Okay, it’s time.

So, Owen loved opening presents, but usually didn’t seem too thrilled with the actual item. But I knew he’d get to them eventually…so it’s fun to see what he’ll bring out of the toy room next.

Just now, he came out with three new packages of Cars cars that he opened from papa and Grannie Lin last night. 🙂

Owen gets new cars

And Katie got some new bibs but she doesn’t make for a good video!

Thank you, Wendy and Toby!

Of course as soon as I stopped recording…

Wow. These are cool. This is the coolest helicopter ever.

Owen: Mom, the white car and blue car are sad.
Me: Why are they sad?
Owen: The red car won the race.

This helicopter is HEAVY. The cars are light.

Police car in action!

We got Owen’s police car out today with the hopes that he’d like driving it since it’s been awhile. And he did! I had Katie in the stroller walking up and down the street in front of our house while Owen drove along with us.

It was actually a little slow, so we had a “pit stop” so Tom could remove the speed regulator—now Owen can zip along at a 4mph clip! He was SO excited to be able to go fast!

Now we just have to get him to understand he has to stay close to us and LISTEN to us when we yell at him to stop!

Welcome to the real North!

I love this sight:

We were surprised at the amount of tree color in the U.P. considering it was only September 16.

After what seemed like a short 7½ hours (after two long nine-hour days, 7½ felt short), we made it up to the Upper Peninsula to see my dad’s new house…MAN, that’s a drive. (Here is our total one-way trip from North Carolina.)

See that tiny point? That’s where we were—Eagle Harbor. We joke it’s Alaska.

The view from the back deck—I have to admit it’s nice:

And Owen having a blast playing with cars out there:

And Papa meeting and feeding Katie for the first time…

Are we really potty training? REALLY?!

So I was off getting my hair done and Virginia (our good friends’ kid who is now babysitting age! She was three when we met her!) was watching Katie, so Tom decided it was time to see if Owen would use the potty (especially after the success of peeing in the grass last night). I didn’t know this, of course, until I was out of the house, so it was a big surprise to me!

So I got a text and a photo of Owen standing in front of the toilet! The next text was “Success!” and a picture of Owen holding his reward—a new Cars car! The next text was a photo of the near miss (pee on the rug in front of the toilet). Then later a text saying Owen had earned a lot of cars! 88|

I tried not to get too hopeful, thinking it really couldn’t be this easy (though we had hoped that if we just waited long enough, it WOULD be this easy) but I admit to being excited.

When I came home, we celebrated by ordering pizza for dinner. And Owen kept peeing in the potty all night and earned more toys (it’s a good thing I have a backlog of toys ready for this occasion)! Here he is outside, waiting for the “pizza man.”

Of course, poop is going to be the bigger obstacle…but I have BIG (more wanted) toys ready for that—an Iron Man robot, a big school bus, and a bunch of Cars 2 cars—that he’s really excited about. Funny thing—the big toys are too big to set on top of the medicine cabinet, so I was just going to put them in his closet, right? Except he knew they were there and kept opening his closet to look at them. I figured that might not be conducive to him actually sleeping, so I put them in our room, but put one of them (Iron Man) in the bathroom on the top shelf above the toilet—but that didn’t last long as he climbed up on the toilet and reached up to touch it. I could only see that ending badly, so that one got moved as well. Hopefully they are enough incentive to get him to poop on the potty!

The only somewhat big (though minor) mishap was when I was putting Owen to bed. He was in bed, we read a story, and as I was getting up to tuck him in…I saw a poop nugget in the bed, smeared (I had obviously just been sitting on it). So…sometime during the day, he had pooped, and it apparently fell out of his underwear…and he never told us. Yes, poop is going to be the hardest part.

So, it looks like we’re potty training. And sticking close to the toilet all weekend. And watching him like a hawk!

GO OWEN!!

Kids!

Our good friends Tom and Karen (that live on the other side of our neighborhood) have moved back into town, and they have three kids (ages 6, almost 5, and 8mo) so we’ve been seeing them more lately—which is great for Owen! We had dinner over there this past weekend, and Owen and Nate (the 6yo) got along fabulously…Owen showed up with his knight helmet and sword and Nate was already running around with his own sword! Owen also sat and talked to the 8mo which was adorable! They’ve also been to our house to swim a few times, but that’s a little overwhelming for Owen who is used to having his pool to himself (but we keep doing it so he’ll get used to it)!

