of course all our to-do lists popped into mind, but mostly I just wanted to have family time—time for daddy and Owen to spend together!

After the first day (Friday) it already felt like we had had a week off! It was that amazing! I didn’t even mind him going into work on Saturday because I knew we still had lots of time left together! We also had lunch with cousin Lori at a new restaurant (for us) and had a very enjoyable time! When we got home, Michaels called and said our photo was done. I love love love how it turned out:

At this point I can’t even remember all that we did, but I know we all had fun! Of course we did get to some of the to-dos (the garage is now mostly organized) but those weren’t our main focus! Daddy and Owen played quite a bit, and daddy even took over most of the feedings so mommy could have a break! And mommy got to sleep in three mornings instead of just her normal one (Sunday)! (It would have been four mornings, but all of us were actually awake, so we all sat and played in bed!)

The weather was gorgeous, so we grilled each night and ate most of our dinners outside (when dad and Lin were here last week, we got the patio furniture cleaned and ready to go). Tom was able to mow the lawn. We went to the park and played on the swings (see this post on the Baby Blog).

In short, it was heaven…or, for most people, what a normal life must be like.

I wish it could be like this every weekend, but I will take what I can get!!

An amazing milestone

So Tom doesn’t really like theme parks. He will go since I love them, but overall, not so much. And he really doesn’t like fairs.

That said, I have been telling him all along that he WILL have to suck it up when the kid comes…because the kid WILL want to go and we WILL be going.

He said no way, no how.

Fast forward to today. When he was holding the boy and sucking all the baby goodness out of him…

And he admitted OF HIS OWN FREE WILL that yes, he will take him to the fair. Because he will do anything for the boy.

Keep your fingers crossed for Maggie!

So we hoped that when we moved back to Michigan, Maggie’s allergies would go away entirely. It’s what her vet assumed, too (mainly due to weather conditions). Unfortunately, she still has issues…although, honestly, they do seem somewhat lessened. But she still itches and scratches herself quite a bit—she usually has some red or scabbed spot on her at all time.

So we decided to change her food—again. She has been on many different good (i.e. nothing you can buy at Petsmart) foods as we tried to eliminate ingredients she might be allergic to…but since none of them made any difference, we just ended up feeding her a five-star rated food (we actually switched between Innova Evo and Canidae).

But we decided we might as well try another, better, food. Yes, there is such a thing—a six-star rated food! We decided on Orijen 6 Fresh Fish with Sea Vegetables, a grain-free food. And for those of you who don’t have dogs or who haven’t researched dog food: grain-free = expensive. Apparently these six-star dry foods are like one step below a raw diet.

Swoon!

I love my husband soooooooooooooooooooooo much. :yes:

As you may or may not know, I love lilacs—and for the past five years in NC we never saw any. But in Michigan? They are ALL over and they are now in bloom.

Of course, we don’t have any in our yard…so I keep seeing them all over the place and keep wishing I could go steal some from somewhere. I keep trying to remind myself to throw some scissors in the car so I could make a quick cut and run getaway…but I never get to it.

So what happened this morning?

Hubby came back from the gym…and brought me a huge vase of purple and white lilacs!!!!! So now I have the lovely scent of lilacs wafting through the house!

My $200 Lesson

So this morning Tom came back in the house to tell me I had left the car door open so the light was on—so I had better check the battery when I got up. I was still very drowsy (it was 5am after all) but I was pretty certain there was no way I had left the door open enough to leave the light on. But I didn’t think too much about it since I know I had gone back out to the car for something in the afternoon.

Fast forward to Tom coming back home about 6:30 to shower because he forgot his towel. He started the car to test it and it was fine.

Fast forward to me leaving to do some errands, and the first thing I noticed is that my iPod is missing—the tape adapter cord was lying on the passenger seat NOT ATTACHED TO ANYTHING.

So, the one night I forget to lock the car AND left iPod out… Yeah, Tom gets on me about keeping the car locked, and I am usually quite good about it—and the few times I’ve forgotten, he has remembered. But not last night. And I also just happened to start using the iPod again last week after about a six-month hiatus. :no:

The thing that confused me is that they didn’t take the GPS—which was right there between the seats. But after some thought, we figured that Tom must have scared them off when he opened the garage door at 5am—they must have been in the car right then, and then skedaddled when the door started opening, and just left the door ajar (with the light on).

Bastards.

Yes, I know technically it was my fault…but still.

Bastards.

I went to file a report (just so it would be on record, we know we will never see the iPod again and we’re not filing an insurance claim) and the cops all but laughed at me, saying they know they have troubles in our area…and we need to take valuables inside. 🙄 I didn’t have the serial number, which the cop said I really had to have if they ever happened to find it. So I brought the form home and had to get the S/N from within iTunes (one saving grace—I didn’t even know it kept that info). So, I will end up filing a report, just in case.

Ugh.

