Happy Easter!

Once again, Owen loved looking for eggs! It was a bit rainy, but that didn’t dampen his excitement at all!

Now, how did the Easter Bunny know that Owen wanted Lego minifigures? Amazingly, he got three new ones! (Unfortunately, it took the Easter Bunny eight new packs to get those three. 🙁 )

As Owen picked up each egg from his basket, he’d say “There’s something in there!” Like he couldn’t believe EACH egg had something in it, even though he’s never had empty eggs before. It was funny.

Oh! And before he even went outside to get the eggs, he noticed his easter basket that the Easter Bunny had hidden in the new playroom cubby. I thought he’d have to hunt and search and look high and low…and he saw it almost as an aside. Kids!

After a brief meltdown when Owen couldn’t remember where he put the bunny ears (after I’d left them on the table for the express purpose of using them after both kids were dressed), I got these:

Easter Egg Hunt

Today was Owen’s first honest easter egg hunt with a bunch of kids! One of the moms in my mommy group had organized a get-together with some of her neighbors and the mommy group moms. I am SOOO glad we decided to go… It was the first time Tom had seen Owen with more than a handful of kids—and it was amazing.

This was his slam dunk:

Tom trying to show Owen how to hit the ball:

He did, but then that was it and he was off to the next thing:

The start of the egg race, which was taking place to keep the kids out of the back yard while the older kids were hiding the eggs:

Getting ready to go hunt for eggs!

2013-03-30kids428

Rushing in! Half the kids came in each side of the yard. Owen was just thrilled—and it was hilarious because he could see other eggs while he was picking up the ones in front of him, but had a hard time actually getting the ones in front of him because he was so enamored with seeing all the other eggs that he wasn’t close to yet!

He even braved the bouncy house (which he DOES NOT like to play in) because there were a handful of eggs inside!

His successful haul!

The entire gaggle of kids! I think the youngest was 2 and the oldest was 6.

A family shot, taken by a friend. (Then I took their family shot—she’s like me and rarely is in the photos!)

Owen torturing the girls on the trampoline with a fake snake! They were all screaming and he was just laughing and having a great time.

2013-03-30kids445

Swinging the snake around. All I could think of was my mom telling me how her brother did that to her WITH REAL SNAKES when they were kids…

2013-03-30kids447

Then he got all sneaky and shoved the snake through the opening in the side of the net. He was so proud of himself! What a stinker!

2013-03-30kids449

Then, right as we were getting ready to leave, they were handing out popsicles. Owen didn’t want one, but then asked a little girl if he could have a bite of hers. The mom was standing there (and knows about Owen’s food issues) so told her daughter it was okay. So Owen took a bite! He didn’t love it, but at least he tried it!

Tractor tipping + Oh come on!

http://youtu.be/FyHT9t32r-4

I got a really good deal on these cars that work on an iPad app, so Owen got them for Easter. And he is obsessed with playing with them! It took him a few days, but now he knows how to play the games, tip the tractors, “buy” stuff from the store, and move the pushpin on the map to get directions.

He LOVES tipping the tractors the most, which you can see in this video… And then something doesn’t go his way and you can hear “Oh, come on!” 🙂 I guess I must say that a lot since he’s obviously picked up on it!

Our postponed Easter!

Tom hid the eggs outside so they were ready once Owen got up. Here he is, super excited and ready to go!

And off hunting for eggs!

The spoils—chocolate, candy, coins, and Cars cars… (This part doesn’t seem to be quite as exciting to him as finding the eggs—he still needs practice.)

Gramma Jean got Owen his own little baby doll to play with! He doesn’t like it as much as he loves his cars (of course), but he will pick it up and play with it and feed it. 🙂

The Easter Bunny got Owen a few more Cars-themed things, too… Presenting Miles Axelrod (his newest favorite)…

And Crabby (who he also loves, but is only in the movie for a few minutes)…

Making cupcakes!

Owen had found our formula mixer (which is out since Tom uses it to mix his coffee) and then grabbed one of Tom’s coffee pods from the drawer and was putting the two together saying “Making cupcakes!” I’m not exactly sure where he got the idea of cupcakes, though somewhat recently I know he was watching something on Food Network with Tom about snacks… So I got the idea to actually make cupcakes.