Today, I left Owen there while I had a doctor’s appointment, and Karen texted me this pic of our “Little Toms”:

And then this pic of Owen driving one of their power wheels cars…which, if you recall, he won’t even barely sit (let alone drive) his own police car! So needless to say I was surprised…and of course, apparently other kids’ toys are more fun than your own!

Tractor tipping + Oh come on!

http://youtu.be/FyHT9t32r-4

I got a really good deal on these cars that work on an iPad app, so Owen got them for Easter. And he is obsessed with playing with them! It took him a few days, but now he knows how to play the games, tip the tractors, “buy” stuff from the store, and move the pushpin on the map to get directions.

He LOVES tipping the tractors the most, which you can see in this video… And then something doesn’t go his way and you can hear “Oh, come on!” 🙂 I guess I must say that a lot since he’s obviously picked up on it!

Hearing and vision screening

Today was our first appointment at the school to get Owen’s hearing and vision screened. We were there early, so they had us wait in a nice room where Owen immediately found the cars…and tipped them. 🙂

*On a sidenote, the couch and loveseat was the same exact furniture my mom used to have, just in a slightly different color.

Before the testing even started, they were impressed with him putting the toys away like I asked. 🙂

First up was hearing. Of course he had no problems pointing to the correct pictures on a chart (fire truck, ice cream, basketball, etc.). With the headphone testing, he was supposed to drop the plastic bird in the bucket when he heard the tweet, but he didn’t quite understand…but his eyes would light up and he’d smile so the audiologist knew he was hearing it. 🙂

Then it was over to the nurse where she did a few basic vision tests: naming colors of blocks as she set them out, pointing to a tiny dot on a piece of paper, and following a tiny puff ball as it dropped from her fingers. He did great with everything, and the nurse concluded that his eyesight is 20/30 and 20/40 which she said was average for his age (but the tests didn’t seem very scientific to me though).

I guess this WAS just a screening, and if they noticed anything REALLY off they’d schedule actual testing (which the same goes for Friday’s clinic). But everyone seemed happy with the results…so I guess that’s good.

Our postponed Easter!

Tom hid the eggs outside so they were ready once Owen got up. Here he is, super excited and ready to go!

And off hunting for eggs!

The spoils—chocolate, candy, coins, and Cars cars… (This part doesn’t seem to be quite as exciting to him as finding the eggs—he still needs practice.)

Gramma Jean got Owen his own little baby doll to play with! He doesn’t like it as much as he loves his cars (of course), but he will pick it up and play with it and feed it. 🙂

The Easter Bunny got Owen a few more Cars-themed things, too… Presenting Miles Axelrod (his newest favorite)…

And Crabby (who he also loves, but is only in the movie for a few minutes)…

It was bound to happen…

Well, it was bound to happen…Owen left some cars in a store and I didn’t realize it until we were home. Of course, they were the more expensive Cars cars. Ugh. So do I waste a trip back after his nap and HOPE I can find them somewhere in Big Lots…or do I just forget about it and hopes he learns a lesson?

I explained they’re gone because he left them in a store and I wasn’t sure if he’d get them back…and I don’t quite think he got it. He just kept repeating either “Grem and Acer at the store” or “Grem and Acer gone.”

It just kills me because he loves them so much (and I actually have a duplicate of one I could give him from the Easter Bunny (we haven’t celebrated Easter yet)) but I want him to learn a lesson. But I’m not sure he’s quite old enough to learn that lesson. And I’m pissed because I normally keep a very close eye on the toys he carries with him, but I didn’t even notice him taking those into the store.

3:45pm

We have a lucky little boy… He happened to take a short nap today so we were on the road back to Big Lots by 3:30. We retraced our steps and as soon as we got to the first toy aisle, he went RIGHT to them, pushing aside some other boxes to retrieve both cars. THE STINKER! Of course he was happy to have them back (as was I) but of course he didn’t fully grasp how lucky he was. And then proceeded to cry and whine because I wouldn’t buy him a new car.

KIDS!

Playing with cars!

I stopped at the Developmental Pediatrician’s office to see if they had some of my original paperwork—which, long story short they didn’t, but they said they’d send me a copy of the report (which I hadn’t gotten yet). Well, in the building is a big play room (that I’m sure they use for therapy) and the door is open so Owen can see all the toys…so we went in to play for about a half hour. Of course, he went straight for the cars. 🙂