So that was my $200 lesson for the day.

Birth-day videos

So today I re-discovered the video camera Tom had with him when we were at the hospital. (I say re-discovered because it’s a tiny thing and we hardly ever use it because we use the video mode on the digital camera. It was in a drawer, and I happened to run across it and check out what was on it.)

Imagine my surprise when there were videos of me and Owen…not THE birth, but shortly after the birth.

They brought a tear to my eye.

And what stands out? Me saying “This is not real. I do not have a baby.”

The parental patience gene.

I apparently do not have it.

Last night was probably the worst night we’ve had in the last month. My decent little sleeper, who usually sleeps 5-6 hours after we put him down, then eats, then goes back down for 2 or so hours…was up numerous times.

Starting at 12:45 (he went down at 8:30). 88|

Then 3:30 (until 4:30).

Then 5:15.

Then 6:30.

So I basically napped all night, in between him crying and the storm and Tom snoring.

During times (nights) like these, I wonder—seriously—how on earth people want to do this more than once. I mean, sure, I’d love another child…but last night, when I was soooo exhausted and losing patience because he would not sleep…I can’t imagine having the strength to do this again. Hell, some days I am not sure I have the strength to get through this kid. (Yeah, I know I do, but sometimes, it sure doesn’t feel like it.)

I do not have the parental patience gene. He really is a good baby—he has his cranky times, but overall, he rarely cries for no reason. But when he does, I find myself getting frustrated. At him AND at myself for being much less patient than I always thought I’d be. And then I feel guilty for feeling that way.

Hoo boy.

I just never know…

I have always been emotional.

Yes, I am one that can cry at a Hallmark or coffee commercial.

And with my extreme love of animals, I have to fast forward through any shelter or animal-abuse type commercial (those might actually start me bawling).

And most things military-related are bad.

And of course now I have a hard time watching anything with babies (there is a vaccination commercial that gets me every time).

And if you’re crying about something in my presence, I’m likely to start crying, too.

Of course, I just never know when I will read or see or hear something that will set off the waterworks…but it’s generally not hard.

Surprise #2!

I hate this mini pill I’m taking.

I am taking it vs. a regular birth control pill because it was supposed to not hinder milk production as much. BUT, apparently, it’s not nearly as effective and…as evidenced by today…no help at all in regulating your period.

So, somewhat on topic, this just reinforces my decision to phase out pumping. I have been taking my “milk pills” and pumping throughout the day…but I am just not getting that much anymore. Yes, it’s still some—and some is better than none—but it really just doesn’t seem to be that worthwhile quantity wise.

Believe me, I have thought about this and part of me hates to give it up. But part of me also dislikes pumping, taking 10 extra pills a day, and not being able to take the regular pill.

But the way I see it is that I managed for four months (most likely, by the time I wean myself from pumping). Not great, but certainly not bad. And, like the move to formula (where I felt guilty at first and now I am fine with it), I am sure it will be the same with this.

No more swaddling…?!

So, we’ve been swaddling Owen for bed at night. The practice was highly recommended, and we got used to it and enjoyed mixed results—he seemed to sleep well enough but was very Houdini-esqe and managed to escape frequently. Of course, the grandparents assumed this to mean he didn’t like being swaddled and was struggling to escape…and didn’t want us to swaddle him. And we just trusted the professionals and assumed he was a very wiggly baby and continued to swaddle him. (We did try NOT swaddling him a time or two and it didn’t seem to make any difference.)

So fast forward to Gramma Jean taking a night shift and not being too successful applying the swaddle…so I said we could NOT swaddle him if SHE chose because she would have to deal with the repercussions if he didn’t sleep well…and we could always go back to swaddling. So we didn’t swaddle…and we both got a big laugh out of his sleeping position (viewed from the monitor):

This was on Thursday, May 7.

Since then, we have continued…and for the most part I think it’s okay. But we we think it’s harder for him to go down—even if he seems TOTALLY out, as soon as we put him down, his arms shoot up and he flails around. I think when he was wrapped, he couldn’t tell as much that we were letting him go and setting him down. Secondarily, his little unwrapped hands get SO cold at night (the rest of him is warm and the room temp is at the recommended 68°-72° so don’t worry).

So we are still deciding what we’re doing, LOL.

A better night for both of us…

So after my day starting at 2:30am, I was in bed at 8 while Tom was putting Owen to bed. Turns out he went down about 8:15, had a brief fit about 8:30-9 (due to a burp that didn’t come out previously), and then slept until about 3:30!! Then he went back down about 4:15 and slept until 6:15—at which point he was just chattering away in his crib so I got up to pump so I could give him a bottle, but he was out again before I was done! He slept another half hour after that. I feel amazingly awake today, but still with an undercurrent of exhaustion. 🙂

So, whether the good night was due to him not really napping or the fact that he got some fresh air (we went for a walk around the park)…I’ll take it!