I got it all set up and the hardest part was getting Owen to kneel on the chair at the counter—he wanted to sit (too low) or stand (too high and wobbly on our bar-height chairs) but we eventually got it worked out. First he helped me dump the measuring cup of water, oil, and eggs into the bowl (though I had to keep a hand on it so it didn’t all end up on the floor). The whole time (from now until the end) he just kept saying “Making cupcakes. Making cupcakes! Making cupcakes!”

Then he used the mixer, which he actually did pretty well with:

Then it was off to fill the cups. He helped me put all the liners in the pan, and then after I did the first tray of 12, he got to do this tray:

Still working on it:

The mess wasn’t too bad (none got on him, the chair, or the floor) so that was a bonus! And he had a blast!

Attempted Easter kid photo shoot!

We wanted to get all four little ones together for a photo…my mom and I were both snapping away at the same time. I put all mine (I think it was 129 or so!) into a slideshow because it’s funny to watch the whole thing in one shot. I think there are maybe two decent ones overall where everyone is looking at the camera!

Falling asleep in the car

We were headed to Bay City for our Easter lunch, with the plan that Owen would nap on the way there. He was falling asleep on the couch before we left, but was wide awake once we got him in the car. After about 45 minutes, this is what happened… I alternate between thinking “poor kid” and “oh my gosh that’s too cute.”

Early Easter Fun

Since we will be out of town with family on Easter Sunday, we decided to have our (very first!) egg hunt this weekend when Grandma Marsha and Uncle Rob were here. Of course it was really cold, so the outside hunt turned into the living room hunt. These videos are waaaay long, but it’s mostly for all of the grandparents. 🙂

Easter Egg Hunt in the Living Room (9m04s)

He ended up liking the plastic eggs more than the hunt OR the goodies in the eggs.

Giving Owen His First Bike (6m42s)

He loved looking at and playing with the bike the best…but wasn’t too terribly sure about actually getting on and using it.

It doesn’t feel like Easter.

I hate it not feeling like Easter.

Easter used to be this great day when my whole family (mom’s side) would get together at my grandpa’s house (an 1.5 hour drive for us, we’d go for the whole weekend), you’d get dressed up, the house would smell for hours of delicious things like sausage (oh, the sausage…the stuff of dreams!), cheesy potatoes, ham…and the side dishes like deviled eggs and our family’s homemade dill pickles. After dinner the guys would do the dishes (no dishwasher at the old house) and then we’d spend the rest of the afternoon playing cards and chatting. And there would always be the delicious leftovers to take home (well, minus the deviled eggs!).

Now we have moved away. And my grandfather has died. And my mom just told me they aren’t even getting together this year because too many people couldn’t make it.

I know people are busier than ever in today’s world, but I honestly wonder why so many of them couldn’t make it to an afternoon meal?

Oh well.

I just really miss family get-togethers, and it makes me sad to miss them—and to know that even though everyone (except us) still lives close enough to each other to make it work and it still doesn’t work? :'(

So our Easter is going to be spent outside on yard work: We have to pull up a dead tree in the front yard and replace it (already purchased). Tom wants to fertilize the lawn. Bushes need to be trimmed. Weeds need to be pulled. Hopefully it will be another perfect-weather day like yesterday (mid 70s, breezy, and sunny) so being outside will be wonderful.

But it still won’t feel like Easter.

Easter A/C

Happy Easter! Happy A/C!

We finally turned the A/C on for the first time this year… we were cooking and having people over for Easter dinner and didn’t want it to be too ungodly hot in the house. We should have turned it on yesterday, as it was about 87 degrees, but it was pretty breezy and by the time we wanted it on, it was like 7:00 and already cooling down. Tonight, however, it’s nice and cool, so we’ve already turned it off! I’m always scared to turn it on for the first time because it seems like it never goes off after that….and I hate the bills!

Easter dinner was delicious and we had a good time. It wasn’t the Len Easter, but we did share the meal with two of our best friends, Roger and Ursula. Oh, and of course Virginia and Caroline. Remember Caroline? The 1.2# preemie? Here she is now:

Blah Easter

I must say Easter wasn’t too terribly exciting this year. No meals with friends. No family. No Tom. Just me and the cats and a book—and not even a good book, either. (It was one of those I’ve had forever and finally decided to read and I only finished reading it because I wanted to know how it ended, not because I was really interested in it.)
